[Berry vo] You should be here
in Lincoln when they have an

execution.

[Faint echoes of
laughter and cheers]

The people partying and
drinking beer and yelling.

A smaller group
with candles praying.

Ominous music

[mckee vo] One of the
penitentiary guards was taking

him to the room, and Charley
says, "what's your hurry?"

[Cell door slams]

Executions are always scheduled
for early-morning hours because

there is a tremendous
drain on electricity.

[O'Donnell vo] When they were
strapping him in the electric

chair, he said, "these
straps are too loose.

Would you please tighten them?"

And then, they asked him
if he had any last words,

and he said, "no."

[Mckee vo] It came and
it went and it was done.

1959, he was gone.

[Male reporter] Okay,
Floyd, you just came out.

Did it disturb you?

No, it didn't
particularly disturb me.

I...

I have been concerned about my
own feelings of compassion and

emotion since then and
wondering why it didn't.

Sparse dramatic music

nothing.

Eerie music

[Larkin vo] [Chuckling] There
was no way Charley was going

anywhere but to the afterlife.

You watched all of the
anger and hurt and fear,

and with Charley gone, there
was only one person left to take

that pain out on and it was her.

People wanted payback.

Her hands were
bound in front of her,

and there was a
gag on her mouth.

[Man vo] It was the first of
its kind... these rebels without

a cause killing
people for no reason.

You could feel the fear
just on the TV itself.

[Man vo] Charley starkweather
saw himself as James Dean.

I think he's crazy.

[Man vo] Caril always
wanted to be somebody.

She wanted to be a star.

[Woman vo] I thought, "oh, wow,
is she a hard-lookin' broad."

[Man vo] I see,
really, a scared little girl.

[Man vo] The only two people
who witnessed what went on were

Charles
starkweather and caril fugate,

and everybody else is dead.

Few of us have occasion to know
women who have been in jail...

And even fewer who have
been in a penitentiary.

And this is not surprising,
primarily because a woman must

commit a shocking crime, indeed,
and be completely rejected by

the community before the
court will incarcerate a woman.

Suspenseful synth music

[Anderson vo] There's
always been a kind of willful

innocence.

It's all nice, it's all
one nice middleclass,

we're nice to each
other, it's prospering.

And whatever we do is
okay because we're good,

we're the good guys."

That has always been there.

[Male vo] The state contended
that caril fugate willingly

aided and abetted starkweather
in this crime and was equally

guilty under the law.

And she was in this
absolutely paralyzing situation.

[Male reporter] Caril!

[Male vo] Led near-collapse
from the courtroom,

she became the youngest person
ever to face life imprisonment

in this state.

Reformatory that she did.

Control, bring a
closure to it, and move on.

But with caril, I'm not sure
she would understand what prison

was...

Until, you know, it happened.

Because she was
still a juvenile,

she was in solitary confinement.

She was not allowed
to be with anybody.

Eerie sad music

she was put in a situation that
is usually considered torture

for about a year and a half,
until she could be put into

general population.

So...

I understand it was so horrific,

and the staff had never
dealt with a 14-year-old girl.

Stern, you know...

Not-caring.

Imagine, you
know, a 14-year-old.

You know, "I need my mother."

And, uh...

She didn't have a mother.

I lost my family too.

There was days when I would
just cry out of loneliness,

you know, for
another human being.

Well, I used to
sit by my window,

'cause my window
looked out onto our gate,

and I used to think, you know,
"they're gonna come and they're

gonna find out.

You know, they're gonna...

They know that I didn't."

And I'd wait and I'd wait
and I'd watch out the window,

and every time a
car would come in,

I'd just kinda hold my breath.

[Jeff mcarthur vo]
There's a naivet.

I mean, even when
she was in prison,

she still had this
optimism that "someday,

I'll be free."

Caril wanted a new case,
she wanted another trial,

even if there had been a risk
of her having a more severe

sentence.

She wanted to prove
herself innocent.

And there was a
supreme court decision.

I was still in high
school at the time.

[John mcarthur vo] It was
relating to whether caril could

even be tried as an
adult, which she was.

