What is homosexuality, really?

If you mean, "What is a homosexual act," the answer is easy.

It is a sexual act between two persons of the same sex.

BERTIL HANSSON MD

It is harder to define homosexuality as such,

for the lines are blurred.

Everyone is capable of reacting heterosexually and homosexually.

We know, for instance,

that warm friendship can exist between young people during puberty,

between two people of the same sex.

This friendship can attain a sexual character and lead to sexual acts,

without them continuing with homosexual behaviour.

We know that individuals who are isolated, for instance in wartime,

can have homosexual relationships,

but when they return to their normal conditions,

they also revert to their usual sexual behaviour.

It's not a disease, it's not contagious, it requires no medical treatment.

Over the years, there have been many theories about...

STEN HEGELER, PSYCHOLOGIST

...the reasons why people become homosexuals.

Some have guessed that it's hereditary, hormonal,

or due to differences in bodily constitution.

All these theories are incorrect.

There are no biological or physical reasons for homosexuality.

Some have guessed that men who have had their fill of women and grow tired of them

become homosexuals.

Some say that people become homosexual due to seduction. Nonsense.

INGE HEGELER, PSYCHOLOGIST

What does today's science say about the reasons for homosexuality?

We are all born with certain needs and instincts.

Among them is sexual instinct. We are born as sexual beings.

Our actions and our behaviour are the result of learning.

This is true for all human actions, including our sexual acts.

It is true for both heterosexual and homosexual behaviour.

We know that this learning process begins at a very early age.

Exactly which factors

produce a barrier against heterosexual behaviour in some people,

we do not know.

Ove, for almost 20 years, you have been

head of the National League for Sex Equality in Sweden, and still are.

How is life as a homosexual?

OVE AHLSTRÖM, EDITOR

Well, how is life as a heterosexual?

There really is not such a big difference.

The difficult part is often the time before you're aware of your disposition

and you learn to accept it.

This can be very difficult for people living in the provinces,

who lack chances to meet people.

This process could be very long, couldn't it?

It could last for many grievous years,

before you become fully aware.

- Before you... - Before you admit it to yourself.

And perhaps many failed attempts at a heterosexual life.

What about the family, isn't it quite hard for a family

to accept that a family member is homosexual? What about your family?

It's quite hard.

They accepted it. They had to.

There was no alternative. I was a homosexual.

But when I tried to introduce my friend

as a member of the family, they would not hear of it.

I guess contacts with people in general can be difficult?

Very difficult.

And for people in the provinces...

Yes, they often move to the bigger cities.

Of course, there are special meeting places for homosexuals.

In Stockholm, it's around Humlegården

and around Stureplan.

But the meeting-places can just as often be ordinary city settings,

bars, restaurants, cafés and clubs.

A homosexual rendezvous can take place in this manner.

LOVELY

These two, who met in the bar,

are now at a disco.

This disco, where Sven-Bertil and Nalle went,

is an ordinary disco.

But there are also discos exclusively for homosexuals.

We have now moved on.

The homosexual relationship is now well-established,

and the boys are living together in a cosy flat in south Stockholm,

which is no different from any other young couple's home.

It's the same with the homosexual intercourse.

It's not all about sex, as many people think.

The same feelings occur here as in a heterosexual relationship.

Love, tenderness, friendship and hate.

This is just one example of how two people of the same sex can interact.

These are two people who go to bed together

and get up together in the morning.

- Let me give you soap... - What?

That's better.

All right.

What about Swedish legislation on these issues?

There is no law against being homosexual.

Homosexual acts are not prohibited by law.

The existing legislation was created with young people in mind.

And the erroneous seduction theory plays a part in this legislation.

There is a minor age limit,

which is, quite incomprehensibly,

different for sexual acts between people of the opposite sex

and people of the same sex.

Sexual intercourse between heterosexuals is permitted from 15 years of age.

Sexual intercourse between homosexuals is permitted from 18 years of age,

in some cases even 21 years of age.

But this is about to change in Sweden, isn't it?

Yes, I know that you

are working for a change to come about.

I do hope that you will be successful.

What part does Christianity play in this?

The legislation is also based

on the traditional Christian intolerance towards sexual pleasure as such.

There are non-Christian societies

where there is a much more tolerant view on sex than in our Christian society,

and where the view on homosexuality is also

much more tolerant, and this is not a problem.

