They've developed a program
that teaches teenagers

about how to be
an entrepreneur.

And part of the vision
is having
a tiny home community

for unhoused teenagers

and she is looking for us
to help build a tiny home.

This is why
we're in an RV today.

That's why
we're in the RV.

This is technically
a tiny home.

- But yeah, you know, homelessness is a huge issue.

But, no teenager
should have to worry about
where they're gonna sleep

-when they're going to school.

So, it's tough to hear that
but it's great to know
that we can help

and hopefully be a solution
to the problem.

Tell us a little bit
about CES.

We actually
started this project

when I was teaching
entrepreneurship business
up at the high school.

And, uh, the kids and I
decided to do like,
an analysis of the community

and we found
that teenage housing
was an issue.

And we decided
to take that on. So...

-Wow.
-That's great.

-Yeah.
-I know.

The situation
in Franklin County
is a little rough

because we lack a youth center
as well as a homeless shelter.

And what we're finding
is that unfortunately,

there are a lot of teenagers
in our area who face struggles
in their home life

and sometimes families
aren't able to give support
at that time,

for whatever the reason.

And then, the kids are left
to somewhat
fend for themselves

and ending up in places
where they shouldn't be.

And what do we
have here?

So, we got an eight foot
by 20 foot chassis.

And the chassis
is going to have a tiny home
put on it hopefully.

And it's just
gonna live here?

We're hoping to eventually
build a community here

with about eight or so
tiny homes,

where kids
can be self-sufficient
to a certain extent.

And you also have
a retail space in Farmington?

We do, we do.

We have a retail space
where kids are making things
that they can actually sell

-in the store
to earn some money.
-That's awesome.

And we're teaching them
all about how do you
have to market,

what's your business name.

-So--
-Customer service skills.

- Customer service skills too, yeah.
- -Yeah.

-Mmm-hmm.
-It's all pertinent stuff

in feeling good
about yourself.

- Right.
- Maybe I can come and tour it.

-You know, work with
some of them to, you know...

- Absolutely.

That would be amazing.

What we're hoping to do
is being able to offer
enough opportunities

for them to get a good feel
for what their passion is.

And we're hoping
to be able to start
a little bit of a movement.

- So this first one
is kind of a, you know--
- Prototype.

But just help
get the ball rolling,

help build momentum
to get this space developed

-into the community
that you envision.

And is there
any specifics

you're looking for
in the tiny home?

Um, I think just making it
more like home.

So, inside the tiny home,
we're hoping to have
a little kitchenette.

A bedroom, of course
and a bathroom.

And maybe just a little area
just for them to, you know,

have a friend over
and have a home.

Yeah and as far
as the exterior,

are you looking
for them all to match?

Do you have a certain,
like, color?

Do you have a certain,
you know, theme?

I think New England
would be really cool

and just, you know,
honoring the Yankee ingenuity

as well as the grit
that New Englanders have.

And so when are you
hoping to have
this first tiny home built?

So, um, by the start
of school, possibly?

- Okay.
- -So, how many weeks away is that?

- Ten.
- Ten.

Yeah, so I think
ten weeks

would put us right
at the beginning of September,

like you said,
right when school's beginning.

Do you have a budget
or an idea of how much

you want to put
into this project?

Okay, so
the typical cost for doing
one of these tiny homes

is right around $60,000.

And we have, right now,
about donated

probably right around
half of it.

So, we just have
to continue to raise money
for the rest of it.

Yeah, I mean, we also have
some businesses, builders,

tradesmen that we can
definitely reach out to,
companies.

Try and get
as much donated as well.

You know, obviously,
we'll, you know,
donate our labor and time.

We are meeting Ben.

and, uh, working with CES
to get this tiny home built
for homeless teenagers.

Yeah, so we got
your tiny home started here.

And your tiny home
is gonna be made

out of about 50,000
recycled plastic bottles.

- Really?
- Yeah.

So, we build, uh,
all of our modular units,

uh, out of, uh,
this technology.

It's called
the EDURA Building System.

Um, and this is all
recycled plastic bottles.

So, these are composite panels
we make right here.

Some of the advantages,
it's really light
but super strong.

Uh, because it's
recycled plastic bottles,

it'll never rot,
it'll never rust

and it has really good
insulating property.

We take bottles
out of the ocean
and out of the waste stream

and turn it into buildings.

-Darn.
-Interesting.

The fact that it's
recycled water bottles,

that's amazing
'cause I probably

-put a thousand of these
down myself.
-Yeah.