Her hopes were high that "the
supreme court will correct this,

they don't have any choice!"

Eerie tense music

but the supreme court held that
she could be tried as an adult.

Judges, courts are like anybody
else: They are subject to the

public opinion.

[Cell door slams]

Caril was devastated.

Suspenseful synth music

[thunder crashes]

[Murley vo] In the
public consciousness,

it was a sensational
crime at the time,

because you've got all of
these very powerful themes,

presented in the
package of these two kids:

Juvenile delinquency...

Love gone wrong...

Rape and murder.

[Anderson vo] From a
storytelling sense,

it, like, fit pulpy
storytelling from the get-go.

Rebels without a cause going out
and killing people for no reason

and driving across america.

"I'm a nomad with
300 horsepower."

You could maintain your
sanctimony and your piety as

you're reveling in every
detail of the sex and death.

Tense music

[ransick vo] While
Charley was on death row,

he set out to write
his autobiography.

Amazingly, a reporter that was
favorable to him helped him get

a truncated version
printed in parade magazine,

the number-one
magazine in america,

with his own byline.

I mean, it's absurd.

He was insane.

[Charles vo] All the time
the spree was taking place,

I was scared...

Jittery, tired
from loss of sleep.

I was gonna give up.

Caril then threatened out loud
that she wasn't gonna give up,

and that no one else
was gonna make her.

And with a shotgun laying across
her lap with the barrel pointing

directly at me...

And with her fast
talking, she convinced me...

That we didn't have
anything to gain by giving up."

[Ransick vo] Charley
stole caril's narrative,

and parade magazine started
part of the false narrative that

caril was in
cahoots with this guy.

Everybody started to look at
the case the way they wanted and

would take Charley
starkweather's narrative and

concoct their own stories.

It started to seep
into popular culture...

With 'the sadist.'

dramatic horror music

there was actually a
'gunsmoke' episode...

If a fella's smart,
he can live by his wits.

The 'naked city' episode...

[Man vo] What about
the starkweather case?

How many people did they kill?

13, I think.

A nice, round
superstitious number.

[Ransick vo] People were
selling tickets to a certain

narrative, and caril
never got a break.

Well, I'm not
responsible; I'm underage.

Take that cigarette
out of your mouth.

You take it out of my mouth.

Caril was a sort of
innocent-seeming schoolgirl...

Willing to reverse all of the
moral and social codes of her

society.

She was a backstabber...

A narcissist...

Our for herself.

Please, I beg of you,
talk to your boyfriend.

Tell him this is wrong.

Tell him, please!

My god, child, haven't
you any feelings at all?!

Suspenseful music

[woman shrieks]

[Murley vo] The starkweather
case became a mirror reflecting

the darker
aspects of our society,

our humanity.

[Ransick vo] This set of crimes
and these characters stayed in

the national memory...

For better and for worse.

[Wind blowing]

[Woman] You're here with us
now in a home away from home.

What you did is
immaterial to me.

I want you to understand
that I look at you as a girl...

And you're starting a new life.

She had to maintain a
very precarious balance.

She had to...

Walk a tight rope.

She could not identify with the
inmates or she would become an

inmate in spirit, in outlook.

She had to be aloof from the
management or she would incur

the enmity of the inmates.

Dark ethereal music

you know, having gone through
the trauma with starkweather,

I mean, that wold be a
horrifying experience for

anyone.

I mean, he groomed that girl
from the day he met her as to

control her.

So caril, you know, did
not trust too many people,

and she carried
the baggage, yeah,

of that whole crime
into the prison system.

I tried, always, to
speak quietly to caril...

And some way or other, I just
tried to instill into her a

quieter voice, a nicer walk...

And things that I
thought would help her,

because I had no idea, really,
that caril would be with us as

long as she was.

I started in
corrections in York,

Nebraska in '68, and caril
Ann fugate was the gate girl,

so when I went in
for the interview,

caril Ann fugate
opened the gate for me,

[chuckling] Which I had
no idea this was her.

The women worse housedresses.

They could not wear makeup, and
when they spoke to the staff,

they were not to look at us.

[Cell door slams]

But that was the era;
We were very punitive.

