[Heather] I did not make that much sausage because this is not

usually a sausage party. -[Bailey] That's why I got two of them.

[Ryan] One is never enough.

Rick's crew are fueling up for another big day stripping

overburden in the Vegas Valley Extension.

-I thought you were off -- -Yeah, you said you were off the syrup.

-[Ryan] No, look, I'm doing a little. -[Bailey] Oh, yeah.

[Bailey] Yeah, that's a little, man, yeah.

[Heather] Don't judge how he eats breakfast.

-[Heather] Good morning. -Ooh, eating light.

[Ryan] I think we're covering all of our bases, but we got a lot of

dirt to remove. -Ready for a hard day, [indistinct]?

You guys get out there and start slinging some dirt.

We got a lot of overburden to move, so...

[Ryan sighs] On it.

I will be out there all day, so a little trick

I've been doing for years --

meat in a bag, bag it up, put it in your pocket.

Call it pocket meat. Best lunch there is.

[Rick] There's no gold coming in right now for us this part of

the season, and really we're just hauling a ton of

overburden right now, and that's costing a lot of money.

So money's flying out the door, and there's no gold coming in.

My job today is get ahead of things.

I'm gonna build a road.

The crew and I are gonna go stake a claim.

Today's gonna be a big one.

[ominous chord strike]

[Bailey] This season has been a rough one.

We haven't really got much gold.

We're gonna be hauling overburden for quite a while.

Been spending a lot of money.

The dump site's a little far, but still making good progress.

Rick is gambling everything he has on a big payday.

After spending $700,000 buying Lightning Creek, Rick's been

granted a four-month extension

on their Duncan Creek water license.

So Rick has pivoted back to the gold-rich ground.

To get down to paydirt, they have to strip overburden

around the clock at a cost of $10,000 a day.

It's a key part of mining, having decent roads.

The worse the roads are, the worse beating the truck's

gonna take and our body takes the same one.

[Chris] Road conditions, just rough roads.

A rock truck's not that terrible if the roads are

smooth, but some of these bigger bumps, you kick the [bleep]

out of your body after a day of driving on this stuff.

[bang]

Ah [bleep]. Did I lose my tailgate?

How the [bleep] did my tailgate start to fall off?

[groans]

Rick's gonna be so mad at me.

Without a tailgate, the rock trucks can only carry

two-thirds of their 40-ton load, costing them valuable

stripping time.

Now, most of Rick's team has to drop what they're doing to help

with a quick fix.

When these trucks are empty, those tailgates are banging up

and down, and we're just blowing the bearings out.

You do the best you can on your maintenance.

You change everything you can,

but sometimes there's hidden things that you can't see.

I'm just hoping the rest of the season that these trucks

we have remaining are gonna be able to make it.

Should be good to go.

It's a big, big problem.

We're gonna have to come up with Plan B.

[ominous chord strike]

We've been having a lot of rock truck breakdowns, but we gotta

get past that, and I think I've got a way

to make things go a little faster.

To make his operation more efficient, Rick wants to

resurface the road to keep his rock trucks rolling

and his crew in the game to hit

their 1,800-ounce season goal.

This is the kind of thing I look out for.

We're moving a bunch of overburden.

It's looking like really good gravel,

and I was thinking of a purpose for it.

You know, there's no gold in it.

We got to move it. How do we make it pay?

And so instead of dumping that gravel in the overburden pile,

I think I'm gonna have these guys start,

you know, dumping it for fixing this road.

Hey, guys, quit dumping that over in gravel in

the waste pile, I'm gonna show you a different spot

we can put it. -[Bailey speaking]

[Rick] We're moving dirt intelligently, which is kind of

the name of the game.

I was taught early on that moving dirt once is expensive,

and moving it twice is unforgivable.

We got Rick working on the road, so that should speed

things right up, and should be able to get

down to pay a lot sooner.

Definitely taking the time to do it right so that it lasts.

