one person even Rob
will clear his schedule for.

We've kind of put bandage
here and there.

Carol started out
as our nanny.

Then she became
my assistant on set.

What she's invested
in my boys...

She connects all of us
and is sort of the
emotional glue

in our life,
that continues today.

this house means to them.

hilarious experiences
over the years.

in your career.

How is it you've been
in the industry

acting for more years

Actually,
what was your very first gig?

Where did you start?

The first big movie I did
was The Outsiders which...

I'm wearing my wardrobe,

-and my Sodapop Curtis
Greasers wardrobe.

I had to choose whether
I was going to do the movie
or commit to going to school.

I chose the movie,
figuring I would do the movie,

-and then to go to college...

And ended up doing
just two movies a year,
a year, a year, a year...

So I'm still a disappointment
to my parents

-that I have
no college degree.
-[Drew laughing]

-Um, let's talk about Carol
a little bit.
-[Jonathan] Yeah.

Carol sounds to me
like she is family.

She started off
as my assistant.

Then became house manager
and now is just like...

the family member.
Carol's done...

every iteration of job for us.

But, the...
the main thing is that...

is sort of her heart
and devotion,

and that is incredibly
hard to come by.

She and her partner, Karen,
are the cutest couple
that ever lived.

They love their house
and they love to entertain.

And the house is...
It has that thing
of being kind of like...

Looks really, really good,
but then you realize,
oh...

This needs to be over there,
or why is this
situated like that?

[Jonathan] Is... Is nobody
gonna talk about the elephant
in the room, by the way?

Why did you tell us
to pick you up in a pasture?

-I'm so confused.

I know that it's supposed
to be an "Ambush..."

When I walked out and I saw

I was like, "Wait, what?"

And then I saw the camera crew
and I'm like, "Oh, my gosh!"

"No, this is not real!"

You brought your crew?

I brought my crew.
Are you ready
for what's going to transpire?

Well, I know
the Property Brothers.

though, because you have...

a beautiful house.

And, usually, we come
to places that need
a little something.

But this...
You've done
a really good job here.

Everybody can use improvement.

long as his face... Decades.

As long as our relationship.

I knew the boys
when I met them, his sons,
when they were two and four.

[Rob] Carol started out
as our nanny.

Um, then she became

What she's invested
in my boys, and how much
they love her...

The history that they have
together, the history
I have... Sheryl has...

She connects all of us...

And is sort of the
emotional glue in our life
that continues today.

She knows when I'm home,
to have it all arranged,
so I can really be present

for my boys, particularly
when they were little.

She protected...

that and enhanced

that part of my life,
at a time where it was really,
really critical.

Carol feels like
a sister to me, is a little
bit of mother in there.

There's a little bit
of second wife,

so I can always go to her
for advice and vice versa.

We're close in age.

We can relate to a lot
of things together, right?

And, also, he's just so
giving, right, not just to me,

but to my wife, to my family.

He... I mean anything.

-I loved your mother.
-My mom, yes.

-He loved my mother.
-Who's my biggest fan?

-My mom! [laughing]

Big mom points, yeah.

[Rob] I loved her mother.

Her mother was...
was my biggest fan.

I could do no wrong.

Even if I gave
a bad performance
or there was a bad episode,

she always loved it

[Carol] Mom, who lived here
with us for many years...

[voice shaking] She's
no longer with us, but...

Um, she knew Rob,
and she would give him
these huge bear hugs.

And it was kind of like
a bear hug where Rob
would be like, "Okay, okay..."

He would try to pull away
and she'd still hang on to...
[laughing]

So, it's important
to help Carol
turn that... that corner,

and nothing better
to do that than a redo.

Are you okay with some
strangers just going
through your house?

The only thing in my house
that we haven't done
is the kitchen,

but we just don't know
how to do it.

When we first moved into it,

we were kind of like
our own designers.

ten years later, things
have changed, obviously.

We've kind of put
bandage here and there.

But the cabinets
came with the house,
and we never...

-We never did anything
with the cabinets.

And they're falling apart.

is literally off.

-Don't you know a handyman?

Oh, no, he's not handy

On a show
that's about being handy.

But has there been
an experience

where you discovered
that he wasn't handy?

-Do you remember the time
I was sweeping the roof?

That flat roof at Garden Lane,
and I was sweeping
the rain off...

