RAF Lossiemouth's firing range

is one of the UK's most secure
locations.

It's proving ground
for 51 Squadron RAF Regiment,

an arm of the Royal Air Force

specialising in ground combat.

I'm 20 years old.

I'm living most little boys' dreams,

you know - I'm walking around
with a...with a rifle.

just cos we're off the hill
doesn't mean we're safe.

Two, three months ago I was working
in a hotel, cleaning rooms

and doing a day-to-day job,

and, then, I'm now in uniform.

Formally a reservist,

Ben is the newest member
of the squadron.

I am a regiment gunner.

We are very much the infantry
of the airforce.

Our job is to defend
against an enemy force.

Pull!

Remember, no-one's covering
our arses now

so when we got through that channel
stay fucking low

and be quick through it.

Ben is facing his first overseas
deployment to Cyprus.

RAF Akrotiri is fewer than 300 miles

from Russian military bases
in Syria.

But before they can depart,
they must pass one final test.

Which way do these go again?
They go like that.

If there's riots or there's
something going on

in and/or round the base,
we need to be able to go

and disperse that area
and to stop people.

Just keep doing it

until he gets tired of getting
filled in. There we go.

The only thing
to stop them from hurting you is

a shield that you're holding.

It is going to turn into
a massive fucking fight.

I'm nervous about it, I won't lie.

Whilst some assume
the role of rioters,

Ben and the rest of the squadron
must hold off their attacks.

It got a bit disjointed at times,

a bit chaotic, however,
before we set off,

we briefed that in chaos it's fine,

The biggest take away

for me from this
is messages have to be repeated.

It's exactly what I expected -
hectic as fuck.

I lost vision at one point
because I got too sweaty and humid

and, then, the smoke came in.

120 Squadron are Lossiemouth's
elite surveillance unit.

There are quite a few people who
will consider surveillance people,

a bunch of geeks or nerds.

I do like numbers. I'm certainly...

I'm certainly fascinated
by numbers.

It's all about telling a story.

We were effectively in
the fourth battle of the Atlantic -

from World War I, World War II,

the Cold War,
and now where we are today.

We have aggressors, largely Russian.

My job as a surveillance
mission commander

is to gather data

to make sure that we can
counter threats.

And that's what Poseidon's
able to do.

Lossiemouth is equipped
with a fleet of nine Poseidons,

passenger-jet-sized planes packed
with surveillance technology.

The Poseidon
is a phenomenal capability.

Really, really capable beast.

It is a modern,
next generation aircraft.

It is, literally, the front line
of what is the most important thing

to the UK - to protect and defend.

And you've seen
the world around us at the minute.

The ripple effect of this conflict
has been felt around the world.

Its waters churned
by leaking Russian gas.

Recent attacks on undersea
gas pipelines

in Eastern Europe are threatening
the continent's energy security.

Communications networks disrupted,

we've seen pipelines denied.

We've seen choke points stop passage
of trade going through them.

Nobody doubts the damage

to the Nord Stream 1 and 2
pipelines is the result of sabotage.

A global war of words erupted
over who to blame.

The 20 years that I've been
in the service,

I've never seen it in
such an unstable manner.

120 Squadron have just received
new orders from military command.

OK, team, so we've had
an intelligence update.

There's now a vessel in
the vicinity of UK sensitive waters.

We're going to need to do
an intelligence task on her.

So, we're going to be generating
a surface plot

out over the North Sea
and to the southwest of Norway.

British oil, gas and communications
pipelines spanning

the North Sea
are now a potential target.

If we know that it was coming from
the west coast of Norway through

to the northern coast of the UK,
then, you can think about doing

a ladder search,
creeping line ahead search.

Alex, we need to think specifically

about what sort of radars
are on this vessel

so, then,
we can configure our sensors

to be able to listen for them.

I'm the new guy, I'm the newbie.

I studied physics, maths,

psychology and critical thinking.

so it doesn't really matter!

of 120 Squadron,

We're going to go out
and collect an intelligence look

at this vessel.

Myself on ESM will be
the primary sensor to begin with.

ESM is essentially a big hoover.

Everything that emits a signal

and we can identify them
to specific types of vessel,

so it really helps us
tie down what we're looking for.

to have something in that area

after the Nord Stream pipeline.

With the North Sea shipping lanes
full of activity,

Mission Commander Ben
is helping with the search.

