That's my son right there.

I looked up in the window and I
saw a young man standing there.

Two weeks ago he was killed
in motorcycle accident.

In that moment,
I was truly scared.

-No, no, no, no, no.
[ gunshot ]

Time of death, 10:04.

No!

Man: I saw its shadow
go across the wall.

I knew for sure
that I was looking at something

Not of this world.

A person who just
absolutely disappeared.

My vehicle was filled with this
intense dark energy.

♪♪

[ screams ]

[ siren wailing ]

-Hello? Oh, my god.
-911.

Man:
Please state your emergency.

-I think it's a --
[ growls ]

[ gun cocks, gunshot ]

[ screams ]

Man: [ deep voice ]
what are you waiting for?

Narrator: Responding to the 911
call is deputy lori martinez,

A five-year veteran
of the sheriff's department.

Ever since I was 5 years old,

I've always wanted to be
in law enforcement.

It was always something within
me since I can remember.

The majority of the crimes

That we would get were
burglaries to homes, to cars.

Narrator: But this call is of
a much different nature.

Martinez:
This was a very serious call.

A husband had just found out
that his wife

Was cheating on him.

And he saw his wife
and the boyfriend,

And he shot a few times.

And then continued driving.

Narrator: With a dangerous
armed man on the loose,

All units are immediately
dispatched to comb the area.

It's crucial they find
and disarm the shooter

Before he strikes again.

Martinez:
They knew who it was.

And they gave us
the direction of travel.

Narrator:
As she follows his trail,

The officer receives a call.

Woman: All units, all units,
suspect contained in alley,

Bridgeville and fraiser.

Near location. On my way.

Narrator:
The man has been cornered

In a densely populated
neighborhood.

The city police
actually spotted him.

And they conducted
a traffic stop on him.

[ siren wailing ]

When I arrived on scene...

Put the gun down.

Martinez: ...And I could see
it's pretty much a standoff.

Narrator:
But before joining the others,

The deputy sheriff receives

A vital piece of information
on the shooter.

[ police radio chatter ]

[ gunshots ]

He had actually missed
his target.

Everybody was okay.

With the emotions
he was feeling,

All he knows is he saw
everybody hit the ground.

He thought he killed somebody.

And he had nothing to live for.

Just want to take it easy.
We're just gonna have a talk.

Get back!

Narrator: She tries to
communicate with the shooter.

I tried to let him know
that he did not harm anyone.

That the crime wasn't as bad
as he thought it was.

You don't have to do this.

Put the gun down.

-Hey!
-You have to do it.

-You don't understand.
-Come on.

You don't understand.

Let's just have
a conversation, okay?

[ deep voice ] do it!

Narrator:
But for the half-crazed man

Riddled with guilt,

The time for talking is over.

What are you waiting for?

Just the look on his face was,
"okay, this is over."

What are you waiting for?

No.

[ gunshot ]

Narrator:
It's a tragedy officer martinez

Knows could've been avoided.

Martinez:
You just think to yourself,

"man, he didn't
have to do that."

He just ended his life
for no reason.

And you feel
really sad for him.

As I'm typing my report,

I just felt very uneasy.

I tried to shake it off, like,
"okay, it's just me."

♪♪

And then suddenly,

My interior light
started dimming.

So did my dashboard lights,
started dimming.

The hair stood up
on the back of my neck.

♪♪

I suddenly notice that
my computer screen

Was going in and out.

My radio started playing
some kind of static.

It was changing channels
by itself.

What the hell is going on?

Whenever there's a traumatic
incident like a suicide,

You've got a lot
of unresolved emotions

That are just hanging
in that space

And that can trigger
a lot of different activity.

It can actually
affect vehicles.

It can affect electronics...

Hello? Hello?

Hello, hello?

Knudsen: ...And phones and all
sorts of different things.

Narrator: The officer feels
the air in the car

Compressing around her.

My ears started to pop as if
the pressure inside my car

Suddenly changed.

♪♪

Man: [ deep voice ]
she's no good for you.