So, this is your framing,

your insulation,

your interior sheathing,
your exterior sheathing.

It's gonna be
the roof system as well?

It's the roof system as well.

So, because it's
all recycled plastic,

you don't have to worry about
any water penetration

or, uh, you know,
leaking or rotting
or anything like that.

It's almost like
that steel project we did
with the containers,

but way easier.

Except we don't have to do
the insulating or the framing.

So, that trailer
will show up in Monmouth...

- Fully assembled.
- Can we go to scene four?

So that's gonna give us
our shed roof, kinda?

-That roof pitch
up there, yeah?

And then, when you
turn it sideways, right,

now you're looking
at the inside.

At that point,
you guys will come in

and you're gonna start
adding your magic, right.

So, you add those pieces.

So, you're putting nailers down for us.

And then, you know,
you put the deck
for the bathroom.

- For the bathroom and plumbing.

Then you put up
your partitions.

You put up your loft spaces
for the, uh,
second-floor stuff.

it's gonna be weathertight.

We don't have to do
anything to the roof.

We can just finish it off
and make it comfortable
for whoever's living in it.

So, we got a tiny home
showing up today.

Really?

-Well, a shell of a tiny home.

For unhoused teenagers
for the CES.

But I was thinking
this would be a good spot
to have it dropped.

It's on a trailer.

So, they'll wheel it right in,
I say wheel it right here.

Close to the wood shop.

You know, it's too tall to get
under cover unfortunately.

Okay, so not that tiny.

Not that tiny,
but it's watertight.

-Yeah.
-You know, and once we get
the windows and doors in,

-we can work on site
on good days.

-We can tarp it off
if we need to.

After that,
we got some deliveries

from community businesses
that are helping donate
to the project.

So, we can store
the materials under there,

-so at least
that's under cover.

But, we'll have
the shell here, you know,

close to power,
close to everything we need.

we can work on it right here
and hopefully, you know,

you'll kind of take the lead
on this one.

It's been about three weeks
since we visited Ben

at the facilities
down in Woolwich.

Really it's not as little
as I expected.

And today, we are at
our lumber yard in Monmouth

where the tiny home shell
for CES is being delivered.

Great.

Last time we saw it,
it was a trailer frame

with a deck on it.

But, as the tiny home
was pulling into
the parking lot,

you know, it's a lot larger
than it looked when we
just stood one wall.

So, we're all excited to, uh,
see what they got.

Wow, that's crazy. It's big.

It's a big tiny house.

There's a height restriction
and a width restriction,

so that you can move it
up and down the roads
without having permits.

But even still,
it's very tall.

Yeah, so a loft here.

- Okay.
- Window here.

Window here.

Doorway there.

- I think a ladder to the loft on this side.
- -Okay.

But as soon as we
start closing everything in,

you get your loft in there,
that's gonna
make if feel lower.

And then, this bathroom
is going to be a step up

so that you can get
your plumbing and everything
underneath it.

You can get a bathroom,
that's gonna close it in.

We'll glue strapping
so that you can run wires
behind that.

And then, pine up the inside.

- Give it that cabin feel.
- Okay.

But, I think it's gonna
provide ample space
for anybody.

Wowser.

Yeah, so Bonita has been great

this whole program

off the ground
and just keeping it
running forward.

It's one of those issues
you hear about all the time.

We're donating
our labor.

And, you know,
as much material
as donated as possible.

Just, again, helps Bonita
the possibility of building
another one sooner.

We're thinking how do we
install these windows.

It's pretty simple.

Ben stopped by
just to, uh, show us
what they've worked on.

-So, we already cut this
front opening for you.

Left another one,
uh, so you guys
can have some fun too.

But, all you have to do,

'cause this is, um,
recycled plastic,
recycled PET,

you don't have to worry
about this rotting

or, you know, rusting,
degrading, anything like that.

So, literally, you don't need
flashing tape or anything.

Uh, you can just
install the window,
caulk around it,

um, seal for any
water intrusion and that's it.

Huh?

-Okay.
-Yeah.

They've got it
all locked together,
all fiber glassed together.

It's one solid shell.

And once those windows
are cut out and installed,

you have a entirely
waterproof box.

On the interior
of the tiny house,

we're gonna build
a bathroom space,

a kitchen, living area,
and a loft for sleeping.

Were there any windows
on this wall?

I can't remember.

- I believe there were--
- One?

Yeah, one.

-It's a big canvas.
-Yeah.

So, if that's getting
all covered

with some aluminum pre-formed
board and batten siding,

which I think
is gonna look super sharp,

do we need
to coat this with anything?

