But antiheroes such as bounty hunters push scriptwriters into a certain form

cynicism.

This cynicism was conveyed in several ways.

Randall's reply is usually terse.

And when caught in a crossfire, he remains clear -headed.

The words I tell them the sheriff's dead?

I'm on their side, huh?

They cut you to pieces to get to me.

You said so yourself.

I tell them the sheriff's alive, that puts me on your side.

Either way, I end up with dirt in my face, right?

And the tone hardens. As long as they think he's still breathing.

Randall cynically stays out of the way so he may claim his bounty.

Yeah, I wonder when you're going to get around to that.

Well, unattached young fella, no ties, good fighting man.

You're not careful, you're going to flatter me to death.

Now listen to me.

As far as Kane is concerned, our business is finished.

You've got a thousand dollar bounty coming to you, Mr. Randall. You want to

protect it, don't you?

I earned that thousand dollars once.

I wouldn't want to have to do it again.

Then I'm going to put the sheriff out of his misery.

And when Randall is faced with an injured man, he acts not out of

instead for money.

McQueen's lines are well delivered, with an added hint of humor. Pretty common

-sounding fella.

Yeah, well, this fella's got an uncommon habit.

That the Lorenz woman?

Yeah.

There were two reasons he wanted to talk to her. First off, she bought a ticket

for Amarillo, never turned it in.

Well, that kind of shot her alibi.

That's right.

Then there was a motive.

Seems with the partner out of the way and Lorenz wanted for murder, she could

claim full ownership of the mine.

But what about the bounty?

Oh, yeah, he says you two are eligible. Split the reward.

Was it worth it?

Tell you the truth, it wasn't.

At least not for Jake.

Later, the tone of the series hardens, and women bear the brunt of Randall's

character. I'm going to hang Harry Quinn.

Listen, ma 'am. Season two introduces a string of women, each being more cynical

than the last.

Trial.

Just what kind of a trial would it be, Mr. Randall?

A fair one, I imagine.

Harry Quint's entitled to a short rope.

Men like that need exterminating so this country will be fit for decent people

to live in.

Some are driven by vengeance.

I don't think another killing is going to help tame it, but I do believe that

the law will.

Others are driven by money, which Randall finds can be a poisonous

The only thing that bothers me is that you sent Randall out to bring in that

One of the female characters goes as far as to kill the man she loves for his

money.

But there are so many men in Arizona and so little money.

Other times, entire episodes are given over to dark cynicism, when a man who

to be hanged takes revenge on the town that sentenced him, and forces the

inhabitants to destroy it.

The arrival of the Jason character in Season 2 added a short -lived, softer

touch.

I feel like I made an investment.