It's a lot more accepted there.

But how is it that we, in spite of our tolerance,

react with hostility towards those who are different?

All creatures are inherently aggressive,

and this aggression is often directed at those who are different.

They are picked on by everyone.

Man has much inherent aggression,

hence, our negative attitude becomes more marked.

But man has also a highly developed brain...

- We hope. - We hope.

And we must strive to use our brain

and our intelligence

in order to learn to handle our aggression.

We all know how it feels to be lonely.

Some of us are never able to make contact with other people,

regardless of being so-called normal.

We must understand that this feeling of loneliness is aggravated in a homosexual.

It's also much harder for homosexuals to make contact.

There is much agony,

and they often have to depend on casual affairs all their lives.

Many are irritated because homosexuals have their own meeting-places,

but just consider how it would be to live in a small town

with the same number of men and women,

and being the only one who loves his own sex.

Of course, they go to the big towns to meet like-minded people.

This is a club exclusively for homosexuals.

When you think about it, it's strange that other oppressed women

don't go to places where homosexual women meet.

- Long time no see. - What a nice surprise.

For me, too. I often come here, but this is the first time I see you here.

I heard that you often come here.

I see you have company. Hi, I believe we've met before.

Hi, I'm Berit.

Hi. You're here, as usual.

How nice, you left so quickly last time.

Yes, I had to, unfortunately.

- You're even cuter than usual. - That's sweet of you.

I don't know about cuter than usual... You're always cute, though.

You're very kind. It's been a long time.

- We had a good time. - What have you been doing?

- I was in Paris for a week. - I missed you.

- I'm glad to hear it. I missed you, too. - How was Paris?

Lovely. It was spring. Nice.

Did you go to any nice clubs there?

You always do when in Paris.

I went to Elouis and to Carousel

and saw a lot of good striptease.

I can imagine.

I missed you. I didn't think that I would see you again.

You're so sweet.

- Do you want to leave? - Yes.

For me, being a homosexual woman

has not caused any problems with people around me.

But I do know many women who have had difficulties,

especially at work.

Among them is a friend whose career suffered,

and it wasn't because they knew she was homosexual,

but simply because of rumours.

I know that you are bisexual,

and I would like to ask you,

is there any difference in the sexual act,

- the sexual experience? - Of course.

At present, I prefer the homosexual act,

because two women are better at getting a feel of each other,

and intuitively knowing what the other person wants.

They find it easier to be relaxed and open, and play with their sexuality.

There is much talk of this seduction theory,

which is, of course, nonsense.

But if there was anything to it, I would imagine it's more relevant

- in the case of two women. - Exactly.

You can imagine a woman living in an unsatisfactory heterosexual relationship.

If she meets a woman that she's attracted to and who can satisfy her,

then, of course, she will switch from the heterosexual relationship,

which was unsatisfactory, to this.

Maybe we who are wholly heterosexual

are shutting out something good, and should fight for widespread bisexuality.

Yes, I think so,

and there's another thing. These difficult tensions due to sex roles

disappear in a homosexual relationship.

There aren't the same problems and frictions and conflicts.

With this movie, we hope to alleviate anxiety.

There are problems.

In the case of venereal diseases,

it's difficult to disseminate information

without causing fear.

JOHAN WALLIN MD

By venereal diseases, we usually mean gonorrhoea and syphilis.

So they are called venereal diseases,

and in different places around the country,

there are STD Clinics, or Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinics.

Sometimes they're called VD clinics.

This may seem confusing, but it's important to emphasise

that both clinics deal with the same diseases.

- They're the same thing. - Yes.

Gonorrhoea is the most common disease. Syphilis is less common.

Let's talk about syphilis first.

This is uncommon in Sweden, but very frequent in some other countries,

so the risk of contracting this disease is greater when you go abroad.

For the individual who is infected, it can be very serious,

for if it's not treated, severe disease symptoms can occur

20, 30 years later.

Is it curable if you see a doctor?

Nowadays it's very easy to cure using penicillin,

and people who are treated are in no risk of complications later in life.

Gonorrhoea is on the rise right now in Sweden. Why is that?

The rise in gonorrhoea has been dramatic

during the past ten years.

We don't quite know the reason for this.