For you.
No, she's no good for you.

♪♪

At the moment,
I was pretty terrified.

No, no, no. No, no, no.

Narrator: After witnessing a man
take his own life...

[ gunshot ]

...Deputy sheriff
lori martinez returns

To a vehicles gone haywire
and feels that someone

Or something
has crawled inside with her.

What the hell is going on?

My vehicle was filled
with this intense dark energy.

Come on.

I just instantly felt like
I was no longer alone.

♪♪

Narrator: In the aftermath
of the tragedy,

She feels her eyes and mind are
being tricked by her emotions.

There was nothing there.
But I could feel it.

It was almost like the air
was thick with emotion, anger.

♪♪

Nothing seemed to make sense
scientifically.

And it hit me.

It's got to be this guy.

[ deep voice ] do it!

It's got to be this guy
who just shot himself.

I was the last person he saw,
the last person he looked at...

[ gunshot ]

...Before he ended his life.

And I was also the last person
on the scene.

I was it. It was just me.

Narrator: She struggles to
accept that she might actually

Be dealing with
a ghost of the shooter.

[ exhales ]

The person in this case

Had a very dark mental state
at the time.

Sometimes that disfunction
can actually manifest

As an entity
that's outside of themselves.

It can be really frightening.

And it can be very malicious.

At the moment,
I started to feel threatened.

I just started talking to him.

I asked him several times
to get out of my car.

♪♪

Then I actually said,
"what do you want from me?"

Narrator:
But her questions only served

To further aggravate
the entity.

♪♪

I started thinking,
"okay, if this doesn't end soon,

"this is going to affect my job.

"how can I continue to do my job

While he's continuing to effect
my equipment and my car."

So I had to get him out somehow.

How can I get this guy
out of my car?

[ deep voice ]
come on. Do it.

Martinez:
And then it hit me.

He wants to go home.

Man: Suspect is armed.

Martinez: We stopped him
from where he was going,

Where he wanted to be.

[ police radio chatter ]

So I decided to put my car
in drive.

[ engine starts ]

And I drove straight
to his house.

Oftentimes entities
will gravitate to places

That they really loved
and that they felt comfortable.

So home is a frequent area
where they will return to

Or check in on
after they've passed away.

Martinez: I was desperate.

I'm thinking, you know,
"I'm gonna try this.

"I'll drive to his house.

Maybe hopefully that'll work."

Narrator:
Deputy sheriff martinez races

Through the city streets

At the mercy of her
potentially deadly cargo.

Whenever we get paranormal
activity like this

In a vehicle,
it's always of concern

Because you're driving
a 5,000 pound vehicle.

I know who you are.

If you've got a distraction
that's going on in your space,

Not only can you
injure yourself

But you can injure
the people around you.

I kept feeling
this energy on me.

It was almost like
pressing on me.

And it was getting worse.

[ growling ]

And I parked in front
of his house.

And I said, "you're home."

We're here.

Please just get out of my car.

[ breathing heavily ]

[ breathing stops ]

[ inhales deeply,
exhales slowly ]

As soon as I said,
"get out of my car,"

Suddenly my computer
popped back up again.

Everything went back
to normal again.

[ doorbell rings ]

And that heavy feeling
that I had inside the car

That was pressing on me,
it was suddenly gone.

♪♪

He was out of my car,
finally.

And that's when I realized,
that's what he wanted.

He wanted to go home.

[ engine starts ]

After he got out,

I put my car in drive,
and I got out of there.

I did not hang around.

I went as far away as I could.

♪♪

It respected her decision
to ask it to leave.

♪♪

I have not gone back over
in that area since then.

And I won't.
I won't go back by that house.

Man: You think he might still be
in that house?

He could very well still be
in that house.

[ man screams ]

An experience like this

Really makes you question

What happens after you die.

Man: Aah!

[ line ringing ]

Narrator: In rural connecticut,
rookie police officer

Kurt knapp rushes to respond
to an emergency call.

Man:
Dispatch to car 32, come in.

