Back in 2015, I was a detective

in the Major Crimes Unit.

I was assigned to this case
as the lead.

here or there,

this was one of
the most brutal homicides

we've had in Key Largo
in over 25 years.

of where I was.

So, this was
the scene of the homicide

I responded and arrived
sometime around 3:00

Right away,
we secured the children at

with keeping them safe.

We then went to the residence
and looked at the door

a crime scene investigator

in 63 homicides.

the female was identified as

26-year-old Tara Rosado

and 30-year-old Carlos Ortiz.

It did appear, from the disarray

there might have been some kind

of physical altercation.

dresser was in disarray.

There was stuff all over.

With two gunshots to the head,

no forced entry,
and a disheveled bedroom,

the first theory
that comes to mind is...

...possibly one of the parties

and then has this moment
of clarity.

And then turns the gun
on themself.

I've been covering the Keys

as a reporter
now for about 18 years.

When I arrived, there were tons
of police cars-- marked,

Police in uniform,

in scrubs,

neighbors milling about,
really wondering what happened.

Given the prevalence of drug use
and alcohol abuse in the Keys,

that we have our share of.

HURTADO: If this case were
to be a murder-suicide,

the main element would be,

"Where's the gun?"

There was no firearm
visibly seen.

At first, we thought

possibly that
there might have been a gun

under one of the bodies
or some of the clothes.

After I did a walk-through,

we have the medical examiner
come in.

Eventually, he agrees

However, once the bodies

were removed, there was no gun.

That tells me that there was

someone else in the room.

And that's when

the hunt for the killer began.

WEINER:
Wasn't until we started
to move things

and found the other casing
that was under

a bunch of clothing
that was on the floor.

.45 caliber.

They were also able to confirm

that both casings were fired
from the same firearm

because of the markings

Once you fire the casing,

it will leave that imprint
of the rifling

We like to call it
"the fingerprint of the gun,"

because every gun has

its own pattern.

So that helps us in the sense
of there being one firearm.

WEINER: We were also
able to identify

a Asus Zenfone.

But what was interesting--
there was

an Apple-manufactured charger
that was plugged in

without a phone attached to it.

And the investigators
could not find an Apple phone

or any form of Apple device.

The question became,
where is the iPhone?

That is a key piece
of evidence that could

provide you with the answers.

The lead detectives realized

that the neighbor,
and 911 caller, has

some of the footage

from the night before,

However, what often
occurs is that

WEINER:
We understood the FBI

maybe help us out with this, so,

the DVD was turned over
to the FBI for them to try

Once we identified
who was deceased at the scene,

we started to do some inquiries
as to their past.

MARTINEZ:
Carlos was of the area.

He was currently working
at a barbershop.

Carlos was

incarcerated
for a period of time

for the use of narcotics.

But he did have a desire
to really want to make right

you know, settle down.

MARTINEZ:
He had this American dream.

and have his own tattoo shop.

Carlos recently moved in
with Tara, and from what

investigators know, he had
been helping out with her kids.

The first 24 or 48 hours, um...

I just remember feeling...

I can't.

There are three girls
in my family.

and Carrie was the baby.

We did everything together.

We were all just so good
at having fun,

picking on each other, and,

very successfully.

I knew Tara
had started dating someone,

but...

I never met him.

She told me he was great.

You know?

he was funny and he showed up
when he said he'd show up.

WEINER:
This case happened in

mid-October,
and I was set to retire

the following year, in April.

So, I knew that I had six months
ahead of me

in trying to solve this case.

And I knew right there when

that opportunity was given to me

what I needed to do

and serve this family justice

and find out who did it.

As we started to identify
some of Tara's inner circle,

we are notified
that an individual

identifying himself
as Juan Rosado

had just come down

from Miami-Dade to our scene.

He formally identified
himself as

the former husband of Tara, and

that he shared two children with
her, and he wanted to make sure

that they were all right.

We asked him to stick around

'cause we wanted
to talk to him more.

For whatever reason, they like
to come back to the crime scene.

They come back to see, "Is it
something that I'm getting

away with?"

"Are they getting any leads?"

"Do they think it's me?"

And that, for us,
is almost, like,

a telltale sign that this person

has possibly been involved
in this case.

WEINER:

the way he did,
we had to ask ourselves,

"Did the ex-husband do this?"

We have our first suspect.