Doctors' capability to diagnose gonorrhoea

and their capability to treat it is as good as can be.

But...

The reason for the rise is probably that before,

the symptoms of gonorrhoea were quite severe.

There were purulent secretions, and pain was experienced when urinating.

But in later years, we who treat these diseases have found

that the symptoms are less marked now,

the secretions are less severe,

and that in many cases, the patients have not been aware of any symptoms.

You said before that it's difficult to avoid causing fear,

but it's quite frightening that you can suffer from gonorrhoea without symptoms.

Of course it sounds frightening

that it's becoming common that people have gonorrhoea without knowing about it.

Let's say right from the start that those who have not had sexual intercourse

or have only one sexual partner are in no danger of catching gonorrhoea,

provided none of the partners were infected by someone else.

But those who have a lot of casual sexual affairs

run a greater risk of catching gonorrhoea,

and also a gonorrhoea

that yields very little symptoms that would warrant seeing a doctor.

Hence, we must encourage people who are in the danger zone

to see a doctor, just in case.

Is there a way to protect yourself?

If you've caught gonorrhoea,

washing or using salves will not get rid of the infection.

But what about using condoms?

There is no foolproof protection.

But using a condom gives you a good protection,

provided that you use it during the entire sexual act.

And by that, I mean also touching each other's genitals,

not only during the consummation of the intercourse.

This is important to stress.

It would be interesting to see

what happens when you see a doctor for an examination.

I need to see if there's any secretion, and how much.

That's quite a lot, as you see.

When being examined for gonorrhoea, samples are taken from the urethra

for bacteriological examination.

We will take a small sample. There you go.

When examining a woman,

samples are taken from the urethra for microscopic tests.

With women, samples are also taken

from the uterus and anal orifice.

That will be all.

This lab report shows that the patient has gonorrhoea.

Please have a seat,

and I will check this for gonorrhoea.

The doctor can determine with microscopic studies

whether the patient has gonorrhoea.

By dyeing the sample,

you can make the gonococcus

appear as minute particles, not unlike coffee beans.

This is what the doctor sees in his microscope.

The minute black dots are gonococcus.

This sample shows an example of gonorrhoea,

which we will treat today, with the nurse's assistance.

Penicillin is used

for the treatment of gonorrhoea.

This treatment is usually administered with the use of a syringe in the buttocks.

Patients who are allergic to penicillin

are treated with antibiotics of other kinds.

LARS LJUNGBERG, COUNSELLOR

You have been treated for gonorrhoea.

Is this the first time you've had this disease?

- Yes. - All right.

This disease is regulated by a law called the Law of Infectious Disease Control.

Which means that you will have to undergo two check-ups.

It will take about two weeks before you are free of the disease.

The aim of these check-ups is to follow up on the efficiency of the treatment

and ensure that you have totally recovered.

All right.

During the check-up time, you must abstain from having sex.

Do you know when you might have been infected?

About a month ago, I think.

All right.

Were you infected here in Uppsala, do you think?

- Was it here? - Yes.

This is a bacteriological disease

which infects through sexual intercourse.

To be able to check the spread of this disease,

I must ask you about your recent sexual partners,

and they will be

called here for examination.

Okay.

You believe that you were infected about a month ago.

That particular sexual partner,

do you have his name and address?

His name is Torgny Svensson.

Do you have his address?

Västra Ågatan, but I don't know the number.

Does he room there?

- No, he has his own apartment. - Okay.

And you two were together about a month ago?

Have you had any other sexual contacts

- since then? - No.

Before you were with Torgny, was it a long time

- since you'd had sexual contact? - Yes.

- For how long? - A couple of months.

Do you know if Torgny has received treatment?

- I've no idea. - Right.

When you are infected by syphilis,

there may appear a sore on your body about three weeks after the time

of infection, at the point of infection.

This sore usually appears on or close to the genitals.

Here, on the penis, inside the foreskin.

Here, inside the labia.

Samples are taken for microscopic tests.

But a blood test can also show the occurrence

of syphilitic infection.

This lab test was negative.

This patient is not infected with syphilis.

The genitals are no different with regard to bodily hygiene.

It's very important that you keep yourself clean

and uphold normal personal care in that area also.

Many have wondered about the footbaths they find in southern Europe.

They are not footbaths, but bidets,

for washing your genitals and anus.

