- On the way to the Battle rehearsals,

I'm really excited.

It is going to be strange putting

them up against each other.

Because I obviously love them all individually.

I'm going to have to just make some really tough decisions.

- Laura, you will be battling Ross Clayton.

- This is what I wanted.

I wanted to get to sing with Ross,

and now I'm getting to do it.

- Laura is a phenomenal, phenomenal vocalist.

- I know how the crowd reacts to him.

We're going to have so much fun.

- Team Niall is the team to beat.

- Here they are, finally. - The real thing.

- Hello!

- I paired Laura and Ross because both of them

had country influence,

and I thought it would make for a really good duet.

It took me two seconds to figure out this one.

- You found a way to not make me country,

but not put him in a box of country.

I'm from Dickson, Tennessee.

It really is such a magical place.

It's tucked back in the woods.

It's a little slice of heaven.

I thought after high school, I was going to go to Africa

and be a missionary.

And then that ended up falling through.

That was very challenging for me.

And it led me to very, very, very bad depression.

I had no motivation to do anything.

And I kept gaining weight, a lot of weight.

Two of my best friends--

they helped me crawl out of this.

They worked out with me.

Within, like, seven months, I had lost every pound.

When I think back to those workout sessions,

what I remember is the music.

I don't think about how heavy the weight was.

I don't think about the pain I was experiencing.

Kelly used her only Block on Blake.

It actually threw me for a loop.

And then Niall said...

- I love you already. - "I love you already."

And I remember being like, hold on.

I'm going to go with Niall.

- Ugh. - Yes!

- I did feel really bad for not picking Kelly.

But it's the best decision I've ever made.

- What do you think of the song?

- We heard Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty,

and we were like, oh, my gosh! - Yeah.

This is one of the biggest songs of all time.

- Oh, yeah. - You know it.

- It's not a big deal. We'll do fine.

and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers,

one of the greatest duets of all time.

And I just knew that we would get an incredible performance

out of it.

- I thought-- [laughs] I thought the camera guy

was a rolling trash can.

- I'm like, we're literally filming TV.

Why is there a trashcan three feet from me rolling across?

I'm now thinking I'm an idiot.

- It was so Laura. I don't know.

[laughs]

- 23 seasons of "The Voice",

that's the best thing I've seen.

- This song just matches Laura and I so well,

our voices and our energy.

It was perfect.

It's been about five years since I've performed really.

I gave it up and focused on family.

So I'm going to work my butt off to make everybody proud.

When I hear Tom Petty, I get totally thrown back

to when I was 10 years old.

My dad and I drove across the country from Chicago

to the Grand Canyon on old Route 66.

We listened to Tom Petty probably like 70% of the time.

I didn't have great pitch back then.

So pretty hard to believe, Rossco in the back seat

got four chairs.

- Four chairs!

- And then, obviously, the icing on the cake,

Niall had a lot to say.

- What the--

- I didn't know what was happening.

I didn't know he could do that.

- Please.

- Niall's solo work, his lyricism is phenomenal.

I know I made the right decision.

- Yeah, we picked the right song.

OK, guys, I've got an idea.

Why don't we put you as a duo?

- Maybe you're staring at your Playoff Pass, baby.

There's an option for both of us to go through.

Ross, is there a way of, like, taking back

some of the grit early on?

Like, just, you know, instead of, like,

giving it grit the whole time.

I love the grit that Ross brings to this competition.

He's a soulful rock singer.

I think I'd look at the pitch at the end.

It was very easy to get excited at that key.

In a song like this, we sing the song.

Because we're on a show called "The Voice"

- Getting that one-on-one time with Niall was spectacular.

Ross, you have this voice that really cuts through in, like,

this really raw, like, rock and roll way.

So that this song was great for you.

Laura, you have an intoxicating vibrato.

It's like sweet but pointed.

It's really, really cool. It's a cool gift that you have.

Ross, on this song, I do think that your voice cut

through a little more in a way that in a vocal competition

I think might stand out.

And I just love watching you perform.

And then, Ross, he's like this stoic guy standing up there

just like-- I don't even know what that word means.

It just seems like it fits.

He just delivers this absolutely rock-solid vocal.

I would probably go with Ross on this one, buddy.

What did you think of the Battle?

- Two unbelievable singers singing a great song

and making it their own in some way.

