on Upper Narrows in Winthrop.

And we are meeting David Leach

and his daughter
and two grandchildren.

His parents bought
the land in the '60s,

they ended up
building a cabin in the '70s.

And this winter,

a tree fell on their cabin.

and poked
some holes on the roof.

They patched that over,
but they figured

they'd take
this opportunity to, uh,

kind of update the camp.

it's fairly level,

it's on good posting.
It's high and dry,

so one less thing
we really have to worry about.

What are you looking
to have done?

Well, as you look at
the north side of the camp,

we have two tiny bedrooms,

and we'd like
to go out 10 feet,

so it would be
a 10 by 20 foot addition.

- Oh, jeez.
- And if it's not asking too much

we'd like to expand
that teeny bathroom.

We'd like to have
a whole new roof installed

with a little steeper pitch,

a new exterior, new windows.

And we'd actually
like to go up

and have a grandchildren's,

- kids-only sleeping loft...

with a west-facing dormer.

The family keeps growing
and we need more space,

that's for sure.

Is there
a heat sources currently?

There's a heat source
that I don't use.

It's a gas heater,

and I'm not a real fan
of having the big gas tank

next to it,
so if there was another

type of heating system
that you could think of,

-I'm all for it.

The deck looks fairly new.

Yes. We tend to come out
here after work or school,

but we always struggle
with having shade back here.

Do you want

Archaeological
demolition shows us

another layer of carpet,

and I think I might even see
more of linoleum down there.

A smart carpeter
knows to cut it in sections.

Then we had a tree removal

and get the walls all built.

we have to strip it right

back down
to just plates and walls.

it up into sections.

decking over the loft

and starting on roof rafters.

pitch idea we have works,

they're looking at
the possibility

of doing an awning
over this deck.

today and they do awnings.

on the front of the camp

and having an awning

just helps with sun,
helps with weather.

So they're stopping by today

to see if it's possible.

So you can see

we're raising
the pitch of the roof,

so we tore
the whole thing off.

That part's gonna be
dormered over there,

but this is the deck space
and we thought,

you know, it'd be great
to have a little awning

right here just to extend
the life of the deck.

Absolutely. Putting
a retractable awning up

is an awesome addition.

Takes the inside living space,

stretches it
right out into the deck.

-Perfect.
-So a few questions for you,

what kind of roof
are you gonna be

putting on here?

-Metal screw down roofing.
-Okay.

So typically,
we don't mount to metal

just because
of liability reasons.

So we have
something in mind for you.

Is there any way
that we can add

a touch more height
to this wall?

- What's a touch?
- Well, so this wall

is about seven
and a half feet.

I like my awnings
to be around 8 feet.

That's
about all we can get you.

If you can do that,
we'll be going onto the wall.

We were talking
about doing a 4 by 6

rim around
the entire perimeter.

Yeah, I think 8 feet
is pretty much what...

If we can mount into that,

then we'll just do
a traditional awning here.

You guys thought about
what color you want

- for the awning on the south?

So today I came over
to the jobsite,

so that I could meet
with the awning guys.

All I had to do
was kind of pick out a color.

If Chase chose the color,
you never know

what he's gonna choose.

with almond frame
and a sand dune fabric.

I think that'd be
a nice neutral option

-for the wood siding here.

Finley said she wanted orange
for a camp color,

and I just know
that an almond color

would look nice with that.

to give 'em enough space
to get the awning in.

your rafters right to that.

Once we get that set,

then we get pattern
cut out for the rafters.

We want to make sure
this lines up clean here.

We're installing a five-rib
metal screw down roof.

Everything has been
already ordered to cut,

so there'll be
very little cutting involved.

It's pretty easy installation.

Put your drip edge down.

The guys on the ground
handing panels up,

and we've got
inch-long screws,

so none of the screws
will poke through

the sheathing on the inside.

try and get this roof on,

so she's weather tight.

Just had torrential rain,

so we're just trying
get more and more

erosion control right now.

The water we're on,
Upper Narrows

is actually the source
of drinking water

for the town of Winthrop,
so it's all about stabilizing

the shoreline and mitigating

the flow of rainwater
and debris into the lake.

So we're gonna make
a nice meandering path

that water can hit
and flow off from.

Trigger, what are you doing?

He likes digging holes,
but not in the right spots.

And in the bay areas
we're gonna put

erosion control mulch.

Trigger.

And then
where the boat traffic

and ice has
beaten up the shoreline,

we're gonna pack
some more rocks in it.

On the inside of the camp,

Brad and his team
are sheathing up the walls.

You know,
no good deed goes unpunished.

We're trying to get this done

and it's just taking
everything we got.

We've got Weston and Alex

And we are going to try

and bang out some floors.

Get the place finished off
with the staining exterior

We use 12-inch
shiplap rough side up,

base nailing it down.

You know, divided
into two bedrooms

in the main room,

so it really was
just cut and go.

