- I was given the choice
of going to reenlisting

and becoming an officer and
being this weather observer,

the duty weather observer,

for my entire career
out in the ranges.

Or if I elected
to go to Vietnam,

they would send me to
Cameron Bay which was one of

the nicest places to get sent to

because you weren't really
under fire or anything.

And then when I got back I

would only have two and a half
months left on my enlistment

so I would be discharged
and I could go home.

And since I was quite
homesick at the time,

I decided to take Vietnam.

I was expecting to get
sent to Cameron Bay

and to have a pretty
easy rester after all

the stuff I'd been
through out on the ranges.

Well when I got to
Vietnam, you always have

to check into the country at
Tan Son Nhut, next to Saigon.

And then the night
before I got there,

the Communists had attacked

the airbase at Binh
Thuy in the Delta,

a South Vietnamese Air Base
with some Americans there.

It's on the Mekong River just

a few miles upstream
from Can Tho,

South Vietnam's
second-largest city.

And one of the American
observers had been killed

and some other Americans
had been killed.

And I got there and the
sergeant looked at my orders

and he said to me well,
I showed him my orders,

I'm going to Cameron Bay.

And he said to me, he said,
"Well, you look to me,

"Airman Hall, like
a man that knows how

"to take care of himself when
things get pretty rough."

And I said, "Yeah."

So he tore my orders and said,

"And I'm sending you to
Binh Thuy in the Delta."

And I said, "Wait, wait,
there's a whole busload of them.

"I'll go get a
couple, there's men

"that could do it better
than me, right?" (laughs)

He typed up my orders and said,
"You're going to Binh Thuy."

And I was on the next
plane to Binh Thuy.

(upbeat acoustic music)

There was the night I was
watching four other guys in

their undershirts, they
weren't even in combat-dressed,

running across the square and

the shells landing in among
them and killing them.

I was in full combat
dress and I was at

the entrance to the bunker
and I didn't run out

to help them which took
tremendous, and I just,

if I had, I'd have been killed.

(somber music)

But then I was there when
after the shelling stopped.

It might have been that
one to help the medics

and the other guys.

I did get injured in Vietnam

but it wasn't due
to enemy action.

One night during after
one of the attacks,

I was walking
across the open area

and they'd dug a hole, they had,

there was a piece of
concrete and they'd dug

a hole in the concrete
to put up some stuff.

And it wasn't marked.

And in the rain I
accidentally stepped in

the concrete hole
and ripped open

the skin over the
shin on my left leg,

a three corner kind of tear,

but it didn't do any damage.

It didn't cut any
muscles or anything,

but it opened it to the bone.

And the only medic we
had was the dentist.

And when I went
off to the dentist,

he said it needed 13 stitches.

And he only had two
shots of Novocaine

and he didn't want
to waste 'em on me

because South Vietnamese
soldiers had taken
serious injuries

and he needed them for them

because he couldn't get any
more til 'the morning came

and the American planes
would deliver him.

So he said that he needed to
sew up that tear, 13 stitches,

and I wouldn't with
no Novocaine, okay?

And I asked him, I said,
"Is it okay if I scream

"when you do it because
it's gonna be painful?"

And he laughed,
he was a captain.

And he looked at me,
he understood me.

I had three stripes.

He said, "Yeah, go ahead
and scream all you want

"but see how close in
the Communists are,

"they're right out
there in that tree line.

"They're sure to hear it.

"It'll give him
them a good laugh.

"Go on scream, and let
them laugh, right?"

And I was so bullheaded.

I said, "I'd die before I let

"the Communists laugh
at me screaming."

And I just stood there,
bullheaded Englishman,

English kind of person I am
and he put in all 13 stitches.

I said, "But it's okay if
I count them, isn't it?"

He said yeah and we
counted together.

I still remember 11, 12, 13,

and I still have the scar
on my left leg today.

And then my left, lower
left leg swelled up 'til

I could just barely put
on my fatigue pants.

And a couple days later
when, or three days later

when he had Novocaine and
the medication he needed,

I went over there and I
said do you have something

to kill the pain
because it aches a lot?

And of course he only
had a limited supply.

The captain still had
that sense of humor.

He said, "Yeah but
remember when you take it,

"it'll make the food in
the chow hall taste bad."

And I thought I was
gonna die laughing

because it already
tasted so bad.

I said forget that noise,
if it tastes any worse,

I won't be able to take it.

And so I did it all without
painkiller or anything

and we were sitting there
laughing our guts out.

(upbeat acoustic music)

In Vietnam, the night I was in
the tower and it was raining

and the Communists
attacked and there was

a South Vietnamese,
with mortars only,

and there was a South Vietnamese
soldier standing down at

the base of my weather
tower and the control tower

which was the same
tower next to one of

the South Vietnamese aircraft.

And a shell, a mortar shell,
landed directly next to him

and it was in the
rain and exploded.

There's no flash
with a mortar shell,

it just looks like a smoke bomb.

And the shrapnel killed him.

He dropped instantly.

And although I was in
the tower above him,

it had wooden sides and
stuff so it stopped,

and a wooden floor, and
it stopped the shrapnel.

So it didn't blow off any wind.

There's no concussion
with the mortar shell

and none of the glass
or anything was harmed.

And so as I looked there it
looked like he was play acting.

It looked like he was an actor

and he wasn't very good, okay?

It looked like he just crumpled.

I thought he was play acting.

I thought, since we were friends
and he knew I was watching,

that he was just trying to fun
with me, the way soldiers do.

And it was so new, it was one of

the first mortar
attacks I was in,

I didn't realize we
were being fired on.

I thought it was funny,
the way he acted.

And he just laid there and I
kept saying come on, get up,

but I was like 40
feet above him inside

and so I kept saying to
myself come on, get up.

And he wouldn't,
there was no movement.

So almost laughing after
the all clear sounded,

I went out of the tower
and I went down the stairs

and all the time I was
saying come on Tadakis,

come on, get up.

And then I walked over to him
where he was still laying in

the water, his body was.

And if you looked at him,

it looked like he had
hadn't been touched.

It looked like he had
just been standing next

to a smoke bomb.

And I said come on,
come on, get up.

And so I was gonna nudge
him up with my boot.

And I went to turn him over
and his body turned over

and you could see, on the
other side of his face,

the shrapnel, all
that little stuff,

had totally blown away
half of his face, okay?

I wasn't ready for it.

And I spent the next two hours
vomiting my guts out down in

the irrigation channel.

But my brain wouldn't let
me remember that for years

because it was protecting
me from the shock.

Once you become afraid, see,

your brain is the
organ of your body,

and I speak from
direct experience,

it will do anything
to protect you.

Including give you tunnel vision

and not let you see
what's off to the side.

(somber piano music)

July 20th, 1964, I enlisted
in the US Air Force.