I started out on night shift
and Rose through the ranks.

Normally, to become a warden,
you were usually 55 years old,

60.

[Man vo] Today, the reformatory
is run by 36-year-old Jackie

Crawford, the youngest
warden in the United States.

You know, there's a certain
therapeutic value to lockup,

and we have seen women
grow... really grow.

I was young and I was
adventurous and bold... much

bolder than probably
should have been... and,

at that time, made
a lot of changes.

[Man vo] The
reformatory's rules are strict,

but the atmosphere
is generally relaxed.

Jackie Crawford allowed for
a lot more freedoms of the

prisoners.

And one of those programs was to
allow inmates who were on good

behavior to go
see their lawyers.

So caril could go and
spend a whole weekend with my

grandparents or with
my parents in Lincoln.

I was even babysat by
her a couple of times.

And my father took her to the
swimming pool of this apartment

complex that he owned.

We just all went out swimming,
had a good day and all that,

and then caril was
taken back to the prison.

And complained about it.

And Jackie Crawford stopped
allowing her to go to Lincoln,

because people were
so hateful of her.

To this day, you go there
and you bring up caril fugate,

a lot of people will say, "she
should have been right there on

Charley's lap."

The emotion of this whole
thing, it permeated Lincoln.

There's a stigma,
and in corrections,

we're not there to forgive.

[Alarm ringing]

We're not there for atonement.

The women, they have to be
able to look in that mirror,

and they know what they've
done or what they haven't done,

and they have to live
with that; I don't.

[Caril vo] I really wish that
there was something I could do.

I wish there was some magic
word I could say or [sniffles]

A magic phrase...

Or something...

That would... you
know, that could...

Bring these people back.

I'm sorry.

I'm deeply sorry it happened.

And, um...

I swear to almighty god,
I never killed any of them.

Tender ethereal music

I missed a part here.

[Sewing machine tapping]

You know, when
caril was incarcerated,

she was never once cited
for any disciplinary action.

[Jackie vo] Caril was a
very passive kind of person.

She never really challenged
any rule or any direction,

and any time there was any
controversy or any tension in

the institution, she froze.

She froze; I watched her.

Jackie Crawford told me caril
came to her crying one day and

said she wanted to be
locked up in solitary.

And Jackie asked, "why in
the world would you want to do

that?"
[chuckles]

Caril kept saying that other
inmates were trying to incite

her to do something to break the
rules 'cause they knew of her

perfect record, [chuckling]
Which probably very few of them

had.

Caril said, [chuckling]
"I'm afraid I'll blow...

I'll do something."

[Jackie vo] She was tortured.

She was tortured every day.

When people would
come in, you know,

to tour... you know, special
interest groups... the first

thing out of
everyone's mouth: "Oh,

where's caril Ann fugate?

Where's that murderer?"

You know...

She said, "if I hadn't hooked up
with this guy or met this guy,

you know, all of this
wouldn't have happened.

It's really my fault."

She continuously blamed
herself for so much of it.

"Why didn't you run here, or
why didn't you run there when

you had this opportunity
or that opportunity?"

And at no time...

Did I have a
clear-cut opportunity.

No time, without it being
said that someone would die.

[Ward vo] I feel like one of
the reasons why this story is so

powerful and so
resonant is because of her.

She was the story
more than he was,

because without
her, he's just...

A guy walking
around killing people.

There must have been so much
speculation about the fact that

they broke the norms of their
repressive small-town Nebraska,

you know, society and
struck out on their own,

and I can only imagine

how many teenagers
fantasized about being

able to do that... you know,
maybe minus the murder spree.

Hey, where you goin'?!

[Gunshots]

[Murley vo] And 'badlands'
was clearly picking up on this

archetype in 1973.

[Holly] Daddy?

This is Holly.

[Murley vo] In that movie,
malick is narrating the crime

spree, obviously.

Hey.

[Gunshots]

[Murley vo] And the
relationship between these two

kids.

Tense ambient music

but with 'badlands, ' it did much
more than just present a crime

story.

It was questioning not just
why these kids did this but,

like, what does this mean?