You see the number of vessels
that are there -

it's really, really quite busy -

so it means that the busier it is,

the more cluttered
that environment is

and so the more difficult it is
to break it up.

So, what you need to do is
you need to try and hone in,

to pluck out the needles
from the haystacks

so that, then, then you can
potentially identify where it is.

Alex thinks he's located
some kind of warship

hiding in a busy sea lane.

But to ID it properly
and find out what it's doing,

they need to get much closer.

for the task ahead.

But what you are doing out there
is really important work.

You're going to protect the force
elements

that operate out of Akrotiri.

And when everyone's away from home
there are fewer distractions so you

can actually talk and understand a
little about what each other do.

The first time you pack up your bag,

you go away from home,

leave your loved ones
for an extended period of time.

Yeah, that does stick with you.

You might think that Akrotiri
is a nice, benign place,

but it's got its pitfalls,

There is a complete difference

between your husband deploying
and child deploying.

I am more emotional Ben deploying
than what I ever was

with Richard deploying,
I think because you have

to be strong for the children

and as a mum you don't let your
emotions show.

At night-time when you're crying
into your pillow

cos you're on your own, but,
when the children are there,

you're strong and you're there
for them.

But it's Ben deploying,

I think I'm going to be
an emotional wreck.

I was 17 there.

17? Yeah. So, 17 there.
I was 18 in there.

just a lot smarter than you are.

Well, I live at home
so I see my mum and dad every day,

I see my girlfriend every time
I get a chance.

Um, and to go from seeing them

to not seeing them at all
is going to be hard.

Four months away
is longer than ever for me.

I'm missing Christmas.
I'm missing my mum's birthday.

It is something you have to try
and contend with when you go away.

Once I'm out there,

it's just about keeping your mind
on the job

and trying not to think
too much about home.

As horrible as it sounds, you don't
want to think about people at home

because then you'll start missing
them more.

In the North Sea, the Poseidon crew
are tracking a suspicious ship.

I'm anxious
because if I get it wrong,

we've just turned this, you know,
£100 million jet

to fly straight towards this target

that is just, you know,
a cruise ship or something.

Thankfully, we have the long-range
camera on board

that I can use to
get a close up of it.

It's the Admiral Vladimirsky,

a Russian spy ship.

We classify it as an AGI -

an auxiliary gatherer intelligence.

To a layman sailing past it,

it just looks like a normal vessel.

They don't know that
it's a Russian flag,

they don't know it's registered
to the Russian Navy,

so it's a big deal.

Everyone sort of sharpens up.

Everyone sort of leans forward,

gets their eyes on the camera.

Alex must now gather intelligence
on the Vladimirsky

and find out what it's up to.

First, we need to record what's
happening above the water.

The people on board -
what technology do they have?

Any threatening or suspicious
behaviour? Are they armed?

We need to figure out what
capability this Russian ship has,

what kit they're using.

Once we figure that out,

we can start building the picture
of what they are up to out here.

We've taken a whole variety
of imagery,

whether it's the activities there
on board the ship,

how many people are on board,

what they're doing off
the edges of the vessel,

how many radars are rotating.

Are there extra radars
on the vessel?

The Vladimirsky is sailing close

to vital pipelines that supply oil
and gas to the UK,

so worries are growing about
what might be happening underneath

the Russian spy ship.

If they are operating
over the top of a pipeline,

is there something underneath them
that's potentially operating

alongside that pipeline?

Is it potentially going to be up
to a malicious act?

We need to think if things hanging
over the side or trailing behind

are normal for that sort of vessel.

And if it isn't,
what could they be doing and why.

Could this relate to other forms of
surveillance or trying to interfere

with other things under
the surface of the water?

So, we're going to get
the sonobuoys in.

Going to listen to what's going on
underneath the water.

The crew are going to drop
listening devices into the sea

to find out what's going on
underneath the Vladimirsky.

We're in the ordnance section of the
aircraft and what we have here,

we will be deploying these,
which are called sonobuoys.

Basically, they're going to be
underwater microphones.

The data that the sonobuoys collect

will help to find out what's going
on deep under the sea.

The sonobuoys need to be dropped
in the right place

at the right time in order to gather
the intelligence we need.

It's a whole team effort
across the crew

and we need to get it right.

The team will have just minutes
to gather as much data as they can.