And I did 13 weeks
of basic training

at Lackland Air Force Base
in San Antonio, Texas.

The military gives you
a large number of tests

to see what you
might be good at.

I got a perfect score in that,

better than the
test had ever seen.

And I got the Air Force
record for math ability.

I got one wrong out of 500.

And so they were very
impressed with me.

And when they came around
with the wish list,

as I was graduating,

I had best grades of
anybody in my class.

And they said where
do you wanna get sent?

And I put in maybe
Germany or England

and the sergeant said no, I
understand you're getting sent

to Nellis, they want you there.

And so when my
orders came through,

it was for Nellis Air Base
here in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The very night I got
there, they were holding

a birthday party,
ordinarily enlisted men

are not allowed in
the officer's club but

the major whose having
his birthday party

could do anything he wanted.

Those chief observers said
to me not everybody's here.

The duty range observer,
he's not here tonight.

And one of the other
guys who became one

of my very good
friends was laughing

and said maybe he's out
partying with Range Four Harry.

I thought they were
just trying to scare me.

New guy, you always
tell him a few stories

and see if you can frighten them

and get to know them and stuff.

And so I didn't
pay any attention.

And then this lady who
was about 40 or so,

she looked really
ancient because I was 20,

came over and asked me to dance.

And I'd had a couple
of beers and I said no,

I don't want to dance with
you because you're too old.

And she got really upset
and huff stomped off.

The next morning, the
chief observer called me in

and he said that
was the major's wife

and you really offended her.

All of us danced with
her and don't expect

to get promoted 'cause the
major, you offended his wife.

The next day, Monday
morning, the major,

when I got to work,
he was so stern.

He called me in his office,
closed and locked the door,

and then he was
laughing, he was saying,

"Airman Hall, you're
the only man here

"I can trust around my wife.

"All the others want to dance
with her and play with her.

"You and I, you belong here."

(laughs) And the joke was on
them because the major was,

he was a really nice guy
but he got kinda jealous

with all the other younger
men dancing with his wife

and he himself didn't dance.

And so it kind of got
off to a unusual start.

My friend was
explaining it to me.

He told me the legend
of Range Four Harry,

and I thought that he
was just teasing me,

trying to scare me.

And he said Range Four Harry was

a large white radioactive
horse that floated around

the deserts and the dry lake
beds in the hot part of summer.

I was laughing so
hard I couldn't walk.

I fell down and I was laughing

and I must have
laughed for 20 minutes.

I thought these guys are
really pulling my leg.

The next day, the weather
observer that I was supposed

to replace, he finally arrived
in one of the barracks.

He was such a
naturally likable guy,

the first time I saw him.

God, I wanted to be him.

He had a convertible, he had
a new uniform he'd bought.

I felt ashamed that I was
kind of rude and country

and non-polished and
so on, because, I mean,

he was from Los
Angeles and everything.

And the only thing
I'd found odd was

that he didn't seem to know
where anything was, okay?

Now he had claimed to have
been there for six months,

and this was in
the spring of 1965.

And we're talking
about a very tiny base.

If you'd been there
for six months,

you know where every
rock is, right,

you know where every board is.

And so when he took
me out to range three,

he wasn't in any
hurry to get there.

When he got out there, he
marched right up to the door,

there was a padlock on it.

And I was so impressed
with his militarism

and he felt all of his pockets
and he said, "I don't seem

"to have the key,
give me the key."

And I said, "I
don't have the key."

He said, "Didn't the
cooks give you the key?"

And I wondered what are
the cooks doing with

the key to the
weather shack, right?

I mean, yeah.

I said, "No, I
don't have the key."

And he just swiveled
smartly on his left heel.

He had me take out
a pen and a paper

and he said let's see,
the low level winds,

let's see, the ground level
winds, what do we say they are?

Out of the southwest
at five, okay?

And then he got to the third
level, the fourth level winds.

Let's see, they're out
of the north at no, no,

let's see, Charlie,
they trust you

and we're doing this
for the government

so let's make those
4,000-foot winds out of

the southwest at
four 'cause four is

the government's number.

Anytime you tell the
government anything,

they wanna hear the number four.

And he made them up, and
we made up all the winds,

we got in there and I
was sitting there in,

kind of in awe of him,
this is how it's done.

And then we went
over to the chow hall

and he was saying
goodbye to all the cooks.

I said those master
sergeant told me

that you would show me the
other four weather shacks.

And he looked palsied with fear.

Then he and I got
back in the truck

and we went back down to
the intersection between

the range three and
the range one road,

some miles back, and we started

the long drive
down to range one.

And at first he was going
more or less 40 miles an hour,

they were gravel roads.

He kept driving
slower and slower,

and then when we were
coming through the mess gate

where it overhangs the road,
and you couldn't turn around,

you were committed
to going all the way

to the dry lake bed just
to turn the truck around,

he kept driving
slower and slower

and you could see he was
getting more and more afraid.

I was really surprised 'cause
when I looked out there,

there was nothing to be seen.

You're looking at the desert
in the summertime, sagebrush,

and he'd slowed to low
gear and five miles an hour

and it didn't seem like
he ever wanted to close.

And I said well,
you're gonna have

to turn into range one just
to turn the truck around,

because he was shaken with fear.

We got into the graveled
area and there was

the control tower for range
one and the skip bomb area

and I was expecting
him to park the truck

and take me over and
unlock the shack.

And he was still
sitting there and he had

the truck looking out over
the desert to the southeast

and he was shaking in terror.

And he was saying
do you see anything?

And I said well, there's
nothing to be seen.

And he said it's a hot day,
they gotta be out there.

And I said well who's out there?

And I thought maybe he
was still putting me on.

And I said you mean
Range Four Harry?

And he got really, it was
like touching a nerve.

He said no, there's
no such thing, honest.

He'd insisted that
we'd have all of

the doors on our
pickup truck locked.

I said I want to see the
inside of the weather shack

and I had to talk him into it.

He said okay but
I'll sit here in

the truck with the
engine running.

And if I see anything
I want you to know

that I'll drive into base and
find the range maintenance man

and we'll come back for you.

So if I see anything,
just lock yourself in

the weather shack
and wait for us,

I promise I won't abandon you.

And I'm thinking god,
this thing about scaring

the new guy's kind of
gotten out of hand.

I mean, I'm looking out
there, all I could hear was

a few meadowlark-like sounds
in the sagebrush out there.

So I got out of the
truck and I closed it

and he locked the door behind me

and I walked over to
the weather shack.

And the range one weather shack,

the door was around
on the southeast side.

And so I walked around and
I opened up, unlocked it,

and I opened it up
and I looked inside.

And I looked in and just
scanned, quickly, the log books

while he was, you could
see he was almost on

the verge of leaving
me out there.

And it was obvious
that nobody had been in

the weather shack for
like three or four months.

