has a toy drive

to help collect toys
for the holiday season.

So we've decided we're going
to help out any way we can.

Yeah. How long has
United Way of Kennebec Valley
been formed?

We're at our 67th year now.

49 different
non-profit programs

throughout Kennebec County.

We focus on health, education,

financial stability programs.

So, what exactly
are you guys looking for?

So we'd love to have you
help out with the toy drive.

Really want to do something
for the youth in our community

around the holiday season.

We have
a perfect spot for that.

- Oh, yeah?

So we have a great place
at our headquarters

and where we can invite
the community.

My team will decorate it,
make it really festive.

We know plenty
of good carpenters

who are capable of making
nice wooden toys.

So, you know,

if we could also make
some toys for the toy drive,

we would love to get involved
that way also.

Put our little spin on it
as well.

I know the kids
would love that.

Wooden toys are
coming back into fashion.

We were those kids
that didn't get the toys

that everyone else got.
We got all the wooden toys.

and a stick.

Which are a lot of fun.

of Maine up in Dedham
to meet with Jim.

He is a toy-making master.

This is where
we make the toys.

We're getting ready
to do our United Way
of Kennebec Valley toy drive

and we're gonna make
some toys,

so I figured the best way
to get inspiration,

advice, what to do,
what not to do,

from the master
toy maker himself.

We got some stuff
I can show you that...

is very replicable,
if that's a word.

That is now.

Here's a bunch of stuff.

This is stuff
that I do in volume.

Holy smokes.

Here's how I do it.

I have a template
for everything.

Ah.

-Yeah. Yup, yup.

-Yup.

Let's just lay out
two or three of these

-and we'll go through
the individual steps.

So next step would be
over at the chop saw.

Go ahead and section those up.

at Jim's wood shop

and the tools that he has...

So I've just got to figure out
what we're gonna make

so that when we all
get together, you know,
the whole crew,

we're able to replicate
a bunch of toys.

So we thought it would be cool
if you guys would come in

and just kind of button it up.

Sounds like
his happy story.

Today, we're in Wayne, Maine
and we're at Chase's house.

We are going to make a plan
to fix up his sugar shack

while we are on vacation
in Greece.

Chase is actually up on
an inspirational field trip,

checking out this guy
that makes
really cool wooden toys.

That's why we're here
right now

'cause we snuck him out here

so he doesn't know
anything about this.

-It's top secret.

So, being his birthday,
I think it'd be nice

if we just, like,
could bang it out,

finish it off so that then
he can actually

come down and use it.

And, you know,
we'll benefit in the end

Chase's got a ton
of maple trees out here.

He's tapped them
for quite a while.

Just gonna facilitate him
to produce some maple syrup

in his off time.

So we're going to Greece
for 10 days.

So I think if we have
all the guys on it

while we're gone, we can
get it to a great point

where he can use it
this spring.

-All right. We got a budget?
-We do have a budget.

I got Chase's credit card,
so whatever you need.

Nice.

- Seriously...
- -That was just a joke.

We don't wanna go
over $10,000 on this.

It's our gift to him.

Everyone's working with us.
But $10K, that's it.

-We have windows left over.

We got a bunch of materials.

A lot of it is
all right here.

We need sheathing boards.

You guys are gonna go
get greasy

and we're gonna stay here
and get sticky.

Nails, hammers,
and some abled bodies

and we'll have this done
in 10 days.

I found three siding guns.

It's gonna take us
five days to clean it out

Bazooka. Aw.

Bazooka, he is
Chase's first dog

and he pretty much went
everywhere Chase went.

And he passed away.

So we put a memorial
on the sugar shack,

well, just as a little
remembrance for Bazooka.

There's a lot going on.

Yeah, he has all
the basic components.

Right there is
the stove that he cooks it in.

So it's basically...

it has a big wood-fired boiler

with a stainless steel
evaporator on the top of it

and it just evaporates the sap

into syrup.

I do think I might have
a couple windows

- we could put up there to get some more light in.
- -Mmm-hmm.

