dead in her bathtub.

Jill Halliburton is

So here we're coming up to
the residence of the victim.

On September 8, 2014,

We were expedited to the scene.

they notice that the son,

the initial call in to 911,

of the victim,

The first piece of evidence
that was encountered

the residence was the knife.

As the officers are making

it could have been used to

try to restrain somebody.

Towards the back of the house,
there was a door

that led into the family room,

had a tempered glass

their first observation was
that the room was ransacked.

of blood on the carpet.

was found.

was found lying outside

the bathtub,
bound hands and feet,

multiple stab wounds.

Significant amount of blood
everywhere.

And we were overwhelmed
by the amount

to her body

when we initially walk in.

The crime scene

investigators collected

the evidence by swabbing

there's shattered glass,

textiles and fiber,

in contact with.

She was beside herself.

it's like the sunshine's
just, like, all over.

That's how I remember her.

KINSEY:
Initially, we were suspicious

because Justin's story changed

in his 911 call,

just in that short period of
time, from suicide to homicide,

My mom killed herself!

She cut herself,
and she looks so cut up.

Clearly,
once the officers got on scene,

and she was bound,

it wasn't a suicide.

And you do have Justin on scene

We learned that Justin was
an avid knife collector

and had all different sizes
and shapes of knives.

all belonged to Justin.

At that initial point,

Justin could be our suspect.

That was the mystery.

"Miss her" is an understatement.

So this is probably
a day before our wedding.

we are both very happy.

the number one suspect.

was this huge support for him.

The day Jill died,

I called Justin.

First I say, "Is that you?"

So, I say, "Are-are you there?"

He said, "No." I say,

"Why don't you go home

kind of strange."

And then, uh,
a-about ten minutes,

15 minutes later,

I received this frantic call.

JUSTIN: Mom!

NAN YAO:
He told me, "Mom is dead.

"Mom is dead.

"She is facedown in the bathtub.

"She is facedown in the bathtub.

Filled with blood."

I bolted out from my office.

Yeah. On the way,
we call police.

I get to the house,

and I saw Justin sitting there,

totally out with this long gaze.

His eye have-have no soul
in there.

He saw-- he's seeing
something far away.

He was so out of it.

I know he's really upset.

If what he saw is true,
inside the house,

he must be
tr-tremendously upset.

And I just lost it after that.

I have no memory whatsoever

to police station.

to the victim for this case.

This was personal.

I walk into my house, to
my garage, take off my shoes.

there's a drawer in my room with
a bunch of knives I collect.

That was open.

And I'm like,
"That's-that's weird."

Your dad tells you there's
somebody inside your house

that he sees on a camera...

So, at this point in time...

And that's where we determined

the homicide was committed.

And, uh, so, I knocked
the door and said,

Police were able to obtain
school security footage,

there's no way he could've been

And also the entrance
and exit to the community,

that showed the times

was found to be truthful,

so he was completely cleared
of being our number one suspect.

When it comes to the trauma

that Justin had observed,

it was the main catalyst

to the inaccuracies

of the information he was
relaying to the detectives.

That's the sweet Justin.

Come on.

So, after our interrogation
of Justin,

we conclusively determined

that he played absolutely
no role in his mom's murder.

And so, we can take
those resources

and those investigators

and now focus on who actually
committed this crime.

The clock is ticking,

and we still have a homicide
suspect somewhere out there.

Jill Su was murdered.

One of the reasons
her death made headlines

she was the grandniece

Erle Halliburton.

But we got some new information

that adds a whole new level
to this investigation.

JUSTIN:
For the last two weeks,

I've been by myself

'cause they've been
in Malaysia.

the house and the dog.

When they were gone,

Uh, yeah, like,
like 20 people.

And was there

Having a house party
and having dozens of people

in that residence
just days before this murder

Who's walking around the house?

Did they see something of value
that maybe they wanted

to come back and steal?

With all these
new persons of interest,

these partygoers,

a new possible scenario
starts to formulate.

They could've chosen
to come back,

smash in that glass door,

go to Justin's room,
retrieve some of his knives

and any other valuables
throughout the house.

And then, at some point,
were surprised by Jill.

There was some sort of struggle.
They tried to restrain her.

She tried to escape.

That's where the second knife
was dropped

outside of the door.

She was dragged back inside.

She was put into restraints.

She was taken to the bathtub.

And that's where
she was eventually killed.

We take DNA from everybody,

So the easiest way
to explain touch DNA

is by thinking about our skin.

So our skin comes off
constantly.

We shed a lot, and that has

many cells. Within those cells,

many cells. Within those cells,

we have the nucleus,
and within the nucleus,

we have our nuclear DNA.

And anywhere we touch

a surface or if we embrace

with a hug, my DNA material

is gonna be on you,

and your DNA material
is gonna be on me.

So that's where the term

in jail now for two years
awaiting trial.

all of a sudden,

he runs towards the door
of the courtroom to escape.

We have a guy on the loose

managed to escape.

It was a shocker,
and it's like, "What?"

how could he have escaped?

That was really distressing

We were getting hundreds

After a six-day manhunt,
we finally got a tip

that he was at a hotel
in West Palm Beach.

that he was possibly armed,

we had to send a SWAT team.

So, officers responded.
And on July 20th,

Resiles escaped in 2016,

he was taken into custody.

To the Broward County citizens,

South Florida is a safer place.

Ultimately, eight people

a continuous nightmare at night,

but he wouldn't tell me.

"Dad, I can't sleep

"because if I close my eyes,

that Mom's in the bathtub,

of his very severe PTSD

that he had to go through.

Despite all the trauma
we had to go through,

the DNA and the science
saved Justin and myself.

So, this was
a death penalty case.

But the jury did have the option

to convict him of manslaughter,

which means he could have
been sentenced

up to 15 years in prison.

they hold a retrial,