When we got back from
what he was showing me,

he was terrified and
exhausted and he said to me

that he couldn't spend
another night there,

and that I was on my own.

And then he left so I had only
one afternoon of training.

And so I was now on my own.

But at first, I didn't
pay any attention

when I went out to range three

and I would see the
lights up the valley

and they would seem to float.

I remember distinctly
one night there was

a group of five of them.

And as they
approached in arroyo,

I was expecting them to go down
into the arroyo and come up.

And the lights just floated
right over the arroyo,

didn't blink or anything.

And I thought well gee, only
a helicopter could do that,

but you couldn't hear
any helicopter sounds.

And then in the barracks,
strange things would happen.

Like I'd go to bed at,
say, nine o'clock at night.

And then one night I
found myself waking up.

So as I hurried down
the center aisle toward

the latrines in the middle,

there was this cubicle
off to my right.

And so as I was
relieving myself,

it seemed like there was
a white lady standing in

the first cubicle with some type

of white squarish
weapon in her hands,

standing there like this
up against the bunk,

between the bunk
and the partition.

And I didn't want to look
at her in the mirror.

And so, as I was walking past
the entrance to the cubicle,

she was standing there like that

and she looked really afraid
of me, ready to fire on me.

And I was so shocked, I
couldn't think of anything

but just keep walking.

For a dream, I was becoming
terrified, it was sinking in.

Yeah, I decided that the
safest thing I could do,

and I was was to go back to
bed and go back to sleep,

and then maybe my brain
would get back to normal.

Nobody killed me yet if
I'm awake on the morning.

That was the best I could do.

(gentle piano music)

It was a very
idyllic, beautiful day

and I was listening
to what sounded

like western meadowlarks
singing in chorus way down

the valley but I had
actually never seen

a western meadowlark bird
anywhere out in the ranges

but I would keep hearing
the sounds all the time.

And I was looking at the
purple sagebrush and stuff,

I thought I saw
what looked to be

a little white girl run
past one of the openings.

It looked like the
sagebrush in the background,

only much much thicker
and much taller.

And there were lanes
through the sagebrush,

but generally speaking, the
sagebrush was more of a maze.

And after a little while,
I got a clearer glimpse at

what I was certain
was a little lost girl

with chalk white skin
running out there.

So I put on my gloves and I
got my two canteens of water

and, of course, I always
had combat boots and stuff.

And I walked out just to see
if I could get a closer look.

Is anyone out there?

Are you a little lost girl?

And then every now and then
I would get a glimpse of her.

I could just drop
down the sagebrush

and make broad lanes
for me to go through.

And as soon as I
started doing it,

I noticed that all
the meadowlark sounds

that I'd heard coming from down

the valley suddenly moved
up the valley quickly.

It just seemed like there
was a flock of birds around

and you could hear one off
to the sagebrush on my right

and one off to my left,
none actually behind me,

but then like an arc around me.

And, of course, it made
me a little nervous

but I was determined
to make sure

because I would every now

and then would get glimpses
of the little girl,

and one of them put out
a real shrill sound,

it was off to my right.

And the little girl
stopped running

and just stood
there in the lane,

out there, some
distance away from me,

with sagebrush in
between me and her,

and waited for me to break
through to where she was.

And so in a very patient
and deliberate fashion,

I broke down the sagebrush,
made a real nice wide trail

and broke it off
until I could get

to the lane where she
was and, in effect,

have her trapped in a box
canyon and the sagebrush.

No more than from here to,
say, where no the camera is.

(gentle piano music)

Don't be afraid, I'm
not gonna hurt you.

I'm the weatherman over there,

I just thought you might
need to be with your parents.

And I turned around
when I looked at her

and I saw that she
was a little girl

but she wasn't a human
little girl, okay?

And the shock I felt
can hardly be described.

I heard all these
meadowlark sounds.

I kind of turned around
and put my back to her so

that I could
control my own fear.

And I kind of started staggering
back to my weather shack

and I had to go down through
the lanes I had caught.

And I was just saying
I'm the weatherman,

I'm over here in
the weather shack.

If you need some
water, I have it.

If you're lost, just
come to where I am

and I'll call the base
commander and stuff.

I was coming down the
last big wide trail

with sagebrush on both sides

and I wondered if she
was following behind me,

and I stopped and
turned around slowly

and a sight I'll
always remember,

coming, running
straight towards me,

not as far away as the
car, 50 feet, maybe less,

was one of the Tall White
men, Range Four Harry.

He was running down the
trail, straight towards me.

And I was stood there like
a deer in the headlights.

He could have run right over me,

I was in such shock.

And he got to a cross
lane that I had cut

and then he turned quickly
into the cross lane

and ducked down
behind the sagebrush

and then would peek at
me over the sagebrush.

And I was in such shock,
I was kind of staggering.

And all I could think
was just keep walking.

What you don't know
about won't hurt you.

And I just kind of staggered
back into my weather shack

at range one and
I closed the door

and I just sat there
for like a half-hour.

(whimsical music)

One afternoon, god, I'll
remember it forever.

It was a hot day and it was
like 110 or so out there.

And I was standing in my
range three weather shack,

I was inside in the shade
and I was talking on

the phone to the
Nellis Weather Station,

the wind measurements
that I had taken.

And there was a lot
of static on the line.

And it seemed like
somebody was listening in.

Of course, the
guy I was talking,

my friend whom I was talking

to at Nellis, noted the
static too, so we hung up.

And with my hand still on
the phone I looked out,

straight north, where
the theodolite was just

a little bit to the left,
and standing out there,

just this side of
the theodolite,

just standing there
in an ordinary
nylon-type ski suit kind

of thing with boots, and
she was obviously listening

to what I'd been saying
on the telephone, okay?

I wasn't saying
anything of importance,

the winds are out
of the southwest,

but she was obviously
very intently listening.

The bright sunlight
reflected off her white suit.

The sunlight was so bright
that it hurt my eyes.

The pain was real, the
brain doesn't do that.

And therefore the light
coming off her suit was real

and therefore she
was real, okay?

And this was quite
a problem for me

because I kept wanting to think

that whatever I was
seeing was just me.

And after a couple
three seconds,

she suddenly realized that
I was looking back at her

and she took off running
towards the northeast corner of

the range three lodge, and
once she got just close

to the edge of the corner,
she put both feet together

and jumped like a baserunner
running for second base.

So I decided that I needed
to walk over carefully

and see if she was still
behind the range three lodge.

And I started walking
towards my theodolite,

Range Four Harry
himself stood up from

the sagebrush on the bunker
road off to my right,

off to the northeast,
and just stood

there looking square at me,

wanting me to know
that he was there,

that the lady wasn't alone.

And he knew perfectly
well what I was thinking

'cause of his electronics
and he knew perfectly well

that I understood that
if I continued to go

and look around the
range three lodge,

he would be behind me.

