So we're mowing memory lane
right now, pretty much.

But Margaret and Bobby's house
recently had a fire

that started in the wood stove

and pretty much
gutted the entire place.

was the fire?

Six months ago or so.

Pretty bad situation,
so they need our help

to put it back together.

Margaret and my father
were best friends.

She was not scared to, uh...

This house is not typically

but because Margaret and Bobby
are such dear old friends,

we had to do the work,

And Ashley and Chase,
the first time I met them,

they were probably
four and six.

who's Chase and Ashley's dad,

introduced me to them

his personality.

He had a great sense of humor.

Just like old times.

I became very involved
with Chase and Ashley's lives,

much like people are
with their best friend's kids.

The fire started
in the basement.

Some kindling
fell out of the wood stove,

and I went outside
to get a bucket of snow.

And by the time I got back
with the second bucket,

- it was twice as high as that

-and up to the ceiling.
-That fast.

Yeah, I had to close the door.
I mean...

That probably saved
the house from...

The fireman
came up to me and said,

"You did the right thing,
closing that door."

The cleaning company
came in after the fire

and cleaned everything back
as much as they could

and removed anything
that smelled like smoke,

which is pretty much every
surface area in the house.

We lost a lot.

So when was the house built?

In 1987.

Besides getting you back
in here as soon as possible.

That started out as a woodshed
that Eric built.

And then I extended it.

The extension part fell off.

That was a lovely idea,
but he never used it
as a woodshed.

He just used it
as a junk place.

to turn into a patio.

to be back in your house?

I guess what seems realistic
would be like 16 weeks,

1st of December.

to repair all the fire damage

and just update the house,
make it ready for you.

we just need a set of keys.

You know, downstairs is

pretty straightforward
and open.

They set us up for success.

All new kitchen

And then she really wants

guest bedroom behind you?

On the interior
of Margaret and Bobby's house,

we need to remove
all of the charred material

and reframe downstairs
for a new bathroom.

And upstairs,
we'll redo all the sheetrock

and spruce it up
with wainscoting down below.

We'll add a space
for a washer and dryer,

all new kitchen, and give it
a fresh coat of paint.

we're going to get rid of the
chimney that my father built,

new roof, new windows,
new main entrance,

and new siding
with a full rock finish

to give the house

that old shed

and create a new patio area

where the carpet
is on the ground.

is reinsulate the walls,

rewire everything.

I think all of the Sheetrock
up to the ceiling

needs to come off
in this room.

reconfigured to get

a washer and dryer upstairs.

That wall going downstairs
is gonna become a half wall.

Yeah, I think really
the big thing on this place

is just dealing with where
the fire actually charred

and burnt the wood.

A lot of the floor joists
in the main living area

are compromised.

So we need
to come up with a plan

to get those out of there.

Is that spot bad too?

Some of the subfloor
is pretty burnt upstairs,

so we'll start by just
peeling back the subfloor

in the living area.

Are we going to get rid of
all this that's charred,

just for smell purposes.

I don't know. Like...

the floor joists,

of the fire-damaged wood out

so that's going

You know, once the walls
are closed back in,

that will seal in a lot,

giving a coat of paint
on anything.

As many layers of protection
as we can have, the better.

the fire remediation company

did a great job,

and we'll just try
and build off from that.

to the ceilings

And then we'll go from there.

So we're taking
the chimney down.

So basically,
you just chip away at it,

peel it apart
a brick at a time.

So it's pretty easy.
Most homes,

it'll go from brick to block,

once we get
below the roofline.

a piece of plywood

to seal up the roof.

Uh, the wood sill
got in the basement.

It's week three
at the Dunn Camp
in South China, Maine.

Dumpster has finally arrived,

so we're getting the backyard
all cleaned up.

Inside, we're removing
all the subfloor boards
in the main room

so that we can get down
to the charred joists
in the basement.

So I guess
these can start coming off.

And start replacing those.

A little bit more to me.

Now that all the charred
materials have been removed,

we can reframe downstairs
for the new bathroom.

And get our new subfloor in.

Got it.

Outside,
we're replacing the old roof

with new asphalt shingles.

Don't tell me
it was a good time.

We've got Sarah and Justin

taking down
the old shed setup.

We got the entire place
sprayed out with primer

for our first layer
of protection

against that charred smell.

So now we're getting
electrical and plumbing going.

This will be the vent
for my kitchen sink

and the dishwasher.

Check, make sure you level.

