DOOR RATTLES

You always have a hope in
a missing persons case

that you're going to find
the person alive.

And there's a lot of times, though,
you're 99.9% sure you're not.

I never expected
to find anyone alive.

I was expecting two bodies
on this property somewhere,

at that point, in my mind.

A missing woman found
chained up in South Carolina...

We have learnt today that
a body has been found

on that property.

Two bodies were found in graves on
Todd Kohlhepp's property.

He confessed to killing
Chris Sherbert, Scott Ponder,

Brian Lucas and Beverly Guy.

We now know seven people may have
died at the hands of Todd Kohlhepp.

I never dreamed this investigation
would turn out like this.

I thought, "How many
more has he killed?"

It is possible that
they could be dealing with

a serial killer in this case.

OK. You're under arrest
right now for kidnapping.

It was almost as if
Todd's Amazon reviews were

foreshadowing the murders
he was committing.

So it's a way to confess
without confessing?

This was actually what he was
buying these items for.

He definitely came across
as charismatic,

people thought he was funny,
he would crack jokes.

He owns a business,
people work with him,

people know him, he's liked.

You have this charming,
professional, successful person,

so no-one sees what's underneath.

The killer who lived among us.

It's hard to even fathom that

someone who was hiding in plain
sight was the person responsible.

I'm Dr Jameca Woody Cooper,
and I am a counselling psychologist

and criminal psychology consultant.

Todd's early years were really
described as difficult.

He's often described as disturbed
as a young child - angry, explosive.

Very impulsive
and very poor social skills.

That might not be very different
from other children.

What's different from him, though,
is the extremes of the anger

and the extremes of the explosion -
what he does when he's angry,

destroying things.

And his mother also described him as
quite sensitive, a sensitive child.

In other words, if his feelings
were hurt, they were REALLY hurt.

And now, because you have
the anger and the explosion,

put them both together - sensitive,
and now I have to do something bad.

This is a pattern he showed
for most of his life.

He learnt at an early age how to
not feel badly about harming things.

So he probably started with animals -
which is not uncommon, actually -

shooting a dog with a BB gun.

And I think that was a telltale
sign as he was growing up,

that, you know,
there's something going on here.

And that comes from
his lack of attachment -

he didn't have a father that
was there, father had left.

And I think also the fact
that he was a bit of

a bully at school -
he picked on kids,

he was often getting into trouble,

and that was another warning sign
that there's something wrong here.

I think there was probably
an overreaction.

They ended up placing him
into a facility, a psych facility,

for a few months and that probably
was a real turning point for him,

to be locked up.

That really stamped on him there was
something seriously wrong with him

and he learnt to accept that label.

And, of course, they tell him
what to do and how to do it

and when to do it.

He has no control
for all this time he's locked up.

When he's released, we know
he's getting to a point

where he's fantasising about
wanting to be in control,

which is very common
amongst serial offenders.

Psychopathy is all about control.

As we define psychopathy,
it's the need for control.

He told his mum at one point -
whenever he was an adolescent,

around 12 years old -
that he wanted to go live

with his biological father because
his biological father had left him

and his mother
right after he was born.

And he told his mum if
he couldn't go out to Arizona,

across the country,
and live with his biological father,

that he would either kill her
or kill himself.

So she ended up letting him
move out with his father.

When he moved out to his father's,
he had even more freedom

to do whatever he wanted.

So while his mum tried
to control his behaviour

but eventually gave in,
his father would be gone

for two or three days at a time,
leaving a 15-year-old home alone

to do whatever he wanted.

And this is someone who already
had these violent tendencies,

aggressive behaviour.

He had narcissistic
personality disorder,

borderline personality disorder.

His family knew about this well
before he ever committed one crime.

In the town of Arizona,
they probably hadn't seen

other adolescents that
acted and behaved

in the ways that Todd did.

And in those respects, he's
a bit isolated and disconnected.

So it escalates as he becomes
a teen to more angry,

more rebellious
and also now violent.

So now we've seen this violence
toward animals move

to violence toward people.

Todd was about 15 years old
when he was living with his father.

He hadn't committed any real
crimes at that point, but that was

when he did commit his first
really extremely violent crime.

He went over to
his neighbour's house.

She was 14 years old at that time.

She was babysitting her siblings
and he knocked on the door.

She answered, basically said,
"I can't come out,"

but he didn't stop.
He went around to the back.

He kept knocking and saying,
"Please come out, please come out."

So just to basically get
rid of him, she comes outside.

He holds a gun to her and forces
her to come over to his house.

And it was there that he bound her,
duct-taped her and raped her.

The girl's brother, who was home
at the time, called the police.

The police showed up.

And Todd even talks
about it himself -

he was considering killing her,
but he doesn't.

That sort of crime is almost
beyond comprehensible

for anyone, not to mention
someone at 15 years old.

The fact that he was able to
execute this extremely violent

crime all in succession
like that is extremely scary,

and I think set off a lot of
alarm bells in the community,

for his family, and also should
have for investigators -

someone that young to be able to
torture a young girl that much

is just terrifying, yeah.

He admitted what he did,
and he said he did it

to get back at his father because his
father had been gone for three days

with one of his many girlfriends.

And he admitted that what he did
was wrong, he shouldn't have done it,

but he said the reason why he did it
was because he was mad at his dad.

When Todd Kohlhepp went
to prison, he was 15 years old

and they went back and forth
in the court proceedings

if he should be tried as an adult or
as a child since he was 15 years old.

