Yup. There's electricity,
there's a well, uh,
and septic.

to the dome?

Well, we're looking
to have a lot done actually.

The whole outside
needs to be taken off

and hoping to get
architectural shingles

and, um, we need
a new front entrance

and a new back exit.

Looking to get
maybe French doors
out the back

so we can have
a nice, um, opening.

Some dormant windows.

And this decking all gone
and something, you know,
little better.

And on the inside,

there's two bedrooms upstairs,
but the wall that's between
'em is kinda funky.

Yeah, so, something
with the bedrooms
to separate them better.

- And then, we're looking to get the kitchen done.

The bathroom,
we did the floor ourselves,

but we didn't
finish the bathroom.

- So it needs a shower.
- Okay.

So, how much do you have
to put in to this project?

Well, we're looking to put
about $60,000 in.

And when are you looking
to get this work done?

We're hoping
to get it done in about
three months or so.

So we can enjoy the summer
a little bit here.

at the dome, we're
gonna rip out

all the rot at the base
of the structure.

New deck, new front entrance,

nice, big French doors.

Put in dormant windows
that open up

for better air flow
and to bring in more light.

And add architectural shingles
all around to give it
a much better look.

Well, I've seen
geodesic dome plans

where you build triangles
and lock them together
with some sort of connector

so that they're
their own separate piece.

And then you can connect
or disconnect them
however you want.

But these are all locked
on each side as one.

Just the way it was built,
it's super custom.

Each strat or
whatever you wanna call it,
locks together on all ends.

So we just have to be careful
about what we pull out

because we don't
want the whole thing
to collapse on us.

On the interior
of the dome, we're gonna
have to re-support it

and make it stable,
insulate it.

New windows
that open and close.

New kitchen,
update the bathroom
with a standing shower.

of the spiral staircase,

and built a new one
for easier access.

And build a wall
in between the two bedrooms
upstairs for more privacy.

I think we could
get our guys in here,

The goal today is to try and get these decks stripped back.

So we can get
right up close to it,
see what's going on.

of 2x6s we set aside
first thing.

We can cut out temporarily.

- Build a solid, couple, two or three of 'em together.

So that we can replace
all the rot down below,

and then, figure out
a way to reframe
in order to get

walls in there,
to put real doors,
real windows that open.

Not just, you know,
glass triangles.

- And start conventional framing straight up.

That's where it takes you.

And so,
it's basically from that one
to this one, right?

Insulate behind it.

Box out all windows.

and then you can close it
in properly.

So what are you
gonna do on the outside?

I think once we get going,
the framing will be fine.

I'm sure you'd
get into weird angles.

But it's all wood,
it's all angles.

I've got confidence
we can figure that out.

It's more the exterior
that's kind of the unknown.

This is something
we've never dealt with. So...

We're definitely gonna
bring in somebody who knows...

who's an expert on it
and can do it right.

It was good
having everybody here.

We got that 30-yard
dumpster full very quickly.

It's emptied out.
It's cleaned out around it.

Now we just need
the sun to come out,
dry the place out,

and then we can
start figuring out
the rebuild.

'cause it's... we're gonna
have to get very creative.

We've had
some good weather.
Things have dried out.

So we're getting
started on the interior.

We've got the crew
getting rid of as much

as the old spray foam
as they can.

And replacing
all of the rotted sills
down below.

in the bathroom taking
apart the old tub.

So we can
give them a stand up shower.

And then, once we get
all of the existing framing
bracing supported...

...we can start
framing out our new walls.

I mean, how deep
is it saturated with
all the moisture?

I don't know.

The next step
really is to get kind of
a spray foam expert in here

to kind of let us know
what's possible, what are
the limitations of spray foam.

It needs to have
a waterproof membrane

- on the outside.
- It does.

And how we're gonna
deal with the exterior.

You want anything
with a shingle?

I don't know.

This one definitely is gonna be a challenge.

Today we're here at the dome,
it's about week three.

and replaced all the rot.

We went through
and we did a plumb wall
all the way around

so we could install
our windows and doors
to that plumb wall.

Got it all anchored
to the concrete.

So today we're just working
on framing and door openings.

And windows.

And we have a skylight
going in so we can get
some more light in there.

So Chase and I are back
at the fry dome.

We decided to meet
our buddy, Jay Cook.

I was just trying
to apologize for getting us
into this build,

but it's gonna be awesome.

He's an expert
in all things spray foam

and we need to figure out
what we're gonna do
with the exterior.

So, hopefully, Jay
can save my butt,
to be honest with you.

