We bought this place
about eight years ago

and it needed a lot of help

and we've really tried to do
some things,

but it's beyond our scope.

We're just trying to save it.

There aren't a lot of cottages

like this in Maine anymore.

People tear 'em down

and they put up
new modern places

and we're trying
to maintain the character.

To tear it down
would be horrible

'cause you couldn't get this
close to the water.

So many memories here
with our family

-and friends that we just...

want to keep the party going,

We have six kids. Yeah.

And we probably
have, without exaggerating,

15 to 20 little nieces
and nephews.

Coming here in the summertime

is the highlight
of their year.

Do you know
when the camp was built?

- We know it's the 1930s.

And we think the patios

were built and added on,
probably early '80s.

The camp was built in the '30s
you said so, you know,

we'll have to be cautious
and test for lead paint

because it was built before
1978 and just, you know,

make sure we do
everything safely

when we start
getting into demo.

But the roof line
has been an issue for us.

and it's just so shallow.

So we wanna actually open
the whole thing up

out into the front porch
and the back porch.

And I guess it would be really
great if the kitchen

could be pushed back
where the back porch is

just to have more

and I'm hoping
it can be opened up.

Make it feel bigger.

Maybe have a little loft
area in there.

We had put
a little bathroom in it

when we bought the place

and we would love
to have that

be a little bit bigger.

It is just teeny tiny.

And this is a seasonal place?

It's seasonal,

-but we use it every season.

and do ice fishing.

she wants to throw 'em out

and I'm thinking,

and bring 'em back

to throw it out on us.

we are wide open.

of the Bishop camp,

Brad and the guys
have finished demo

on the back porch.

There's an 8 by 8 beam
that's in pretty good shape.

We'll set that aside and see
if we can use it later.

The guys have started
jacking and leveling.

It was definitely wet
to start,

but they got everything

pucked, releveled, jacked.

everything's nice and level.

It's going nicely.

It's week four
at the Bishop camp

and the guys have
framed up a new platform

where the back porch
used to be.

Next step is to open up
the back wall

and install a carrying beam
that will help

support the weight
of the new addition.

Over the next week,
they'll frame up

the walls and the roof.

This will give
plenty of room to push back

the kitchen
and expand the bathroom.

It's week five
at Bishop camp.

The back condition
is all done.

On the front side, they've
got the floor deck down

and the walls
for the first floor.

So today we are going
to rip off the roof

to get our floor rafters
in for the new loft space.

186 and three-eighths.

So we're putting
in 8 by 8 hemlock beam

to support all the weight.

So we can open up this room

and then throw in our rafters

for the second floor loft.

It's brutally heavy.

So what we're doing
is we're gonna run

these new hemlock beams
in here,

set some new floor
joists for the, uh, loft

and get a little more
rigidity out of the ceiling.

And then what we're gonna do

is we're gonna create
a headed off

opening right here
for our access to the loft.

a new beam

in to carry the weight

So right now we're
just temporarily

supporting the existing roof

so that we can tear out
this old support,

the ridge line.

We can start framing up

for the new roof line.

as far as framing up the roof,

putting in the windows,

It's a little one,
it's in rough shape.

He's missing
an eyeball.

Some of his fins
have fallen Off.

It's like he's seen
better days.

So normally,
on something like this,

what I would do is I would
take this head right here off

and replace
with an artificial head.

- Obviously, a lot smaller.

Replace that
and I'd replace his fins, too.

And then what about
the eyeball?

Where do you get
fish eyeballs?

So I order the eyes.

These are two big fish, fish

- but they're a glass eye.
- Oh.

I come in
and put 'em in there

and you do the epoxy work
around it.

I strip all this paint off
and I'd repaint it.

There's probably 20,
25 different colors

that'll go into that.

You know, cats
have nine lives.

Maybe fish have two or three.

-Fred.
-He's gonna be happy.

