compares to the freedom I feel out here.

to build a homestead

for ourselves and our kids.

is an extremely important thing,

and being on land is tradition.

There is something spiritual
that always brings me back here.

This is my roots.

This is where I belong.

But living off here takes a lot of effort.

A lot of it.

nothing is easy.

You have to earn everything.

running into obstacles.

[woman 1] The Plata trapline is one
of the most remote traplines in the Yukon.

[plane engine roaring]

It's only accessible by plane,

which makes it pretty complicated
to get here.

It's, it's very remote.

I'm on my own out here.

[music swells]

I gotta go scouting the area...

...see where I can put my base camp.

I'm happy there is not that much snow,
at least for today.

Okay. Let's go. Come on, bud.

Right now, I'm still an assistant trapper.

I work for a trapper...

...and I take care
of the trapline for him.

Trapping allows me
to live here full time...

...to live as much as I can
off the land...

...and actually have a life here.

This trap line is huge.

It's over 3,000 km² of wilderness,

and for many years,
trappers made a life here.

But in 2017, a huge forest fire
ended it all.

That's why I'm here now

and I'm going to start by building a cabin

and make this trapline livable again.

[soft music playing]

It was a natural forest fire
that burned the whole place down.

This area here was used by a family.

There is just metal left, pretty much,
there's not much else.

It's, it's sad to see that people
were living here for years and years,

had probably very happy moments,

and now it's just a pile of garbage,

so it's very sad to see.

Yeah, that's quite the mess.

Oh, there's a bunch of traps.

There's big guys for beavers
and wolverines.

There's a leghold trap.

I don't really like to use them.

I like to use quick kills.

I'm sure I can come back
and check for some treasures,

but I don't see myself building
a long-term home here

with all the junk around
and all the traces from the past.

My dream would be just pure wildness.

No, no human traces at all.

So, I got to check that old map
that this trapper gave me.

I know there is a cache
at the end of the valley there,

and I know there is a bunch of gear
in there that I can use.

So, hopefully, everything is intact.

Okay. Let's go, let's go, let's go.

So, I'm going to go to the cache
and hopefully

I find a cool spot around there
to start building.

[soft music playing]

[man 2] Heading back to the cabin.

This is my first time
coming back here in over a year.

Yeah, we're up in the bush.

This is a, you know,
two and a half hour drive.

I mean, it's out here.

No cell service, fully off grid...

...and just a paradise, if you ask me.

Come on.

This is the cabin.

This is John's Pond, my favorite place.

Spent a lot of time here.

It means a lot to me, this place.

I've been coming up to these woods,
this lake, this bush,

since I was nine years old.

Coming back to the cabin
after not being here for so long

is like seeing an old friend.

I've been bouncing
all over the world for years now,

in all different sorts of adventures,
and going pretty hard.

And I'm really looking forward

to slowing down a little bit

and making the cabin my full-time home.

This is where most of the work
is going to happen.

I'm going to put an addition here
for two bedrooms,

and this will allow me to make
the cabin much more livable,

much more like a house...

...compared to just a fishing camp,
hunting camp.

It's a big time crunch to get it done

because this ground needs to be excavated,
flattened out, before winter.

Once the snow comes,

this ground freezes,
we'll never be able to do it.

We're definitely fighting the clock.

Oh, yeah. Look at this.

Must have been some storm.

Trees blown down right over the outhouse.

Very lucky it didn't hit the outhouse.

It'd be a pretty rough day sitting
in that shitter in a wind storm

and having those trees
blown onto the roof.

That's got to be taken care of
pretty quick.

The shed.

Shingles are missing, tarp is missing.

This doesn't look good.

There's some rotten,
rotten roof right there.

I can almost kick through that.
Oh.

Holy shit.

Look how rotten that is.

This is the only thing we got to protect
our dry firewood for the winter.

Obviously, rain's getting in here.

I mean, it's already late November.

Winter's coming.

[woman 2] Peawanuck is, it's a small town.

About 200 people, and I love it.

You guys want to come out?
We'll start putting stuff in.

It's always been our dream

to build a cabin out in the woods.

It's a place to take our family
to have a little bit of peace and quiet.

we have three kids.

Annie is my eldest.

Everybody compliments her red hair.

It just kind of makes who she is.

And then, we have Mikael.

And he's what we always refer to
as our golden child.

He's so good.

And then, we have Brooke,
and she runs the whole family.

[woman 2] Should we grab the chainsaw?

[Brooke] Yeah.

[Gilbert] It's very important
for my children

to learn the old ways,
to be outside and use the land.

[Emilie] Building a home away from home...

I think it's really going to help us
and the kids to connect to the land

and disconnect from the internet,
from the phones, from work...

...and we can be together
as a family without any distractions.

This is a good place to just get away, you
know?

I'm like a nature guy.

Indoors is, I get claustrophobic.

Ah, it's kind of bushy here.

Like city folks, you know...

...I don't know how they can do that,
stay in, stay in skyscrapers.

Yeah, this is going to be
a permanent trail,

so we can have supplies going in and out.