You know, it actually helps us speed it up too, because right

now we would be dumping this overburden in our waste pile.

It's actually farther than if

we were fixing this road with it.

There's always a point in the season where I'm nervous

about everything.

And that's because we've spent a lot of money and we still

have a lot of gold to get to recoup that money.

If anything happens between now and the end of the season

and it doesn't work out, then I lost all my money

and likely lost my business.

So that's definitely something to be nervous about.

There's a lot of pressure trying to reach 1,800.

It's a lot of work and a lot of pressure on him.

We don't really fully know if this area is going to be really

good gold or not.

For us to be one step ahead at all times, making sure we have

a good, solid plan of every step that we're doing here

and just have everything ready to go once we hit pay.

[Rick] I do enjoy a lot of other things other than mining.

You know, I spent a lot of my life playing music.

I mean, I made my living playing music.

And I got to be honest with you, I haven't really picked up

my instrument in probably 14 years.

When I think about it, that's sad.

You know, that was a big part of my life.

It's a sacrifice.

Rick toured the world as a musician, but gave up

his rock-and-roll lifestyle after a chance encounter with

a young gold miner.

[Parker speaking]

the remote Yukon wilderness.

And that's the hopes is that, you know, when I get this done,

I can spend a little more time with my friends and my family

that I'm missing out on right now.

Well, now I'm heading down to Monster Red.

We're rebuilding the prewash, working on the top deck,

basically just making sure that our wash plant's ready to go

when we need it.

Rick's crew are battling to get down to gold in

Vegas Valley.

And once they hit pay, will need his 300-yard-per-hour

wash plant, Monster Red, firing on all cylinders.

I'm just gonna lift the prewash off the plant here,

because it's got some damage.

If we don't do it now, something will end up happening

while we're trying to run at the end of the season,

and we don't have time for that [bleep], so.

Rick has spent $18,000 on parts to re-line the prewash

and replace Monster Red's screen deck.

[Ryan] Right now, I am going to replace all these screen decks

on this shaker.

They have taken serious abuse, and I'm not one that likes to

just sit around.

So this is a perfect opportunity for me to get over

here and start knocking out all these screen decks

and try to stay ahead of the game.

Monster Red is fed paydirt into its prewash, where it

then filters through two screen decks before the gold-rich

slurry travels into the sluice box

where the precious metal is caught.

Over time, large rocks have smashed through the top deck.

Ryan is replacing all of Monster Red's damaged screen panels

in preparation for Vegas Valley gold.

[Ryan] And this whole deck will actually be brand new for once.

With the top deck replaced, Ryan gets to work swapping out

the rubber impact panels in the prewash.

[Ryan] I want to remove a couple sections here, see how

damaged up the floor of our prewash is

before we put our new pads back in.

What in the [bleep] is in there?

Oh, look right here. Check this out.

All the gold is layered.

And you can see the black sand in here.

That's gonna be your heavies.

And I bet you this whole place right here is just jam-packed

full of this gold. It's pretty wild.

This is just years of buildup and abuse.

Gold is always gonna find the lowest point.

And this was the lowest point underneath these mats.

It actually looks pretty good, man.

There's quite a bit of gold I can see in this.

That rubber's never been out of that prewash, so it's

as old as the plant. It's probably 10 years old.

I honestly think it would be cool to pan some and kind of

see what you think.

[Rick] Whenever there's dirt trapped in a plant,

you never just dump it out.

I mean, if you think about it, that's a low point right there,

and it's been collected for 10 years.

Yeah, well, I'm gonna put some water in and see what

I can get out of it right now.

This thing was looking to fall apart at any minute, and now,

it's good to go to war.

I've learned that the right crew means everything,

and it's taken me eight years to put the right crew together.

[Ryan] Try to go over some more.

Am I gonna clear if I just turn?

[Ryan] Keep turning.

I like the distance now.

When you go to fix one thing, there's always gonna be

other things you find while you're up there.