Go for car 32.

We've got a 459...

Narrator: Surprisingly,
the call has come from

The area's most affluent
neighborhood.

Copy that. I'm on my way.

I had been a military policeman
in the marine corps

For four years and a civilian
policeman for two years.

Police work can be
completely quiet for five hours

And then suddenly
it's high-energy,

High-adrenaline,
panic, armed robbery,

Or something that
you have to respond to.

Narrator:
All the officer really knows

Is that the call recorded

An unwanted person
on the premises.

Knapp: An unwanted person
can mean a lot of things.

These are some of the most
risky things

That a police officer
can walk into

'cause you really don't know
what is happening in there,

If there's been a fight, if
there's firearms in the house.

You try not to prejudge
the situation.

You really have to be careful.

Narrator: Strangely,
the house is dead quiet.

There's no sign of the man
who placed the call

Or any signs
of an obvious emergency.

There's no one yelling,
no one cursing, no one fighting,

No one threatening
to beat somebody else up.

Narrator: But when he gets to
the back of the house,

He finally sees a sign of life.

He was very confused,
very frustrated,

Almost like he wished
he hadn't called.

Kurt: Sir, is someone
inside the house?

Knapp: I said, "you really
have to help me here.

You have to tell me
what's going on."

Narrator: But the man seems
reluctant to share

Whatever it is
that's troubling him.

I didn't know how really
to respond to this

Because it was not
a typical scene by any means.

[ glass shatters ]

Narrator: The silence is finally
broken by activity

Inside the house.

I looked up in the window and I
saw a young man standing there.

He was about 18 or 20.

He had kind of a beatles
haircut, wearing a t-shirt.

♪♪

And I said, "well,
can I go in the house?"

All right, I'm gonna go in
and talk to him.

He said, "well, you won't be
able to do that because

When you go up
there he disappears."

Now, I'm thinking either
this guy is drunk

Or he's having
some kind of delusion.

[ glass thuds ]

♪♪

Narrator: Unable to get anything
further from the man,

The officer decides to go
and find his own answers.

Hello? Police.

Knapp: I went upstairs.

Kurt: I just want to ask you
some questions.

I began to think about what time
of call it might be.

You know, drugs had
permeated the area.

Hello?

There was usual kids stealing
things or vandalizing property.

♪♪

And there was no one there,

Which kind of startled me

Because obviously, I had seen
someone up there.

♪♪

♪♪

There was no indication

That anyone had been
in the room for quite a while.

♪♪

I looked in the closets.

I looked under the bed.

I searched the rest
of the upstairs --

The other bedrooms.

No one there.

And I'd just clearly
seen someone

In the window
when I was down below.

It kind of freaked me out

Because I had no idea
where he went.

♪♪

Went back downstairs.

Narrator:
The officer has no idea where

The teen
could have gone off to.

Just like the man outside
had warned him,

He has simply disappeared.

At that point, I really was
at a loss at what to do

Because obviously
there's nobody up here.

There's nobody in the house.
There's nobody upstairs.

There's nobody anywhere
in the house.

[ object thuds ]

Narrator: A sudden noise
leads him back upstairs.

♪♪

When I got in that room,
I found there was nothing.

There was no one in there.

Narrator: But the room suddenly
fills with a bitter cold.

♪♪

Knapp: Honestly, it sent
a chill down my spine.

It's almost like you expect
rod serling

To come stepping
around the corner and saying,

"this makes sense
in the twilight zone."

♪♪

Narrator: The cold gives way to
something much more disturbing.

♪♪

Man: Aah!

And I saw a young man
standing there.

It seemed like he wanted
to tell me something.

Narrator: Nothing of
the officer's training

Can explain
what he's just seen.

It was terrifying.

Narrator:
When officer kurt knapp

Arrives at the location
of a possible home invasion,

He encounters
an uncooperative homeowner...

♪♪

...Rooms that suddenly turn
icy cold and turbulent

And a mysterious teenage
that seems to appear

And disappear out of thin air.