-Uh, no.
As long as you cover it.
-All right.

So, we just try
to protect it from UV.

- Um, so if you're covering it with that siding...
- -Okay.

And again, you can just
fasten it right to the wall.

The whole building's the stud.

Man, oh, man.

On the exterior
of the tiny house,

we're going
to cut out the rest
of the window openings

cover it with aluminum
board and batten siding

and paint the roof.

We'll have questions
coming along,

but you're not
going anywhere, so.

No, we're right down the road,

with whatever you need,
'cause this is, uh,

- this is a new way of building for you.

So, today I'm in Farmington
meeting the kids and Bonita

from the CES program,
the Makerspace.

This is where you guys
do all your arts and crafts?

The Makerspace is a store
where all the proceeds go
to helping out this program.

What are we
thinking today, guys?

We think we might
use those rocks to make
like a little terrarium.

Like, using this thing.

-Yeah.
-We can stuff 'em in there.

I think that would be cool
as a display

-in the tiny house.
-Mmm-hmm.

The kids had looked around
the spot where the tiny house
is gonna be parked

and they found,
you know, some rocks,

feathers, uh,
a cool antler from a deer.

And then, I feel like,
if we make a sign.

So, today we're taking
the stuff they found

and putting together
custom pieces that we can add
to the decor

for pops of color
and inspiration.

I think we should do something
with the Changemakers
on the sign.

Okay. So, what's
a Changemaker?

A CES Changemaker
is somebody that believes
in their community

and wants to do
something amazing for it

and lift other people up.

- Yes.
- I love it.

So, we settled
on two projects today.

Gonna sort of,
let that settle a bit.

The first one,
Jake found some rocks

that already had
some moss on 'em.

We're gonna make a terrarium.

Put this rock on top.

Second one,
we're gonna make
an inspirational sign

with the board they found,
saying, "Be the Change."

Looks good to me.

It's one of their slogans
so I thought it'd be perfect.

I think as a tiny house,

- so we need to use every space that we have.
- -Yeah.

-Mmm-hmm.
-So, I think if we use this,
put it on the side here

and then, we'll be able
to hang it up and use it also
as a coat rack.

-Yeah.
-I like it.

So, this sign
can also be a functioning
inspirational sign.

Oh, yeah, look.

Oh, yeah.

So, they have
all the toys here.
It's really fun.

Here we go. We're in business.

They have a stencil maker.

It's like if you went
to the dentist,
this is what they'd use.

- Yes.
- -I've never used a stencil maker.

So, as long as
we get it right along
where the letters are.

This is my favorite part,
so I'm gonna
do this part, okay?

Today, we're back
at the tiny home

and the first step
this morning,

Scotty and I
jack-leveled the tiny home.

Which was an essential step.

That is gonna give us
our plumbing level.

So, when we're going off
our, uh, measurements
for the walls,

our windows, the floor,
is levelled.

So we know that
our level lines,
our plumb lines inside

are gonna correspond
with the plumbness

and the levelness
of the outside.

And we're up
on the roof

and we're getting
it all painted.

We got Doug here
and we're gonna
raise the floor,

gonna make a platform,

so that Doug can get
all of the plumbing

and the drainage
underneath it.

Ooh!

So that we can
start framing walls.

And then,
we can figure out how to get
the siding on the building.

And then,
we just work our way.

This will have J-Channel
down bottom.

- The beauty of this is you don't need that stuff.
- -Right.

- So,
I'm gonna test it,
-Yup.

and see what it can do for us.

-I'll do mine first.
-Yes, sir.

Today, we are working
on the tiny home,

We got our starter strip here.

We cut it with the,
uh, grinder as you can see.
Left some marks.

So, uh, we decided this
is gonna be our test piece.
We're gonna redo it.

That is a roll
of space foam.

There's your space foam.

So my one official job
of the day was to go get

the reflective bubble wrap.

Hi. You're getting big.

Guys, can you tell me
what this is for?

Uh, this is
for the exterior siding.

Because it's such
a dark color.

Man, you feel
the reflective heat.

Yeah, you can.
We're gonna get sunburnt.

Jeez. Oh, it's burning!

What?

-You don't like the siding?
-It's bring, isn't it, Weesus?

So the way the siding
on the tiny house works is,

we put some foil insulation
on the back side

because it's such
a dark color.

To help with
a little bit more insulation.

Then you put
the first piece up.

Screw it on,

and repeat
till you get to the end.

Drop it right in, bruh.

Drop it right in, bruh.

