I traded my soul so I could be in
the right place at the right time.

So I could take the pictures
that would wake people up.

Jolt them into doing something about
what was happening to our society.

So I figured this was the way
it could make a difference.

These are the pictures I've
been taking since I made my deal.

Drive-by shooting. Guys
who did it were never found.

Bank robbery.

They got away with over a million.

Arson.

Guy's whole family died.

And so on, and so on. And you know what?

Every time, I was right there.

We're standing in the perfect
place. Look at the perfect picture.

Even the lighting was always right.

difference all this has made?

No rebirth of law and order.

No brand new civilized society.

Ten years of photographing every kind
of cruelty and unhappiness for nothing.

shot after the whole hostage thing anyway.

And it was hard to go
outside for a while afterwards.

Everybody knew my face
from storing the paper.

I'm sorry about that.

I only wish I'd had the guts like you did.

I mean, he just comes
in to make a deposit,

and he starts taking
pictures when the guys come in.

You do a public service
with those photos of yours.

Show all those bleeding hearts how
rough it is out here in the real world.

This didn't make much
difference with the robbery, though.

They never caught the guys.

It was arson.

We'd just moved in temporarily while we
built our own house. It was a mix-up,

really. You know, the
place had been empty so long,

the rental agent forgot to tell
the landlord he'd rented it out.

The landlord burned the
building down for the insurance money.

Maybe he didn't know there was
a family inside. I went to bed.

I had a wife and three kids.

I wake up on the lawn four hours
later after the fireman dragged me out.

The family's gone.

I went unconscious from the
smoke, I guess, while I was asleep.

You know, I wouldn't remember
anything about that night if Mr.

Sanderson didn't happen to
be driving by at the time.

All I know is what's in his pictures.

I've looked at this picture a million
times thinking, how could this happen?

Why didn't I wake up?

I could have saved him.

I could have done something.

What did you do to the landlord?

He disappeared.