It'll be really easy in the wintertime
because we'll have snowmobiles.

You've got diapers
coming out of your pocket.

[Gilbert chuckling]

[Emilie] All the trees we cut down,
we're going to be using all of it.

This stuff is the best to start fires.

We're going to heat up our camp.

We're going to cook our food over it.

Nothing is going to waste out here.

We have to respect the land
and take only what we need.

We just take care of the land,
and the land takes care of us.

I haven't been here
for more than ten years...

...but this place
is always calling me back.

Built it in 2007.

63 days, it took me 63 days.
[chuckles]

I lived there for a year.

No electricity, no running water.

That was my place, my home.

I've spent so much time in the city.

The older I get, the more
I want to make a life here.

But there is a lot of things to do.

It needs to be fixed,
in order to live in this cabin.

[chuckles]
Yeah, this is rotten.

Cannot use it anymore.
I will need to fix it.

So, it's adding
to the list of things to do.

Oh, the oven, still standing.

The door needs to be fixed.

because an animal dug a hole.

man, it's been over ten years.

I cannot use it anymore. It's old.

I really need to tear it down.

Of course, you know, I can tear it down
with a tractor, you know.

That would be easier, actually.

But, you know, I love history,
I love the skills from the old-timers.

It's harder than we thought.

is just to clean up the place

and after, start the foundation

a normal nine to five job.

This is my life, outdoors.

Just try and be present as I can
and just enjoy every minute.

[Margot] Being self-sufficient,
it can get tiring,

but it's very rewarding.

It's why people do this.

[Billy] There is something spiritual here.

There is something deeper.

There is a feeling of freedom.

I just love it.

We gotta get this old
rotten plywood off...

...so we can put fresh stuff down.

If I didn't do this now
and the rest of shed rotted out,

then all the firewood gets wet
and you got no dry wood.

A woodshed is your vault, your bank.

You gotta keep your wood safe.

Without the firewood,
everything else stops.

You can't live here.

This is so much easier than taking it off.

This is enjoyable.

Gotta turn genny on to run power.

I mean, we are off grid up here.

May look like a nice cabin,

but we're in the middle
of nowhere, no power.

And I don't have the fancy
battery-powered tools.

The classic old school plug ins.

So, that's, that's why we got that.
And I hate the sound of a genny,

I don't know, it just ruins the ambience,
completely takes you out of the woods.

May as well be in the city
as soon as you turn a generator on.

I hate it. I fucking hate it.

There's no way I could live
in a city full time.

The more time that goes on,
the more time that I'm out here

in these remote places and living alone...

...the harder it would be to go back.

As a young person in the city right now,
I'd be struggling to get by

and chase a career
and to get my bit in the world.

Out here, I'm a rich man.

I have everything I need, I have
a beautiful piece of land, I have a home,

I have my dog, I have my tools,
and I have, you know, my passions.

My time is my own.

And that is the most valuable thing
there is, is your time.

[generator powering down]

What a fucking racket.

Jesus, ruins it for me.

Nothing like a set of shingles
to cover up all your mistakes.

Everything out here just needs
to be functional.

It doesn't really matter
if this thing is perfectly square

or looks exactly right,
as long as it stays dry,

keeps the rain, keeps snow off
the firewood, that's all that matters.

Now, I just gotta fill it with firewood.

And right now, the easiest wood

is these few blowovers
that went down in the last storm.

Everyone knows a shitter
is a man's throne,

so, those trees are very threatening
right now.

It can be a bad situation real quick.

Gotta come down.

Look how rotten that is.

Look at that.
That's hollow.

That's not good firewood.

No wonder it broke off.

Hopefully, the other ones will be better.

Rotten wood is just as good as wet wood,
I mean, it's no good.

Yeah, you can burn it,
but it's just a bunch of fluff,

you're not going to get any energy
or real heat out of it.

You want some good, hard, dry wood.

Straight in the woodshed.

One of my favorite parts
of cutting firewood...

...is the smell, that fresh spruce,
fresh fir.

Oh my God, so good.

Just rub it on your armpits.

You want a smell that's going

Take some of the sawdust,
rub is on you, go to town...

...drive them wild.

[Margot] I like being alone in the bush.

I love feeling small.

You just feel like you're part of nature.

I grew up in a small village in France.

Came to Canada when I was 18 years old...

...and then, made my way up to the Yukon.

I feel like I belong here.

[music swells]

So, that's the cache I was hoping
to find on my little map,

so that's, that's a good sign,
it's still standing.

There's supposed to be
a bunch of gear in there.

The cache was built by the first trapper
that was here in the 70s,

so it's surprisingly
still in very good shape.

I'm excited to see what's up there.

It feels like a, like a treasure hunt.

There's no claw signs on the post.

This is one of the most important parts
of the cache.

So animals can't climb up,
because it's slippery.

It happened to me one time,
one nail was a little bit sticking out,

and the wolverine used it
to climb all the way up

and stole a bunch of caribou meat.

So, you got to be really careful
that everything is flat.