Inside, we're doing a...

timber frame type loft system.

It's 8x8.

Yeah. It's just
a small, little loft.

Just enough to get
a bed and a mattress up there,

and give yourself
a warm place to fall asleep.

- Sweet.
- Yeah.

The loft frame is in
so that just needs
to be decked over.

We got one side
completely sided.

We've gotta plan
for the rest of it.

Sweet. Nice work.

Next up is to get
the electrician in here.

Once all
the wirings wrapped in,
we can start closing in walls

and it should, uh,
go together fairly quickly.

-Cool.

Yeah. Fantastic.

It's week seven now
at the tiny home.

Things are
coming along nicely.

Forty eight.

Electricals wrapped in.
Loft is sheaved over.

Doug is working on getting
the shower installed.

Jay and his team
are working on finishing up
the siding.

Last thing that needs
to happen is the door
needs to go in

so all walls can be sided.

- Yes.
- Okay?

The door is too short.

Okay.

Yup. Thing with the bat.
Right here. Door sets on that.

So, always
a learning experience
with a tiny home.

We're getting ready
to put the door in
that was donated.

So we can
finish siding the rest
of the building.

Then we found out
that the door's too short.

So Chase stopped by
with a plan.

The plan was put a piece
of pressure-treated down
on the bottom.

It's gonna raise the door up
and fill that gap at the top.

Then we're gonna put
a piece of metal flashing
on top to seal it up,

so we can trim all around it.

So, today's gonna be great.

We're finally
gonna get the door in.

Second time's a charm.

And then we can
finish up the siding.

Get the pocket door
going into the bathroom.

And then move on
to interior sheathing.

Drilling the pine at it.

Better get out of that spot.

From there,
we can move
on to flooring.

And finally get
the heat pump installed.

The heat pump is gonna act
as an HVAC system
for the tiny home.

To help keep it
warm in the winter
and cool in the summer.

So today I'm checking up
on the cabinets for
the tiny house.

These are way better
than I even pictured.

When we first met Bonita,

she told us she had a bunch
of companies already set up
to help us out with the build.

So she hooked us up
with John and his team.

Now we're more than happy
to jump in, to help out.

It was a short timeframe.

I promise
next time we work with you,

And he's gonna show me
what they've come up with.

Everything here,
these are all adjustable.
So with the limited space,

they can adjust those up
if they wanna put in,

you know, cans,

- if they wanna put their pots and pans.

And just the fact that
you can change the height,
I mean, that's key.

Yeah. So, literally,
reach underneath,

-there's two little clips.

you pull it right out.

That's what
makes it easy for...

And then these parts

literally, just twist 'em,
and pull 'em out.

...integrated a, uh,

- small drawer on the bottom of every one of 'em.

They really thought
about the fact that
we need to maximize

every bit of space
in this house,

and they did just that
with these cabinets.

got clogged

and it backed up
a lot of the sawdust inside.

It just can't handle

We got it all cleaned out
and cleaned up,

and then went on
with our day.

So my goal today
was just to get
a Murphy desk in there.

Chase is gonna put in
a little dining area for them.

But they need
a place for their books.

So I wanted to make
place where they can
lift up a desk...

- Do you need my help?

I love your company
but I don't need your help.
Is that fair?

...and use it
for studying and storing
their materials.

- You like that?
- I love it.

So that they
don't have to store
everything where they eat.

Yeah, so this
is the tiny house.

Yeah.

It's, uh,
we're awfully close
to having it finished.

We've been using
this rickety set of stairs

in the yard.
You know,
something we just found.

It'll be nice
to have a solid, you know,

just a set of stairs
to put right out

-in front of it or something.
-Yeah, definitely.

Tom and his grandson
stopped by and...

they want to donate
a nice metal set of stairs.

Handrails. Awesome.

Do we wanna go with,
like, a bar grating tread?

So that they don't
have to shovel it?

I would think.

Well, that takes
one thing off my punch list.

Yeah, so today's the day
we're giving the tiny house
back to Bonita.

it's almost level.

Chase and Ryan
were able to get it
up here this morning.

They're greeting
pretty much the same way
on the floor.

Yeah,
the right side is better.

So now my team
and I are ready
to go at it.

- You're good.
- Level.

Hey, there you go.

Eventually, there's gonna be
a bunch of tiny homes here.

So I wanted
to take advantage
of the outside.

All right. That's good,
that's good, that's good.

So everyone can, like,
kinda come together on
the picnic table and hang out.

- All right.
- Okay.

Okay.