-[Carol laughing] Yeah.
-And I was sweeping it so hard
that I broke the, um, staff

-on the broom.
-Yes.

And cut my hand so badly.

I bled so much that I almost
passed out on the roof.

-[Drew and Jonathan laughing]
-I had to go to the emergency
room. You remember that?

[Carol laughing] Yes.

So you nearly killed yourself
sweeping.

I mean, sweeping
is pretty advanced stuff.

Oh, but he's got
a good eye for design.

-I do, I do.
-[Jonathan] Okay.

-So that's a good thing.
-I think the biggest thing
that jumps out to me

is it feels a little
cave-like, and it's very dark
in here.

-[Carol] Yes.
-[Drew] So I think, you know,

to bring a little bit
more light in here
would be a great thing.

But what doesn't work
for you and the family?

So, the dark, like you said...
okay?

And then the cabinets.

You can put, like,
one item in the drawers.

-[Drew] The drawers are tiny.
-[Carol] Yeah.

[Jonathan] Well,
this is not full depth, so
these are only 18 inches deep.

Yeah. So you can put, like,
one napkin in there
and then it's full.

-[soft thud]
-[Carol] Oh,
and it's falling apart.

-It is falling apart.
-[Carol laughing]

Also. Are we wild about this
sticking all the way?

-Well, yeah--
-This feels
like a diving board.

Rob will tell you
my family is very big.

And, so, when we have family
and friends over,
you cannot go through here.

And that being the access
to the backyard,
you want to have good flow.

-Exactly. Yeah.
-[Drew] Yeah.

[Carol] Once you sit down,
no one can go through
that area.

You're stuck. You're either
stuck in the backyard

or you're stuck
inside the house.

I would love more, like,
something open, right?

Something more open
that flows, more light in...

What I think is amazing is...

When you don't have doors
that fit, just put
a giant filler piece

-in the middle of it...
-[Drew and Carol laughing]

-...to cover the gap--

[Jonathan] You bought
a bigger fridge, so you had
to move this all over?

So you disassembled
this cabinet
and then rebuilt it with this?

Yeah. We didn't know
what to do, 'cause when we
built it, there was a big gap,

-and we're like, oh, we'll
just put something in there.
-I'm just gonna...

-[Rob gasps] Ooh!
-[Jonathan] There we go.

-Oh, my God.
-Satisfying. All right.

We did what we could
because we didn't know

what else to do
with that kitchen.

It was...
We just bandaged it all.

[Drew] I'm convinced
we can add
all the storage you need

and panel-ready appliances

that blend seamlessly
with the new cabinets.

And this will make the space
feel less cluttered
and more spacious.

-Anything else
that just really bugs you?
-The flooring.

As you can tell, nothing,
nothing matches

-or nothing makes sense.
-Right.

And that... That thing there.

I don't know what it's called,
but that thing
drives me crazy.

-The trip hazard?

Oh, yeah, no, no,

Running consistent hardwood
right through the kitchen

to the living room
and down the hall will
eliminate the trip hazard.

And we can update the look
of the living room
at the same time.

Carol away,

about what we think
we should do here.

kicked out of your own house?

-In this instance, absolutely.

So, just conceptually,
before we get to the details,

like you said,
there's kind of a box in here.

My thing about houses
is I'm all about the light.

-Right.
-Yeah.

And you have
a beautiful backyard.

Why can't you blow this out
and pick all of this up to me?

-That would be the number one
thing, because...
-[Jonathan] Yeah.

...you know,
light, quality of life,

looking at something pretty
to me is more valuable
than having an extra place

-to put on
five more coffee mugs.
-[Jonathan and Drew] Right.

Natural light is the best.
I can't do a dark house.

The no-no of no-nos

is bad floor plan and flow,
and not enough natural light.

[Drew] Maybe we can do
a built-in bench

for the dining on that wall.
That will save us two feet.

And so if you think
about that, that would
basically now do this.

Then you would have
a walking path.
So potentially,

that's one way to save space
without stealing
any from this side.

[Rob] Why have tons of chairs
that are almost
always gonna be empty?

You slide into the banquette,
and it's a great use of space.

So are you cool
if we roll up our sleeves and
dive in tomorrow, hit demo.

is sawdust is very drying
on the skin,

-so moisturize twice.

I mean, they've done
a great job with this.

But some things are beyond
somebody's pay grade.

that room and destroyed it
in like 25 minutes.