So I decided, for my own safety,

to just stop there and rest
my arms on my theodolite

and wait for the
situation to clear.

He was obviously perfectly real
and she was perfectly real.

I couldn't accept
it emotionally.

And as I stood there,
in a few minutes,

five or 10 minutes,
I could see the lady

and her younger niece
circling away 'round

to the northeast.

And when I looked over
at Range Four Harry,

we communicated
with body language.

I didn't say anything,
he didn't say anything,

but if we had said
something I would have said

I don't know what
the lady wants.

And he would have said I
don't either, (laughs) okay.

And then after she had
left, then he went back in

the sagebrush, I
decided that I should

just go back in my weather
shack and read a book.

And so we started
communicating like that.

(upbeat acoustic music)

(sinister music)

A few nights later,
I was laying in bed

and I heard the door
open on the west end,

and a group of people come in.

And one of them sounded
like the Air Force general.

He specifically said to the
people who were with him,

"I have a man down here, he's
bunking down here at the end.

"Harry, go down and get
him like you always do

"and March him out front", okay?

And I sat up on the
side of my bunk,

kind of assumed an inspection
'cause I was expecting

that a general, an Air Force
general was gonna come in,

I only had two
stripes at the time.

No more than like from
here to that wall,

Range Four Harry
started peeking around

the corner to see where I
was, 'cause he could hear me.

And I can't explain the
feeling of terror that I felt.

As I sat there I realized there

was no point whatever
in panicking.

Because if there was any
kind of encounter occurring,

I'd lost already.

The best I could do was
just sit there in fear,

begging God to protect me.

And he pointed this squarish
instrument at my temple

and it half hypnotized me.

It didn't hypnotize me
the way he thought it did.

As I stood up, I
had to take orders

but I could still
remember everything.

And they marched me out
to the to the flight line.

One of the colonel's,
bird colonels,

was worried that it
seemed to him like I

was remembering too much.

He said he thought
maybe it would be better

if they had me stand
inside the petroleum oils

and liquids shed that was right
there, in case I panicked,

and marched me in there.

All I could see
were the bare walls.

For perhaps a half hour,

they had me in there
for a long time.

And then the general
said to the others

that he was gonna show them the
rest of Indian Springs Base.

He wanted to show them the
aircraft repair hangar.

Harry was walking me
back to the building,

so they were telling
Harry to hurry up.

As I was walking towards
the barracks I now realized

I was completely
unhypnotized and I was now

had my own my own feelings,
and I was really confused as

to what was going on, was I
dreaming or was this real?

And down the road the bird
colonel had dropped back

and he saw me, and he
seemed very concerned.

I decided that the
smart thing for me

to do was to go back to bed
and let the colonel come get me

because I didn't feel like
confronting a bird colonel.

I wasn't ready for it, I wasn't
emotionally ready for it,

so I went back in
and I went to bed

and I covered up myself and
went to the fetal position

and said my prayers
and went to sleep.

(sinister music)

It took me almost six
months, I estimate,

to overcome the fear
I felt when they came.

At first, when things
like that would happen,

I thought it was me dreaming

or me having some
kind of brain problem.

But as days went
on, I decided that,

because they seemed
as human as I was,

as real as I was,
they seemed to have

the same emotions
and everything, that,

to control my fear, that I
should start talking to them.

One of the first
attempts was I was out

at range three one
morning and I was tracking

the balloon through
my theodolite

and I felt totally alone.

I'd taken the reading and
as I was turning to the left

to write on my form, my
reading measurements,

this tall white lady in
a suit, not touching me,

but virtually leaned
over my shoulder

to look through the theodolite
to see what I was looking at

with a pleasant
smile on her face.

Now I'm right here,
I think I'm alone.

I've had no warning, I
haven't heard anything.

And when I turn, since
she's like right there.

Well, I didn't jump in fear
because I had long since come

to believe that,
for some reason,

my mind didn't work
the way I expected it

to when I was out there.

My emotion was darn, my
mind's acting up on me again.

So I finished what I was doing
and then I turned around.

She stood off aways, like maybe
as far away as this camera

and was just looking
at me smiling.

She seemed to be having
the time of her life.

Her skin was as white
as a piece of paper,

she had about half as much
hair as a human lady would have

and it was platinum
white and very short.

Her lips and her nose,
they were smaller than

what you'd think,
her ears were smaller

than what you'd think.

But she otherwise could
easily just dress up

and look like a human nurse,

and you wouldn't have
noticed the difference.

Say like midnight in Las
Vegas where everybody looks

a little weird, she could
have just walked in among us.

And she had on a slight
helmet and she had on a suit.

And it's just that
because she was floating,

like the suit gave her
the power to levitate,

I thought it was me,
I thought my brain

was malfunctioning or something.

And so to control my
fears, I just smiled

and said did you want
to look some more?

It's okay, I'll stand
back and let you do that.

I thought I was just
speaking to maybe

a hallucination or a brain,

to try to control
my fear because

when you're alone
out in the desert,

even if you're afraid of
a rabbit, if you panic,

nothing nice is gonna happen.

You're gonna kill
yourself running away from

a rabbit or something, right?

So you have to
have total control

of what you're gonna do next
in order to come back alive,

even if you're just
jumping at your own shadow.

And some nights I did. (laughs)

And so on the one hand it was

a very pleasant
experience, meeting her,

but on the other hand I felt
tremendous disappointment

with myself because
I had hoped my brain

would last to be at
least middle-aged.

(gentle music)

Well, it's very easy
for me to, well,

I lived it, it's like I can
remember every step back

to the weather shack.

(mystical music)

I was dazed and I was in shock.

There are so many ways

that you can be caught
unawares and be afraid.

And it comes down to a showdown

of how many different types

of psychological
defenses do you have?

Such as whistling in
the dark or making

a contract with God if I live.

That's what was keeping
me alive. (echoing)

that I'm your loving man *

* Make up your mind and do
what you're going to do *

- You probably don't realize

how much humans
depend on each other

to validate their experience.

See, if you and I together
we're out here in this desert,

and if a Tall White guard
were to just walk up

and say hi, how's it going?

It would be so natural
for one of the two of us

to say to the other
do you see what I see?

And many humans base
their version of reality,

their emotions and so on on
that type of interaction.

And when you see a scout craft,

alien Tall White scout
craft, intentionally blocking

the road, making sure that
I didn't go any further,

and it was now necessary for me

to turn my pickup
truck around on

the narrow gravel road where
I was without backing into

a cactus and
getting a flat tire,

and keeping the wheels on the
road so I don't get stuck.

And to do it, I'm gonna have
to make like a 13-point turn,

up and back up, up and back.