I knew this was going to be the case.

I've shot himself in the foot yet again,

pairing these two together.

Kind of wish I didn't know you now because it

makes these decisions so hard.

I just have to make, like, a gut choice

and an in-the-moment choice to be honest.

I absolutely love.

When I was about in second grade,

I started learning how to play the piano.

By the time I was in high school,

I was playing every bar in my hometown.

I'm from Scranton, Pennsylvania, so--

- OK. Scranton?

- Scranton, Pennsylvania. - Like "The Office"?

- Like "The Office." - That Scranton.

After high school, I moved to Nashville.

I was playing with a band a lot, writing.

And then Chance the Rapper changed my entire life.

- Welcome to "The Voice"!

- I want to have a really big, game-changing career in music.

And with something like "The Voice", that is a possibility.

- You know how I got introduced to this song?

A movie in the early 2000s when I was probably, like,

eight years old called "Moulin Rouge."

- Wow. - Yes!

- [laughs]

- Just seeing that song interpreted in this way,

it just had depth to it.

And I think the first time-- and maybe it was just

because it was my first time hearing it,

it felt like you were very focused on pitch,

doing harmony, and, like, singing together.

But I think just showing who you are and your performance

and just having fun with it also.

How you guys interpret lyrics, the inflections that you guys

choose and the emphasis that you choose when you sing

is why I wanted to have both of you guys on my team.

- * But it's the best that I can do *

When I think of this song, it's about love

at the end of the day.

My girlfriend-- she is definitely

one of my biggest supporters, her and her daughter, Ellie.

I feel like I'm a father figure toward her daughter.

She'll call me like,

"Oh, I just wanted to see what you're doing."

Like, what? [laughs]

What's going on?

Put your mother on the phone.

She definitely appreciates me and anything that I do.

- I'm really hyped on Magnus's control and his choices.

- He just has a distinct sound that's not very

widely accessible right now.

You just smacked the whole thing.

Stylistically, you guys are both different.

The best thing is to just, like, stay in your texture.

"The Voice" is like the world's opportunity

to see you as an artist.

So make sure that, like, you let yourself shine through

in the performance because it's your show.

You know what I mean?

But I'm really excited.

I think it's going to be fire.

I can't wait to see the stage rehearsal.

- Magnus-- he's amazing.

And I don't want to go home.

But Chance said, stay true to your artistry.

So that is something that I will definitely be carrying

with me every single day.

- I can't stress enough how important rehearsal is.

Because it's as much about your stage presence

as it is about your vocal.

Alyssa has a great stage presence

and ability to be a star, I think,

in terms of just how she carries herself on stage.

That was fire, man.

And I saw a huge improvement from Alyssa

from the rehearsal to here.

You've actually gotten better each time I've seen you.

I'm hoping that Magnus shows me some of, like, the soulfulness

that really attracted me to his sound from the Blinds

and from even the rehearsal.

What helps me out a lot when I'm on stage is,

even though I've sang the song so many times,

sometimes that can, you know, work against you.

Kind of taking time to think about who you're singing to

and what the lyrics mean to you is probably the best way

to get the best performance.

Magnus and Alyssa are two very different performers

and singers.

So I'm excited to see what they both do.

But for both of you, I'd concentrate a little bit

on not having vibrato the whole time

because it can get distracting.

But you have really cool voices,

and I would lean a little bit towards Magnus.

I will add, Alyssa, your vibrato, I do feel

like, is the slower, more dominant vibrato of the two.

I don't know how to handle the vibrato thing.

- Now you guys have said it more than I said it.

- It's been lot of times now.

There's a really, like, storyteller

singer-songwriter vibe to the voice.

So when you get a big, bold song,

it was obviously going to lean towards Magnus.

Where I would lean is just towards

just Alyssa's singer-songwriter breaking tone and character.

is meant for this song, and I feel like each time

that you performed it, it got better.

the note about the intentionality

behind the words or the lyrics.

In that area, you smashed it.

But some of your choices-- they kept saying the word vibrato.

It wasn't really all vibrato before.

It was a lot of, like, intentional runs

that I feel like you either switched out

or just stayed straight on.

But still, in terms of performance-wise,

I thought it was really, really--

like, you hyped me up.

Like, I was like, I was like, this is your song.

Like, I like that.