Maybe, Ry, if we could put
maybe two windows

- in these bigger openings here up high, too.
- -Okay.

Definitely, the more that
we can open up, the better.

We need
six 8-foot PT posts.

We need pots.
We need stove pipe.

We need 1 by 12 sheathing.

And then we need

one, two, three,
four, five windows.

On the inside,
we are going to clean it up.

We're gonna try
to organize it.

We will trim out the windows
if appropriate

and we're gonna add high-end
maple manufacturing equipment

in the right place
for him to enjoy it.

Try to use
whatever materials he has

because he'd be happy
about that.

And obviously,
it'll save on the budget.

- We have to buy a little bit of stuff, but yes.
- -Not much.

On the outside
of Chase's sugar shack,

we are gonna install
windows where needed.

We are gonna fix
the roof lines,

add front doors,
and we're gonna side.

Seventeen feet.

Oh, come on. Ah!

I'm not gonna be able
to get this out.

We might
have a problem.

If I can't get this tape out,

he's gonna know we were here.

I got an idea.

So it goes something
like that.

Okay. I just met
with Jim up in Dedham.

People always ask
why I keep marbles
in the workshop.

And he had a lot
of great ideas, good advice.

This thing used
to keep us busy for hours.

One thing I did learn was that

he starts with a template

and then kind of makes
all the pieces and parts.

So when it comes time
for assembly,

he has everything
together ready to go.

And hopefully,
I can translate that

into five good, decent toys.

Just a few tweaks to it.

My father actually was
a wooden toy maker

and he had a few good designs

Ashley and I grew up
playing with.

One of them was a marble chute

that you put marbles in,

kinds of feeds back and forth
and drops into a container.

That one should be good to go.

That's toy number one.

I also had
a couple pieces of dowel

that had been shaped
into stars and hearts.

Always wanted to do something
with those,

so I thought they would be

a good kind of version
of tic-tac-toe.

And another was
a little wooden duck.

Put a string through
with a knob.

Drilled out two holes.
You put these wheels on it,

but the wheels are off center.

So that way, when you pull it
along, it kind of bobbles.

Brainstorming,
I remember a wooden top.

Okay.

Piece of string.

Oh, this thing's
gonna go flying.

Just in time. Come here.

You wanna do the honors?

Pull that string.

- What string?
- Pull that ball.

- This?
- Hard.

Nice!

I don't see any reason
why these prototypes

with the little modifications
won't work.

The next step really
will be

start mass producing
the parts.

So, I'm here today
at my aunt Sharon

and Uncle Leigh's house

to make Christmas ornaments.

I told you we are

working with
the United Way
of Kennebec Valley

and we're doing a toy drive

and then we're gonna
decorate headquarters
and have a big party,

which hopefully
you'll come to.

- Oh, thank you.
- But I'm in charge

of decorating the tree.

- As we well should be.
- -Oh, yeah.

And I was, like,
first president on the dollar,

first people of

So Sharon and Leigh make
a whole variety

of Christmas ornaments.

They do a puffin
on the lobster claw.

This is a recent eat.

How was he? How did he taste?

Delicious.

They make
these really cute Santas
on oyster shells.

I got a deal
with a local oyster farm

and I would make these

and I would sell them
down there.

And the trade was, I would get
a half a dozen oysters

for every one I sold.

Oh, I forgot that.

-Oh, really?
-Yeah.

That's a good trade.

And they make these
really cute lobster buoys.

I like
the white ones.

I think the white ones
look good

- on a green Christmas tree.
- Oh, yeah.

So to make the buoys,
you take your buoy,

uh, and you drill
a hole in the top.

And then you attach it
to the drill.

What?

And then you take
the white paint.

This is fancy.

Yeah, it is.

It's the lazy man's...

where the lazy comes from,
my nickname.

I've never heard that.

And then after it dries,

you attach an eye hook.

Boom.

Then you pick whatever color
you wanna use for your stripe.