And then as you're driving back,

as I finally got my truck
turned when I was driving back,

the 10 miles or so I was
too afraid to even look in

the mirror to see if
they were following me.

Then now you asked the
question were they for real,

parked on the road
in front of me?

When you were there, you
had to react as though they

were real and they were real,

but now you can say to
yourself you can switch

to whistling in the dark.

- I was 24-years-old and I had
just graduated from college.

And my roommate wanted
me to go and celebrate

the fact that we'd graduated.

And in all the time
I'd been in college,

I'd never been in a bar.

I really wasn't interested.

She said oh, I'm moving back
east, I'll never see you again

so I went and we found
ourselves standing on

the perimeter of a
huge dance floor.

She said I'm pretty sure there's

a guy who's coming across the
floor to ask you to dance.

And I was terrified
because it was a slow dance

and the idea of getting close to

a total stranger was not
amusing for me. (laughs)

But I wasn't going
to turn him down

because I realized what kind
of courage it probably took

to just walk up to
a total stranger.

And, as a tall woman, I
really hadn't been asked

to dance much at all.

Theoretically, we were dancing,

but I didn't notice him
moving his feet much.

And he said, "What's your name?"

And I said, "Marie-Therese."

And he said pardon
me, and I said, "Oh,

"just call me MT,
everybody else does."

I mean, even the dean of women
at the college called me MT.

And then he said,

"No, I mean you have a
last name, don't you?"

And I said something which
I'd never said before,

never thought
before, did not hear

what I said until
it was out there.

And I said, "My name is MT Rice,

"and I'm looking for
a man named Mr. Paddy

"so I can be an
empty rice paddy."

And he was just a
year back from Vietnam

and he thought it was hilarious,

and, very quickly, he said,
"Would you be an empty hall?"

And I said, "Pardon me."

And he said, "My name
is Charles James Hall

"and I'm asking
you to marry me."

And I said, "You're
crazy, I don't even want

"to dance with you again."

And he said, "Would you
like to go out for pizza?"

Well, I have a fast metabolism,
I'm always ready to eat.

And as a poor student,
I was definitely in

the mood for a pizza.

And then a day or two
later he was taking me

to meet his sister
and brother-in-law

and we were going to
play cards and visit.

And I said, "You weren't really
serious when you asked me

"to marry you the other night."

And he said, "Well,
I kind of was.

"You had a cynical
look about you

"and I knew I'd only
get one chance."

And then he said very
quietly, "Besides,

"God told me you'd be
my wife." (giggles)

And we got married a
scant five months later.

I said, "Well, you have
to grow some hair."

He still had a military haircut

and everybody had those
lamb chop sideburns

and I said, "It would be nice
if you lost a little weight."

He gained 50 pounds just in

that short year after
coming home from Vietnam.

We were laying in bed one night

and Charles seemed kind of
quiet, maybe a little morose,

and we'd come from
a party, left early.

And I guess the
people at the party

were talking anti-war
stuff and such

and I think that's
why he was in a mood.

And he said those people at

the party have no
idea what it was like.

And I said you mean Vietnam?

And he said oh no,
that was the war,

it was pretty much
what you might expect.

Then he started telling
me about the terror of

the extraterrestrials
coming into his barracks.

I think the reason Charles
didn't tell me about

the extraterrestrials
before we got married

is perhaps he was a
little insecure about

what my response would
be, what I would think

of him as a person.

And he said what do you think?

And I said I never really
thought about extraterrestrials

or whether they exist or not.

And I really don't care.

At the time I was just
young, happy to be married

and looking forward to having

a family once he
finished his college.

For the next 30 years,
we just raised a family.

I have six children.

And then Charles came
to the end of a contract

and would eventually be
unemployed for 18 months.

And I came into the
computer room when he was

a month into this unemployment

and he shut the
screen real fast.

And I said what are you doing?

And he said oh, I am
working on a book,

for the past 18 years
without telling me about it.

And I said really?

And I read for about 20
minutes and I came back

and I said we have
to publish this.

Well first of all he
had to swear to me

that it was true
and he said oh no,

I'm just writing my memoirs
for our grandchildren.

And it actually got to be
a pretty heated argument.

And finally I said
Charles, you're unemployed.

If the Men in Black
come to the front door,

you go with them, it's
free room and board.

And then he laughed and
he said you're right,

what do we have to lose?

You changed the name of
your friends in the book

to protect their privacy.

Have you changed the Tall
White's names as well?

- No, because I figure
that any Tall White

that wants to sue me would
have to appear in court.

I win either way, okay?

(laughing)

I win either way.

Guilty as charged,
can we have pictures?

During my lifetime I've
personally been in front

of extraterrestrials of
three different types,

the Norwegians with 24 teeth,
the Grays from Roswell,

Tall Whites who I
encountered routinely out in

the deserts here in Nevada.

They're all
flesh-and-blood creatures,

they all have men,
women and children.

They're all surprisingly
like us, okay?

Both my wife and I
greatly enjoy the seminars

and talking to people and
book signings and so on.

99% of all of our fans
are wonderful people.

Every now and then you
come across some fans

who have ideas of
their own to express.

But I was in the service,

I've been called every
name you can think of,

some by my drill
sergeant. (laughs)

I enjoy talking to everyone,

no matter what questions
they're asking.

My books are very emotional
because when I lived

those events, they were
very emotional events.

It's not unusual for people

to be interested in
tiny details that

a person might not
ordinarily think of.

Did the extraterrestrials
care whether

or not we save the whales?

Precise distances
from my weather shack

to my theodolite
stand and so on.

Really small details.

(whimsical music)

One time in 1966 when I was
stationed here at Nellis,

one of the range
maintenance men,

a very good friend of mine,

he said he wondered
if they really

were as much like
us as they appeared

or if they were
just so intelligent

that they were smart enough
to appear to be that way

so that us guys
wouldn't panic too much

when they came around.

Because meeting them for the
first time was total panic.

Well first they have
to overcome their fear

of humans before they can do so.

That's what I was all about.

I was a test human that they
could practice on. (laughing)

Their hearing is way
better than ours.

It's as good as that of a dog,

and their vocal cords
can make all sorts

of high-pitched sounds
that we can't hear.

And I was listening
to that what sounded

like western meadowlarks,
the birds singing.

That's how it sounds
when the Tall Whites

are using their
natural language.

The Tall Whites live
much longer than humans

and they live like
600 to 800 years.

The Teacher was
equivalent in age to

a human lady, 21, 22-years-old.

She had a little girl whom
she named The Butterfly.

This was a very fun
name for her because,

on their planet, they
don't have butterflies.

There came a day in the
early summer of 1965 where

The Teacher's only
daughter, The Butterfly,

was lost in the sagebrush
down in range one.

And the Tall Whites were
frantically looking for her

but they were looking
in the wrong place,

they were looking
like five miles

or seven miles away
from where she was.

