I never went to college
or anything like that.

of mechanical engineering

for more than 30 years,

of the famous lancia stratos.

the only card that was designed
as a rally car,

and it won

the world rally championship
in '74, '75, and '76,

one of the most
memorable cars ever made.

in the front,

The quarter panel on this car
is quite rotten.

You can square this one off,

sort of looks like
you're working in

the '60s and '70s, I guess.

a honeycomb tail for it.

the last couple of builds.

Had a bit of a health issue

and I'm still not feeling
the best,

but I'm back
and I'm gonna do what I can.

So, this is what
we're gonna do.

We're gonna build
a futuristic glass car

out of a pinto.

When's the last time you seen
a pinto?

What year of a thing
are we starting with?

'71.
- '71.

It's a fine looking
automobile.

And they
were only meant to go 'til '81?

pinto is never gonna be

anybody's
first choice as a hot rod.

This is what I want the car
to look like.

The back comes down
like this.

We're gonna take
some square tubes

and run across the back
like that

and bring it back down
into the taillight.

We're gonna close that off
and make it bigger.

The front end,
- I want to bring it farther ahead

and make it pointier.

We're gonna make
the roof glass.

I, like, put a piece of glass
all along the whole top of it.

Like, and the side doors,

as I say,
- we're gonna change the door.

I want to put --
that's glass.

I want to put glass in the doors
so you can see right through.

It's gonna be expensive
because a sheet of metal is $70

and a sheet of
plexiglas is $3.68.

Well, that car's only...

What's that stuff we use --
three sheets.

It'll be four sheets.

The doors --
- we want to make them come up.

I was thinking about taking
a storage container

and cutting --

we had a bunch of
- storage containers out there.

We got all that metal
out there.

As you cut that, we can cut that
in, say, inch strips.

We can make that shape.
Make a sheet of honeycomb.

We are not going to use
the engines in it.

We're gonna make it --
if it's gonna look like this,

for the gull-wing doors on it --
[ imitates engine running ]

wants to be cool.

Find a nice little
small block for it.

Send it silly.

We have four weeks
for this build.

We've cut everything out of it.

I would like to turn this pinto

I just feel like my skills

There's a lot of work

in the inner fenders?

The inner offenders
are all gone.

When there's so much rust
like that,

it's just hard
to take it all in.

She's a rough one.

We've cut everything out of it.

That's what the problem is.

The more we cut out,
the more we got to fabricate,

and we'll fabricate as we go.

The challenge is going to be
am I gonna be able

to fabricate fast enough
to keep up?

Jolene: There is consequences
to starting

with something so crappy.

It seems like we're definitely

gonna push the boundary
of the time frame.

You're cutting structure
out of the car,

so that means
when you go back into it,

that you have to put
the structure back in.

This car was a unibody,
but we have so much out of it,

it does not have
any integrity anymore.

We're gonna have to make
our own chassis

to give it some stability.

As we put the frame
from the front to the back,

what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna
to run a piece of 2-inch

square tubing
across the back,

and bring the frame
and connect it to that.

Really make it strong.

There. She's on her own.
She's on her own chassis.

That back end
on there.

How do I want that back
end look, you know?

I'm having a hard time
figuring out how I'm gonna

build the back of the car
to get it connected to the roof.

Should have ran it
all the way down, maybe.

you know, hold everything.

I couldn't just walk to the body
panel of the old car.

All that thin tin,
it would fall off, you know?

I'm using a 16-gauge.

They don't use 16-gauge
in cars anymore, I don't think.

16 gauge is thicker metal
than we usually use.

We usually use 18.

This thing's looking like she's
going. She's gonna take off.

So, dad took off.
He's got the roof clamped in,

so I'm gonna weld it up
and surprise him.

a little bit more on the engine.

We've spent $3,000 on it,

but we're gonna save
so many hours of time,

and that time is gonna be
put on all of the, you know,

the fabrication that's going on
in the car right now.

We're putting the v8 in
this car. 302.

It's gonna be an awesome
little beast.

Chad: Got ahold of it?
- Yeah.

I think this is the
perfect engine for our build.

Should be a donut machine,
that's for sure.

-Can you let down a little?
-Yep.

Chad: The engine has to go back
quite a ways

to be over top of
them wheels, right?

And putting that engine
back there,

that's where it should be

so it handles good and stops
good and all that sort of stuff.

It's almost like
a mid-engine car.

It makes
it ride better.

They won't tip and dive,
you know?

The engine will be back

and it'll give it
a nice center of gravity.

This might not fit.

a small block forward in a pinto

'cause they do not fit.

This tool --
we just picked this up today.

Jolene went and
picked it up for me.

It's had a little neglect.

When I met gene winfield
to do a course,

this is the very first tool
he had there

to show us how to work metal.

This was his workstation.

Gene winfield
is a custom car builder

and he's a legend in my mind.

There it is right there.

That was the very first station
I've ever seen.

There's so many things
on that little table

that can be done. Like, that
little table built you a car.

Oh, [bleep],
[bleep].

That's gonna be cut out.

Chad: I thought maybe
that 302 would be fairly easy

to get back in the firewall.

Now I find out that we got
to rip the firewall out.

As we have to do this,
we're falling even

farther behind because we have
to fabricate even more.

But that's what's happening.
That's what's going on.

The engine has got
to go back so far

that I have to
make a firewall.

And that's what
- we build custom cars for,

'cause we make stuff.

Alex: Everything
we touch on this car,

it's got to be fabricated.

This is probably
the most fabrication

we've done in the shop.

It would've been easier to build
a car right from scratch.

It's a lot of work.

I'm getting full of anxiety,
you know?

We're supposed
to have this car done

in a short amount of time.

And as alex is cutting
into the firewall,

it's just getting deeper and
deeper and deeper and deeper.

Now we've just got to beat out.
It's going. No more firewall.

We have relocated the engine
where it should be

and we've got the engine
right over top of the front end

and back a little bit.

Alex: This is gonna be
the new firewall.

I made it all. Made the template
all in one piece.

Weld up in the sides,
weld up top,

weld up in the square.

I'm just getting her
so she fits, okay?

Chad: That's what
we like to see.

Good construction, the way
that's constructed there now

is a lot stronger
than it was.

compromise what we're doing,

what we're going for,

The rear end for the pinto,
when I took the cover off,

it probably had about
two and a half,

three gallons of water.

So we got a totally different
rear end for this build.

This rear end is very wide.

Once the wheels are on it,
it makes it wider.

You know, I'm kind of worried
it might not fit.

Outside diameter

of the tire
- on the rear end on the wheels

is 68.42.

What do we got? 65?
- Yeah.

[bleep]

so, the tires are gonna
be too wide.

A lot of money to spend
on these rims and tires,

and, you know, we got no time
to send them back.

Chad: So we want to shorten
that rear end, eh?

Can we cut a little bit
of them, or

got enough teeth
- that you can cut them, or...

You can do
two inches.

Take two inches off?

You can
on one side.

What I'm gonna do
is cut this housing off

and take an inch
and a half off this side.

So by doing that, that short
axle will fit perfectly.

-Harder?
-Yeah.

We're almost there.

It's gonna probably
start going harder here

dial it in.

One shortened axle

with new bearings and seals.

not gonna fit in there.

This has to be cut up,

and that has to be cut up
and pull it out.

the quarter panels

to make it fit.

Them quarter panels
have to be cut

and brang it.

It's a backward step
on a big build is what it is.

If I say that I'm gonna
deliver something,

I have to deliver.

who I say I am.

make performance cars,

If it was easy
- everybody would be doing it.