It's week nine
at the Bishop camp

and I got invited
to come over and hang out.

Over the last couple days,

Jake's given
the camp a coat of stain

and painted
the trim of green.

We've had a bunch of wet,
rainy weather lately

so we're gonna try
to get the roof on.

There's one pitch
on the front,

but with this
additionally built in,

comes in a different pitch.

So now we have a valley.

So we have Brad right there's

bringing
the two valleys together.

Most of the times we do roofs,
there's no cuts on the bottom,

it's just square,
square, square.

You put a panel up, put a
panel up, put a panel up.

These you have to cut out
a square the whole time

'cause you gotta get the slope
going up each valley.

at the Bishop Camp.

Jedi and Brad are working
on the waterside steps.

The exterior
is pretty much wrapped up,

siding is done.

And on the inside,
it's looking good.

The floors are going in.

Dixie's putting
in kitchen cabinets,

windows, walls
are pretty much closed in.

It's just flooring down here

and a little bit of closing in
up in the loft.

So today we are installing
the kitchen cabinet.

What we're doing

is shimming the bottom
three-quarters of an inch,

which is the thickness
of the floor.

So basically, the cabinets
will be like they're sitting

on top of the floor.

We don't have to wait
for the floor to go down.

So it's gonna save us
a little bit of time.

Woo. That was a close one,

The Bishops have
their fishing poles
kinda just everywhere

and I am here to make
a fishing pole rack.

So I thought
it would just be nice

to have one place
where they can just put them,

where they can maintain them

and then trace it out,

I made seven little slots,

and then from there,
after I traced it out,

I marked it
on the other piece of wood

and then was able to go
and put the template down

where I'd marked it

so that they would match
on both sides.

We'll cut this out.

and adds it at the backboard.

And then Dixie and I

I was kind of holding him

because I wanted
to surprise the guys

and I hit his fin

knocked it off.

I was showing the guys,

I kind of noticed
that he was missing a fin.

It was in good shape.

The Bishops had $80,000
in 12 weeks

to get this cabin renovated.

They were looking
for more space,

an addition off the front,
off the back,

larger bathroom, more windows,

looking out over the water,

lot space
for additional sleeping,

and try and keep as much

of the wood interior
as possible.

you know, first thing
we did came in here,

we tore off that front porch,

we tore off the back porch.

Jacked and leveled the camp
and rebuilt from there.

-Amazing.
-You know, we went

with this natural
eastern white pine siding,

nice golden brown stain.

New windows across
the front, new roof,

new side entrance here.

-I love it. That is so great.
-He nailed it.

So when we first got into it,

you know, it was built
before 1978,

so we tested for lead.

We did find a few spots
where there's lead,

but we followed EPA
regulations and guidelines

to make sure we dealt
with it properly.

So it's all good to go.

We notice all your fishing
poles lying around,

so you walk around
to the other side of the camp.

- Oh, hey.
- -So, this is awesome.

-I love it.
-You don't know how
many times we cooked

over fishing poles.

This is great.
We love kids.

This is what this
is all about.

But let me tell you,
they lay 'em everywhere.

that was very nice.

This is functional.

Having a really truly

functional bathroom
is important.

You try
to get in the shower,

the shower curtain
would like stick to you

and it was kind of gross.

Just having that
expanded bathroom

makes it a much more
pleasant experience.

So when we first started,

You were looking
to make more space,

really take advantage
of the water view

on the lakeside,
loft, sleeping space.

I think our work here is done.

We just have
to hand the keys back.

We have a large
blended family,

lots of kids,
lots of nieces, nephews,

and we didn't buy
this place just for us.

We truly bought this for them.

And so my hope and wish

is that we can have them
continue to come.

And the camp
was really falling down

and I just don't think

that it would've lasted
another 10 years.

So by having the Maine
Cabin Masters come in

and do what they did,

I now know
that this thing is preserved

not just for now,
but for the future.

It's just incredible.