Only the exterior parts need washing. The vagina is self-cleansing.

But the exterior of the genitals needs to be thoroughly washed.

For men, it is recommended to pull back the foreskin, all the way, if possible.

Wash the glands thoroughly.

- Hi. - Hello.

How do you do?

- Hi, Bengt. - Hi.

Hello.

We have not focused enough on

the problems that disabled people experience in their sexual lives.

- They, too. - Yes.

Let us begin by defining

what we mean by disabled.

HELENA RODHE, PSYCHOTHERAPIST

There are many different kinds of disability.

For instance, malformations in the hips,

legs, arms, the spinal cord.

There are many diseases, polio, for instance.

Wenche's arms are paralysed.

Or as with Bengt, who is blind.

Or mental handicaps.

But there is one thing in common for all these disabilities.

The difficulty to make contact with other people.

What is done today, with blind children, for instance,

to teach them the differences between the sexes?

It's Veronica's turn to check this model.

The rest of you can use your textbooks.

Here's a class of blind pupils.

The object of the lesson is

to teach them about the genitals of the opposite sex.

How do you accomplish that?

At best, they have a plastic model at their disposal,

a plastic model made for sighted people.

...intersected sideways, like this,

and lower down, we find the male genitals

that protrude from the body and that make him different from a woman.

Right here is the penis.

Let's split it in two.

Now let's see what's inside.

Behind the penis there is a pouch of skin

which contains this lump called testicle.

Do you know what its function is?

To secrete sperm.

BENGT LINDKVIST MA

It ought to be just as natural

as learning by feeling in many other cases.

We learn to read with our fingers. We can read a map

that's drawn out in a raised pattern.

And just as we use our other senses in a natural way,

we ought to be able to show, by use of a model,

a man's physiognomy.

- That you can feel. - Yes.

Is this being used?

Hardly anywhere in the world, as far as I know.

When I want to look at a girl,

I'm as curious as the next guy.

I have no means to do this.

If I'm waiting for the bus and am interested in the girl in front of me,

I can't just reach out and touch her with my hands.

And it's much the same here.

I have read a lot of what you have written, Inge and Sten,

and I'm quite curious as to how you look, Inge.

You are welcome to look at me.

I wish that sex education was like this everywhere.

We will now learn the differences between the male body and the female body.

We took Bengt's advice to heart

and arranged sex education for blind people,

as we wish it was carried out everywhere.

You can feel, Jennifer,

that the male has beard growth in his face.

Then bring your hands down to the shoulders,

and feel how the male's shoulders are broader.

The woman's shoulders are more rounded and narrow.

Then bring your hands further down.

Rolf, feel the breasts of the female. Feel how round they are.

You also feel that the nipples

are bigger and more protracted than the male's.

Then pull your hands further down.

The female's waist is narrower than the male's.

That's part of the secondary sex attributes.

Now feel the stomach. You, too, Rolf.

Feel the difference in hair growth.

Then feel further down, the genitals.

Feel how much hair the male has. Feel the penis.

And, you, feel the vagina.

I never knew that female genitals were so small.

I thought they were as big as the male's.

Yes, further in,

we find the labia.

And at the top, we find the clitoris. You can feel it, can't you?

You feel that the foreskin of the penis can be drawn back.

Feel the difference.

Behind the penis, we find a pouch of skin

and the testicles.

- You can feel them. - Yes.

Then bring your hands down to the legs.

You can feel the difference between male and female thighs.

How is it at your institution, Helena?

Do you assist young people in any way? Are they allowed to live together?

No, boys and girls live on separate floors.

Even if they are engaged, they are not allowed to share a room.

But I think it should be allowed, don't you?

Absolutely.

This creates an atmosphere right from the start.

We ought to be more like a family.

What do disabled people think, Maj-Briht?

You have interviewed many of them for this survey.

MAJ-BRIHT BERGSTRÖM-WALAN, SEXOLOGIST

It's encouraging to see that they have

a great belief in their own future when it comes to sex.

They have good hopes of being able to find partners.

And this does not tally with reality.

They do not learn to get to know each other

by being in close proximity to one another.

But still, they believe in their own prospects,

and this is a very positive thing.

Is it unfounded optimism?

Yes, that's true, but I believe that

young people will take charge of this themselves.

