So, right now, we're in Cuzco, Peru.

It's super exciting.

There's a huge amount of gold history here.

Ton of gold mining.

I really enjoy mining because it's rewarding,

but the process of it is actually brutal

and you have to be strong.

I do like the Yukon. I love it up there.

Um, it's beautiful country.

And, you know, we've pulled, like,

50, 55,000 ounces out of the ground in the Yukon

in the last 10 years.

But I've seen the writing on the wall

that the ground we have's not gonna last that much longer.

So I'm looking for a really good piece of ground

or an operation to invest in.

And Peru, even with not a huge amount of investment,

it's still the fifth largest-producing gold country in the world,

so, like, there's definitely a lot of gold in the ground

and, hopefully,

we can find some for ourselves.

The main goal of this trip is fairly straightforward...

Look at all that gold.

...to assess as many current mining operations

or pieces of ground where I think there's potential.

If we can go somewhere and do, like, one month of mining,

you know, touch and feel and see

what the ground's like and assess that,

this trip, it's gonna be a success.

With a gold mining history

spanning over 500 years,

Peru has a yearly output

of nearly 100 tons of gold

worth over four billion dollars.

Over eight weeks,

Parker will travel to the nation's biggest gold-producing regions

in search of a piece of virgin ground.

From Cuzco, Parker will take a deep dive

into Peru's most remote jungles

and scale its highest peaks,

prospecting and mining for his next big score.

This trip, we'll be going to places

that are over 15,000 feet in elevation.

We'll be in the middle of the jungle.

Having really good people is so important.

He likes to have a close mate alongside him doing all this stuff.

And then, the other thing is I film it.

So I'm in the thick of it,

spent eight years as a heart surgeon,

in the last two, running a COVID ICU in Lima.

This is a whole new role for me.

COVID was a hard experience,

but also, it gave me ideas of

if I was actually willing to spend the rest of my life in a hospital

knowing that I'm really an outdoor person.

I think I have all the equipment, the training,

and, yes, I'm willing to keep everybody safe there.

That's why I'm going, right?

As a licensed bodyguard...

...as well as being the team medic,

Diego is also in charge of logistics and safety.

I speak the language.

I can get in touch with some mining sites.

So I'm like the link between Parker

and his ambition of finding gold.

What do you expect of the whole journey?

Really, I'm hoping that we can find

some, like, virgin ground.

How exciting would that be

to find some ground that was, like, barely touched?

That would be epic.

And then, I'm really interested in where the Incans were mining

and where all of that gold came from.

So that's a big part of it.

500 years ago, the Incan empire

was one of the largest civilizations in the world.

They believed gold was the sweat of their sun god, Inti,

and used it to line their temples

and adorn their emperors.

The Incans had a huge amount of gold, didn't they?

Huge. Huge.

And I know you guys are looking for

following the Inca gold history.

So I have something to show you guys, a surprise.

Welcome to Pisac.

Standing at 10,000 feet above sea level...

Look at that!

...Pisac is one of the oldest remaining examples

of Incan civilization.

So, that's it up there. Is that where we're going?

So, they used to do gifts

to the sun or to Mother Earth,

It's like a sun dial,

and some historians believe that it was covered in gold.

I mean, that's the definition of gold fever.

God, it would have been so cool to see this back when it was

So, this is an example of the pottery they used to work on.

They were experts. That's gold!

So this is what they'd make with their gold. Yeah.

Just to imagine them making that, like, 500 years ago

is incredible.

The Incans just had such an impressive knowledge of gold

and how to get it out of the ground

and it was so important in their culture.

They obviously knew what they were doing.

So it's really important that we learn from them

and follow their journeys

and, yeah, see where that takes us.

The Incans were amazing.

I've always been fascinated by their history.

For them to have the amount of gold that they did

meant there was a lot of gold down here, right?

Where is it now?

That's what we're here to find out.

And that's, like, where a lot of mining,

The first area Parker's identified

on his hunt for virgin ground

is the jungle around Quince Mil,

located 150 miles away across the Andes.

The modern-day frontier town

is located on the edge of the former Incan empire.

Protected by jungle tribes,

the Incas never penetrated the surrounding rain forest

and a motherlode may still lie hidden in the ground.

Today, small-scale operations

work the dense jungle.

We need to find the people who know the ground.

into the remote jungle surrounding Quince Mil.

to meet a jungle resident

what kinda of thing really spike your interest?

It's pretty basic.

I don't know why it's so difficult for us to find these three things,

but ground that has a decent concentration of gold in it,

we want a lot of volume of that,

that's usually the hard part.

And then, we want some way that

we can be involved in that,

investor, a miner, or advisor, or,

you know some way that

we can help facilitate that gold coming out of the ground.

The Quince Mil Jungles

are filled with untouched pockets of virgin ground,

and Mario has intel

that small operations are looking for outside investment

to help them expand.

washes out in the rivers and creeks

that cut through the jungle.

I mean, this is pretty much how gold got discovered

on Bonanza Creek in the Yukon.

Like, everybody knew that there was a lot of gold in the area

'cause they were finding it, like,

on the sandbars in the Yukon River and stuff like that,

and finally some people just

run up it until they started finding really good gold, stake some claims,

and then the rush was on, and...

The rest is history. - In the--

I think in the year 1900, they found a million ounces.

I mean, for this trip to be a success,

I really wanna find a piece of ground that

either has lots of gold on it or some really big gold on it.

This pan is gonna determine how our trip goes, Parker.

bio diverse places on earth

and home to over 30 species of venomous snakes.

in terms of, like, raw exploration.

In the Peruvian jungle,

Parker is prospecting a small scale claim

owned by Incan descendant, Geronimo Roca.

It seems like there's quite a bit of potential here to make an investment.

This ground has a lot of creeks,

where 90% of the time is where the gold is,

and if you can find promising and really rich ground

in a area that doesn't have the development,

profit margin will be way higher.

With no machines,

Geronimo mines his river claim by hand.

What's he looking for Diego?

He's looking for a piece of wood to use as a... Uh-huh.

...to cross it. Ah.

I don't know exactly what he's trying to do.

Cool.

So what's he doing here, Diego?

Like, is the gold in, in that material?

Um, no. I think he's building a riffle.

Oh, my gosh, check this out.

That is the maddest looking sluice I've ever seen.

When I asked him where did he learn this?

He said, "From the Incas."

How cool is this? We stood there watching somebody

search for gold in the same way that the Incas did.

The Incas developed a method of trapping gold in riverbeds

by stacking rock known as Pirka.

Now, 500 years later,

Geronimo is doing the same thing.

As the water and gold rich material passes over the rocks,

the flow of water is slowed

causing the heavier gold to drop down

and be caught in the small gaps between the rocks.

So it's like the most

rudimentary hydraulic mining...

...there is, basically.

Pretty rad that we see a way of mining

that we haven't seen before, isn't it?

Yeah, exactly.

And this is just stuck, like, in between the rock,

when the rain comes up, if there is gold in this,

rain will wash it down into his--

See, like, he's shuffling it through right now. Uh-huh.

And that will all go into this,

his sluice box.

Otherwise known as... The rock box.

I've never heard of this before.

By moving boulders upstream,

they free the gold baring dirt,

so it can be channeled into the Pirka below.

This is hard work, innit?

Those Incans must have had arms like [bleep] tree trunks.

Oh, I love the history of gold mining.

This is where it all started.

If it wasn't for these kinda techniques,

we wouldn't have been able to develop ours.