Who are we that this happens?

Through the lens of that crime,
malick is trying to understand

the desire to live an image,
rather than a boring reality...

Rather than just, you know, your
boring old "I'm a garbage man."

[Man vo] You know who that
son of a bitch looks like?

I'll kiss your ass if you
don't look like James Dean.

[Murley vo] He's able to
explore ideas about nihilism and

existentialism.

And maybe that's why he wanted
to distance himself from the

actual starkweather events:
Because he was doing something

so different with their story.

Tender ethereal music

when the movie
'badlands" was made,

Terrence malick and Martin sheen
brought the movie to York and

had a private
screening with caril.

[Malick vo] She had made
arrangements to get out on a

weekend leave...

Just so we could
all gather and talk.

You know, at the only cafe
[Chuckling] they have in York,

and he was just so humble and
was so comfortable with caril.

And then, the movie.

[Film reel ticking]

[James mcarthur vo]
When we sat in the theater,

there weren't very many of us.

Everybody was talking...
What was caril's reaction going

to be?

Martin's depiction of
starkweather... his mannerisms

were just exactly
what she remembered.

Where he's by this box car and
he's mumbling to himself going

back and forth...

She says, "I can remember
Charley doing that very thing,"

and that's what
disturbed her about it.

Caril reached out to
Martin, and she said,

"Charley, you've
come back to haunt me."

And to the degree I had a
crazy adolescent phase,

I was at the peak
or depths of that.

And I went to the film
knowing that this was based on

starkweather and fugate.

So it just struck many nerves.

[Kit] Hey!

It was only much
later, actually,

that I realized, "this
is a romanticization."

That film made Charley
starkweather look much better

than Charles starkweather was.

[Kit] Don't worry, now, i'm
gonna get you off these charges.

There's a whole lot of other
boys out there waitin' for

you...

And you're gonna
have a lot of fun.

And at the house that would
have been my grandparents,

the scenario played
out really differently.

[Kit] Hi.

Yes?

[Kit] This your place?

Yes.

[Kit] Anyone else
here besides you two?

No.

[Ward vo] Nobody gets
killed in that house.

Good deal.

Okay, come on, you
two, down in the cellar.

[Ward vo] That movie was
so much less brutal than the

actual murders.

[Gunshots]

Think I got 'em?

I don't know.

Well, I'm not going
down there to look.

[Battisti vo] 'Badlands'
is really a fairytale.

It was nothing like caril's
sojourn with mr starkweather.

Eerie piano music

sissy spacek as
caril went through,

like, a fog.

She's almost
pre-euphoric pot smoker.

[Man vo] You
think he's crazy, huh?

[Holly vo] I don't know.

They claim I've got him wrapped
around my little finger but...

But I never told
him to shoot anybody.

Eerie music

'badlands, ' in many
ways, reflects Charley's

point-of-view, which was he
goes and he does things...

[Gunshot]

And caril kind of goes with it
and never really does anything,

but also never really has
any emotions about anything.

[Holly vo] I didn't feel shame
or feel but just kinda blah,

like when you're sittin' there
and all the water's run out of

the bathtub.

[Ward vo] It wasn't the
truth, but it was all I had.

Memory is very
iffy and fungible,

and in the popular imagination
or certainly the imagination

of Bruce Springsteen...
'Badlands' becomes the story.

Singer Bruce Springsteen has
released an album that may make

caril fugate and Charles
starkweather as well known among

the young as once they were
as well known as they were,

for example, when mr
starkweather was executed.

[Applause]

For this song, I remember I
had been moved by the Terrence

malick film 'badlands' and I
got interested in the story.

You can put
together a lot of detail,

but unless you pull
something up out of yourself,

it's just gonna lay
flat on the page.

You gotta find out what you have
in common with that character no

matter who they are
or what they did.

[Ward vo] When I was in college,

there was an older man.

And I remember him saying,
"oh, you know there's a song

about it."

I didn't, and he said, "you
don't know Bruce Springsteen's

'Nebraska?'"

through the badlands

of Wyoming...

I was more in shock...

Because I realized how
much this story had permeated

popular culture.