Once the Russians notice
the sonobuoys

and alter their tactics,
the opportunity will be lost.

The Poseidon crew have just gathered
classified intelligence

on a Russian spy ship,
the Admiral Vladimirsky.

So, we've achieved our aims today

and gathered the intelligence
that Defence has asked of us.

The information will be passed up
the chain of command

to the right intelligence experts.

It is highly classified
but knowing I've done my job

and played my part
is a good day at the office.

Defence experts will now analyse
what the cameras

and sonobuoys captured

and decide on what to do about
the Russian spy ship.

Good, yeah. It was exciting.

We found what we were looking
for so it's always a bonus.

The worst job on the squadron

is the Squadron rations officer
and that is, sadly, my job.

31-year-old Ben Davey
became a Typhoon pilot

a little under a year ago

and has just joined
Lossiemouth's 2 Squadron.

I'm the most junior pilot
currently on 2 Squadron,

so you are kind of given
the mantel of rations officer.

Jelly snake?
Go on, then, needs must.

This is, literally,
all I've eaten today.

It's a shit job!
Is it?

Yeah!

I am sick of
the sight of jelly snakes!

After an intense first year,

he's now pushing
for his first promotion from wingman

to lead pilot, to become capable
of leading overseas missions.

When you've proven yourself as
a reliable and competent wingman,

then you're afforded the opportunity
to complete your pairs lead upgrade.

And that is a series
of airborne sorties

where you're leading
one or two other aircraft.

If something goes wrong,

will I be able to act without
thinking, "Holy shit!

"Like, I'm, yeah,

"flying a £100 million fighter jet.
I hope I've prepared enough."

Right, so just to reiterate,

I will play the part
of junior wingman.

I'm combat ready.

0800. The aim of the sortie today
will be

to kill and survive and also...

The first part of Ben's test
is to lead a pre-flight brief

with 2 Squadron boss, Kev Terrett.

My job is to get Ben ready to go

and deliver world-class combat
air power without error.

Because there's no margin for error.

A pairs lead is someone
who's qualified to lead

a flight of two aircraft

and deliver across any threat
in any environment.

That's a really big responsibility.

9 Squadron are in the Moray Bowl

so we'll be going exclusively
to Delta 809 south.

Being a fighter pilot is as much
about what you do on the ground,

in terms of planning and briefing

and communication skills,
as it is in the air.

The DLOs we'll look for
is to kill with the gun,

recognise the attack when entry cues

and correctly action an attack
on entry.

Recognise and correctly

that's a bit of a mouthful!
It feels awkward talking to someone

when they're so much more
experienced than you.

So, you're always second-guessing
yourself, like,

"Have I just said something that

to generate enough range,

either laterally or vertically,
from the hostile,

to, then, execute

or to enact some good follow on BFM.

on a series of high-speed
manoeuvres.

He'll be tested on how well he flies

and how well he looks
after his wingman, Kev.

There's no getting away
from the fact that there is

a state-on-state conflict going on
in Europe right now,

that could very easily escalate
into something wider.

I have to know that Ben could lead

and make the right decision
without recourse

to anybody else
and get it right 100% of the time.

You are one wrong move away

from a major conflict in Europe
at the moment.

It's like a tinder box.

You have to prove that you're
competent and confident

and can be relied upon.

This is home for
the next four months.

Regiment Gunner Ben Hoe
has arrived in Cyprus

to begin his first overseas tour.

Yeah, this is my accommodation.
So, it's four-man rooms,

so it's quite good. It means you're
not gonna be on your own,

um, so you've got people to talk to,
you've got a bit of morale.

It's all those bits and shit
that you just kind of throw

in the drawer, isn't it?
We all have that one drawer.

You know, even when you're
not even at home

you have a drawer that just
everything goes into and it's gone.

NEWS REPORTER: An adviser at the
interior ministry said that

cruise and ballistic missiles
had been used.

Ukraine's airspace has been closed.

Some said they could hear
jets overhead.

Our main concern is with
the growing environment

with Ukraine and Russia,
we are on edge.

And I think it was hard for me
to get to terms with

cos you see on a map where Cyprus is

and then Ukraine's just
a little bit north of that.

NEWS REPORTER:
Other reports of explosions

have been coming in
from across Ukraine.

Russia also has forces stationed
in Syria,

just 350 miles to the east.

