Previously on S.W.A.T... Hey! LAPD! Stop!
Luca got some bad news today.
His SWAT days are over.
One thing's for certain,
this squad is never gonna be the same.
So you must be staffing up 20-Squad.
I really want to find the right mix of people.
You're trying to capture
our old 20-Squad magic, aren't you?
That's the idea.
20-Squad's got have
the right combination of personalities
and skill sets, any team I lea.
I want to make sure it's a cut above.
If we're gonna rebuild this department,
I need my best squad,
and you get carte blanche
on the pick for sixth slot.
Whoever you want.
Ah, there's Lucy.
Lucy in the sky with diamonds.
Hi, Coach.
There we go.
Hold on, kids.
Are they gonna move?
Yeah, I'm sure they will in just a minute.
Come on.
What in the world?
- Let me on. - Like hell.
Okay. Okay. All right. All right.
What do you want?
Move. Move!
Quiet! Listen.
Everybody will get off this bus,
and you will get into that truck.
If you obey, you will not get hurt.
Phones go into that bag.
You, too, girl.
It-It's okay, kids.
Just-just do what he says. Everything's gonna be fine.
LAPD! Stop!
What are these kids, track stars?
Stamina beats speed.
They're splitting up!
You want the fast one or the faster one?
- I'll take the duffel! - Yeah, you would.
Alfaro, suspect headed your way!
LAPD!
Back up!
Drop the weapon and let him go.
- Don't exacerbate the situation. - Don't what?
Don't make it harder for yourself.
Oh, wow, we got a real smart guy.
You want to show him your diploma, Deac?
What kind of morons rob a pawnshop
right next to the SWAT training facility?
Really fast ones, apparently.
Hey! Stop!
He said stop!
Move, move, move!
Oh, you better stop!
Stop!
Ears don't work?
- Nice catch, Gamble. - You want to do the honors?
No way. You bag 'em, you tag 'em.
Forgot how much I love Venice.
LAPD! Stop!
- Go, go. - Move, move, move, move, move!
Move, move, move!
Get out of the way!
LAPD!
- Move! Out of the way! Move! - Move! Out of the way! Move!
You see him?
No. I lost him.
All right, keep moving.
Tan.
Hey, I need you to come out of there
with your hands in the air.
We know you're in there.
You got nowhere to go.
Hey, hey. LAPD.
Hondo, your way!
Chill out.
You got I.D. on you? Give it to me.
Ty Wallace. 16 years old.
East Venice High student I.D. You should be in class, man.
What's this?
You steal that from the pawnshop?
Lot of a hassle for a cheap-ass-looking ring.
I was trying to get it to my mom.
It's her wedding ring.
Her loser boyfriend stole all her jewelry and pawned it off.
I went in yesterday to buy the ring,
but the owner raised the price on me.
Sounds like something Amir would do.
You know that bastard?
Yeah, we know him, man.
SWAT uses the place next door to run drills.
Should've done your research
before you decided to knock the place off.
I wasn't going in there to rob it.
I brought cash.
My buddies came with to back me up.
Things got out of hand.
I just wanted my mom's ring.
My dad died when I was a baby, and that ring...
That ring's the last thing she has left of him.
It's her damn ring, man.
Where's your mom work?
Sh-She's a cook at the restaurant over there.
Let's go.
What's going on?
The kid took his mom's ring from the pawnshop.
Said he was trying to get it to her
- before we caught him. - And you're gonna let him give it back to her?
You know, Amir won't be happy.
You know what? Let me handle Amir.
If the ring was stolen like the kid says,
Amir has no claim to it.
Hey, kid.
Your day just got a little better, man.
Here.
Give your mama her bling back.
Thank you. Yeah.
So, who wants to be the one to break that up?
How about the new girl?
Today's supposed to be my orientation.
So go get orientated.
What do you want, a pamphlet?
Go ahead, Gamble.
You're up.
Meet you back at the gym.
All right.
Time to go, buddy.
Well, they loved us,
now they hate us.
Hey, you can't please everyone.