You know what I think about?

Sex.

Sex.

Fuckin.'

my mind drives me crazy.

When 'nautral born killers' and
'true romance' and these other

"inspired by" versions of young,
attractive movie star couples

going on killing sprees
came out in the early '90s,

all made by macho baby boomer
dudes... movie directors who

grew up on 'badlands' and
starkweather... they all struck

me as brutal...

Pointless...

You know, they're
true existential heroes.

[Murley vo] The starkweather
story draws viewers no matter

what.

You make every day
feel like kindergarten.

Obviously, 'natural born
killers' is a re-telling of the

intersection with mass media
and the starkweather case.

Mickey and
Mallory stole the show.

[Crowd] We want Mallory!

[Woman] What do you
think of this turnout, Mallory?

I've never had
more fun in my life!

[Murley vo] Those characters
become heroes because they're

beautiful, they're
interesting and charismatic...

And the violence in these movies
is spatter Gore but there's

something really
appealing about it.

It's sort of
lovingly-rendered violence.

Is where it is.

The filmmaker does his best
to reflect society the way he

sees it.

And our society is
culturally in a very bankrupt

and violent mode.

We want to get
close to violence...

But we don't want it
to be real violence,

we don't want it to be too real.

[Laughs]

[Murley vo] It
makes it watchable,

it makes it interesting.

It is the ultimate
expression of freedom.

[Mallory] You
still like me now, Jack?

Gah!

[Gunshot]

[Caril vo] I've
always looked to just,

you know, next year.

Or maybe next year,
or maybe next year,

or next year, or
next year, until,

finally, all these years
have tracked off by themselves.

But I've never, you know,
stood in the mirror and,

you know, looked
and said, you know,

"my goodness, girl, why?"

Because I think
probably, personally,

if I had really...

Said in my mind, "this is it.

You are forever and
ever and ever doomed,

you know, to a penitentiary,"

I don't think
I would have made it.

I really don't.

[Jeff mcarthur vo] Caril
appealed her sentence time after

time after time.

The appeals process went on
for so long that my father,

who is caril's same age,
went through high school,

then through college,
then through law school,

and then he actually
became her appeals attorney.

And the appeals process ended
up going all the way to the us

supreme court again.

Tense ambient music

I think caril had
hoped this was gonna be it,

she was gonna have a break.

But she was pretty
naive, because when you're

institutionalized,
it's kind of a bubble.

You know, you really are not
subjected to other people's

perception.

Perceptions are so important.

When you terrify an
entire state and lock it down,

people don't forget
that very quickly.

Person by her very nature.

She always thought that the
law was meant for her protection

as well as anybody.

The supreme court decided that
the evidence against caril was

so strong that essentially
she was not entitled to a fair

trial.

In a case of this magnitude,
when there was such a huge

outpouring of
prejudice against caril...

The law just breaks down.

That was the end of the appeals;
That would have been 1972.

So that was the end of the road.

[Book slams shut]

[Jackie vo] When
her appeal was denied,

I received a call from the
director of corrections.

He was concerned
how she would react.

Would she be suicidal?

And just about
the time I hang up,

caril's at my door.

And I just allowed her to talk.

"Why won't they believe me?

I never will get out of here.

I will never be able to
prove that I was innocent.

So maybe you should
just put me in the hole.

Just forget about me.

Throw away the key!"

You know, it's one of
those... just being very...

Disenchanted, so to speak.

[Caril vo] I had, you
know, started to feel that

it's just...

It's just too hard to do.

You know, it's really...
It's just too hard to do,

I'm not gonna make it tomorrow.

And, uh, it started to show
my face started to show,

my hair started to show... that
I was going through a difficult

period when I
thought, you know...

"What is the use?

I'm just not gonna make it."

And, uh...

Mrs Crawford, the
superintendent,

she said, "come here, caril."

She said, "I wanna
show you something."

And she took me by the hand,
and she went in and she said,

"look in the mirror."

And I looked in the
mirror and I cried,

because I looked like I
was just going downhill.

I said, "no, no, no,
we're not gonna do that."

And I said, "we're gonna
do something different.

