We are out on Long Pond
in Somerville,

We are headed to meet
Tom Gallagher.

He bought his camp
20 years ago.

Tom is a regular
at our restaurant, Woodshed.

He's been talking about his
place for a long time, so--

in the middle of Manhattan...

always made sure

that we had the taste
of the country.

Maine was always perfect
because it had both ocean
and mountains

and pine forests,
which we always loved.

So, from then on,
I was hooked,

and I said,
"I needed to have the camp."

- -It's safe to say Trigger likes Willie.

Right.

So, I looked
for quite a while,
probably a couple of years.

And I found this place.

Cool.

And it was perfect.

So, tell us
about the cabin.

Well, I bought it in 2002,
and I've done a little bit
of work.

Well, actually, a lot of work.

One of my best friends, Artie,

he was an electrician.

He passed away
a year and a half ago,

and he was up here
quite a bit.

He helped me do
a lot of the electrical,

and just general help,
just getting things done.

So, this renovation
is in his honor.

-Awesome. What a special thing
to do for him.
-Thank you.

When I bought the place,
it was pretty much a shell.

And he helped me
do a lot of the work.

And after we were
done for the day,

we'd sit by the fire,
have some beers.

And he was just that
special guy, you know,

he was a brother.

So, the outside,
you know, looks like
fairly new siding,

fairly new roof.

So, I mean,
it's on a foundation.

What are you looking
to have done to the camp?

Yeah, I like
to entertain folks up here,

and I need some
more space to do that.

So, I have an addition
put out on the side here,

basically open up
the kitchen area

and move the kitchen
into that addition.

That way, you can
open up the living area

to be more receptive
to having guests.

And then, have a slider
coming out to a covered porch.

And that way,
you could sit there.

And enjoy the like--

You wanna keep this entrance?

and then have a new
front door put in

- on the other side of the addition.

And that would
pretty much become
the main entrance.

Is there anything
landscaping wise

you'd want done
out on exterior?

Well, probably, we'll have to
move this stone wall out

a little bit to fit the deck
on the outside.

So, as far
as the cabin itself,

I mean, how much
are we doing inside?

The wood, I'd like to keep
the kitchen cabinets
a nice retro style.

I'd like to have
those restored.

I'd like to keep a couple
of walls inside

and build bookshelves.

And there's a loft inside,

have that taken down,
and then that would open up

the inside living space.

Bathroom, bedroom,
all that's fine?

That's all been updated
over the years I've been here.

- Plumbing is good, electrical is good?
- - Plumbing is good.

Electrical is good.

What do you have
for budget for this project?

Thirty-five-thousand
dollars.

When are you hoping to have
this work completed by?

Do you use this in the winter?

I can. The road is plowed,

so I still have access
to it all winter.

This is the perfect build
for going in the winter

It has some heat,

about it.

to a cold outhouse
to use the bathroom.

On the interior
of the camp,

we're gonna tear down the wall
that separates the living room

from the mud room
and get rid of the loft.

We'll add a new addition
and extend the kitchen out
into that space,

so that we can give Tom
more space for family
and friends.

On the exterior of the camp,
we'll move the rock wall out

a few more feet
from where it sits now,

so that we can put a deck
off the new addition

with a covered porch
facing the water.

We'll add an eastern
white pine

that ties in nicely
to the existing siding

with another door
off the backside.

-Perfect.

colors that he likes.

the neutral natural colors,

so I thought sage would
look nice with the wood.

shut the water off,
pulled the dock,

you know, still use it,
it was a nice fall,

so we didn't wanna take
away from it entirely.

emptied out in the kitchen.

Today, we're focusing on just
getting the platform built
and supported...

so when we come to reassemble
everything appropriately,

the sheath back.

So, it is rainy today,

and we are unable to work
at the Gallagher camp.

So, I'm meeting Scottie here
at the workshop.

Tom wanted to save those old,
probably from the '50s vintage
metal cabinets.

So, we are going
to spruce them up.

Scottie is the guy
for this job

because he's really good
friends with Tom.

I was supposed to do this
three years ago.

Three years ago?

So, he definitely wanted
this done for a while.

What do we want to do first?
Get those stickers off?

We can scrape them off.

what he's doing...

That's not even coming off.

...refurbishing
metal cabinets.

He really likes his tomatoes.

I'd say.

So, the first thing that we
need to do is peel off
these stickers.

Go, you got it. You did good.

Once we removed
the stickers...

You can
follow behind me,
whatever I don't get.

...we went and did
a nice sanding

to get all of the rust off.

And also just get the surface
ready to be painted.

- Get the bare spots and most of the rust.

We chose to use spray paint
because it gives that
really flat, flat look.

Won't have
any paintbrush strokes
in it because it's on metal.

Everything's really,
really noticeable.

