It was the night he started
beating Jeffrey with a belt

I had to get those children out.

You can't imagine what it's like
hoping you never see

your own son again
as long as you live.

watching over this family.

were accepted in our family

Jeffrey and Serena
still managed to get themselves

into considerable trouble,
but they were driven to it

by high spirits
and not by cruelty.

For the first time
in their young lives

they began to feel loved
and protected.