If anything did kick off,

Cyprus would be one of
the first places to get called up.

There's little time to settle in

before the new arrivals receive
their first threat briefing.

So, here on Cyprus, then,

we have a lot of risk here when it
comes to explosives.

So, there we go, that's a Brimstone.

We do have jets launching from here

with Brimstone attached to them

and that's the affect they cause
at the other end.

The Paveway, however, has got
a very large blast area.

We deal with both kinds here
at Akrotiri.

It does bring it home how dangerous
the military can be

but also what makes the base
a target.

If the wrong people
got into Akrotiri,

then they could cause us
serious harm.

It's our job, if that ever happens,
to stop them.

All in all, then, I've got 51
PES's - Potential Explosive Sites -

across the site.

All my aircraft that are
going to be armed up

and have got
a forward-firing weapon system,

all point out to sea.

But that's done for a reason,
so if you're operating down

the bottom going out towards
the beach area, just be mindful that

the Typhoons pointing towards you

may have armed directional weapons
on them, as well.

We're on the outside of the wire.

We are going to be
the ones who get hit first.

You know, your job is to possibly
not come home.

It's not something that
I speak about aloud

because you don't
want to upset your family.

Ben's first shift on guard duty
will begin in the next few hours.

Off the northern coast of Scotland,

wannabe lead-pilot Ben Davey's
flying test is about to begin.

If you're leading a pair, people
need to be able to count on you...

..potentially, to save your life
and to save your wingman's life.

And being able to make
sound decisions

with another jet aircraft at close
proximity is definitely

the time that I've doubted myself
the most

and doubted my own ability.

Ben must decide on a suitable patch

of clear sky in which to conduct

their flying manoeuvres.

It can be super cloudy
and horrible at Lossiemouth.

You have to be able
to see what you're fighting,

and it would be dangerous
to fight in a cloud -

you increase the risk of a mid-air
collision, probably, exponentially.

With his choice made,

Ben must show that he knows how

to keep his wingman safe
throughout a series of fast

and difficult flying drills.

As the flight lead, you're there
to make sure everything is safe,

you're monitoring your wingman.

You are expected to be able
to fly your aircraft safely

but also recognise potentially

unsafe situations that are
developing around you

and put a stop to those before they
develop into something serious.

Barely into the exercise,

Ben changes his mind
and halts the drill.

Ben now leads Kev below the
cloud-line for better visibility,

but this also means their next
flight will be closer to the ground.

If we're forced lower to the surface

because of heavy clouds,

we will set ourselves
a safety base height

to make sure that we don't
inadvertently crash.

5,000 feet sounds like
a huge buffer zone

but, in a Typhoon,
you'll eat that up in seconds.

You could be flying faster than the
speed of sound going through base

and you'd find yourself in a
situation where you couldn't recover

the aircraft before crashing
into the ground.

And you can't let that happen.

Ben has failed to notice

the training hard deck limit
of 5,000 feet.

In a real war, you would have flown
into the ground.

I think it was a bit shit, actually,
but we'll see.

Difficult to tell really.
But it wasn't great.

You doubt your ability all the time.

You always think you're there
through kind of luck

and you're not necessarily there

because of your own ability
and skill.

I think it could have been
a bit smoother.

I don't like to try and have any

preconceived ideas of how it's gone

because, then, I don't want to be
disappointed

if I think it's gone well and it
hasn't. So, we'll wait and see.

Typhoon pilot Ben Davey is about

to receive feedback on his flight

with commanding officer
of 2 Squadron, Kev Terrett.

OK, let's do it.

First of all, any safety points?

You tell me.

I think my mistake from my cockpit,

I hadn't noticed airborne
that you'd gone through base.

I was 600 feet above
so when I was looking back,

it didn't look like you were
far through base. I wasn't, no.

When you're kind
of leading these things

it's more of knowing where you are.

I'm at base, therefore,

the other jet's below me,
so that's not right. Knock it off.

You've got to get used
to looking after not just yourself,

but you've got to have a think
about what you do to the wingman.

I should have knocked that off
earlier,

or had a bit of forethought
to look into the airspace

we were about to fly into.
Mm-hm.

But I didn't want to make
a bold decision.

No, I understand that
but, you know, you've got to have

the confidence in yourself
to make a decision

and back yourself, you know,
because that's what the job's about.