- You think so?
- You hope so.

So this place
is built in the '70s.

It's super
asymmetrical, and...

It looks like
they coated it with foam,

coated it with some sort
of waterproofing membrane.

Concrete on top of that

- and paint on top of that.
- Sure.

- And a tarp.
- And a tarp.

- Tarp.
- The homeowners...

they love the, like,
asphalt shingle look of it.

Yeah, but he wanted...
he wanted dormant windows

and he wanted
light everywhere.

Of course
you said yes.

Of course I said yes.

That's a different story.
We're here in the now.

But it's just
not possible on this one.

You're really pigeonholed
in what you can do
I think. Yeah.

That's what
we found out pretty quick.

Sure, sure.

But, yes, it's spray foamed
on the exterior.

I mean, honestly, I think
spray foam would be
your best option here.

It's, uh, three-pound
closed-cell foam,
which could be the base layer

of insulation
around the whole
dome structure...

When you say
three pounds, what do
you mean by that?

So-so there's
different, uh, closed-cells,
uh, foams you can use.

Two-pound is usually
the stuff we use on the
inside of camps, right?

Three-pound is a denser...
has a higher
uh, strength.

It's used
for exterior applications.

Mostly commercial flat roofs.

And when you
use closed-cell
versus open-cell,

can you describe that to us?

Open-cell is,
uh, air permeable,
can absorb water.

- We don't want that.
- -But I wouldn't consider

using open-cell,
specially on the exterior.

You need that
closed-cell structure
for condensation issues

and it has insulation
all the way around.

No breaks
in the insulation.

So, at this point,
what do we need to do
to prep it?

Well, the first thing
we gotta do is we gotta kinda

take-off all that loose stuff
that's kinda hanging on.

- Yeah.
- -All those little bits of stucco and stuff like that.

So we can have just a good
substrate that we can spray
to, that's kinda critical.

As far
as weatherwise...

- Pray for...
70 degrees and sunny.
-Pray for... Got it.

Well, I appreciate you coming down.

- a overall price, but...

be insulation inside,
insulation outside,

and then, it's gonna
be coated, so that's

I'm at the dome camp, and...

this dome has been
an amazing project

and it's also
been an amazing
learning experience.

Yeah. Normally, we don't,
uh, have the camp owners
come in midway, but...

we just ran
into so many issues

and we just wanna kinda
run everything by you to
make sure you're okay with it.

Yeah, you know,
our biggest concern is
what to do on the outside

and how to do it correctly.

To do it correctly,
we got a quote from Jay Cook,
our spray foam guy,

of almost $50,000.

So, we made the call.

where it is.

The biggest thing to me
is Bruce had all these
beautiful, amazing ideas

and drawings.
He did so much research about

roof systems and windows,
and big dormers,

and the whole thing
covered in asphalt shingles.

Structurally, we knew
we couldn't do that.

So, we wanna be
on the same page.

We don't wanna
let anyone down.

Where do you wanna start?

But I'll tell ya,
I'm nervous, you know.

Bruce is probably one
of my favorite homeowners,
being a Deadhead

and for other reasons,
you know.

We've come
a long way, guys,

and we still got a long,
long way to go.

I want them to be happy.
So, I'm just...

Hope this comes up,
I hope they see

and know that
we're gonna make
this amazing.

But it might not
just be exactly
what they picture.

when we first started demo,
we got in some of the walls

and the lower sills
were rotted out.

Ended up replacing the sills
with pressure-treated 6x6's.

You can see those cracks
in the spray foam that go
right to the outside.

We've stripped off
any rotten interior
sheathing boards.

Framed in
as much of the original
geodesic dome as we could.

And then, built these
supporting walls to help
transfer the weight

and stabilize everything.
You know, because...

as it shift... as it rotted
and it kind of settled,

things shifted
and everything. So...

I think we've got that...

-under control.
-Cool.

And it also
gives us room to put
more insulation into

these walls with spray foam.

And then, on the exterior,
we'll do spray foam as well.

Our spray foam expert,
you know, he's gonna come in,

like, an inch on the outside
with closed cell,

and that's gonna get coated
with a polyurea.

You know,
it'll be an additional
$50,000 cost,

but we just wanted...
we wanted you to see it

just to make sure you're okay
with where things are at,

just because, you know,
it doesn't necessarily...

isn't what you envisioned,
but it's kind of what
the building

has dictated can be done.

-I think that's the most
concise way to put it.

That was kind of crazy.