Maybe we're gonna
help build your image."

She said, "well,
what do you mean?"

And I said, "well, you know,
let's see what we can do."

I said, "go put some
makeup on," and I said,

"I always do that
when I feel bad,

caril, so go put
some makeup on."

And I said,
"let's fix your hair."

She had beautiful
hair, beautiful hair.

The next day, I went up and
I got my hair cut and I fixed

myself up, and I really looked,
you know... I looked better,

I felt better, and she gave
me something to make me go on.

[Crawford vo] You
know, a mass murderer,

if that's what they
wanted to portray her as,

we just didn't see that.

And because of her
crime and the visibility,

I felt that she needed
all the help she could get.

[Man] Now, to five and do it.

You want me to do the sound?

[Man] Yeah, the sound.

[Crawford vo] And at that
time, ninette beaver came out.

She was the reporter.

[Crawford vo] Ninette felt like
she wanted to see how much she

had grown or what
had happened to her.

And caril, you know, of
course she met with her,

and ninette was so impressed
with caril and how articulate

she was.

So she asked for
permission to film with caril.

[Man vo] Nbc news presents...

'Growing up in prison.'

[Crawford vo] Here
we go with the media,

the cameras.

You know, this could be an
expos and I think she was a

little bit apprehensive.

"Oh, what if they don't like me?

What if they... "You know.

I said, "caril, go in
there and just be caril,

because that's important...
For people to get to know you.

You know,
sometimes, I've wondered...

Why I was the one that, uh...

Always survived.

And, um...

I don't... it's...

It's just something inside you.

It's really hard...

It's really hard
to put it in words,

but I used to wonder, um...

Why me?

You know, why
was I the only one?

[Crawford vo] They were so
impressed how the community had

opened their arms to caril.

[Man vo] Some of the women from
the reformatory are allowed to

visit York under supervision.

[Laughter and chatter]

Caril fugate had never been
to a bowling alley before her

imprisonment.

She has pushed
her average to 103.

[Laughter and applause]

And caril, she was not as
afraid as she used to be,

and she started seeing a
different side of life.

[Man vo] Caril fugate was
baptized a Roman catholic two

years ago.

On Sunday, she works as a
volunteer at the local church of

the nazarene.

I found out that i'm
a child of god's...

And that no
matter what happens...

No matter what happened...

In the sight of god...

It's over.

Tender ambient music

[man vo] 400 women have been
released since caril fugate

began serving her life sentence.

There is not one person
left... not an inmate,

not a guard... who was
here when she arrived.

She speaks to civic groups and
service clubs throughout the

state without
revealing her identity.

But this day,
everyone knew who she was.

Our philosophy is to
deal with the total woman.

Our program does not deal with
why she is there but what she

does while she is there.

When she comes into the...

[Caril vo] I went
through a period...

Of wishing that I
was someone else.

I would get real upset if
people said my last name,

because it was like
somebody throwing mud.

It hurt.

But, uh, I am caril fugate, and
it doesn't leave a bitter taste

in my mouth.

[Crawford vo] 'Growing up
in prison' was kind of the

launching pad to see her
in a different perspective,

which was very good for her.

It elevated her profile.

[Caril] I received some
from, uh, 13-year-old girls,

14, 18, some of 'em 20.

I want to maybe try and
put across to these...

Teenagers that at this age,
this is the age that I got in

trouble.

I have some
teenage children and, uh...

They have really been
doing some deep thinking.

Very deep in thought.

[Crawford vo] That's when
caril then applied for parole.

Okay.

[Crawford vo] And there
was a lot of controversy.

[Pauline Jensen]
Well, I definitely, uh...

Am opposed to her
release at any time.

I think it would be a
miscarriage of justice

for the ones that, uh...

Were taken for her to be
released to have a good life

from now on.

But you don't forget,
not even a little bit.

[Crawford vo]
There's so much pain.

The trauma that the
entire state experienced.

When I advocated for her parole,
I even received some letters

that were saying "how dare you?"

She was, you know, a mass killer
or a murderer and "how would you

like it if your family
would have been part of it?"

So it was a very chaotic day.