The Nellis Base
commander apparently,

on orders from the Pentagon,
I'm guessing, asked me

to just make periodic boon
releases upon every hour,

hour and a half,
from range one and

to phone him into the
Nellis Weather Station.

Of course, they were never used,

there were no planes
using range one

where the little girl was lost.

And, of course, as usual, no
one ever told me anything.

I was a low ranking
enlisted man.

I only had two stripes
at the time and

the general says go out and
take the weather report.

So yeah, yes sir,
there's the only answer.

The little girl was only
stood like three feet tall.

It wasn't just a
matter of finding her,

it was a matter of getting
through the sagebrush to them

because they're not big and
husky and strong like we are.

They're very fragile.

So they had to go
through the open lanes

whereas a guy like me
can just trump 'em down.

I was expecting it
to be a little girl

or maybe a rabbit or something.

And as I was doing that,

I heard all these meadowlark
sounds coming out,

the equivalent of meadowlark
cheering or something, right?

And I was kind of in shock.

And so, as I was leaving
the range one then

The Teacher and her little girl,

they wanted very much
to thank me for saving

the little girl's life.

Well, there is no
way in the world

that I was in any any emotional
state to stand anywhere,

that I just needed
to keep moving.

And I got into my
truck and carefully

and deliberately just drove
out and still didn't wait.

You see, so now The Teacher
and the American generals,

and the Tall White generals,
they now had this problem.

How do you get Charlie
to just sit there

and be thanked, right?

I'm ordered to take the 12:30
in the afternoon balloon run.

And when I finished
to go check the lounge

to make sure that all the
windows are closed and stuff.

And so then when I
went into the lounge

which was empty and I
started to come out,

I find the Tall Whites
collecting around me.

And on the bunker road and

so that blocking all
my escape routes,

and an American
general and three-star,

a one-star, a colonel.

And what they're gonna do
is hypnotize me partly.

It's an electronic thing,
it's with microwaves.

And that was one of their
weapons where they could

just hypnotize a
person electronically.

And she and her
little girl stood

there and very ceremoniously
and nicely said

thank you Charlie for
saving my little girl

and the American
general said well,

we've been nice to Charlie,

we gave him a tremendous gift,

a three-day pass to Los Angeles,

which was quite a
bit for a young man.

Yes, but this one
overcame his fears,

this one went back to help
her and save her life.

It's our way, we
have to thank him.

And then they've
one-by-one went back out

and leaving only me and
Range Four Harry there who,

he wasn't afraid of me and
we understood each other.

And then, at the very end,

he had me stand the
next to the wall

and sing one of my songs.

And then he unhypnotized
me and he said

when you're finished the
song then you're on your own,

and then he left running.

And now after they all
went away, now fear set in.

I tried to phone
Nellis for help.

Well, of course, Range Four
Harry was on the telephones.

I'm in here, I'm trapped
and he was laughing.

He was saying Charlie,
the stories you tell,

you have had one
great afternoon.

Your generals are so proud.

Just go to your truck and
drive in and have a nice meal.

And I didn't realize I was
talking to Range Four Harry.

(whimsical music)

But talking to the aliens,
they're always well-armed,

even if they're your friends,
they're always well-armed.

And even if they're
your friends,

when they come, there's
always a certain tension.

And so whenever they
came, you always wanted

to be very cautious
and say now I'm going

to stand up and walk
over there, okay,

even if they were your friend,

because you never,
never, never once wanted

to surprise them or scare them.

Like that one night that
they wanted to see me start

the diesel and
start the generator.

And so it was necessary
for me to stand there next

to the diesel and try to
adjust the electricity,

the generator part of it, while
the Tall White electrician

who was taller and
older than me could see

what I was doing
without burning my hand

or without moving in a panic.

And he had to learn to do
that without moving in panic.

And so the two of us
had to learn to stand,

just like that there, and
for me to say well see,

I'm gonna adjust it to 60
cycles and 120 volts AC.

And see, this is
the circuit breaker.

And I thought the only
reason I was talking was

because I was so
frickin' afraid.

I thought well you
got to be careful,

you're gonna burn yourself,
because the manifold

is running red-hot
and I'm reaching in
between the manifold.

And then there's
another guy there

and a guard right there who,
if anything goes wrong can,

cut me down at a minutes notice,

and another guard
out by my truck

and another guy standing
and reserve in case

there are enough men
there to cut me down

if I got out of line. (laughing)

To burn the building
or whatever.

And I'm saying my prayers
and it takes a while

to get used to the
idea that, really,

they're just ordinary people

and you have to
control yourself.

They're just like us and
they're afraid of things.

The Teacher, I asked The
Teacher why the Tall Whites

were afraid of me
and she explained it

to me by saying well,
this is your planet,

you understand everything here.

You can eat anything.

If you get in trouble,
you can lay out there in

the weeds and heal yourself
the way the Indians did.

She'd seen it.

If you needed help, you
could ask any human.

You can lift stuff, you're
properly proportioned.

You can lift rocks
and do anything.

But they, if they're even
stung by a bumblebee,

have to have immediate
medical help or they die.

The extraterrestrials that
I routinely interacted

with never once cared
about the whales.

The thing about humans
that stood out was

that we interacted with
the animals way way more

than most intelligent beings.

What happens is that the one
species becomes intelligent

and then kills off any
animal that might be

a danger to 'em.

I grew up in Wisconsin
and I know how

to milk cows and ride horses.

Any one of those animals
could kill me at will, okay?

They're not as
intelligent as I am.

But I as the intelligent
being try to say well,

the horse is thinking
nicely, I domesticate 'em,

so I walk right up to him, see?

On most planets,
not all, but most,

the intelligent beings
are plant eaters.

And for them coming
up around an animal

that might hurt them,
they say we can't take

the chance and zap 'em.

Every human I ever met was
afraid of them at first, okay?

The only person I ever met
that knew they were there

but didn't, at first, go
through a period of denial,

but for most humans it
was only one or two days,

for me it was a several months,
was one guy from Georgia,

when he said that he'd got to
the ranges two years before me

and he said one day
in the summer he

was out at range four
looking for skip bombs

that pilots had dropped.

And he walked over to
one of the sand dunes

and there on the other
side on the sand dune next

to him or in front of
him was The Teacher

with her three
children, and they

were writing hieroglyphs
in the sand and having fun.

And when he came over the
hill, he surprised them.

He said he saw immediately
that they were real,

and since he was from Georgia,
he said, in his own words,

it didn't surprise him
because he always knew

the Yankee government would
be lying to southerners.

(laughs) And he just stood
there and he saw immediately

that they were real
and he just stood there

and The Teacher got up slowly
and then, with her hands,

motioned the children
to take off running.

And then after they had
gone, then she smiled at him,

then she took off running.

