All in all, I feel good.
I'm like, ready to get
back riding again.

And I don't wanna, like,

be hesitant when I tour again.

Looking back, I now realize
I had my whole family
with me my entire career.

You know, traveling
in the van, showing up
at the competitions,

always being there
for the ups and downs,
and then...

You know, I kind of left
the family behind to go
do my thing.

And at a certain point,
I just, like...

I needed that back in my life.

I was rebuilding
that family support.

[laughing]

[Toby] He just became
a happier snowboarder,
and I think he--

I think he honestly just
found new love for the sport.

who crashes like that

doesn't show up in Austria
and rip like he's doing
right now.

He's just that determined.

ever since I can remember,

been expected to do well,

and even more so, myself.

It's like, in so many aspects,
I would say yes.

goals in life

You can be
the Olympic champion

and... and you know, but yeah,

you sacrifice things
along the way.

And it's... And it's
all up to your kind of like

moral compass of, you know,
"Is it worth it?"

"Is it still something
you need to pursue?"

"Is it still something
you feel inside?"

Every single moment
from basically two years ago

all the way up to this point
has been...

...just the craziest journey.

My liver's bleeding,
my face got ripped open,

there's just,
you know, hundred...

[sighing] Fuck, I don't know.

This is stupid, I'm over it.

[Esther] We chased
the weather,
we chased a good pipe,

constantly switching homes
and going
to a different mountain.

You know, just trying
to keep him motivated

and anything would just
throw him off for that day.

[Shaun] Now that I had made
the Olympic team,

it was all about this window
of time before the Olympics

to get the trick
that I hadn't done yet.

And I'd promised myself
after the crash

that I wouldn't do the trick
until the conditions
were perfect.

And...

...every step of the way,

we were running
into these problems.

We'd fly out and the machine
that cut the halfpipe broke.

So we're like,
"Let's go to Canada."

We'd fly to Canada,
we'd get there,

storm blows in.

Hi, ah!

[Esther] He'd come back
to the house and be like,

"Fuck! I didn't
do the trick again," you know?

And he'd... he'd be
so frustrated.

[sighing] Losing my mind
at this house.

So, like, amped up to compete.

It's just like,
I start spinning and go crazy.

When I'm on my board,

I'm excited, I'm happy,

and I'm like,
feeling motivated, you know?

It's just like that downtime
is just so hard.

Sitting here kind of like...

...going over and over
everything in my mind,

and there's, like,
nothing I can do about it,
you know?

Have a lot of things
on your plate, trying to...

...put those aside
and just go to sleep
is... is a huge challenge.

["Iron Man" playing]

[announcer on TV] Shaun White
gets it going!

Oh, my goodness!

White comes in with
heavy contact!

[Shaun] I was in a full,
just, meltdown.

* I am Iron Man *

[Shaun] I... I locked
myself in my room,

I closed
all the window shades,

and I was just, like,
sitting there in the corner,
just like...

[gasping intensely]

[chuckling] ...stirring!

Because I'd
had this nightmare,

this reoccurring nightmare
ever since...

It was like the day
after Sochi,

I just kept having
these nightmares

where... and it
was always the same,

it was that I...

It was the next day,
was the next Olympics,

which would
be the Korean Olympics.

And somehow for some reason
they fast-forwarded four years

and it was tomorrow,
and I'm there

at this competition,
completely unprepared.

And I'm sitting there going,
"Wow, I'm about to lose
the Olympics again."

This was, like,
haunting me, and now
I'm sitting here, like,

"Oh, my God!
Like, this is happening
for real, real life!"

And I just
had a full breakdown,

I... I didn't want
to talk to JJ,

didn't want to talk to Toby,
I was just like,
"It's over, what do we do?"

And they helped me
come out of that situation

by having me watch
this commercial.

* Has he lost his mind *

* Can he see or is he blind? *

* Can he walk at all *

[Shaun] I remember
watching it and being like,
"Oh, my God."

This is who I am
in this commercial,

like I'm expected to do it,
I'm gonna... you know
what I mean?

Who is this scared person
that's afraid to like...

...you know,
step to this challenge?

And I just told myself,
if I'm gonna get this trick,

it'll just have
to be in Korea.

Heading to Korea,
super exciting.

We got, uh,
the rest of the team
in the back here...

...looking very excited.

[Esther] Of course
there's pressure
from the outside,

but I realized it was him.

Like, he put so much
pressure on himself.

And the crazy thing is,

we got to Korea and he still
didn't put the run together.

[crowd cheering]

[Esther] But he was like,
"This is the run
I need to do to win."

And we were all
just so stressed out.

We're like, "Well,
how is he gonna do it

if he never even
put it together?"

[reporter 1] It's final time,
and it couldn't be
any more exciting.

Shaun White, Scotty James,
Ayumu Hirano are leading

the way for gold here
in Korea.

-[JJ] How are you feeling?
-[Shaun] Pretty good.

It's really hard to see,
but it's, you know, it's good.

It's a good pipe.

Challenging day, I mean,
low light.

He's tired, but, uh,
I know he can do it.

He just needs to dig deep.

of the heaviest days

of halfpipe snowboarding
in history.
