I have always said that if Uruguay
were a very big country,

the world would probably say
that Social Democracy

was invented in Uruguay.

And that marked our entire history
and our way of being.

that we were Latin Americans.

the common prisoners

never had poets, nor singers,

nor human rights
or anything of the kind.

They had violent policemen.

This place looks completely different.

The central corridor was located here

with tables and benches.

And the cells were distributed
over there in a circular fashion.

This was a prison
in which I was held.

It’s a bit different now.

I want to think for a minute

in something I would call
an innovation

because some innovations
are poisonous.

For example,
the person that came up

with the idea to put a camera
on mobile phones.

It’s made me run late
so many times...

I spend hours just rooted there,
bearing with it.

People have gotten very creative
with cell phones.

And they’ve added a number
of things to them.

Since I’m old

and I suffer from prostatic problems,
just like any old person.

I’m waiting for them to add
a toilet to the cell phone.

Of course, a cell phone with a toilet,
for old people.

It should be made of rubber,
it should be elastic.

that our fight entailed,

we had to commit crimes

that we called expropriations

of the current legal system.

The Tupamaros National
Liberation Movement

went from being a bold
romantic urban guerrilla

that took from the rich
to give to the poor

to an army of armed politicians

that sheltered
by their clandestine nature

kidnapped businessmen,
diplomats, counselors,

and foreign agents.

They occupied cities,
robbed arsenals,

banks, foreign companies

and military organizations.

We called it expropriation
and it was an expropriation.

I don’t feel any remorse
for entering a bank.

It’s the highest rank

of human delinquency,

not bloody,

at first,

after a shootout in 1972.

I was almost dead
when they caught me

because I had so many bullet wounds,

there was no getting out.

They officially called us hostages.

that they told the whole world
we were hostages,

that whatever happened in Uruguay,

we were going to pay for it
with our lives,

or with our bodies.

Usually they didn’t give us water
or they’d just give us a cup a day.

One can put up with hunger.

Thirst can’t be bared because
your insides start to hurt,

you can’t stand it.

the driest desert in the world.

accumulating money,

that believed that socialism

How did people come to the idea

that there is no yours and mine?

Because deep inside
we are social animals,

we are solidary,