- Can't please anyone. - Hey, you think that'll go viral?
It's all we need.
Even if it does, so what? It's a roller coaster.
- Enjoy the ride. - Wouldn't have it any other way.
School bus on its morning route was found empty.
Ten students and the driver are missing.
That's gonna make a lot of waves.
Let's get to HQ.
What'd the mayor's office say?
They want all hands on deck. FBI, SWAT...
Metro's scouring the north valley near the bus.
How are there no eyewitnesses?
Still a mystery.
The bus was headed to Granada Hills Junior High.
Picked up a seventh grade girl
at the corner of Sierra and Clark.
The kids at the next stop were just left waiting.
Everyone on that bus disappeared.
Detectives find anything useful at the crime scene?
Oh, they pushed back when I even called it a crime scene.
Well, of course, it is.
What do they think, it's your first day?
Please.
Speaking of first days, how'd Gamble do out there?
She's good. Good. She's quick on her feet.
She seems sharp, too.
I know Hondo's always thought highly of her.
I can see why.
Mm, mm.
Did you expect me to have a different take on her?
No. Course not.
Her Oakland SWAT commander said she was a standout.
So what's the issue?
No issue.
All right, I'll see you soon.
Everything okay?
I just got a call from an old friend of mine,
- lives in Granada Hills. - Don't tell me
you know one of the missing kids on that bus.
Not the kid, sir. The driver.
He was my high school football coach. Howie Kincaid.
That was his wife Judy on the phone.
She said she didn't know what to do
when she saw the news, so she just started driving.
I asked her to come here to speak to us.
All right.
Hey.
You think getting sand out of your shoes is hard...
You know what? Actually, now that you're here,
I'm not the newest member of the team anymore, which means
this grunt work's now yours, Gamble.
I'll grab my toothbrush. There's a visitor at the front
who wants to speak to a member of the team.
Since it's my first day, I thought I should talk to you.
I'm Officer Alfaro.
This is Officer Gamble.
I am Zora.
How can we help you, Zora?
My bubu...
He has fruit cart near the beach.
You and your friends,
- you saved his life today. - Your bubu.
- Is he doing all right? - Much better now, thank you.
I want you to have these.
Sheqerpare.
You're Albanian?
From Berat. You know it?
I'm familiar, yeah.
My grandmother, she's from Krujeë.
You are Albanian, too.
I'm not surprised. So handsome.
Only half.
On my mother's side.
- What is your name? - Miguel.
- After my dad. - In Albania,
it would be Miko.
Sweet baby Miko.
Thank you.
Thank you all so much.
Aw.
Sweet baby Miko.
Just put these in the kitchen for whoever wants them.
The bus was found here, not far from
where the last kid, Lucy Ambrose,
was picked up.
Well, that's a pretty remote area.
Bus route cuts through
Sunshine Canyon to get to the school.
It's a dead zone for cell reception.
Well, makes sense if it was a coordinated kidnapping.
Commander, if that's the case, why these students?
Most of the parents are just making ends meet.
They aren't people who can pay some big ransom.
Yeah, we still can't even prove
that there even was an abduction.
It was definitely an abduction.
A rancher called into the tip line.
He saw masked men near the bus with weapons.
He thinks they might have driven off in a blue box truck.
Well, why didn't he report it earlier?
He says he figured it was a film crew.
Apparently, there's a movie ranch just down the road.
Once he got home, he saw the news.
Check it out.
Demand from the kidnappers.
A statement released exclusively to KMZR,
the kidnappers claim to be part of an unnamed organization
demanding $400 million in public funding
be redirected toward fixing L.A.'s homeless crisis.
The statement reads,
"Los Angeles, you have turned a blind eye
"to the suffering on your doorstep for too long.
"The mayor has 12 hours to do what's right
"or your children will vanish into the abyss.
None of you are untouchable. No child is safe."
Find out how the hell the statement
came into that news station's possession. On it.
And keep combing through the kids and their families.
Enemies, vendettas... get me anything
that seems somewhat useful.
