So we are sailing on
Pocasset Lake today
in Wayne, Maine.

It's not really a giant lake.

Perfect size boat
for this lake.

This is the most comfortable
ride I've ever had, actually.

you spent a lot of time here.

Yeah, so Pocasset
is right in Wayne's hometown.

Chris and Lisa Toomen,

who actually live
in Wayne, New Jersey.

They've got a camp
on this lake,

and they're looking
for more space,
planning for grandkids,

and they're just
ready for an update.

Um, I think we lost our wind.

Well, this is really
a special place for my family.

I've actually been coming
to this lake since I was born.

Nice camp.

This doesn't look
that bad at all.

We rented on the other side
of the lake, uh,
for many years,

and then we bought
this camp in 1989,

and it's really been
a blessing

to be able to share
that with our kids.

We have three adult sons now

that have done
many of the same things
we did as kids,

so, uh, that's been great.

And it's ready for a refresh,

and, uh, we're looking forward
to what you can do with it.

Yeah, so what are you looking
to have done to the camp?

Well, when the whole
family's up,

it's a little bit
of a challenge
with sleeping space.

We only have two
small bedrooms off the back,

so we have bodies on couches,
bodies on air mattresses.

So if we can squeeze
some more sleeping space,

it would be really good
for us, maybe even a loft.

A new, uh, kitchen
and a new bathroom,
if we could.

A bigger shower
with a washer dryer.

Well, we have rocks in there

that the kids have been
getting every year.

They write their name
and the year on the rock,

and we'd like something
to put them in

because they're starting
to overflow on the floor.

That would be nice.

-Rock and roll.
-Yeah, rock and roll.

And right now,
there's only one small door

in and out of the camp,

so a second door
would be really useful.

Is there anything about
the camp that you love

and wouldn't wanna
see changed?

-We spend 99% of our time
on that porch.
-Okay.

It doesn't need
to remain untouched,

but as long as we still have
the view of the lake

and we can spend time there.

And I do a lot
of grilling outside,

so if we could do
something with that,
that'd be great, too.

One last thing,

if you look behind us here,
you can see our wellhead,

which ended up
right in the middle

of the front yard
and is kind of--

Yeah, interesting spot.

Yeah, so if you can figure out

something to hide that,
we'd appreciate it.

Are we doing the exterior?

-Yeah.

Are there any colors
that you're leaning towards?

I would just really like it
to blend into the background.

We are exposed here
on the lake,

so it doesn't stand out
in the scenery.

When are you hoping
to have this completed by?

I know we're on the end
of the summer season.

End of October, eight weeks.

How much do you have
to put into this renovation?

Uh, we're thinking $50,000.

to get this camp refreshed.

I can't even begin to express
how much it would mean to us

close access to the kitchen.

This is like we're at a diner.

Better use of this space

get a little challenging.

of the Tooman camp,

we'll get rid of all the old
paneling and replace it

with pine, new kitchen,
larger bathroom space

with room for
a washer and dryer.

We'll rip out the carpet
and put in new
hardwood floors.

And we're gonna raise
the ceiling by getting rid of

all the old collar ties
up in the attic

and put in a new loft space.

-Wow, that's nice.

On the exterior

we'll replace the broken post
underneath the camp,

add a dormer over
the back third of the camp

to create more headroom
for the new loft, new roof,

new entrance on
the kitchen side of the camp,

and new patio space
for grilling.

And we'll have our friend,
Danny Burns,
the chainsaw artist,

create a special covering
for the wellhead.

a feel for the camp.

Yeah, so we're at
the Tooman camp right now.

We're underneath here
just kind of, uh,

replacing some of these
broken concrete pillars.

The camp owners
did recently have

this place jacked and leveled.

But this one broke off right
here just at ground level.

This edge, that goes here,
this edge in here.

So, we're gonna get
that up out of there.

Get that filled in and get
a new post underneath it.

you can cut this?

This is all gonna
be hollowed out.

Then we'll get up
and strip the roof.

Inside, we're doing
a little dismantling here.

a dormer up above

where our loft is gonna go.

So, what we wanna do is
we wanna get all those rafters

To keep everybody moving,
keep progress going forward.

We can get
our loft decked over.

Before we tear off
the main part of the roof,

it'll give us a nice spot
to work from.

week three at Tooman.

We had a little bit of rain
come over the weekend,

but as you can see,
things are dried up.

So we're gonna go ahead.

We're gonna rip off
all the old shingles.

We're gonna prep that roof.

And get ready to rip it open
for our new dormer.

So today, I am stopping by
the Tooman camp.

Jake gave me a call

and said that he's getting
pretty close

to the painting stage.

they wanted something
that's gonna blend in,

so I wanted to bring
a few different options.