Yeah!

We picked out
a semi-gloss

and that finish
is very similar

to the original finish
of those cabinets.

I think it's gonna look great.

There we go.

Back at the gallery
camp this morning.

It's a frosty, like,
12 degrees, we got here.

Well, the guys are doing
a great job.

This job for Tom
is not typical,

but we're putting an addition
on to the camp

that was only built
25 years ago.

You know,
it has great vinyl siding.

But we don't do vinyl siding
if we don't have to,
we do it our way.

So, we're gonna
tie in the vinyl siding
on the original cabin

into our beautiful
eastern white pine.

And we wanna make sure
it's flashed properly.

And there's gonna be areas
where water is gonna come off
that other roof.

We wanna make sure
we tie in everywhere,

we're gonna be protected.

Here's a good example
of what we're gonna tie
on the vinyl siding here.

But when we come in here,
you know, we're gonna...

we're gonna wanna
put an inside corner
that's gonna be pine.

It's gonna get painted
the trim color, green.

And then, they'll put
their J-Channel in.

So, this will accept
all the vinyl siding.

And this one will transition
over to our pine side
and keep moving.

I'm coming around
here to the beautiful
French doors here.

Coming over the porch
looking at the lake.

When you come inside,
spray foam it,
and tie it back up.

This place looks great.

Yeah, I'm gonna trade you

Yeah,
we've got very little time

Spray foam got done yesterday,
the day before.

So, today, all about getting
as much pine on the walls
as possible.

to do something

to honor Tom's
best friend, Art.

a little while ago.

I'm taking this apart.

Art was also an electrician.

And he was the one
that actually helped
Tom renovate the cabin.

So, I wanted to do
something to honor Art.

First thing I needed to do
was take off the original
lampshade.

To get rid of that altogether,
I wanted to use
the wire frame.

All right, let's see if this
is gonna be...

If I can get this
tight enough to stay.

And once I did that,
it was pretty much

just cutting the wires
to length.

Here we go.

Oh, boy.

Then I need to separate them
out into groups of roughly
five-seven pieces.

And then, fold them in half.

Like that.

And then, tie a little knot
around the wire.

And then, just keep on going.

with a high gloss poly.

Yep, I've had some
of the nice artists
and craftsmen

that we have
at Kennebec Cabin Company.

I picked out
one pillow in particular.

It was a blue one
with pinecones

because I knew
the color scheme

that I had going on here,

and we were trying to keep it
with a masculine feel.

You know, I like to use local
whenever I can.

So, I grabbed a few things
just to make sure that
I'm always supporting them.

Two weeks ago,
we had a storm come through.

Kind of unexpected,
caught everybody off guard.

So, it postponed the reveal
by a couple of weeks.

It's a a 16 by 16 edition.

You've got a six-foot
covered porch.

Metal standing seam roof
to match what was there.

And eastern white pine siding
with a nice exterior stain
on that.

Everything's on pucks,
off the ground.

Francis came in.

The first thing he did
was pull the stones away,
then reset 'em.

Use those two
long ones right there

for a nice seat
right in front.

- Great.
- -They'll have views of the water.

And, yeah, it ties in nicely
to the existing stairs.

I can't wait to be
sitting on that porch.

I love the doors.

It's absolutely perfect.

the whole living space.

I made out of wires

because, you know,
your friend, Art,
did the electricity, right?

I wanted to do
something to honor him.

So, I got these old wires
and I tied them to knots

and just something
totally different.

Wow, that is so cool,

I mean, the imagination
and forethought

to do something
to honor Artie.

It's you, Artie.

It really meant a lot to me.

Yeah, and then
we have a reading nook
over there for you.

It's a book shop.

A lot of your friends
at the Woodshed

told us you were looking
for a little place to sit
and read.

With the lamp
right there,

it kind of makes
a little special spot.

- Look at this.
- - A whole new kitchen.

Wow! Look at this.

- You got to keep my old cabinets and everything.
- - We did.

Scottie and I took that
over to the wood shop
and sanded it down.

- Wow.
- This is beautiful.

I wasn't sure
if it was salvageable.

I didn't know
if there was rust
underneath and everything.

So, when they were
able to finish that off,

and put it back
in the kitchen,

I mean, it's absolutely
fantastic. I love it.

And a kitchen door.

A new door.

Woo-hoo!

I'll have another way
to get in and out.

And it's closer
to the driveway.

So, it makes
a lot more convenient.

These floors.

Wow.

It's gonna be
a great place to sit here
in the summertime.

I like sitting out
and watching the weather
come across the lake.

And you can't really
do that sitting outside

if it's pouring rain.

This is where
I'm gonna find you.

Just put a covered porch.

And that way I could sit
outside on the deck

through all kinds of weather.

to get it completed.