Typically when we find that
things are thrown at people,

It's some type of warning either
a person may be in danger

And a spirit is trying
to remove them from an area,

Or that spirit
just does not want them

In their physical space.

Narrator: Unable to make sense
of anything that's happening,

The officer decides to leave.

In that moment,
I was truly scared.

Narrator: It's time
for the homeowner

To give him
some straight answers.

Knapp: I walked over
and asked the man,

"what's going on?"

He started to stammer
and stutter

And he looked confused,

Hesitant to even say anything.

And finally he blurted out...

That's my son up
there in the window.

Straight a student,
captain of the football team.

♪♪

What about him?

Finally he said, "he's dead."

And I kind of
stepped back said,

"come on. Now, what's really
happening here?"

He said, "no, no, no.
Believe me.

He died two weeks ago
in a motorcycle accident."

♪♪

Narrator: Dismissing
the old man as drunk,

Officer knapp decides to have
a talk with the young man.

♪♪

♪♪

But when he gets to where
he saw him last,

The teen has once
again vanished.

♪♪

There was obviously things
in there that belonged

To an 18 or 20-year-old,

A guitar, record albums,
things like that.

This is just too weird.

I searched everywhere.

I looked every possible place
that someone could hide.

I even thought about searching
the walls for a hidden door,

A trap door, anything.

There was just no way
he could've left the upstairs

Without me seeing him.

The young man was not there,

And I had no answers
as to why he wasn't.

Narrator: Unable to find
a rational explanation,

The officer is forced to come
to a terrifying conclusion.

He truly is in the presence
of a ghost.

Knapp: I had just
clearly seen someone.

It was really startling

That this person had just
absolutely disappeared.

Seeing a spirit, ghost,

Whatever you want to call it
to any rational person,

This is a terrifying
experience.

Went back downstairs,
talked to the father again.

And I said, "look, I don't know
what to tell you.

"I mean I understand
that you're seeing this.

"I saw it.

"but as a police officer,

This is kind of out
of our area of expertise."

♪♪

"I honestly don't know
what to do.

"I think if you're
a religious person,

"you need to talk to you
minister, your priest,

"whatever because really

This is not a police issue."

And he accepted that.

And he said, "I was so hesitant
when you got here

"to even tell you
what was going on.

But thank you for coming."

Narrator: Satisfied the man is
in no physical danger,

Officer knapp heads back
to the police station

Still questioning
everything that he's witnessed.

There was a a part of me
that said,

"still, this is a hoax.
This guy's crazy.

"there's something wrong here,
all right?

This couldn't possible be real."

Narrator:
Once at the station,

He goes searching
for a rational explanation.

Knapp:
You want this to be resolved.

And it wasn't being resolved.

♪♪

We checked the records.

Narrator: His search
leads him to a report

Of a recent motorcycle accident
in the area.

♪♪

♪♪

The victim, the same young man
he saw in the house.

♪♪

Two weeks before,

His son had been killed
in a motorcycle accident.

♪♪

See a photo of him
and I realized

That this was the same face

That I saw
staring out of the window

Really sent chills
down my spine.

♪♪

Many cases when a person dies,
they decide to linger behind.

And that could be for a variety
of different reasons.

Sometimes, the person doesn't
even realize they're dead.

Other times, there's something
connecting them here.

They're not ready to move on.

They quite often go to that
place that they feel is safe.

♪♪

Narrator:
The officer realizes that

By choosing to return home,

The dead son's homecoming
was both frightening

And heartbreaking
for his father.

Strangely enough, having
an experience and encountering

Someone that you love
doesn't mean it won't be

One of the most
terrifying experiences

Of your life.

Man: How much did you share
of this tale

With your colleagues at work?

I told everybody.

I thought it was an important
story to tell,

That there are things
in police work and life

In general
that don't fit into the box.

There are things that happen
that we just don't understand.

And we probably may never
have an answer for.

Everything's gonna be fine.

-Oh.

Where are you, mum?

Help! Help!

I've been calling you all day.

[ crying, whimpering ]

Mum?