He's gonna be the one
that's actually putting
the paint

onto the cabin.

These two look amazing.

Yeah, well,
you haven't seen this one.

-When it dries,
it dries a little subtle.

So it's nice to talk with him

and kind of go over
the colors together.

the house to blend in.

So I found three greens.

in a festive mood.

Pocasset Lake in Wayne, Maine.

What we're doing today
is tearing the roof
off the place...

to put in a dormer
that's gonna cover the loft.

So what we have done
is, uh, cut our roof boards.

Stripped our roof.

Now Brad and I are working on
cutting the rafters off...

and, uh, opening it up.

So what we've got
here is we've got

our roof pitch
all figured out.

We've got our ridge pole
in place.

Now let's just build
these walls,

and then we'll put
our rafters up.

Frame in our gables,
sheath them up,

and get ready for windows.

Down below,
we've cut out
for a new doorway

for the kitchen side
of the camp.

We're gonna put on
a little deck

and some stairs from that.

And then we'll jump up,

we'll pull the shingles
off the roof

and get ready for metal.

They like to go through them
and just kind of like

look at them and reminisce.

And they just had 'em
in a basket.

So I'm trying
to find something to do
with these rocks.

I'm trying to figure out
a way so that then

they can continue
to add to it.

'Cause every year, they said
they add to their rocks.

So, I was thinking, A,
we could use them out
near the patio.

- B, we could use 'em over where

Danny Burns is gonna
be doing a sculpture
to cover that pipe.

And basically, every single
rafter had a truss system.

We've pulled
the whole thing up,

dormered that back...

some sort of collar tie

to lock it all together,

and we were thinking
that you could do
a couple of nice trusses

-just to keep it cathedral
and keep it open.

Yeah, so Vinnie
is a local timber framer.

He's worked with us
on a couple projects
in the past.

We needed some trusses,
so I called up Vin.

- Two 24-foot trusses.
- Yeah.

- Like, six by six?
- Okay. Yeah.

Probably makes sense to do
one right beside the door.

- Yeah.
- Right?

Yep.

One to the left of the window,

We need some sort
of collar ties to hold
the walls together

and hold the roof up,
and it's a long span,

so that's why a truss
works best.

I think that should
be more than sufficient.

We might as well do
something decorative
and something that looks good,

and Vinnie is
a great timber framer,

so it makes sense.

that wasn't hollowed out
to become the head.

of jacking and leveling,
some of the posts,

you know, had cracks,
so we replaced those

with six by six
pressure treated,

leveled things
out a little bit.

A new door.

Got inside,
tore out the paneling...

the carpeting,

tore off the roof
and went up with it.

You've got a new metal roof,
just to shed the snow

- and, you know, worry free.

New windows,

the porch was
in fairly decent shape,

so we didn't have
to do much there.
New paint.

To see it felt warmer
and a full second floor up,

we didn't think
that would be possible.

I'm glad we were
able to get it.

Like, I didn't wanna come in

There's little lights
coming from beneath them.

That's so much better
because you can see them

of dead space up above there,

you know, with
paneling so low,

we got up in there
and I was like, "Oh, man."

So, we were able to tear out
all the old framing

and we got Vinnie Birtwell,
a local, who does
timber framing,

came and made
these trusses for us.

You know, put those in place
of all the other collar ties,

just to cathedral
this space open

and then we were able
to bump the dormer in

up over the bedrooms
and bathroom

to get some additional
sleeping space back there.

-This is really nice.
-Yeah.

It's incredibly
more light in there.

I mean, it was a dark cave.

I mean, we loved it.
We loved it,

but it was like a dark cave
going in there,

and now it's just open
and airy and bright
and perfect, you know?

-We know you wanted
to enlarge the bathroom...
-Yeah.

...and get
a washer and dryer.

Washer and dryer,
oh, that's a gamechanger.

And we kinda brought
this space about three feet
into this room,

did a bigger shower in there,
all new plumbing.

- The two bedrooms.
- Yeah.

Love the pine.

And, you know, the loft
with loft ladder to that space
up there.

Wow.

Oh, this is excellent.

The transformation
from, like, attic to loft

is probably the biggest
change, I think.

Now, you'll have
a bedroom to sleep in.

This really works.

I just can't believe
how much space they were
able to make out of that.

Yeah, kitchen
stayed in the same place,

just a little configuration.

New stove, new refrigerator,
new cabinets.

Carried the floors
right throughout
into the porch area.

Look at this.

- Look at the couch.

This looks fantastic.

What a great porch
you have here.

Guys, look, we have
a table that can actually
fit all of us.

on that porch