It's a nice, open
concept right now.

It's very open concept,
that's for sure.

When Karen and Carol come back
and they see what we've done,

I know how much this house
means to them.

To be able to transform it...

plumbing and electrical teams
are already here

working on top of each other

to a four week timeline
to get Carol and Karen

back in their home,
as soon as possible.

that you have this zen space
you've created.

Obviously, when we're talking
about letting more light in.

to see a bigger window.

Because right now
it's a 36-inch window.

How big can we get away with?

I mean, there's I don't think
there's ever a window
that's too big.

No, well, so the span
from this corner to the edge
of the door right now

-is just over nine feet.
-Right.

So we would not be able to do
a nine foot window because,

well, one, we need
a little clearance for this
structure next to the door.

-We also need to make sure
we can terminate our cabinets.
-Yeah.

-So I would say, maybe...
-It's going to start
in the same place.

-Yeah, exactly.
-It's going to go longer.

Can we get it to here?

Yeah, we could probably
go a little further.

We could probably squeeze
seven feet in.

And we could make it
a serving window
with a bar for food and drinks

on the patio side.
giving her a pass through.

I think giving her
a pass-through

that's got more width,
she's gonna be so grateful

when she has
friends and family over.

Your view is very valuable.

We're adding
a lot of functional storage
everywhere else.

to do for counters
and backsplash?

-We can do...

or we can take slab

this is what I want
and I don't need any of those?

-Is it okay if we do that?
-Hundred percent. That's
the cleanest way to do it.

I like to soften up,
usually our windows,

by having...
like a Roman shade
or something like that...

-Yeah, yup.
-...um, balance.

If we're going seven feet wide
in the window,
it's gonna look weird.

-It's just going to be
too much material.
-Yeah.

So I think, maybe we don't
do any material there.

But we can do
an upholstered bench

-for the built-in banquette.
-Great.

So, I feel like with the tones
of the wood and everything,

-and the--
-This whole family is great.

All right, so we'll find
something, kind of,
in this realm.

[Rob] Mmm-hmm, yup.

Keep it light, keep it airy...

[Jonathan] From the entry,
we want to create a chic,
cohesive vibe throughout.

Wide-planked
engineered hardwood

and a total redesign
featuring cozy couches
in the living room,

centered around
a large TV screen

will help give
the entire space
a sophisticated refresh,

without knocking down walls
or reconfiguring
the floor plan.

But the belle of the ball
will be the new dining room
and kitchen combo.

More natural light
is an absolute must,

so we'll widen the window
to ensure it doubles
as a pass-through

for easy backyard
entertaining.

Then, stunning, full-height
rift sawn white oak cabinets
featuring a new pantry

will both wow
friends and family,

and along with deep drawers
in the peninsula,

offer the couple
all the storage solution
they need.

In the dining area,

a new sliding glass door
removes the current door swing

and frees up valuable space
for dining indoors or out.

While the built in banquette
allows us to tuck the table

further away
from the peninsula,

ensuring a clear path
and better flow.

You know, Carol.
You know, Karen.

-You know--
-I do.

I can tell you right now,

this is going to be
an incredible space.

I'm really excited about this.

It's gonna... It's gonna be
a completely different house.

of week two,
and our schedule just got

a whole lot more jam-packed
because we found out
the new window and door

are being delivered
this morning.

Our team got here
at the crack of dawn
to start insulation,

now that the
plumbing and electrical
have passed inspection.

Choosing glass
that was in stock

so that we could
ship it right away,
saved us a ton of time.

And with the door and window
in, our team is now starting
dry-walling

while I deal with the wrench
that's been thrown
into our plans.

I just spoke with Jonathan,
and he is down and out
with a very bad cold.

So, until he's feeling better,
Jonathan's gonna keep on top
of logistics from home.

Okay, I need the same cut

And in the meantime,
Rob has agreed
to roll up his sleeves

and put in even more time
to make sure
that Carol and Karen

get back into their house
as soon as possible.

countertops have arrived.

incredibly durable, but they
help keep the overall vibe

for the kitchen
light and bright, which
is what Rob requested.

Jonathan is still on the mend.

But of course, Rob is here
to help finish up the work
on the cabinets

starting outside
with a bonus bar shelf

that will complement
the new serving window.

is what it should have
been like the whole time.

dedication and love for Carol.