Me, too.

But the chances for Wenche and Bengt are not that bad,

since they are such good-looking and nice people,

but for many other disabled people,

the situation is much tougher.

What about spastics,

who have these involuntary movements with their arms and legs,

or facial disfigurations and trouble speaking?

There are people who can't turn over in bed by themselves.

What can you do to assist people with severe disabilities?

It's a severe problem,

and technical means of assistance are needed.

But there hasn't been much progress.

Well, then,

are people without disabilities often tactless towards disabled people?

No, I think we are quite hard.

- Hardened, you mean? - Yes.

Is there an institution anywhere in the world

that addresses these issues?

Yes, there is a community in Holland

where many disabled people live together.

They have also addressed this part of human needs,

the sexual need.

They have personnel who assist

two disabled people to have sex.

You could call them Samaritans.

This is a great help.

But what about you, Bengt?

The first eye contact is very important,

but how do you manage when you are blind

and want to make contact with the opposite sex?

Are you completely blind?

No, relatively few of us are completely blind.

There aren't that many?

No. I can see shadows and shapes.

But you are right, this is a problem for us,

a kind of barricade to cross to make contact.

Eye contact is very important when making contact,

and we can't compete here.

It doesn't show very much that my eyesight is very poor.

I have been able to appear as a sighted person

when making contact,

and also as visually-impaired.

I find that a girl's behaviour differs greatly.

There's a shyness and insecurity, as well as preconceptions about how to behave

towards disabled people that makes it hard to make contact.

You are married to a sighted person?

Yes, she is a sighted person.

And you are engaged to a disabled person?

Yes, a disabled person.

How does your disability affect you when you feel your partner?

Is it difficult since your hands are paralysed?

No...

His hands are my hands and my feet are his feet.

We make each other complete.

- His legs are paralysed? - Yes.

That's fine, thanks.

And now the feet.

Good.

That's good.

Hold up your arms.

Let's rub you down.

And the upper body.

And the feet.

Come to me.

I'm coming over to you.

Welcome.

Have a seat, please.

Welcome.

We are going to talk about transvestites.

Let's begin by defining a transvestite.

The usual definition of a transvestite...

BRUNO KAPLAN MD

...is a person who likes to dress like the opposite sex.

This urge is not constant.

The extent also differs from a single garment to full costume.

This urge is mostly visible in men, right?

As a woman, I am free to wear men's clothes.

I might be a transvestite without knowing?

We know very little about what makes a person a transvestite.

There's a need

in people to resist

traditional sex roles.

To be dressed in a certain way.

The new fashion, unisex, is in line with this.

It's a pity that parents are so troubled by

a boy wearing the same kind of fur coat as a girl.

For this is a very positive development.

Clothes are very much a result

of conventions and such.

One interesting thing here is the fact

that people react much more strongly

to men wearing women's clothes than the other way around.

This would mean

that if unisex were firmly established,

there would be no transvestites.

That's true.

When we discuss transvestites,

we should distinguish between

these and transsexual people.

Transsexuals are people who wish to change sex.

A man who wants to be rid of his male genitals.

He wants female breasts and so on.

But a transvestite does not change sex roles permanently.

He only wants to appear at times

in clothes of the opposite sex.

Another popular misconception is

that transvestites are homosexuals, which is not the case.

No, you might even say

that most male transvestites are married, with children.

All kinds of sexual behaviour are found in ordinary people.

So it's fair to ask

why this should not be the case with transvestites.

Yes, being a transvestite

has nothing to do with your sex life,

or how you have sex.

It has something to do with sex as gender,

to want to be dressed as the other sex.

One interesting question is,

"What is the motivating factor?"

Many transvestites speak of a strong feeling of anguish.

One male transvestite told me

that during a six-week holiday, he was unable to dress as a woman,

which was a great nuisance for him.

But as soon as he got the chance to dress as a woman,

he was relieved of this anguish.

Yes. Transvestites often say that the day after

they had the chance to dress as the opposite sex,

they feel much better at work.

They feel a surge of energy.

This also goes for highly-educated people.

There are highly-educated people who are transvestites?

Yes, indeed.

What about Swedish legislation on this issue?

This is not prohibited by any law.

A transvestite in Sweden can experience problems

concerning his identity,

so transvestites are supplied with a certificate

which states that he has this persuasion.