The parole board
hearing was held onsite.

[Shutter clicks]

The media, I mean, it was just.

You know, all over the place.

[Beermann vo] The room was
full of cameras and microphones.

In fact, there were so many
microphones and things on our

desk, we hardly had
room for our materials.

Emotional piano music

our law and the constitution
created a parole board for a

purpose: We determine whether
or not this person is worthy of

forgiveness in some caliber.

[Robert Jensen sr] I don't
think there is any doubt about

her guilt.

In fact, I think probably
she was the instigator of most

of this.

[Man] That just
about says it all, doesn't it?

It does, as far
as I'm concerned.

[Beermann vo] We try not
to second-guess the jury.

They had the benefit
of her testifying...

Him testifying, they
had the case files,

the evidence.

But our feelings
affect our decisions,

and if the witnesses and the
testifier has made a good case,

it can convince us.

[Crawford vo]
During her hearing,

the parole board
asked, "mrs Crawford,

is there something
you'd like to add?"

And I said, "society has
gotten their pound of flesh."

It was like, "how

I probably misspoke, I probably
should have softened it a little

bit, but they wanted her to
admit that she was guilty,

and she says, "I am
not going to do that."

That she had something
to do with... she planned,

schemed, or whatever
with him, because she says,

"you have to be there to
understand how I was traumatized

and what I witnessed."

She said, "I don't ever want
anyone to ever believe that I

was an accomplice with him."

Do you have anything
that you'd like to say?

I feel sorry for the people who,

for 18 years, have hated me
so bad that it has destroyed

their life.

It's destroyed their life, and
it's made their life more of a

prison than mine has been.

And I feel that in a way,
prison is not four walls,

you know, it's
what's inside of you.

[Crawford vo] I was
worried about it because

of the notoriety...

Because of the media and...
Some of this was politicized,

and you either get
paroled or you don't.

But young women who
were not paroled,

sometimes they would regress.

And with caril, having
gone through the trauma

that she did...

I was worried about suicide.

But there is a god...
Let's put it that way.

[Man] By a majority vote...

You are to be paroled through
the former aide program.

[Applause]

[Crawford vo] She was stunned.

Flashing lights and
cameras and and everything...

It was horrific, it really was.

[Male reporter] Caril Ann
fugate has passed through those

gates many times before
on work release and other

community projects.

But it'll be much different
when she leaves June 20th.

That's when she
begins her parole,

when she will ask
society to, in her words,

"accept me for what I am,
not by what you have heard.

You know, you're a bundle of
nerves 'cause you do not want

the media following her
because it will ruin her chance

of having a normal life.

So we were somewhat
secretive and maybe a little bit

deceiving.

Very late at night, [chuckling]
We put caril in the trunk of the

car and drove out, you know,
just like we were going home or

something...

So that we could get her
on an airplane to Michigan.

There was other staff there and
everyone wished her the best.

I gave her a big
hug, and I told her,

I says, "you know,
we're here for you.

Don't let us down."

She says, "i
promise you, I won't."

[Caril vo] I'd like
to just settle down,

get married, have
a couple of kids,

you know, dust the house,
clean the toilets, you know...

Just an ordinary
duppy housewife.

The Nebraska parole board today
wrote a new chapter in one of

the most violent crimes stories
in this country's history.

Under the terms of her parole,
she'll be able to start a new

life in Clinton
county, Michigan.

Eric burns has that report.

So far, only a few people in
Clinton county know where caril

fugate will live,
where she will work,

or if she's even here yet.

Soon, everyone will know.

We now have that report
about caril Ann fugate.

Miss fugate and Charles
starkweather were convicted of a

series of brutal
murders some years ago.

The two of them went on a
killing spree in Nebraska and

Wyoming.

[Man vo] Miss fugate has
always said she's innocent.

With us live at our Lincoln
bureau is Eugene masters,

the assistant chief of police
in Lincoln at the time of the

starkweather killing spree.

And you're still
convinced, then,

that she went as a
willing accomplice?

I know that she did.

We'd have been tickled to death
to give her a lie detector test.

she was done with the past.

But the past was
not done with her.