Ryan will not rest until every single thing is fixed,

so there's less of a chance of things failing in the future

when he's proactive like that.

It keeps downtime to a minimum, which keeps the gold

at a maximum. -A little bit more.

[Rick] Oh, there it is.

We're really hoping that all the gold we found in

this prewash gonna pay for this top deck.

So it actually might turn out to be a pretty sweet day.

Rick heads to the gold room

with the surprise stash of concentrate from the prewash.

He's hoping the two five-gallon buckets hold enough gold to pay

for Monster Red's $18,000 repair.

Two buckets worth of concentrate to run, so...

Buckets are really heavy, too. Lots of gold, I can tell.

Gotta get water -- get water going here.

I just hit it with water.

It'll wash all the dirt through the screen and just leave

the rocks on top.

To be a successful mine-boss out here, you got to be able to,

you got to know how to do all the jobs for sure.

And the only way you can do that really is just by doing it.

It's really better off starting at the bottom, not knowing

anything and learning your way through the ranks.

Pretty much what I did over at Parker's, so.

What'd you do?

[Rick] A new appreciation for you standing out here doing this.

I hate guessing just as much as you do on cleanups, but I think

there's gonna be a lot of gold in it, so kind of hoping that

it pays for the top deck screens on the wash plant,

so maybe like 20 grand.

Just trying to come up with an easy, handheld meal so

the guys can keep working through supper.

easy-to-eat-while-driving little chicken wraps.

The crew's 14-hour shift is over, but they still have

one last job to do.

We just put a brand new top deck and a screen deck.

Thought after we do that, we might as well test it.

With no paydirt to run, Rick has a one-of-a-kind way to

test his rebuilt wash plant.

And we're actually gonna have a race to see whose rock

gets from the feeder all the way through the plant

and out the other end first.

A round rock is gonna go through the screen deck

real fast, but it's not gonna get up the conveyor belt.

It's gonna sit there and spin.

So a flat rock is better for the belt, but slower

on the screen. You get the idea.

You got to kind of come up with something in between.

-Rocks. -[Rick] We're gonna have a race.

-Now, Bailey, if you want to load them in. -Yep.

Ryan, you see whose comes out the hopper first.

After a day of building roads

and repairing Monster Red, Rick turns his attention to

expanding his gold mining empire.

[Rick] I've been watching this claim basically all season.

It's actually a little wedge

that's between some ground that I have.

Well, this spot that we're going for, that's what

that looks like. I know about this area

because of an OG, real old-timer.

Mel Zeiler was a cool guy.

It's a pretty important piece of ground to me.

It has gold on it, and we're gonna go get it.

I know this little creek here, it's just shocking how much

gold lay in there.

Over 40 years with limited equipment, Mel Zeiler mined

thousands of ounces of gold from Duncan Creek.

Before he passed away, Mel told Rick about a secret,

gold-rich hotspot.

[cawing]

[Mel] You just want to have it.

-It pays to pay attention to it. -[Rick] That's a good point.

What I know about the lower part, there was something

going on with that.

[Rick] This little spot just got me excited.

I did go up there one time when there were some guys

mining on the lower part,

and they set up a little hand machine.

They're impressed by the little amount of gold they get with

a hand shovel.

I don't think that's understood, the creek.

They don't realize how much gold was in there.

They couldn't get it out.

I don't think they had big enough equipment to really do

justice on it, you know.

[Rick] I should try and see if I can find where the gold is.

[Mel] That's right, yeah.

I'm just trying to give you helpful hints.

Since his last encounter with Mel Zeiler, Rick has waited

six years for his chance to secure the claim.

Rick mined the ground beside it, and he's convinced it holds

millions of dollars worth of gold.

[Rick] This stuff is definitely something to keep an eye on.

I knew that this was gonna expire,

and that's why I've been watching it.

When it is becoming available, it changes status, and I notice

that status change.

When it happens, it's like, it's a score.

And now that ground is no longer mineral rights owned,

it's basically open to anybody.