Part of Ben's training is to try
and build his confidence

and increase his exposure
to different ways of fighting.

It was a great opportunity to go

and do air combat
in that kind of weather

because it was tough today.
Yeah. And that's where you learn.

It's easy money when there's not
a cloud in the sky

so don't take any discomfort

from the fact that it was tough

and there were a couple
of learning points.

For yourself,
thanks for being a gracious wingman.

No worries.

I suspect he might walk away
thinking

that it was a tough day
at the office

but, from my perspective,
that's fantastic learning for him

because I need him
to be able to go out

and beat anyone else out there.

Everyone makes mistakes

and the training environment
is the time to make them.

You normalise what you do,

it becomes the norm to go
and fly a £100 million fighter jet

at 1.8 times the speed of sound
and pull 9G,

but it's definitely high stakes.

The things that we could be asked
to do,

especially with everything

that's happening
in eastern Europe currently,

it's kind of at
the forefront of your mind.

You have to believe that
the people that selected you

and your flying instructors,

obviously, see some level of ability

and you're there
because you're good enough.

Departures.

It's Ben Hoe's first shift
in RAF Akrotiri.

One of the sensors on
the crash gates has gone off

so we're going to go down
and check it out.

It could be someone trying
to get onto camp.

For inspection, report arms.

My job is to be able to use
the SA80 as best I can.

We are gunners.

Our job is to use the rifle

that we have to defend what we need.

To fulfil his ambition to join
a front line regiment,

Ben has had to overcome
a major, personal obstacle.

When I was a young teenager,
I came across a blood disorder

so my body started attacking itself.

If I got injured, I would bleed
and I wouldn't stop.

Any physical activity,
I could not do,

because it was feared that
I wouldn't wake up from it.

I had to stay in bed.
I couldn't go to school.

It was just gut-wrenching.

It could have gone a different way,
where I needed treatment

or I needed my spleen removed,

and I would never have been able
to get into the military.

I was quite overwhelmed
when it happened,

especially getting
the regiment badges,

thinking that I never knew
I could do this or I never thought

I would be able to.

It is a big airfield
with a load of...

A massive perimeter that we have to
patrol so, if we didn't have

the cameras, it'd make our job
a hell of a lot harder.

And if we didn't have the sensors
as well, we wouldn't be able

to do our job properly.
We'd miss loads of things.

the security of the base.

The gate went off, sensor-wise,
so, whilst we're here,

we might as well go down
the perimeter

just looking for any tamper
to the fence

or any sign of someone
being round here recently -

rubbish, car tracks where...
You know, marks like that.

Seven-One, the fence line
is all clear now,

moving to next objective. Over.

Another alarm has just
been triggered.

We've a camera down, back the way.

So, we're going to have to get
a shift on to get to it.

The boss has just said that one of

the cameras at ARABS Gate's
gone down

so just gonna go have a look at it
see what's what with it.

Worst case scenario is someone's
tampered with a camera

to try and get onto camp. If we go
and have a look and it is the cables

are broken, we need to have a look
at, how was it broken?

Has it been cut,
or has it been chewed?

If it's been cut, then,
there's a serious situation

where we know someone else is on
camp and tampering with things.

Camera, isn't it?
It's that, over there. Yeah.

No sign of any physical tamper.

Have the sensors gone off, as well?

No, the sensors haven't gone off.

It's just a camera that's down.
We're just going to have a check.

There's a vehicle coming now.

When we first saw the car,

we immediately thought it was
something related

with why we were there.

You start thinking,
well, why is he here?

You're going round the vehicle
just to make sure, looking in,

just to see if anything looks out
of the ordinary.

Seven-One, roger. Will do.

Seven-One, just spoken to
the driver of the vehicle

and a local fisherman -
showed me his ID and permit.

Over. He's all good.

It was a local man driving close
to the area.

There was no reason to suspect he
was involved in the situation.

If he didn't have ID on him,
it would change drastically,

and we'd try and escort him off
the area or call the SPA Police

to come in and handle,
deal with him.

My mum is worried
when I'm in Cyprus that,

you know, something could happen.
I could take a fall or,

you know,
my body could just go into relapse.

It always sits in
the back of her mind.

It doesn't go away fully.
You know, it could...

You could grow back into it.

You have to make peace with it
because, if it happens,

then you know it happens,
doesn't it?