Have a seat. Thank you.
Mrs. Kincaid,
when's the last time you spoke to your husband?
Early this morning,
before he left for the school bus depot.
Every morning, after he gets the kids to school,
he calls me, 9:10 on the dot.
When he hadn't called by 9:20,
I knew something had happened. I could just feel it.
Okay, I am really sorry, Judy,
but you know we're gonna do everything we can
to find Howie and the kids.
We moved to Granada Hills
to get away from the crime in the city.
I just can't believe this happened.
When did you relocate?
Three years ago,
after Howie's first heart attack.
38 years coaching D1 high school football
- took a toll. - Oh, God.
Howie doesn't even have his medicine.
Hey, hey, Howie is strong, Judy. You know that.
What do you think he'd be telling you right now?
He'd be telling me to suck it up.
That's right.
- I'm trying, Hondo. - Has your husband
mentioned anything out of the ordinary
in the last few days? Anything unusual at all?
- What do you mean? - Well, it's not unheard of
for perpetrators to do a trial run.
Test the waters.
No, not that I can remember.
What kind of monsters
would want to do something like this
to a bunch of kids and an old man?
- We're trying to find out. - Hondo,
you lived with us long enough to know
he'd do anything
- to protect those kids. - I know.
He'd put his life
on the line without a second thought.
You mentioned his first heart attack.
So, he had another?
This past summer.
It was minor, so he kept it quiet.
Didn't want anyone worrying.
I got him one of those med alert bracelets.
Do you have any idea if he's wearing it?
Uh, I'm not sure.
Get out of the truck.
Hurry! Now! Let's go! Out of the truck!
Okay. Come on. Here we go.
Where are we?
Stop talking.
Get there. Let's go. Let's go.
- Go! Go! - It's okay.
It's all right. It's okay. It's okay. Come on. Go!
- Come on. Come on. - Come on!
Go.
Hey, come on, man.
How are we supposed to see in there?
There are flashlights inside. Go!
Is that a phone?
There's no signal out here.
Hey, hey. Come on, man. These are just kids.
What, you want some?
In!
I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
I won't say it again. Understood?
- Get up. - Okay.
In, let's go.
Let's go. No talk.
- Let's go! - It's okay.
- Come on. It's okay. - Go.
It's okay.
It's all right.
Yeah.
Get rid of the truck.
The ravine we discussed.
It's how the kidnappers covered their tracks
when they emailed their demand to the news station.
By pinballing the message all over the world.
Like a digital hot potato.
No way to track the point of origin.
The bus driver, Kincaid,
his medical alert bracelet is active.
Just came online.
He's moving down Saddle Ridge Highway.
Let's roll.
FBI and Metro are en route.
But if we're forced to engage before we have cover,
try to avoid the back of the truck.
Kids may be inside.
Cover fire, right side!
All right, Deacon, give me two. We're moving in.
Powell, we need cover. Tan, you guys
tack left. Move now.
Suspect is on top of the cab.
I lost him.
Try to get a visual.
Deacon, go.
Suspect's on top of the truck.
He fires again, you keep him engaged.
Then we move in.
24-David. I'm ready for him.
Ready when you are, Deac.
Set.
Suspect down.
No kids. Truck's empty.
Get this. The suspect's tattoo
is the emblem of the French Foreign Legion.
So, what? These guys are French military?
It's a safe bet.
What the hell do they want
with these kids?
Denis Girard. Ex-French Foreign Legion.
Landed in L.A. six days ago on a Swiss passport,
traveled under an alias
with three other men.
Did Homeland confirm they're all Legionnaires?
Used to be. Deserted a few years ago,
been on the run since.
French government said they disappeared
during a recon mission in Yemen.
And why'd they go AWOL?
To chase a better paycheck, maybe?
They hooked up with some overthrown Yemeni prince
who paid them to do his dirty work.
True mercenaries.
This was taken last year. That's Gus Dupont.
He's one of our suspects.
He's also their commanding officer.