There have been times when

male transvestites have been stopped in a traffic control,

and many transvestites have testified

that the police officers showed great understanding

and consideration in these cases, which is gratifying.

But I would not say that the general public

is free from prejudice

concerning this deviation, or whatever it is we should call it.

There's a great need for information.

There's a great lack of knowledge and understanding in this area.

How many transvestites are there in Sweden?

There are thousands of transvestites in varying degrees.

There's even an organisation for transvestites in Sweden.

THE GREATEST VARIETY OF GERMAN PORNOGRAPHIC BOOKS IN SCANDINAVIA

We often hear today that we are being invaded

by sex and pornography.

But is it really true that we are living in an over-sexualised world?

TOMMY HEDLUND BA

Man has always taken an interest in erotic tales,

and other times in history

have been a lot more sexualised than our age and our society.

Sexuality was not seen then as something shameful.

Take, for instance, the temples in India

and their adornments that show sexual positions and group sex.

But why is this regarded as pornography and something dirty?

Christianity, as opposed to some other religions,

has regarded sexual pleasure as something impure.

My impression is that Christianity

considers us women to be impure.

But that's not quite the issue here.

What's interesting is the question, "ls pornography dangerous?"

Of course it's not dangerous. It's healthy.

Of course you, as a porn producer, would think so,

and I do, too.

I think porn is a lot better

than seeing a doctor to get help to make yourself feel better.

I think it's more fun, better and possibly less costly.

But, Tommy, what do you think will happen

if porn is legalised in Sweden?

I think it would be a very positive thing.

Really, only the porn producers

are unhappy about that?

CURTH H-SON NILSSON, EDITOR

That's right. My Danish colleagues say that sales have gone down.

But what do you think?

In Denmark, there is better porn

and it is less expensive, so consequently, there are a lot of tourists.

And there are fewer sex crimes committed, right?

Yes, that's right. The decrease is 20 to 30%.

But is there nothing about porn

that's dangerous and harmful? As a young girl, I remember

feeling damaged

after reading a porn magazine

that someone left out.

I felt unable to compete with these things.

I was unable to do it as many times as they said.

Of course, the insufficient sex education

that is still ongoing results in many people not seeing

that what they read is really fairy tales.

Let's go through the magazine

and see where we were successful...

Sexual fairy tales. Well...

Let's listen in at an editorial meeting

at one of the big "fairy tale" publishers.

Everything could be better.

We have already talked about the cover, it's okay.

Here's the photo.

The point of interest is that the girl is black and the boy is white,

which has a big psycho-sexual effect.

Gunnel, what do you think about using a coloured girl?

It's important to show coloured and white people together.

Yes, it shows that we are not discriminating.

She should have removed her shoes.

Yes, you always see this kind of thing afterwards.

But as I just said, it's better than seeing

the sole of a dirty foot.

Here's the funny one, with Inger.

The text is a bit simple-minded,

it's like she's writing an essay,

relating her name and where she lives.

Maybe we should stress the general things.

There's a state of opposites here.

Here, we see a beautiful girl out in the lovely nature.

Turn the page, what do you find?

The same girl, lovely,

beautiful hair, clean, gorgeous, lying there.

I think this picture of the girl and the soldier is nicely composed.

And the passing car lends a sense of movement to the picture.

Yes, this is really good.

All this under the hood of the car, while she's leaning there.

The centrefold.

One of the first to be successful

with regard to picture quality.

Personally, I would like a bit more colour here and some clothes.

There's too much skin.

Well, we don't need to comment on this picture too much.

We all know it's a great success.

And we're also pleased with it.

One of our better efforts.

And here's Josephine, 18 years old.

We know that this is also a success.

From all the comments and letters we received.

I think there's something special about this kind of girl,

with her long, blonde hair, looking pure and fresh.

Let's have a look behind the scenes,

at this fairy-tale-type big industry

that is the Scandinavian porn industry.

That's good, yes.

Let's go to the scene.

You lie there, and you lie close to him.

And you lie over there.

Lie close together.

Let's change positions.

You're supposed to have fun.

Move your leg down a bit.

Great action there.

Good, David.

David, please remember that this is porn. Porn!

That's good. We'll take a close shot.

Use your tongues more. That's it.

Spread your legs, Ellie.