Then, once they set
the cabinets here,

there'll be a trap right here
for your drain to hook to.

We've started to paint
the upstairs bedrooms.

We ended up
pulling off the siding

off the front and the back.

Because so many windows
were being replaced.

we're doing a house for her

and they bought a lawnmower
together back in the day.

A riding lawnmower.

My brother and I

mowing the lawns.

One of them was hers.

So that's one of her
fond memories of us,

is mowing her lawn.

So we came in and we met them
on lawnmowers,

so we thought a perfect thing
would be to leave them

with something lawnmower.

I just had a couple
kicking around the junk yard.

He found these three seats,
and lo and behold?

I'm the lawnmower man.

ripped the cushions right off.

plumbing's been roughed in,

so really it's starting
to close everything in.

So instead of throwing
the pine at it,

we're going to throw
the Sheetrock at it.

It's a good thing
we love Margaret.

Not really looking forward
to a day of Sheetrocking.

spruce everything up.

got painted.

And floors went down.

Yeah, it's a big house,

We promised Margaret

left over

from a state project.

And my father grew up
close to the state capitol,

so he was
constantly driving by there,

grabbed a bunch of those,

and brought them out here.

And I think we laid those down

when I was probably
in junior high school.

Things are looking good
at Margaret and Bobby's

out in South China.

Jason and his son are working

on wainscoting
down in the basement.

Wainscoting's
going on upstairs.

Walls are all sheetrocked.

Electrical's all roughed in.

Bedrooms are
pretty much finished up.

They just need
trim and electrical,

but we've got two bedrooms.

Main bathroom right there.

Doug's working
on the bathroom downstairs.

Oh, that was a good one.

the wainscoting looked

mixed with the paint.

Margaret loves bright colors,

and this yellow is
definitely bright,

but it's what she wanted.

Kitchen cabinets are
going to go here.

Waiting on those before we can
order the countertop.

New floors throughout.

We just got to put
the floors down in here,

and Francis is
working out back.

Got all the sheds cleaned up
and everything,

so we're looking good.

My mother called me
to let me know

that Margaret was
in the hospital.

She had been fighting cancer

for quite
a few years, actually.

They were doing
a great job keeping it at bay.

Everything was going great.

I was talking to her
almost on a daily basis.

She was taking tests.

They were
all coming back clean.

But then it just...

she went downhill fast.

She just wasn't feeling well,

so went to the hospital.

And, unfortunately,

never made it
out of the hospital.

Well, I'm glad
that we did get it ready

and Bobby can move back in

-before the holidays.

to get it done in time.

and Margaret were
best friends.

Margaret was best friends
with my father.

Luckily, Bobby comes
from a family.

I think he has eight siblings,
so plenty of support.

I think they'll all be
excited to see it.

I made him save and reuse

- some of the bricks from out front.

I helped my father

from the state building

the sidewalks there.

-Yeah.

Keeping some Eric connection,

because Eric had
been fundamental

in the building of the house.

And they've done that.

And, yeah, you know,

Margaret wanted
a nice dark siding,

and we decided
to kind of put the contrast

of the stone down below.

All-new windows.

New door.

It just stands out.

- Really?
- Yes.

-Got rid of the chimney.
-Yeah.

And so we had
to re-shingle the roof.

- Look at that.
- Wow.

I'm just amazed
at the difference.

This is like--
it's a whole new house.

And I think
if she wants to come back

and haunt this house,

-she's going
to like it enough.

It'll be
a much softer haunting.

to give you an idea,

this is where
the wood stove was.

It was right there?

Very nice.

And the colors.

It just has
the feel of a cabin.

Margaret picked out
the colors.

The woodwork is
a lovely color.

And this is
just vibrant and new and...

And cabin-y.

Yeah, so,
like, you were saying,

this is where
the fire originated.

Yeah, this is
quite the transformation.

This was definitely
the most damage.

Oh, it's amazing.

We ended up pulling out

almost all
of the floor stringers,

the subfloor, all-new framing,

sprayed the entire place out
with a couple coats of shellac

just to seal in as much
of that smoke as we could.

'Cause when
we first came in here,

I wasn't sure
we were going to be able

- to get rid
of the smell, but--
- You did.

Everything's spray-foamed,

all-new Sheetrock,

all-new wainscoting,

all-new windows,
all-new electrical.

- New floor.
- -New flooring that Margaret picked out.

- Yes, she did.
- Yeah.

And one big request was
a second bathroom downstairs.

Yes.