-I'm doing blue.
-Yeah.

-Turn on your drill.
-Yeah.

-Yeah. Yeah. Just--
-Is that we do?

Perfect.

And it goes around

and it makes a perfect line
around the whole buoy.

Oh, yeah. There we go.
That's wobble.

And it's ready too.

I came up with
for the toy drive

for United Way

So we've got the marble shoot,

version of tic-tac-toe.

We've got a lobster claw top,

- rocking horse.
- These are awesome.

And the old classic
pull behind duck.

- Oh, I get it.
- I do, too.

What kind of duck is it?

That's a wheelie duck.

It's
a wheelie cool duck.

We're gonna try
and do 20 of each toy.

Today, it's just a matter
of milling stuff up,

ripping it down,

getting as much
of the pieces cut out,

sanding the edges,
routering the edges,

smoothing everything down,

and then
putting it all together.

Today, was just gonna be
a lot of assembly work,

you know, just repetitive.

Cutting out the same thing
over and over and over.

I wanna make sure we have
more than enough pieces
for each toy

so we don't have to go back
and fabricate pieces.

There's a level of consistency

that comes when you
just repetitively make

the same piece over and over
versus having somebody else

do it another day.

So, if we can get
all the pieces cut out today,

I'll be happy.

One.

Cuts are gonna be
very precise.

All these different stations,
everybody had their job.

It was like
Santa's little workshop
in there.

It's so loud.

Everybody's working.
It's awesome.

- What?
- We got a little workshop.

I'm working
on milling up the pieces

for the lobster claw top.

So I'm just gonna go through
and cut everything to length

and then drill the holes.

And then trace everything.

Very happy with the toy
which I selected.

in a wonderful way.

I am sanding the dowels
after I drill them.

So it fits into the claw.

So, um, we leave
on Saturday to Greece,

but I think we're looking good
for Chase's project,

up a job this week,

so we'll put him

So today, my job was working
on the tic-tac-toe boards.

Once we were done
with the face,

then I had to cut out

uh, 96 stars and 96 hearts.

One down,

ninety-four to go.

Look at all those stars
and all those hearts.

Ninety-six of each.

So the next step is
really assembly time.

And there's a lot of pieces
that need to be
nailed together,

screwed together,
glued together.

We'll probably start
with a rocking horse

because all the pieces are

sitting on the center table
and we need to clear space

to keep moving forward.

at Chase's Sugar Shack.

Do you want to, kind of,

We gotta keep all the sugar,

maple stuff together.

Chase, Ryan, and Ashley,
they've gone to Greece,

so we're on a bit
of a time crunch,

trying to sneak it in.

Keep in your head
where you put stuff

-in case he freaks out.
-Yeah.

As you know, Chase is a bit

of a architectural
salvage guy.

So putting it nicely,

there was a bunch
of architectural salvage
kicking around.

So we're just gonna get
all organized.

$5 if you ride this unicycle.

Move it over
to the other side

of the property
for when he needs it.

Basically,
we did clean up around

the whole structure,
so we can actually get

to what we wanna work on
and ready to go for tomorrow.

So day two here with Chase's.

Got it.

We got the overhangs packed,

and sheared up
with new posts.

We're gonna work
on putting windows in

and get it prepped and ready
to do siding.

Hold yours in nice
and tight.

The boys went through

and they got all
the rough openings done.

And we're trying to resource
pretty much anything

that we can find on premise.

- Yup.

The windows we had here,

and this is gonna help
to release a lot of the steam

that occurs
when you're evaporating sap.

A lot of the materials
we had here,

because there's a lot
of stuff here.

Chase likes funky things.

So I figured
that using this door

that's all glass,
he would like for light,

and we're gonna frame it flush
with the outside of sheathing.

Hmm. He'll have
a fixed door window.

Fancy stuff

It's coming
together nicely.

Okay. So Miguel,
this is the space

that we're working with here.

Perfect.

Today, we have
Miguel coming in

to go over a evaporator setup

and lines for the sugar shack.