The prince had enemies. Dupont and his men
abducted their family members, children,
elderly parents, tortured them
on live feeds to extort ransoms.
Never released 'em, though. They were all found dead.
What does a Yemeni prince want
with ten schoolkids in L.A.?
And why demand money
to fix L.A.'s homeless problem?
Nah, that's just a cover.
Something else is going on here.
These kids may not have much time left.
Look closer into the family of the missing students.
They're not rich,
so what else can they offer?
Hondo, hold up.
Does he know about Gamble?
No, not yet. No one does.
Ink's not dry, you know.
- What's that mean? - Well, we can still find
someone else for 20-Squad,
someone who doesn't come from a family of felons
and someone whose father - didn't kill a cop. - Commander,
you gonna blame her for what her father did?
Oh, I don't blame her, Hondo, but she brings
a lot of baggage, her fault or not.
Gamble is the right person for this job.
I know her. I trust her.
You said I had carte blanche to pick my team.
I did,
but I didn't think you'd pick her.
Officer Gamble.
Sir.
HR said
you needed these - by end of the day. - Oh, yeah, thank you.
Sorry for interrupting.
That's no problem. Thank you.
Don't sweat it, Hondo.
I'll talk to her later,
do some damage control.
Nah, I'd prefer if you let me
talk to her first... sir.
Hey, baby Miko.
You got to admit, it's kind of endearing.
Big, tough SWAT officer by day,
little baby Miko by night.
I don't know why Gamble told you.
Already making enemies day one.
Oh, Gamble didn't tell me squat.
Some lady called up to HQ
and she wantedto know
if sweet baby Miko liked her cookies.
Didn't realize you had a girlfriend.
- Shut up. - What?
She sounded... young.
You read up on Xander Rodriguez yet?
Yeah, 14 years old,
son of Tom Rodriguez and Lydia Samuels.
They divorced a year ago. Dad's a personal trainer,
Mom works in I.T.
I don't think Mom works in I.T.
Detectives had parents fill out a form this morning.
Lydia listed her occupation as I.T. support,
but her profile
on CareerGrid says she's a cybersecurity analyst.
Why would she be downplaying her job on the day
her son gets kidnapped?
Let's pull her work history.
Anything jump out at you?
Deacon, this is where we caught the truck.
Which means they could have brought the kids
somewhere north of Chatsworth.
But that doesn't really narrow it down.
No. Well, it's somewhere to start.
She, uh,
she mentioned you lived with them.
For a couple of months
when I was a junior in high school, yeah.
I was acting out real bad that year.
I mean, my pops wasn't home.
When my mom would work nights,
I went and convinced myself that I was grown.
Thought I could make my own schedule,
set my own curfew.
So one night I came home at 2:00 a.m.,
and my mom was standing right there
and she was furious.
But I looked her dead in the eye and I said,
"I am the man of the house, I can do whatever I want."
I can't imagine that going over well with Charice.
That was gasoline on fire, Deac.
She told me she wasn't gonna put up with any more BS
from the men in her life.
But my dumb ass said something
about her not being able to keep a man.
She kicked me out right then and there.
- Hmm. - I deserved it.
That's when the Kincaids took you in?
Yeah, for a couple of months.
My first morning there,
Coach hauled me off to school at 5:00 a.m.
I thought he was just gonna make me
run some laps or something.
He broke out an apron.
Yeah, he put me to work.
Turns out, my high school cafeteria was used
to feed at-risk young people before class started.
Kincaid and his wife started the program.
How long he make you do that?
Man, he had me scrubbing pans till the end of the school year.
Even after my mom let me come back home.
He told me the measureof a man
was the number of people he served.
Taught me a lot about football,
but he taught me more about life and integrity.
I've never known anyone like him.
I've known someone like him.
You ever thank him for what he did for you?
No.
I don't think I ever have.
Well, you're gonna get that chance
'cause we're gonna find him. We're gonna find him,
we're gonna find those kids.
All right,
tell you what, when we get out of here,
I'm gonna buy each one of you a snow cone.
Okay. Now listen,
you each take a sip of water,
but just one sip, all right?