[ladder rattling]

I want to make sure that thing
is not too rotten,

because nobody has been here
in a couple years,

so I'm not sure if the boards
are still good.

It might be interesting
to go up there and see

if I'm going to go through those boards.
So, we'll see how it goes.

That is really cool.

A cache is basically safe storage,

where you want to put
all your safety gear,

all your tools, all the stuff you need.

Bunch of traps here.

It's essential to have a cache,
just for safety, first of all.

Looks like a wool tent to me.

That's awesome.

I got a wool tent now,
which is a good start,

to have somewhere to sleep
until I get the cabin done.

It's going to get cold pretty soon,

so I gotta hurry to find a good spot
for the wool tent before it's too dark.

That's going to be cozy.

Five-star hotel.

I will need to cut
a couple poles for that...

...now that I know
how wide and long it is.

[chuckles]

The bush is where I feel the most alive...

...and where I feel the most myself.

It's not easy,
especially when you're alone.

You have to earn everything.

You get to know your limits,
and you get to know yourself.

Yeah, I love that.

That's why I'm here.

Just trying to be a bush engineer.

Most of the bush people that I know,

they got the knowledge passed on
from couple generations.

But for me, just I had
to teach myself everything.

that not much people around me...

...at least in my family,
before I moved here,

would know stuff about.

So, just my own mistakes
taught me a lot.

When you work outside in the bush,
you've got to be creative.

So, you just have to figure it out

and improvise and, and have fun, mostly,

because if you want to be perfect
in the woods, don't go in the woods.

The base is almost done.

After the walls and everything,

to build a base camp

close to our construction site.

It's a place that we can go rest,
warm up, cook our food, and sleep.

a non-Indigenous person

living in an Indigenous community,
especially one so remote.

-Where's the marking?

[Emilie] I never really felt like I fit in

to living in an urban area,
so I decided to do northern nursing.

And I remember thinking,
"Wow, I feel so at peace here.

This is where I want to plant my roots."

It takes a while to get used
to using an ax,

but it's going a lot better now
than it did six years ago.

That's for sure.

Gilbert will probably have
to cut this one.

It's really long. You know what?
I could do it.

she never was raised in the bushes,

What a difference from yesterday,
it's so much harder now.

there's six seasons, not four seasons.

Right now, we're in the freeze up.

It's like a transition
from fall to winter.

Ground's freezing right now.

So, we're in a race against time
to dig holes

for the foundation for our cabin.

Every day, it gets worse.

Another week,
this would have been really hard.

It's like cement.

but it's not your enemy.

So, you just have to adapt.

like, I feel pride.

Of course, like lifting the logs,
cutting a tree with an ax,

not easy, but you feel the reward after.

Very proud.

I see the sunset, it's beautiful.

Now, I'm ready for the winter.

I still have a lot of work to do,
but the snow can fall. I'm ready.

That feels nice, feels very nice.

Even better because
of the fire here at the cabin,

the best fire you could have.

Lighting the fire is the real first step
of getting comfortable here.

Now, it's time to transition this place
from hunting/fishing cabin

into a full-on living cabin.

Maximum sleeping capacity
was the name of the game up until now.

Now that I'm living here as a home,
this is going to come out,

just make it nice and cosy
for myself and Ronnie.

So, first thing we got to do
is get this loft out.

This will all come apart
from the top down.

Should be pretty easy.

When we put all this in, the more people
we could sleep, the better.

We'd come up here
on a big fishing trip or a skidoo trip...

...the boys all load into the cabin.

But now I'm up here to live every day,

so I don't want a bunch of empty bunks

when that could be free space
for me and Ronnie.

Nobody ever likes
sleeping in a loft anyway.

The loft is way, way too warm.

I built this place with my old man.

Kind of a team effort, my old man,
some friends, over the years.

They're happy for me to kind of
transform it into my own place.

It's kind of like a new leaf.

That's it. The loft is out.

So much lumber came out of that.

Oh, look at that.

So much space.

Eventually, you'll have
a doorway right here.

Another doorway going into
the new bedrooms we're going to build.

And we'll put a big kitchen here.
It's going to be beautiful.

Now, this is a one-person cabin now.

There's still a lot of work to do in here,

but it's really starting
to feel like home,

which is important,
you don't want to feel

like you're in a camp

like this, personalizing it for myself.

It feels good. It feels really good.

It's a family place, a place to share.

We're not going just build a house,
we're going to build memories.

I'm stripping the bark, so it doesn't rot.

you add 30 years,

maybe 40 years, before it rots.

I've been learning lots of stuff,
and this is certainly a new one.

is for the kids,

a small log cabin...

...so I'm hoping to find a place in a good
little piece of forest with straight logs.

I think it looks pretty flat

Yeah, I think this place could work.

I can hear the river still,
so it's right there,

there's just a couple hundred yards.

It's also a good area for trapping.

Yeah, it's perfect.

Nowadays, there is not many wild places
like this in the world...

...so I feel very privileged
to live this lifestyle.

Some people live in the city
their entire life,

and they never had silence around them.