Winder: Copy that.
We're on our way.

Narrator:
Emergency medical technician

And ex-police officer
stuart winder

Responds to the call
for a possible sudden death.

Sudden death would mean
that somebody has collapsed

And is presumed dead
at that point in time.

Dispatch, this is ambulance
314 arriving on the scene.

However, sometimes that is
not the case

When we arrive at scene.

Narrator: At this point,
they can't discount

That they might be dealing
with foul play.

Winder: As we're pulling up
to the property,

We're looking for
if anybody else is present.

If there are any signs of
anything abnormal for example,

Smashed windows.

Narrator:
But as it turns out,

They are greeted and allowed in
by the victim's son,

The man who placed the call.

Yeah, he looked
a little bit shocked.

Hiya. Where is she?

-Upstairs.
-Upstairs? Okay.

He told us that he had been
trying to contact his mother

Throughout the day
and had been unsuccessful.

He'd entered the house,
looked around downstairs.

There was no sign
of his mother.

He'd made his way upstairs
and entered the bedroom.

Narrator: The emt and his
partner are directed upstairs

To the possibly
deceased patient.

♪♪

Woman: Help. Help!

When I reached the landing
at the top of the stairs,

We heard what I can
only describe

As muffled conversation.

Hello?

Narrator:
The veteran emt quickly

Sizes up the situation.

Sudden death means that it's
presumed that somebody has died.

Sometimes, they're not dead.

Narrator: But what is less clear
is why there are two voices.

So, this was very perplexing.

The son never mentioned
that there was

Anybody else in the property.

So as I approached the door...
Hello?

I expected to find the woman
alive talking to somebody else.

[ indistinct conversations ]

Narrator: Which is not at all
what he finds.

It was silence and the lady
was laid on the floor,

What looked like
clearly deceased.

Narrator:
They check to make sure.

She was cold to the touch.
We got our equipment out.

We put a meter on her finger.

And that tells us if there's
any oxygen levels in the blood.

We'd also check for pulse.

Our conclusion at this point,

The female had been deceased
for more than two hours.

Narrator:
Which beckons the question,

Whose voices did they hear?

And where did they go?

The fact that both my partner

And I had heard the voices
as we walked up the stairs,

We were both totally convinced

That there was somebody else
in the property.

Woman: [ laughing ]

Narrator: Then again,
they hear the two voices.

-Help me.
-Get off.

Winder: I did look around.

I looked behind the door

Because there was a vacant area
behind the door

Just to make sure
there was nobody there.

Totally convinced it
was coming from the room.

Winder: There was only one door
and one window.

There was no way that anybody
could have passed us

By to get out.

Woman: You have to come with us.
Don't worry.

There was nobody there
at that time.

♪♪

We both looked at one another
and just said,

"what the hell's going on?"

♪♪

Sir, can you come up here
for a minute, please?

Narrator: What he needs more
than anything now

Are straight answers
from the woman's son.

You've got to gather
the evidence to get the proof.

And sometimes, you're not
always told the truth.

Is there anyone else here
in the house?

Narrator:
But the man confirms

That there's no one else
in the house.

Still baffled, all stuart can do
is get the body to the morgue.

-Doa, ready for transport.
-Copy that...

Woman: Help. Help! Help!

But suddenly...

Woman: Help, I can't.
I can't do it.

Narrator:
...The voices start up again.

-Join us.
-Help!

Narrator:
This time much louder.

-Hello?
-It's time.

-It's time to come with us.
-Please. Help!

I looked around again
in disbelief

Just making sure
there was no one else there.

I can't do it!

You can leave him here,
he's a big boy.
Hello?

♪♪

It's empty.

It was just complete silence.

There was nobody.

Man:
Transport eta, 15 minutes.

Narrator: Before the body
can be transported,

They need to complete a report.

I still had to finish my job
with the patient.

Even though we know
the female is deceased,

We still have to go
through the protocol.

Time of death, 10:04.

Aah!

And then I saw something
that I will not forget

As long as I live.