- Lucy, you first. - Okay.
Just one sip.
Do you think we'll have enough air?
Oh, plenty, plenty.
Look, all we need to do is take controlled breaths.
Okay? Four seconds in
and four seconds out.
Just like that. All right, come on, do it with me.
Four seconds in.
Four out.
Four in.
Four out.
Four in. Four...
Four out.
Keep going, keep going. F-Four in.
Four out.
I'd rather be with my family till Xander's home safe.
Can you guys explain what I'm doing here?
Actually, we were hoping you could explain something to us.
You wrote here that you work in I.T. support.
Yeah, I install software, that sort of thing.
But you don't just install software,
you write it.
Security software for HSX Technologies.
No...
There are dozens of high-value clients using
your software to protect their inventory.
Financial institutions, government agencies.
Why'd you go into your office this morning
after you learned your son was missing?
People handle stress differently. I...
I like to work. Is that a crime?
It's just unusual.
Considering you left your office ten minutes later.
Didn't have the tablet when you went in,
had the tablet when you came out.
Why'd you go into your office, Ms. Samuels?
What's on that tablet?
Am I under arrest or something?
Course not. You're the victim here.
So I'm free to go?
As a bird.
One more question, though.
Do you have that tablet in your purse?
Ms. Samuels, deliberately concealing evidence is a crime.
My son is missing.
I don't get why I'm the one being questioned.
Because you're hiding something.
You realize, if we arrest you,
we'll see what's inside your purse anyway?
This file is what they want?
Right after I heard Xander was missing, I...
I got an email from the kidnappers.
What'd it say?
That I had to copy
my office hard drive and send it to them.
My building is air-gapped, so I had to use the café
next door.
Do you have any idea
which client they might be trying to target?
No.
Please. They said that they would let Xander
and the other kids go if I did what they asked.
I'm begging you.
Please, just let them steal
whatever it is they want to steal.
Gather the equipment. No signs of us left behind.
We'll meet you on the way out.
We meet where we planned.
And the kids?
They won't last long in there.
Stay put till we call,
just in case someone noses around.
Hey, kids.
They drove away.
They're gone.
Coach, it smells weird in here, like rotten eggs
or something.
Yeah, well, that's how old mines smell.
It's pretty gross, huh?
Yeah.
Come on, man, we... we're gonna suffocate in here.
Try anything again,
I start pulling you out and shooting you
one by one.
Hey, kids.
Come over here. I need your light.
Okay, good.
Just hold it right there.
That's fresh air.
Okay, I want you to line up single file.
Stick your mouth up here and get you some good,
fresh air.
- One at a time, right? - Okay.
All right. Take a deep breath of fresh air.
Yeah.
That's good, that's good. All right, next.
What'd you find?
Just spoke to the VP of sales for the tech company.
He confirmed their software was sold to 16 banks, but get this,
the past two weeks, they've been piloting
their vault software at two additional banks,
hoping to get their business.
The bank Beverly Crest
lists the old Yemeni royal family as a client.
The prince our kidnappers worked for
owns a deposit locker in their vault.
He's also the proud owner
of $100 million
of pure, unadulterated gold bars.
If he's storing 'em at Beverly Crest...
The kidnappers are stealing from their old boss.
We got to go.
Not a word.
Ahead of schedule.
Move a muscle, and you end up like your friend.
Still no answer at the bank.
Patrol just arrived.
Said all the doors are locked and the loading dock, too.
They're gonna set up a perimeter, try to make contact.
All right, listen up. If we need to go in,
we got to be ready for trouble from any direction.
Suspects are heavily armed ex-military.
Not to mention willing to abduct a bus full of kids.
Probably willing to kill 'em, too.
If they're not dead already.
Sorry. Sometimes whatever's in my mind just...
comes out. I'm working on it.
That's not always a bad thing.
Look, Gamble. I know this ain't your first SWAT rollout,
but it's your first one with us.
Just remember, your eyes and ears
are just as vital as your weapon.
Ten blocks out.