We've got a substantial amount of ground here.

A couple of jackasses have said,

"Oh, you're trying to be the King of Keno."

I'm not doing it to rule the people or impress anybody.

I am trying to get every piece of ground that I can.

I am trying to build this as big as I can.

We're doing this the way that

the old-timers did in the beginning.

We're gonna go pound stakes and then claim this ground.

Worst-case scenario, some other crazy [bleep] are out there

trying to beat us to it. It's happened.

It happens all the time.

I mean, it especially happened back in the day.

In the 1800s, gold prospecting exploded across North America.

To minimize violent frontier disputes,

the Canadian government devised a system for claiming ground

by placing wooden boundary markers to register ownership.

This process of staking claims was used during

the Yukon Gold Rush of 1896.

And Rick learned how it worked over a century later

with Parker.

-[thump] -Oh, beautiful.

If anyone else is looking for it, we've got to beat them.

This place at the height of summer, it doesn't get dark,

24-7 daylight.

We won't be pounding around in the dark in the woods like

a bunch of idiots. I kind of know the area.

There's a lot of wildlife. There's bears and wolves,

tons of that [bleep] up there.

I think we'll be safe, but you never know.

I guess we just better be ready to fight.

Time's wasting.

It's time to grab the boys and go stake this claim.

Who knows?

Might be a royal rumble in the Klondike tonight.

It's midnight, and a gold-rich claim

has just become available.

Rick takes his crew to the edge of his operation to access

the unclaimed ground.

We actually did really pretty well in the center here

five years ago.

Right over there is where we found the biggest nugget

to date, an ounce and a half,

and then stopped here because that was the end.

The guy that I know, his name was Mel Zeiler.

He was a crazy bastard, man.

Spent a lot of time with him in his cabin

talking about this ground.

I guess, how do we figure out where to put the stakes

and where to put the posts and what to do?

The first corner is easy.

I mean, I know the end of our property is right there.

So we'll grab a post and hammer that one,

and we'll know about the rest of them.

The rest of them we're gonna have to figure out.

I pull up the maps, and I know the latitude and longitude of

where that is, so we'll just use the GPS to find that.

And then as far as the ground, we just have to go to

the four corners. -OK.

We got to make sure the posts face each other,

they're numbered, and that's about it.

This new claim is at the north end

of his lower Duncan Creek claim.

To secure the 60 acres, Rick's crew need to place

four stakes using GPS to mark and record the corners of

the claim's boundary.

Load up.

Let's just go this way.

Yeah, we're really close. The first one's gonna be easy.

[Kyle] Bushwhacking.

I think it's right over here, guys.

-Yeah, this is it right here. -[Ryan] Is that it?

Post one, it's got to be facing north, and I'll put

the latitude and longitude on it.

We'll just wire it to this tree facing the right direction.

-That's pretty much it. -Well, I guess we'll stab her.

The orange tape's just for us so that we can find it

again, right? Easy-peasy.

After we do this, the mining recorder actually

gets the plates made with all this information on it,

and then we come in and nail them in, so...

In 1898, the Gustafsson family were the first to discover gold

on what's now called Duncan Creek.

Instead of staking a claim, they tried to keep the find

quiet, hoping no one would catch on.

But in 1901, prospector Duncan Patterson

uncovered their secret, staking the Gustafssons' ground

and dozens of other claims along the creek.

Years later, the creek was named

in Duncan Patterson's honor.

The second one, I don't know if it's gonna be as easy

as this one -- I think we're gonna

drive around to it. -[Ryan] Good, because this body

ain't made for walking. -[laughing]

To get access to the three remaining corners of the claim,

Rick and his crew drive over two miles

searching for an abandoned road once used by fur trappers.

Why don't you go first and see how far you can punch in?

OK, sounds good.

-Yeah, that way. -Let's take the chance.

[Bailey] That is definitely not a road right there.

Animal attacks on people are rare in the Yukon.