But I've done some research
and the spray foam
is gonna be nice

because it'll be waterproof
and last for many, many years.

So what are you thinking
timeframe now, actually?

Our goal is,

if everything stays
on schedule, if weather
does cooperate,

- we just finished up this round.

Our next round,
we're hoping to finish
end of September.

- So maybe a few weeks.

On next year's dome,
we're still gonna have

windows and doors
that open up
and a new deck.

But instead of
architectural shingles,

we're gonna do
a spray foam application

that ensures the camp
is insulated and watertight.

working on windows.

of the framing on the inside.

So wintertime,
it will be nice and warm,

summertime, it will be nice
and dry and cool.

for exterior treatment.

that canvas tarp?

we have to knock off
as much loose stucco
as we can,

and then try and clean off
as much of the lichen,

and just scuff the surface
off everything else
so it adheres to it.

You know, we're not even
to the midpoint yet
of this build.

This is a long one.
It's gonna be about 15 weeks.

Start chipping away.

Probably, we start low
and work our way
right around.

So we got a lot of work to do.

of closed cell foam,

and then put this new
spray over that's gonna
make it bulletproof,

It's week eight
up here at the dome
and it's a big week.

The guys are taking down
the rest of the tarp

so we can prep it
and get spray foaming.

What they're gonna do it
take a three pound
closed cell spray foam.

It's high-strength,
high-density material,

and it's a great waterproofer
and insulator.

Then they're gonna take
a polyurea coating

which actually comes out
a little tan in color.

But over time,
it's gonna fade
to a more neutral color.

It's gonna help the dome
blend in the landscape.

I think that Rebecca and Bruce
are really gonna love it
in the long run.

And when that dries,
we've got the guys inside
working on sheathing.

- How does that fit?
- I like it.

And building out
the wall to separate
the two bedrooms upstairs.

Doug is in the bathroom
getting the stand up shower
put together.

And we're finally gonna get
the decking delivered
so we can get working on that.

So we were able to get
these pre-stained deck boards,

which is great
because they are all set
and ready to be installed.

It's gonna save us
a bunch of time
not having to stain them

and wait for them to dry.

Once the decking is done,
we'll be able to finish
the windows and doors.

we should be able to give it

So the first process is
heating up the glass.

have been closed in
with pine.

Exterior's all sealed up.
This place is watertight.

are installed, trimmed out.

The kitchen is going to be

All that really
needs to happen downstairs

is some trim,
paint the floors,

and finish off the staircase.

Up here, we've got
new skylight windows,

open and close,
better ventilation,
better light.

And then, this divider wall
for the two sleeping areas
goes to the ceiling.

Door's gonna go in here
to give the space
a little bit more privacy.

Right now, working on doing
some wainscoting
in the bathroom.

A little bit
of trimming there,

gonna get that bathroom
all tied up and finished up.

Next to the reveal,
we'll coat that and paint it.

It depends on whose autograph

a 15-week
and a $110,000-project.

Yeah, the first week
was very challenging

and, you know,
as we got into it

you know, we saw
it was hiding
a lot of secrets.

T he lower supports
were all rotted out.

You know, there were
the cracks on the outside.

Insects had gotten into it,
animals had gotten under it.

Everything attached
to the dome structure
to the concrete was rotted.

And not to mention,
just the whole transformation
of the dome itself.

Yeah,
it's so much better.

I think that
doing the exterior,

you know,
cost a lot more money
to get it done right

so that's it's gonna be

It was kind of
like a closet before,

and now it feels

so just getting everything
peeled back

and seeing
what we were working with
was a huge challenge.

And then, it was a matter of

figuring out
what could be saved,
what couldn't,

how to support
the second floor.

So we stripped back
as much as we could.

We put in new 4x6
pressure-treated sills,

locked those back
to the foundation,

so that we could tie the walls
so it's all held together.

Jay Cook, again, came in
and spray foamed
the interiors,

the new kitchen,
finished off the bathroom,

new windows, new doors.

- It was all out of whack.
- -Yeah.

-It needed to go.
-There was nothing right
about the dome.

- So opening it up...
- -Yeah, it's much more functional now.

Yeah.

It's absolutely stunning.

It's solid.

some custom glasses

I saw a lot of Dead shows
in 1979

till the end
of the original Grateful Dead,

and I love everything
about the tie-dye
and the colors and the music

with those glasses.
Just the uniqueness
and the hand-blown...

we were very nervous

It was a challenge
but, in the end,
we're very happy

and glad that you guys
are happy.

So my project doesn't go
against Chase's average.