So my main focus
on the inside was
just making sure

that I got things
that they were gonna
be able to use.

I wanted everything
to have a purpose.

Rather than
just for decorative purposes

but also for function.

I mean, come on.

-You nailed it!
-He did a good job, huh?

Holy smokes.

We had ten weeks
to get it completed.

Part of that
was Ben and his team
for doing their piece.

Attaching the unit
to the trailer frame

and getting
that delivered to us.

And then the final cost
on this tiny home was
probably $60,000.

We had a lot
of things donated though.

Yeah, I mean,
Bonita is a force.

She went out
to the community
and got donations.

and that day she would
have it ready for us.

This was a fun project.
It was different.

It's for a great cause.

And hopefully,

help out the community.

it jumpstarts the community

We had two little
entrepreneurs in the making.

One took care
of the lower level

and one took care
of the upper level, and...

- They did very good.

We had 30 volunteers
from the community
come together

and cleaned it up.

- You get things done.
- Yeah. We try.

Just like you.

Yeah.
So when we first met you here,

you know, it was
an overgrown site.

Francis, our landscaper,
came in, donated his time.

Smoothed out,
put a nice driveway,

nice landing pad
for the tiny home.

We took this trailer frame

and brought it
down to Warwick.
Built the shell.

You know, the aluminum
board and batten siding
on the exterior.

I think the color
really pops.

It does.

Built this nice
aluminum set of stairs
to get in.

It's got grates, so,
you know, it doesn't
track dirt, snow inside.

Yeah,
which is perfect.

And when
the tiny home moves,
they're easy

to pick up.
Move along with it.

Oh, my gosh. Love it.

And my team
and I came in this morning,

and we were
able to get in there
and get it all ready.

So, it's ready to go.

We're getting excited
for you to go in and
check it out.

Wow. Wow.
Trying to hold back
my tears.

I don't think
they understand
how much...

their involvement
has catapulted this.

Wow. Wow, wow, wow.

And thinking about
the journey that has happened

over the past
four or five years,

in trying to make this
become a reality for kids.

This is incredible.

Isn't this
stuff amazing?

You know,
decent size shower in there.

This is beautiful.

I might move in.

In fact,
we've all said
the same thing.

Just hook onto it and go.

I know.

Oh, my gosh, it's beautiful.

I mean,
the space is incredible.

Yeah,
a little loft space.

- Oh.
- Just to...

Oh, look
at the little clock!

It was nicer
than I could've
even imagined.

Oh. So cozy.

This is great.

I can't believe
in 160 square feet,

that that's a home.

You hit it
out of the park.

Yeah. And you know
what I like about it,
it's, you know,

it's small
but it does have
kinda of separate spaces.

You've got bathroom,

kitchen area, sleeping area,

living area back there.

We've got a desk where
you can leave your studies,

not have to take 'em down.

To eat,
if you have company over,
you got seating areas.

Fridge, the stove.

Your hot water heater's
under there.

Heat pumps up there.

You know, this place
is small enough
and well-insulated

that it should heat it,
no problem.

Well, shoes stores underneath.

- Uh...
- -Even a small closet on the end.

You know,
taking advantage of every
square inch of the space.

My word.

It is incredible. I mean...

the cabinet space alone.

- I'm jealous.
- Yeah.

I'm like I'm jealous
of the amount of storage.

This is fabulous.
You fit so much in there.

So well planned out
and just cozy, and home.

This is better
than my first apartment.

- Oh, yeah.
-This is.
This is way better

than my first apartment.

That was
the big thing is I didn't
want it to be a shed.

I wanted it
to be a home.

This is something, um...

kids can aspire
to have in their life.

-Yeah. Absolutely.
-At an affordable price.

And that... that happened.

So you must be
excited for your students
and your daughter to see this.

So let's head on out.
We'll get you some keys.

And we can call them up
and have them come over,
check it out.

- All right.

You know, this is gonna be...

changing someone's life and...

I can't wait to see
what the kids think.

I cannot wait
to see that.

It's amazing to see
what the community has done
to make this happen,

and embracing it. It's...

It's spectacular.

Yeah, I think it's fantastic.
It's great to see...

not only this getting built

for the community
and unhoused teenagers,

but, you know,
so much of it

made in Maine.
It would be great to see

these different communities
all over the state,
all over... All over.

We estimated
it was probably about
$60,000 to get this built.

You know, again,
luckily we have donated
time and labor

and businesses
donated materials.

We're able to get this
completed in ten weeks.

It's an awesome project.

And hopefully,
this is a start of many.