Arch your back and throw your head up.

Arch your back!

Don't be afraid to touch him!

Push your breasts out. Look happy.

Ellie, just be yourself.

Try it on your side.

That's it, hold on to him. And lift your leg!

Hold him hard.

This is great.

Hold her further down, grip her breast.

Great.

Let's see what the porn shops have to offer.

There's been a porn boom in Copenhagen after the legalisation of porn.

We can also visit a sex club and see a live show.

And now, ladies and gentlemen,

we'll have a demonstration of intimate massage.

Everyone that would like a massage is welcome.

What about you, would you like a massage?

Mine's so little.

It won't hurt. I can hold your hand.

That's fine. I'm okay.

A brave gentleman.

MIRIAM ISRAEL, CHILD PSYCHOLOGIST

A little girl came home from the playground

and told her dad

that she had seen a flasher in the park.

Her father asked what had happened,

and the girl said

that the other kids ran over to look

when the man unzipped his trousers.

Her father asked, "But what did you do?"

She said, "I didn't have to. I've seen you already."

ANNA BERGGREN MD

As a parent, you are often unsure as to how you would react in this situation,

if your children came home and told you about something like this.

This story makes you stop and think.

What's important is

keeping calm and knowing how to react,

so as not to make a bad thing worse.

As a parent, you often use too much energy

being afraid and worried

that something sexually harmful should happen to your children.

Statistically, it's very rare that these incidents physically harm children.

The odds are about the same

as something dropping from the sky and hitting you on the head.

You might as well worry about that.

But the fact is that we're very afraid of these things,

and we often react unwisely.

I remember, as a five-year-old girl,

playing doctor with another girl, examining each other.

It was totally innocent, but my mother came home once and was very angry.

And I was not allowed to play with my friend again.

And I was afraid, too afraid.

But sexual games are very normal.

Yes, all children play some form of sexual games.

It's in no way harmful.

And neither is masturbation, which occurs at all ages.

I would even say

that this might be a positive thing,

children who masturbate, big or small.

Every kid sometimes feels lonely or sad.

And I think it's great that nature has provided, within your own body,

means to be comforted and to experience pleasure

by playing with your genitals.

It makes you feel happy and relaxed.

Speaking of pleasure,

this is often left out

of sex education for kids.

Yes, we provide sex education

as if sex were just a matter of procreation.

We have not taught them enough

that sex is about pleasure,

friendship, closeness and all that.

Our children are never allowed to see.

With animals, and in some other societies,

the young ones get to see the act of procreation.

But in our society, children don't get to see anything,

so we should really at least tell them about it

and show them pictures.

But it's not only a matter of teaching them about this.

Reality forces us into a situation

where we can't enjoy intimate moments

without our children being in the house, and they may come in at any moment,

if, perhaps, there's only one bedroom. Then what do we do?

They need to learn about what this is.

Yes, they need to learn about this beforehand.

I recall the story about a girl, about nine years old,

who entered the room just as her mother had an orgasm.

This frightened her very much,

because her parents had never told her

that the noises people make while having sex may sound a bit intense,

so she didn't know this.

Would you say that it's actually good for children to see sexual intercourse?

- Would you say that? - No, I wouldn't.

We may all agree on one thing,

that it's good for children to see their parents naked.

In our ordinary family life, there are plenty of occasions for this

that feel natural for both parents and children.

One consequence of our not showing our children how it's done

may be that they won't believe that we can have a sexual life

after 30 or 35 years of age.

Yes, and only lately

have we begun to address the fact

that we have sexual needs for much longer than previously admitted,

even when we are 60 or 70 years old.

And we must consider that when we grow older

and are less active than when we were young,

and that we tire more easily,

we can use more comfortable positions when having sex,

and also devices, like a vibrator.

It's also a fact that when people get older,

many of them are left alone,

and have no partner.

This applies to what we said before,

that masturbation is an option, if we choose to use it.

This is another positive thing about masturbation.

And I would like to stress

that elderly people should not feel forced

to continue to have an active sex life.

But if you do, there are methods

and devices available for those who need them.

There's a purpose to the images in this film,

and in conclusion, we focus on two things.

One is tolerance for everything human,

every variation, every form, every dialect of the language of love.

The other thing is that "tenderness" is the most important word in this language.