Like, everybody. Like, that was dope.

- You know, this show is a competition on every level,

and that includes the photographs of each other.

And I just got to say, I think

I won the photoshoot contest, I call it.

And this is the best picture we could come up with

of Kelly.

And I remember this because she actually said to me,

"Hey, throw me a Skittle."

I was talking to Chance, and I had just told him

that my cat died.

And this is like he was trying to pretend like

he was concerned, but really doesn't care.

Niall had just said, tell me when you're ready,

and they snapped the picture

just as he was finishing that sentence.

And then we went on to the important picture here,

which is me after a fresh haircut.

I was in heaven right here,

and you can see the lights of heaven,

you know, not only shining from behind my head,

which is these rays, but also shining into my eyes

and out of my eyes.

That's how we do it here at "The Voice."

- Kylee,

you will be battling

Mary Kate Conner.

- Yes! - Yay!

My little baby love.

- Blake paired me with Kylee, which is bittersweet.

- We met when we were here for the Blinds.

We've been through this entire thing hip to hip.

- At first, I was really excited,

and then I was a mess.

- We have to compete against each other,

and that was really sad.

And then we got working on our song.

We were like, this is a match made in heaven.

- Her voice is so gentle.

It's like... a hug from a butterfly.

- Kylee has one of my favorite voices in the entire Earth.

We want this battle to shine so that we're both worthy

of making it in this competition.

the highlight of my life.

- About a year ago, I was visiting

And we, like, went on live--

And I was like, oh my God.

- And now here we are. And--

- It was an eye opening experience

to have three chair turns.

I definitely wasn't expecting it.

I remember talking to Blake.

- There's only one king of "The Voice".

- And then from the heavens,

a giant foam finger falls from the sky.

It was crazy.

I have never had formal training in music.

I was a pre-med student.

The classes were a lot more difficult

than I had anticipated.

I'm so used to getting good grades

and being good at school.

It was very difficult to adjust to that.

So I'd made the jump of leaving college

to try and pursue music.

I feel like I have to pick Blake.

- Yes!

- It's such a privilege to be on his last team.

- You know, I'm always nervous to throw out a current song.

- Uh-huh. - Because some people

will either, like, jump on it,

or they're like, ah.

- * I have this thing where I get older *

- I gave the girls a brand new song called "Anti-Hero"

by Taylor Swift.

- * My afternoon *

- And I think it fits the singer-songwriter thing

that they both want to do.

- * I shouldn't have been left to my own *

- It is really intimidating to be singing "Anti-Hero."

That's like Taylor Swift's number one song

of all time right now.

- * I'll stare directly at the sun but never in a mirror *

- The song talks a lot about insecurities.

I can just relate to that a lot.

I've grown up with really bad anxiety,

especially when it comes to performance and my looks.

I just compare myself to everybody around me

and let that weigh me down.

So this song is so important for me to sing

and be able to share with everyone

because I think that a lot of teenage girls

struggle with the same kinds of things.

- Mary Kate's only 18 years old.

I'm the greatest coach ever.

- Kylee, you know, you guys are switching from your full voice

into your falsetto, and then you started going full voice,

full voice.

If you're going to do it, just be sure you have enough air

to get up there.

Outside of that, I mean, this is just so good.

The harmonies are great. This is exciting.

- From a performance standpoint,

have you thought about how to perform it?

- So, we have fun, like, connecting emotionally.

I think that there's some parts that will end up,

like, flip-flopping places.

That was honestly one of my favorite ones I've seen.

It's not easy to come out

and sing a current song that's huge.

People have been listening to the Taylor version

since it came out.

And then you've made it completely your own.

Kylee, I remember your audition really well,

and it felt like "Fallingwater."

And this is in the same sort of wheelhouse.

It felt like you were very comfortable there.

And Mary Kate, there was a great part where you sung

in unison, and then you split off,

and you were piercing through.

Like, it gave me, like, little goosebumps, to be honest.

Blakey boy, you got one hell of a choice to make here.

- I would probably lean towards Mary Kate

just because of that feeling I got

when she pierced through on the break of the harmony,

to be honest with you.

I think the whole point of this show

is to emphasize your identity through your voice.

If I were you, Blake, I would go with Kylee.

I think Kylee just had a sense of control and a sense of self

that this competition needs and could win

the whole competition for you.