All right, check your gear.
When we breach, you're on the key, Miko.
Alfaro.
Alfaro. Got it?
What?
Are you finished?
I said we'll call you when we're on the road.
Stick to the plan.
LAPD! Whoever's inside,
exit through the lobby doors. One person at a time...
Help me. We need to get this to the van.
You come back for the other one.
Thanks, man.
Witness saw a van
park in the loading dock on the three side,
two armed men pulled the door shut.
It's game time. Keep it tight. Two side. Follow me.
Alfaro.
Take cover.
We interrupted 'em.
Millions in gold just sitting here for the taking.
There's no one here.
No, they're here, all right. Keep moving.
Tan!
22-David. One suspect down.
Deac, keep pushing. Go.
Hey, where are the kids?
Tell me where they're at.
He's gone.
We've got hostages back here.
And one security guard, deceased.
Tan, let's go.
- Here you go. - Thank you.
Ma'am, what's the quickest way to the loading dock?
Down the hallway and turn left.
All right, Deacon, Powell, Alfaro,
y'all hit the loading dock. We got the hostages. Go.
LAPD! Drop your weapon!
Moving.
Going hands-on.
Second suspect down.
Hondo?
Get this, he just sent this text a couple minutes ago.
"Don't call again. Leave the kids in the mine."
The suspects left someone behind with the kids.
They're still alive.
Wait, Deac, you said, "Being kept in a mine"?
That's what it says.
All right, EMTs, they're all yours.
Gamble, Tan, let's move!
Stay with me, kids.
We're gonna get out of here.
Sir, that's the only phone number our dead suspect's
called all afternoon.
It's linked to a sat phone.
FBI's working with the network operator.
We're closing in on a remote ten-mile radius
north of the 118.
How many mines in the area?
A half dozen.
Feds got birds in the air,
and the entire cavalry's en route.
Hang on.
Geo-locator's
narrowing in on the Santa Susana Pass
north of Chatsworth, due east of Simi Hills.
Wait a minute, sir.
That's Silent Ridge Mine.
Looks like it has two points of entry.
Half a mile apart.
All right, we land in the middle.
And we move on foot.
It says here that the EPA shut down Silent Ridge
in the '80s after two miners died in a sulfur leak.
It's still designated hazardous.
Which means these kids may not have a lot of time.
Step on it, Tan.
Hey, kids.
I think I'm getting it open.
Kids, stay back.
Ju... just let the children go.
Please, y-you got no cause
to harm us.
Get back inside, old man.
Wait, wait, wait.
You, stay here.
Move.
Powell, Gamble, with me. We'll take the west side.
Let's go.
We got fresh tire tracks.
Chopper got a read east of here: heat sigs.
Might be the kids.
- You get that, Deacon? - Roger.
Approaching now.
All right, we're headed your way.
Hold.
There's a vehicle coming. Take cover.
That's Kincaid in the passenger seat.
Go! Go!
Is anyone in there?!
Yes, help! Help us!
- Please! - What's your name?
- Lucy! - All right, Lucy.
My neighbor is Sergeant Kay. I'm a police officer.
Everything's gonna be all right.
We're gonna get you out of there,
but I need your help.
I need you to get everyone as far back
as you can and cover your ears.
Yeah, okay, okay.
You let me when you're set, okay?
We're set!
Three, two, one.
- Lucy? - Everyone in there okay?
Yeah. We're all okay.
But they took Coach Kincaid.
Our friends are looking for him.
We got you.
I got you, I got you.
Give me your hand. Right to me.
Last one.
Okay.
You come closer, I will shoot him.
Oh, yeah, then what you gonna do?
I want a way out of here.
I let him go, you let me go.
That's somewhere to start. Keep talking.
Hondo.
Tell Judy I love her.
No, you'll tell her yourself, Coach.
You know the cop?
Run back over that ridge, Hondo.
You do that, and maybe I'll let him go.
Give me a chance to escape.
We're not going anywhere.
It's time for you to give it up, man.
It sounds like you're having a breakdown.