And right then he said he
knew that they were real

but he was still
terrified of them, okay?

But he never went through
a self-denial phase

or the self-denial phase
was very, very short.

I, one time, asked the
teacher what her real name was

and she said if she told me,

I wouldn't be able to
hear all the sounds,

and if I tried to make
her pronounce her name,

I couldn't make all the sounds
so she wouldn't hear it right

so that's why they had simple
names like The Teacher,

like Range Four Harry.
- And when they're speaking

to you with their normal voice,

like we are speaking to you.

- They could make
any sound they wanted

but they had to learn
English so there was

a simplest thing
the world for them

to call me on the telephone

and sound like anybody
they wanted to sound like.

And one of the first
decisions that I had made,

and agreements that I'd
made with the Tall Whites,

The Teacher and
Range Four Harry,

was that I would never
pursue and they passed

the agreement around
to everybody that
if I saw them out in

the desert, I would
just stop where I was

and sing songs and make noise,

and then they could approach
me as close as they wanted.

And if that might only
be as close as a mile

and a quarter if they
were afraid of me.

And they could come
when they wanted,

they could leave
when they wanted.

I would never pursue,
I would never try

to close the distance.

And when they
closed the distance

to where they felt comfortable,

if that was too close for me,

if they started
getting too close to me

which sometimes happened and
I didn't feel comfortable,

that I would start backing away,

and they would stop
where they were

and they wouldn't pursue.

And when the two of us had
me, or me and the group,

had, in effect, agreed on
a distance to communicate,

then we could communicate.

They come for their purposes.

The Grays, they were here first.

Their craft are good enough
to travel faster than

the speed of light and to
reduce the forces of inertia,

which makes space
travel possible,

but they're here just because
they think of this zone

of space where the
stars are and stuff,

this area of the galaxy, as
kind of being their homeland

or their stomping grounds.

They're not territorial.

There's no reason
to be territorial

if you can travel in space

because there are so
many earth-like planets

with no intelligent
beings on 'em.

There's little point in
fighting over any one of them.

And so as long as nothing
happens in this zone

that would threaten
them or their children,

they kind of turn a deaf ear.

But if there were anything
here that might threaten

their children, the
Gray generals live in

the world with absolutely
no rules other than

the ones they
choose to maintain.

If there were any other
kinds of extraterrestrials

that would threaten
their children,

the Gray generals,
without thinking,

without excuses,
without planning,

would just go out and blast 'em.

The Tall Whites,
on the other hand,

have come from further away
and have the best technology.

When the Tall White
deep spacecraft come in,

you say that spacecraft could

have covered 100
light years, okay?

Their home planet is
much further away,
I'm not sure where,

but I estimated that
their home planet was,

my best guess, coming from

a star something around
105 light-years away.

And something above the 21st
line of southern latitude,

it's a southern hemisphere star.

Because when they would
take off from Dog Bone Lake,

they would come out at about
10,000 feet from their base.

And the earth and the moon
and the Sun all became aligned

when they powered up, they
would lift off, go straight up,

at between 8,000 and
12,000 miles an hour,

they'd just go pop up.

And when they got above
the Earth's atmosphere,

somewhere around 120 miles up,

then it was common for
them to stop in space

and then change
direction and head

for one of the other stars.

One of the stars that
would head for was

a star in the
southern hemisphere.

And the Norwegians with
24 teeth that I spoke to,

they described
their home planet.

They said that
their home star was

a nearby star such
as Barnard's Star,

the fourth closest
star, or the next star,

whose name I can never remember,

it's like Wolf 379 or something.

And Barnard Star is at five
and three quarters light years,

and the next star out is at
six and a half light years.

Their home planet was an
almost-perfect duplicate

of the earth, except that it
was running straight up in

its orbit and half iced over.

And they said that their
star was a red star

when frequently put out flares.

People would stay
underground for a while,

a couple of days 'til
the flare passed,

but otherwise, now
the Tall Whites liked

it much hotter than
we do, the Grays liked

it somewhat hotter than we do,

but the Norwegians were very
happy if it was 10 degrees

or 15 degrees colder than it
is here, than we do, okay?

They said that on
their home planet,

if you were at their equator,
the climate was similar

to the climate of southern
Norway or Sweden or of Finland.

The reason they
were coming here was

because the earth
was a better place

and almost the same
size, had a better sun.

They said that at
noon on their planet,

it looked like sundown on

the earth when you
have a red sunset.

Their technology just
barely allowed them

to travel in space.

Their technology had, their
technology allowed them

to remove the forces
of acceleration

and to accelerate the
craft without using rockets

or whatever, just using some of

the other force fields
unknown to Einstein,

but it did not allow their craft

to do high-performance
maneuvers or

to exceed the speed of light.

In order for there to be a
craft that travels in space,

it must have the
ability to remove

the force of inertia
when accelerating.

And it must have the ability
for its propulsion system

to leave nothing behind.

And that requires
streamlined flow.

But that craft be something
like an ellipsoid or

a smooth-rounded saucer.

It can not have any
concave intersections,

it can't have any intersections
like this microphone.

It has to be smooth otherwise

the force field will
go turbulent and
then it'll seem like

the mass is going to infinity.

(whimsical music)

The Tall White craft come in
on the night of the full moon.

The moon, the earth and
the sun are lined up,

and at sundown,
you're coming in on

the trailing part of the earth.

As the earth moves in its
orbit, you're following it.

Even though the moon
is smaller than the sun

because it's closer, you
have a region in space where

the gravity field is
smooth with no bumps.

And the earth is
moving away from you.

And so, when you're coming in,

you can sync up with
the movement of the sun

and the Earth, and then
you keep backing off

and let the Earth's
gravity pull you in, okay?

This happens at speeds of
8,000 to 12,000 miles an hour.

So when you come in,
the deep spacecraft of

the Tall Whites will
come in and just stop on

a dime at 10,000 feet, okay?

This is different than if
you're trying to land when

the moon is in
the third quarter.

When the moon is leading
the Earth in its orbit.

No spacecraft pilot,

coming here from another
star worth his salt,

ever wants to get caught
in between the Earth

and the moon when
the moon is leading

the Earth in its orbit,
because that's a mouse trap.

If you go in between there,

your spacecraft
must work perfectly

or you're gonna be dead.

Because with the Earth
coming towards you,

you can't back off, see?

And if there's any
problem with the coils,

if they're running hot
or anything's wrong,

then the Earth is
gonna run into you.

And so the pilots of
the deep space craft

are extremely conscious
of the phase of the moon.

(whimsical music)

Not even the aliens
can repair their craft

if they're out in the wild.

All of them need
to have a hangar.

It's because the materials
that things are made out of,

the plastic, the
metal and so on, see,

at room temperatures,
it's easy to work with,

but if it's too hot or too cold,

then it's hard to build stuff.

