I've always known that I can sing.

But to get that level of validation and praise, it was --

It was an insane feeling.

When I was younger and when I watched "American Idol,"

"Love in the Dark" was one of those songs that I was like,

"I want to sing that on the show one day."

I do feel a little bit of pressure.

The audition was just in front of the three judges,

and now it's in front of 1,000 people,

so the stakes are definitely higher.

While Jesse waits for his result,

the spotlight now belongs to his fellow hopefuls,

including 29-year-old singer-songwriter

Kyndal Inskeep.

Kyndal: Usually when I take the stage,

it takes a couple songs for me to get comfortable.

So it's such a challenge this week

'cause you only have one shot

to really be authentic to who you are.

I grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana.

My mom sang worship in the church

and we would sing together.

So that's kind of, like, where my love for music

came from, is my mom.

I moved almost eight years ago to Nashville.

I actually came to Belmont. Came here for maybe 60 days.

But we are still alumni. We were here for only 60 days.

This week, I'm singing "Human" by the Killers.

Man on P.A.: All right. Stand by.

Kyndal: The song is a little bit more lively.

I'm not gonna have a guitar in my hand,

so it's not really in my comfort zone.

Um, how are you feeling?

A little nervy, but... You're nervous?

...I get that a little bit.

But this is a really great opportunity

for me to really show

I can also be free-spirited and fun and joyful

in my performance.

So I'm ready to step out on that stage.

I've done a lot of growing, a lot of learning.

And so this year, I'm definitely feeling

much more well prepared and confident.

I've only performed my own songs.

Sheldon: The new thing I've discovered about "Idol"

is that it's really stripping me right back to basics.

I've done a lot of TV shows,

and I've always completely covered up in a mask,

and it's avant-garde. There's crystals and diamonds,

sequins, big gowns, big dresses.

This is the most stripped-back,

vulnerable version of myself ever.

For this round, I'll be singing

The vocal on this performance is a lot bigger

than my normal ones.

I challenged myself with a big track.

Brooks: I've never performed on a stage.

I've never performed in front of anyone

besides friends and family,

so I'm very excited,

but I'm also still very nervous.

I come from a musical family.

My dad is a harmonicist.

My mother sang her whole life,

but I just never took it seriously.

♪ I've been out ♪

Growing up was difficult for me.

I had trouble making friends.

I was very shy, awkward.

♪ ...that much talking ♪

I started playing soccer around age 6.

That kind of led to making friends.

And from that point on, soccer was my life.

My dream for soccer was always to go pro,

to see my last name on my back with a number that I liked.

My freshman year of high school,

halfway through the soccer season,

I went for a free kick.

And I planted my left foot to kick it,

and I felt like a gear switch in my lower left back

and I couldn't feel my legs.

I snapped my back in half.

And that changed everything.

It was hard for him to not be able to engage

in what he loved

and be around the other boys

and be a part of things.

I was lost for a long time, and then I picked up a guitar

and I didn't want to put it down.

You haven't played out much. Why is that?

I'm working too much.

Well, stop doing that.

I just want to hear more.

I've never been willing to take chances and opportunities,

but this holds the future that I want.