So what are
your thoughts, Miguel?

A small evaporator,
wood-fired,

would be perfect in here.

We could make a system
that'll be simple,

so that when he comes home,
he can come down

and maybe turn a valve
and start a fire

- and he's boiling.
- Cool.

Why don't we go check
the lines out?

Let's do it.

Well, looking
at this tubing,

it's a little bit dated.

And I think we could put in
a brand-new system

and try to get all
of these trees

and all come down
to one line,

and run right beside
the sugar house,

and dump right into a tank.

And when he gets home,
he can go right
to the sugar house.

So,
when you tap a tree,

you first tap
and it goes into the line

and then the sap is drawn
into the holding tank.

From the holding tank,

it's pumped
into the evaporator,

and then the evaporator,
the wood-fired boiler will

boil off any extra moisture

or water
to turn it into syrup.

There is a fair amount of work
by the time we, you know,

run all new lines,

get the holding tanks
over near the sugar shack

and get the evaporator in.

If we can make it happen,
Chase would be very happy.

the front of the building.

Today, we're
at the sugar shack.

There's a lot of moving parts
to this operation.

We're trying to get it done

before Chase gets back

the boys are gonna build

some barn doors
from materials they found

in Chase's salvage yard.

So all this will cost
is a little bit of time

and some elbow grease.

It's gonna be
two barn doors.

So build the flats
of each door.

at the sugar shack.

We're almost out
of the sticky situation.

We've got about
five days before Chase, Ryan,

and Ash get home from Greece.

All the boys have
to do is throw up some trim

and we can start siding.

The guys are gonna
install the doors

and we're pretty much done
with the exterior.

all new sap lines

and tension wire,
so we don't have

any sags in the sap line.

We're gonna hook
all these tubes

to every single tree.

one pipe

that brings it all down.

We wanna run it all
right to the sugar house.

So this one will be
the main sap tank

which will drop the...

and run the sap directly...

right out of the woods.

We've got
two brand new tanks.

One that will run
from the trees

- right into the tank.

And then one
that will elevate

to feed the evaporator.

For the sugar house,

we brought a brand new
18 by 60 evaporator.

So now, where would
the tubing come in?

Well,
the tubing in the woods

is gonna feed the tanks

right outside
of the building.

Then we'll just make
one hole in the wall here

from that tank...

Yup.

...right into the evaporator.

There'll be no more
collecting sap

up behind the house,

dragging it down here

-and spilling half of it.
-Right.

I mean, there's still
gonna be work, but it's...

- Yes.
- ...gonna be a lot less work

day to day and something
where he can come home

and if he wants to boil
for a couple hours,

he can come out
and just start right in.

He can come down
and boil. Yeah.

Pretty much got everything
in place.

Just need to have
the decorating crew come in

and make it real sugary.

Yeah. They come back
from Greece

and we'll be able
to turn this over.

We just returned home

from an amazing trip
to Greece.

So now, I am in charge
of wrapping all of the gifts

that we made for United Way
of Kennebec Valley.

So I decided a nice
little touch would be

to make my own wrapping paper.

I have some
of these rubber stamps,

so I am thinking
about doing holiday lights.

I'm just gonna kind of
draw out a design

and then with these tools,
I'm just gonna dig them out.

So what you're doing
is you're digging

the negative space I drew.

This is gonna be the print.

So I need to dig up
everything around,

so the print pops.

Let's do this.

For the holiday lights,
I took one color,

applied the paint
to the stamp.

Ready Freddy.

Stamped all over the paper,
switched out my color,

and then just
repeated, repeated,

until I was satisfied
with the amount of lights

around the page.

I took my marker and filled in

where the base of the bulb is.

So now we're just gonna start
making some wires.

Everybody else has a wire?

so everything is pitched
and gravity-fed

to holding tanks
on the underside of this.

'cause they're so big,

like the rocking horses.

So we came up with this idea
to get a boat,

and then just set all
of the rocking horses

into the boat.