We identified Juan Rosado
as the previous husband

and also appeared at
the scene shortly after

we discovered the bodies,
so he became

a person of interest right away.

MARTINEZ: Juan Rosado
had a restraining order,

so he couldn't get near Tara.

We know that he had

threatened her in the past.

So all of that plays a role
and raises a red flag

because you're wondering,

"Is there an incident
that maybe upset him?"

Tara and Juan had
just been divorced.

Six months later,
she meets Carlos.

Then she's dead.

Was this a murder of jealousy?

MARTINEZ: The ex-husband

because there's gonna be

and then, in the process,

gets into an argument

retrieves the weapon,
and then ends up inflicting

Given the placement
of the casings,

he was standing
a couple feet away

inside of the bedroom
or by the door,

and then he leaves, taking
the murder weapon with him.

The next question was,

"Well, where were you
the night before?"

WEINER: All of that
was later verified

but he still remains a suspect
because there's not to say that

help in this situation.

We had to do
quite a bit of homework

in trying to develop
other leads.

We were hoping
to find a firearm,

or that the FBI would be able

to reconstruct the deleted data

from the neighbor's
surveillance footage.

But in the interim,

we had to start looking at who

possibly were friends with
or associated to

either one of our victims.

and I talked to the owner,
who indicates

that Carlos Ortiz had once
worked for him

at the barbershop,
but he was actually setting up

literally right next door.

All right, y'all, I'm gonna
give you a sneak preview

And this altercation occurs
just a little bit better

than a month
prior to the homicide.

MARTINEZ:
Now the detectives have

a new lead to follow.

So we interview Alan

a few days later.

MARTINEZ: Alan then walks away

and it seems like that's it.

And then...

(tires screeching)

in full force,

crashing his car

and almost running Carlos over.

MARTINEZ: You can clearly see
through the surveillance footage

that Alan was trying
to kill Carlos,

and this was only a month
before the double homicides.

Sometimes people will try
to find revenge.

Maybe that same argument

and he came to finish it.

MARTINEZ:
Could Alan have been clouded

by the emotions?

The last thing we want
is for this case to go cold.

But in this case, detectives
had, pretty much, a standstill.

I had made
some promises to Katie

that I was gonna get
to the bottom of this

So, in the beginning
of November,

a few weeks after the murders,
we receive information

that a snorkeler who was

The biggest issue
with a firearm specifically--

being found in the water,

is that it will ultimately rust
when exposed to air.

somewhat of an older gun.

it's the same type of ammo,

and it matches the casings

that are recovered

forensic lab in Tampa,

where they start to process it

I've been in law enforcement

for 28 years now.

I'm currently assigned

On November 23, 2015,
I was notified that

there was a break
in the case, and there was

any other evidence.

In particular, a phone

When these high-profile cases

and just pretend we were

one of those guys

that were gonna go out
and snorkel that canal.

I'd go down there

So I'm just searching the area.

It's pretty clear water.

And then, out of nowhere...

there it is.

There's an iPhone
sitting right on the bottom.

It was white, so it kind

Here I am,

told to go look for a phone,

and here it is.

I find the white iPhone.

We had found
the needle in the haystack.

I was told of this phone
being found

in the same canal
where the gun was found.

About a month into
the investigation,

there were two potentially
key pieces of evidence

from the scene.

Both were sent out for analysis.

MARTINEZ:

will retrieve the gun
out of the water.

They will photograph it
from various angles

and try to identify
a serial number.

the firearm with ammo,

a controlled environment.

They were able to confirm

So that means

WEINER: Things are finally
falling into place,

but we haven't identified
a true suspect yet.

MARTINEZ:
Digital evidence, just
like physical evidence,

is extremely important
because it does provide

a lot of answers.

From a forensic standpoint,
the most important thing

with the phones is to dump out
whatever information

that may be available
with the phone,

which we would
need warrants for.

HURTADO:
There were two phones:

one, an iPhone,
that was found in the canal,

in addition to the Asus Zenfone

present at the crime scene.

nobody knows who they belong to.

that the SIM card from

to Carlos' phone number.

we were unable to get

any other digital evidence

due to his phone

at the crime scene,
on the other hand,

had a lot of information.

was Tara's phone.

HURTADO: But once the detectives
found that Carlos' phone

had been out of service
for months, they determined

As we extracted the data,
you could see Carlos having

where there was something

On October 15 at 03:17 p.m.,

We don't know who this guy is,

but we're seeing him
all over this correspondence.

where he states,
"I'll meet you somewhere now.