I saw a shadow
go across the wall.

Woman: Help. No, I can't.

I knew for sure I was looking
at something not of this world.

No, can't do it.

Respond to a 911 call,

They follow voices
coming from a bedroom

Where they discover
a woman dead on the floor.

And no signs of anyone else
in the house

Until it becomes clear...

Time of death, 10:04.

...The voices did not come

From anything human.

♪♪

It terrified me.

When I looked over
at my partner,

He looked as scared as hell.

We were just frozen on the spot
really, my colleague and I.

♪♪

And I was looking at something
that clearly couldn't be.

We were both totally convinced

That there was
something paranormal.

Stuart follows the path
of the shadow

As it paces around the room.

When I saw the shadow,
I did look around

To see what may be casting it,

To see if there were
shadows created that way.

But there was nothing there.

Winder: I'd describe the height
of the shadow

About five and half feet.

And it was human shaped.

I couldn't tell any gender
at that point.

-No, can't do it.
-Yes, you're ready.

Narrator:
He struggles to understand

What he's truly looking at.

When a person dies,
there are many reports

Of witnesses seeing shadows.

A shadow figure
has no physical features.

It's a theory that
they're still forming.

They're in the process
of becoming something else.

-You're ready?
-No.

Narrator:
Stuart concludes that the shadow

Is the woman's
disoriented spirit.

The female had been deceased
for more than two hours.

I had heard the voices
as we walked up the stairs.

So I believe the female
wasn't aware that she was dead.

Brewer: Some spirits aren't
looking to move on.

They cling to the seductive
pull of the physical realm.

They want to stay behind.

-Are you ready?
-No.

-Yes, you are.
-I can't do it.

Yes, you're ready. Come on.

Narrator: But he is less clear
about the other voice

Conversing with
the woman's spirit.

This voice that stuart heard
might have been a guide,

A guardian angel, an ancestor,
someone that might have come

To guide this woman
back to the light.

No, I can't. I can't do it.

Narrator: To help the woman
find her way to the light...

-Are you ready?
-No.

Narrator: ...The man who has
devoted his life

To saving others...

Hurry up.

Narrator: ...Takes the matter
into his own hands.

It's time.

[ crying ]

My sister's a nurse and she
has always maintained

And always whenever
anybody dies open a window

Because she believes that's
the way to let the soul escape.

And subconsciously,

It's something that
I've always had in my mind.

As I approach the window
to open it,

I think my partner was thinking,
"what's he up to?

What's he doing?"

-Join us.
-Help.

-Are you ready?
-No. I can't do it.

-Yes, you're ready. Come.
-I can't.

Help. Help.

No, I can't do it.

The shadow just seemed to slip
out the window

And into the night.

Brewer: There are certain things
we do after someone has died.

Some cultures believe
in covering mirrors.

Some believe in opening a window
to release a spirit.

But there needs to be some act,
some ceremony, some ritual,

Some for of closure to release
the spirit's physical contract

To our physical realm.

Eventually, an undertaker
came and removed the body.

[ police radio chatter ]

When we got back
in the ambulance,

We had 20 or 30 seconds
of just complete silence

Before we both looked
at one another and just said,

"what the hell
just happened in there?"

-No.
-Mum?

-Where are you, mum?
-Help.

I believe the son heard
the voices,

Saw everything the same as I did
before we arrived on scene

Because he did look
shocked and scared.

-You're ready.
-No, I'm not.

Mum?

Yes, you can.

You're ready.

This woman had just passed,

So she is looking for some form
of guidance or instruction

As to what to do next.

Yes, you can.

You're ready.

You might think of having
a paranormal experience

As a very passive act.

It's just something
that we're witnessing.

When in fact, we might have
a very significant role

In helping a spirit
to cross over.

I believe this is exactly
what happened with stuart.

whenever we went to a call

Where there was
a deceased person,

I would always make a point
of opening a window

To let that soul escape.

I was always a skeptical
believer.

And now I'm a believer.

I do believe in the paranormal.