Summer Space showed up today

to install the awning
over the front porch.

This is gonna work great.

So give us about an hour
and we'll get this up.

They love spending time
outdoors on the waterside.

On a sunny day, the awning

gives them a little cover

when the sun's
glaring down on 'em

and should be nice addition.

I love it.

So this remote
is pretty easy to use.

Out, in,
stop anywhere you want.

So when we send it out,
limits are set.

It'll go out
to the desired position

which is gonna be
just beyond the railing.

And then, when this awning
gets all the way out,

we also included
a drop screen on this awning.

- Ha!
- We keep it fancy.

- Yeah. Very nice.

You don't wanna lose
the remote control.

Okay. So I think
it's 16-foot board.

We're gonna only need 14 feet.

I got a 2-foot drop or
a 3-foot drop like that.

They're not really
good to have

all the seams in a big room,

but in the bathroom,
I'm just gonna do

a funky little pattern
and use them up.

We'll put a bunch of poly
on it, it'll look great.

It's all scrap.

It'll be kind of funky.

Boom.

And it's funky.
It's a funky floor.

We like funky floors.

Now that the floors are done,

I'm starting
to polyurethane the floors.

Just a dark stain.

I just wanna get them
treated as quickly as possible

so they don't get scuffed up.

It's been a couple weeks
since I've checked in

at Leach camp,
so I wanted to come out today

and see how far along
the progress has come.

I want to check on the color.

I chose a nice orange
for the trim.

The orange is a little bit
more red orange

than it looked
when I chose it,

but I still really like it,

and I think it will work.

I got the basket.

Did you guys know basketball
started with peach basket?

Bet you didn't.

So I really wanted
to do something

for their grandson Grady.

He had one request

and that was
for an indoor basketball hoop.

A hoop?

I brought it
to the camp but it just...

So I settled
on a small little one

that we purchased.

finished staining
and polyurethaning
the floors,

put in the loft railing,

put a set of stairs
off the front of the deck,

and new cabinets.

Gonna put the sinks
and flushes in.

It fits.

Getting used
to the red and blue thing.

It's like I'm getting
pulled over by an ambulance.

are the heat pump could go

of the propane heater.

The condensing unit
is on the exterior.

A place like this
that has some insulation,

heat pumps are a good option.

We're a couple days later
due to weather,

but we can still have
a birthday celebration

in the last day or two
to get everything decorated.

We made one special corner
for Finley.

We put the bureau

that Lucy and I
remodeled for her

in the corner and turned it

to a magnificent art station.

for her birthday party
and we are ready to give

the camp back
to the Leach family.

Hot day at camp today,
90 degrees.

A delicious lobster
roll lunch, yummy, yummy.

Found a journal and I was
waiting around for Chase,

so I put a little entry in.

Andy took my prototype
basketball hoop,

put a Cabin Masters
spin on it,

painted some lines
on the backboard

and it's awesome.

It looks great
and it's one of a kind.

than over the kitchen.

We had $55,000 and 12 weeks

to renovate the Leach camp.

We added a 10 by 20 addition,

put a dormer
on the west-facing side,

expanded the bedrooms,
expanded the bathroom,

new floors, and painted
with new siding.

Cabin Masters have
officially finished the build

and are ready to return
the cabin to the Leach family

and celebrate
Finley's birthday.

We had the Friends
of Cobbossee Watershed

Youth Conservation Corps
come in,

put down some erosion
control prevention.

Because when we put
on the addition,

it kind of shifted
everything anyways.

Put in this drip edge
to help slow water down

going to the lake.

You know, we've always
been great stewards

of the environment here.

And to have Friends
of the Cobbossee Watershed

and their conservation corps
to improve the waterfront,

I mean, that is
what we're all about.

So pretty.

We got in here,
tore the old roof off,

and then, we dropped
a couple of those hemlocks.

Got the posts set
and then put the addition

10 feet out that way.

New siding, new trim color,

The trim, we got
a nice deep orange stain

because we know someone
loves the color orange.

I like it.

Increased
the pitch of the roof

and new metal roofing.

That's just everything
we could ever imagine.

we tore the roof off of it.

We ended up
cathedraling ceiling,

new windows throughout,
new kitchen, new countertops.

We went with a dark stain

and a nice loft ladder

up to it.
Bigger bedrooms downstairs.

I really liked
the art space that I got.

a nice big area

There's even
more surprises outside.

Couldn't really have

like the whole family stay,

but now we can have,
like, everyone there.

It's so cute.

- So before, you know,

there wasn't a set
of stairs on the deck.

We were able to cut
into the railing,

put a new set
of stairs off the deck,

so closer access
to the waters.

And we know how much
you love sitting outside,

so we had this awning
installed for some shade.

Whoa.

We always struggle
with having shade back here.

This is gonna be so perfect

for the nights
that we come out here.

We like to sit
outside and just knowing now

that we can do that
comfortably,

so that's gonna be
really awesome.