Carlos then texts Jeremy again

and says,
"My house or the shop."

That's where it ends.

GOODHUE: This man texted Carlos

and perceivably was giving in
to his demands.

He said, "I'm gonna
come right over. Calm down,

I have money for you."

He actually sent him
a picture of money.

Now the question is
who is Jeremy Macauley?

We want to know why

why he owes the money.

There's a reason why
Carlos and Tara ended up

being killed that night.

MARTINEZ: Through
the data analysis

that we received from the phone,

we were able to see a video

from Jeremy Macauley.

WEINER: And it's a video of what
appears to be Carlos capturing

a video being displayed
from a white-faced iPhone five.

So, for instance,
it's me taking a phone

and then videoing another
video coming from a phone.

On the phone portrays
Jeremy Macauley in front of

a large portion of
suspected cocaine,

and him verbalizing something
like, "Come get this, boy."

Once we identified this video,

we tried to solicit
other witnesses

to start getting more
information about Jeremy.

From the digital forensics
from the phones,

we also identify a person

by the name of Steele Hancock.

He does explain to us
that he does know the victim,

Carlos Ortiz,
that they were friends.

He was also friends with Jeremy.

WEINER:
So we learned through Steele

that, during a fishing trip,

that, during a fishing trip,

Jeremy Macauley came across
a floating bale which contained

12 or more kilos of cocaine.

That's an estimated value
of maybe about

a half million dollars or so.

That was huge.

I knew that that was crucial
information about Jeremy.

SANCHEZ:
Most people refer to
any type of big drugs

that were found on the water

are very popular fish
to catch in the Keys.

They can tend to be
on the large, bulky side,

a couple in a week,

and sometimes we won't have any

for maybe two months, but it is

works hard for their money, and

Police found out that he was
a small-town drug dealer.

He had an existing network

of people that he could use

to help him
sell the cocaine locally.

And they broke down
the drugs and they sold it.

I think they kind of felt like
they won the lottery.

MARTINEZ:
Steele ultimately stated

that Jeremy enlists Carlos

to sell the cocaine, and in turn

he agrees to finance

Carlos's dream
of owning the tattoo shop.

Unfortunately,

started using the cocaine
instead of selling it.

with Jeremy at all.

In retaliation, he ends up
closing the tattoo shop,

Looking back at some
of the texts, Carlos is now

basically telling Jeremy that,
"I'm gonna tell on you

"using that video as evidence
if you don't

give me what I want."

MARTINEZ: That's when Jeremy
shares a picture

of the money as saying,
"I'm gonna provide you

so that you don't get me
in trouble in return."

It was very important
to receive those text messages.

He was going to be meeting up

with Carlos at any given point.

So, these are all things
that I need to

FARLEY:
Every time you thought...

...you knew everything,

the rabbit hole
just went deeper.

I didn't know Carlos.

And while I'm horrified

Right around 10:30 p.m.,
on the camera, you see

a dark SUV pull up
in front of the house,

at which point a male,

from the passenger side,
exits the vehicle,

has a bit of a conversation
with Carlos.

It is unknown what was said,

but then they walk
into the home together.

Through the surveillance
footage, we were able,

to determine that it was

that there was an individual

We identified her
as Suhai Montenegro,

Eventually, we were able

to set up an interview
with Susie

along with her attorney.

She was able to establish

that she'd loaned
the vehicle out

the evening of that homicide...

and he had

someone with him

and he made the fatal mistake

One of the things that

in possession of that firearm

were committed.

Shortly after the arrests,

other witnesses
started to come forward.

photos of the firearm
with a gentleman.

he didn't have that gun

at one time or another.

That was icing on the cake.

And so I was completely
confident that we had

ten years flat.

This way, he didn't risk
having to go to prison

for the rest of his life
if he was found guilty in trial.

That was huge.

story that we knew it.

The forensic information

made the case.

That's what helped
tie everything together.

HURTADO:
On December 19 of 2017,

a judge sentenced
Jeremy Macauley

to two consecutive
life terms in prison.

As well as an additional
30 years in prison

for armed robbery,
because they were able to tie

in the canal to Carlos Ortiz.

HURTADO:
You're so invested in the case,

it's a sense that there's
a reason why you're doing this.

It kind of allows you

Tara, unfortunately, was
a victim of circumstance.

we at least provided the family