Like you could never
build a car out on

a glacier in Antarctica because
the materials are too cold.

You'll want to take, if a car
or an airplane were injured,

repairing it out in that
atmosphere is really,

out in that environment
is really tough.

You wanna bring it
back to a repair site

and that alien craft
is the same way.

In 1965, it appeared to me,
based on just what I saw,

that the US government had given

the Tall Whites the
base at Indian Springs.

The agreement was that they
would help us in any way

that they wanted to, not
necessarily any way they could,

and that we would help
them in any way we could.

And so, for example,
the Tall Whites,

there were parts
of their technology

that they did not wish to share

with us such as their
engine technology.

There were parts that
they were willing

to share with us because
that would allow them

to buy the parts off
the shelf, if you will,

and use to repair
their own spacecraft.

So where their interest
and ours overlapped,

they were willing to share.

Food was the big one,
clothes was a big one.

I don't know of any
specific technology

that we received from them

because I was never part
of any of those programs.

I was the weather observer.

But, for example, the
night the deep space craft

that had damage,
which appeared to me

to be meteor damage,
the night it came in.

It was obvious that
one of the things they

were gonna need was
high-grade titanium

to do repairs on the
interior of the ship.

When you looked through the
windows of the ship as I did,

from a short distance,
like 50 feet,

the interior of the deep
space craft had corridors,

like an ordinary
Caribbean cruise liner.

And the damage included
damage to the walls.

And so the metal repair parts
like aluminum and titanium

and so on, they could
get from the Americans.

So the Americans
might give them, say,

pieces of aluminum cut
to certain dimensions,

pieces of titanium.

This apparently also
included fiber optics built

to this alien specifications,

because many of the
coils were damaged.

And they might actually
need my rough estimate,

a thousand miles of fiber
optics to do the repairs.

The scientist doing
the work never has

to be told that there
are extraterrestrials,

it's gonna be used
in space, right?

Can your radio be delivered
in three parts, okay?

So you have an
integrated circuit board

but can you have that circuit
board in three different ones

so we could just take
out, and could we put in

a fourth circuit
board where we can put

in one of our own here?

Of course, that happens all
the time in the military,

sometimes for perfectly
ordinary reasons,

like shells on the battleship,
can you make 'em longer?

He just has the specs, okay?

And he doesn't have to be told
beans about extraterrestrial

or the spacecraft.

The repairs on that ship
took more than six months,

and when they finally had it
ready for shakedown trials

to take out to
the moon and back,

the first time they took it out

to 10,000 feet
over Dog Bone Lake

and just to see how well
they can control it,

and then they took
it back to the hangar

and then a couple weeks later,

they took it with
the crew on board.

- Thank you.

- Oh, well, thank you.

I'm not in very good health.

I used to be able to talk for
three days without gasping

for breath and now I'm
down to a mere 24 hours.

I'm trying to make the
hallucination go away.

Then he stopped and the
look on his face was one

of tremendous
disappointment with me.

Gee, I thought you were
brighter than that, you know?

- [Radio] I see that thing too.

But if there's,
look at that thing.

It's fascinating.

- I remember those films
and I watched them,

the ones with the
white Tic Tacs.

It appears to me that those
are perfectly authentic.

But those white Tic
Tacs, that is what

a Tall White scout
craft looks like.

The pilot of the craft,
when he's chasing them,

he doesn't have a
prayer of catching them

because they were able to
accelerate too fast, okay?

It means that their scout craft

would undoubtedly be
running powered up

to protect themself from
accidents and stuff like that.

But it also means that
the pilot was only told

what he needed to be told.

Namely, go out and fly
your airplane, okay?

So I think of that,
it's my belief

that those films were
perfectly authentic.

One of the topics I used to hear

the American generals
talking about with

the Tall White generals
was the existence

of earth-like planets nearby,

nearby being within
10 light-years or so,

where intelligent life
had not yet evolved.

They said there were several,
like a half dozen or so.

The Tall White generals
said that, on these planets,

they had tried to put
on bases of their own

to support their
commercial activity.

So they have a safe
place for their craft

to put in and repair, and
that they had not been able

to because the planets
were running as cold as

the earth or colder.

And the Tall Whites come
from a very warm planet

and they like it a lot hotter.

And they offered to
give these planets,

to give them lock, stock
and barrel, these planets,

to the American generals.

And in return, they wanted
the American generals

to build, on each
planet, just one base for

the Tall Whites so
that they had a place

to put in with their deep
spacecraft to repair,

refuel and refurbish
before standing out

to deep space again.

And the American generals
were very keen on colonizing

these planets, the
discussion revolved around

how you get there and get
back, who owns the bus?

The Tall White generals did
not want to directly share

the deep space
propulsion technology,

so the Tall Whites wanted to
be in charge of the buses,

this craft to go from Earth
to these planets and back.

The American generals wanted
to have buses of their own.

The discussions were very
pleasant and very friendly,

but the American
generals wanted there

to be a path to where they
would have their own buses.

The Tall White
generals said that if

the American generals agreed,
in order to build the bases,

it would be necessary
for the Tall Whites

to bring some material,
specialized materials,

from their other planets
to construct the base with.

I don't know how that
discussion turned out

but I can not imagine
that the American generals

would have said no purely
on the transportation issue.

And so one of the things
that I wonder about

is whether or not that process

is in play about whether
or not America is in

the process of colonizing
other earth-like planets

that are nearby, say like
eight, 10 light years away,

but where there isn't
intelligent life,

there's just life the way it
looks, say, during the Ice Age.

And with the
privatization of space,

with private companies building
rockets to go into space,

into orbit, you have a
lot more people going up

and looking around.

There's far more discussion
about intelligent life

in space from NASA, from
all sorts of things,

than used to be
the case in 1965.

People today are slowly
but surely being acclimized

to the idea that we are
not alone in space, okay?

That there's other intelligent
creatures here, coming here.

Sooner or later that will have

to be announced to the people.

It'll have to be
broken to them gently.

One day I asked The
Teacher, she was looking at

the stars and enjoying
herself, which she loved to do,

I asked her how she wanted
me to behave when they came.

And she looked at me and smiled

and said she wanted
me to feel honored

and she wanted me to
enjoy being around them

while they were there.

I haven't seen them since
1967, that I'm certain of,

but I can't imagine that
they wouldn't be here.

I've had many reports
from other people

who say they've seen
them here and in

the deserts north
of here and so on,

but it's my guess that
they're still here.

Since they came here about
5,000 BC, that's my guess,

I can't imagine that they
wouldn't still be here.

They were very focused
on what their needs were.

There always had to be
something in it for them.

I can't imagine they
would have any reason

to actually come and see me.

Now that I'm old.

And so, if they had a
reason to talk to me,

yes, I wouldn't have any
problem meeting with them.