- I'll kill him! - Did you hear what I said?
You're having a damn breakdown!
Coach.
Are you hurt? You okay?
I'm okay, I'm okay.
The kids, Hondo.
Check on the kids.
20-David. Suspect down.
Deac, what's your status?
Kids are all accounted for.
They appear to be unharmed.
Kids are safe.
You did it, Coach.
- You did it. - Oh.
Oh, my God.
Excuse me.
Mayor should be here any minute.
He wants to greet you himself.
But on behalf of SWAT,
I just want to say how incredibly proud we are
of each and every young person here.
You showed tremendous courage
in the face of danger
and inspired us all.
So...
thank you for your bravery.
Thank you.
Breakdown, Coach.
I don't even remember how many thousand times
I've yelled that at players.
Finally came in handy.
Probably gonna get a medal for this, you know.
Yeah, well, uh, never put my hands
on a state title, so I'll take whatever they give me.
Listen, uh, Hondo, I...
I can't even find the words to say thank you.
No, no.
I was just doing my job, Coach.
You know, speaking of thank-yous,
I think I owe you one.
A big one.
I want to thank you for taking me in my junior year.
My live could've been real different
if you didn't push me the way you did.
Oh, what else was I supposed to do, huh?
You were one of the best corners I had.
You know, I've coached hundreds of kids over the years
but not many like you, Hondo.
And I'm not just talking about on the field.
All I did, son, was
to help you find the man that was already in there.
It's like you said, I was just doing my job.
Yeah.
Thank you, Coach.
Hey, what's up, man?
Thought you were gonna say Miko.
Not loving the new nickname, are you?
No, it's not new.
My grandma, she's Albanian.
Miguel doesn't really translate,
so she called me Miko as a kid.
Oh, so why don't you like it, then?
Long story, but she died a few years ago.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Oh, don't be.
She was the worst.
Controlling. Selfish.
She was the reason why my mom left home.
Do you know why they call me Deacon?
Figure 'cause you're a churchy guy?
Well, pretty much, yeah.
But back when I started out as a cop,
I had a late-night Saturday shift.
Clocked out at sunrise, and a few of the guys
were heading to a strip club. I made the mistake
of telling them I couldn't go 'cause I was going to mass.
Yeah.
After that, I was Deacon.
Holier than thou.
They were mocking me.
Nickname stuck.
How'd you get used to it?
I don't know, time, I guess?
See, after a while, it felt less like ridicule
and more like affection.
Like I was part of the family.
That's nice.
Yeah.
Doesn't mean I want everyone calling me Miko.
- Maybe it'll grow on you. - Like a fungus?
Look, if it bothers you that much,
just tell the team.
I'm sure they'll understand.
Hey, Gamble.
Listen, what you overheard in Commander Hicks' office,
nobody's gonna judge you for anything
but your own performance.
With all due respect, sir, yeah, they will.
My dad killed a cop.
Doesn't matter that it was a decade ago.
You already know, soon as word gets around,
it's gonna be the same old thing.
I, I just... I want you to know,
I can handle the judgment that's coming my way.
It won't stop me from doing my job.
When we first met, you were fresh out of the academy,
and I saw something in you.
Your fight, your focus.
But what your pops did derailed your career.
And I'm grateful every day that you helped me get a slot
on the Oakland PD, especially
when things got too hot down here.
But let's not kid ourselves.
It is not gonna be any easier for me now
than it was ten years ago.
No, you're probably right.
You're gonna have to decide what play you're gonna make.
I'm gonna prove I belong here.
Show Hicks you made the right call by bringing me back.
That's what I wanted to hear.
Hey, hey.
Now that everyone's here,
can I say something?
Look, I respect
every one of you.
You're not just colleagues, you're family.
And we rely on each other out there,
which starts with mutual respect.
So it would really mean a lot to me if we drop
this nickname business and...
everybody just called me by my name.
All right.
We hear you.
Whatever you say...
Miko.
You guys suck.
- Miko! Miko! Miko! - Sweet baby Miko.