After much examination with
psychiatrists, they determined

that nothing that they could do
in the short span of time

from 15 until 18 years old, that
they would be able to do anything

to rehabilitate him,

so he was sent off to
prison as an adult.

The nature of his crime was
so heinous that 15 years was

a suitable amount of time for
him to be serving in prison.

There were discussions
of him even going away

for longer than that.

I think everybody agreed that there
was a very extreme, sadistic nature

to this person, and that it was
something that began at such

a young age and was
a consistent pattern.

It WAS something that was
picked up on from the time he was,

you know, seven, eight years old.

It seems by all accounts,
everyone involved in that -

his legal team, the judge -
everyone could easily see

that he was really disturbed.

They could also easily see that
he was not showing any remorse.

That is a huge sign of
what could happen

if this person gets back
out into society.

With Todd's parole hearing,
there seemed to be some individuals

involved in the psychological
evaluation that really

saw some issues with him.

They could easily see that this
is a really disturbed person.

In fact, the psychological
evaluation said that he is

very disturbed, and the time that
he spent here is not enough

to rehabilitate or treat him.

On the other hand,
once he served his time,

he's not displaying behaviour
that would keep him in jail.

He's not answering questions that
would signal that something

is deeply wrong with him.

So, of course, no-one has
any reason at this point

to keep him in jail.

If he's served his time, they feel,
hey, he's now ready

to enter the community.

We hope when someone is
released from prison

that they've made changes.

And when a man says he's changed,
well, we know one thing for sure -

he's lying.

Because when they tell you
they've changed, they're trying

to convince you of something
that hasn't happened yet.

Because change requires
suffering and pain,

and time and effort and sacrifice.

And most men, rather than change,
they just want to cut to the chase

and get back to normal again,
so they say they've changed.

Certainly, he could blend in
back into society and say,

"I did some prison time,
but I'm a changed man."

"Oh, that's wonderful," because
the public wants to believe

that people have changed.

Yeah, that didn't happen.

He was released.
He was 30 years old.

He had been in prison for the same
amount of time that he was alive.

So for anyone to think that
that won't completely shape

and affect the way that somebody
acts once they're out of prison,

to me, makes absolutely no sense.

And for somebody who was
already so violent in nature

and then served all this time
in prison, to be released

into society without any
checks or balances after that

is really alarming and scary.

He had come out of prison
and he ended up earning his GED

and his associate's degree.

It seemed like he was motivated
to go and become

a productive member of society.

He got out in 2001, and then
shortly after moved back here

to Spartanburg, South Carolina.

He decided he wanted to
get his bachelor's degree,

so he finished up some classes
at a local technical college

and then transferred to the
University of South Carolina Upstate,

which is also in Spartanburg.

And he graduated at
the top of his class.

It seemed, from the outside,
he really was trying

to do everything the right way,
trying to kind of make up

for those past mistakes
and move on, I guess,

to start a new life, start fresh.

Truthfully, ever since
he was released from prison,

he absolutely lived a double life.

He was already hiding his violent
crime from the beginning.

In the small suburban areas
of Greenville and Spartanburg,

there's a lot of neighbourhoods,
a lot of houses

that are close together.

You also have some that are spread
apart, but the neighbourhoods,

the people who live on the same
street, they really know each other.

They know each other's business,
they know what's going on.

Even if they don't talk
to that neighbour,

they know what's going
on at their house.

They keep an eye on
their neighbours' homes.

It's just very, you know, quiet.

A lot of these areas,
specifically Woodruff and Chesney,

those are very, very
small communities.

When I grew up here,
it felt very safe.

I think a lot of people that live in
the small towns around here

have a sense of security
that, you know,

nothing's going to happen here,
nothing's going to happen

in my neighbourhood or in my town.

And I hear that so often -
"This is not the kind of thing

"that happens here."

My name is Melissa Brackman.
I am a fourth-grade teacher.

I met Scott in my late 20s.

I was working in the motorcycle
industry out of Arizona.

He had a motorcycle dealership
in South Carolina,

and we met at a dealer
show in Indianapolis.

We corresponded - you know,
text messaging, phone calls -

and it just grew into
something more.

And I ended up moving
to South Carolina about

a year after I met him.

When we got married,
I was 29 and he was 28,

and we both were kind of feeling
the need of, we need to...

It's time to start a family,
you know?

We did all of our fun stuff
in our 20s and now it's time.

And we were actually visiting
Arizona at the time -

I was seeing my parents
and I wasn't feeling that great.

I decided, because I just
wasn't feeling very good,

I'll take a pregnancy test
and just see and sure enough,

it was the first positive
pregnancy test I've ever seen.

My brother likes to say that
he looked over at Scott

and Scott was smiling because
he knew what was going on,

you know, and that's... So he knew.

I came running out
with my...my stick, you know,

and, yeah, it was just...
It was really exciting.

When we got back to South Carolina
from our trip to Arizona,

we had our first
doctor's appointment.

We both were so excited when
we heard the heartbeat

cos we had never experienced
anything like that.

And so that was very,
very exciting for us.

Scott started liking motorcycles
from a very, very young age,

and it never left him.
That's all he ever wanted to do.

And, also, building his dealership
became a big deal, too.

He actually expanded
the dealership when he met me.

He added the Suzuki franchise
when he met me.

I have some pictures
of his grandma in here.

She doted on Scott.
She loved Scott.

She wanted to be around him, she was
very proud of everything he did,

and she worked at the motorcycle
dealership with Scott.

Pictures of us meeting,
some of the dates we went on...

This picture here that Scott
took of me holding up

my pregnancy sticks,
telling everybody that I'm pregnant.

Scott actually took those pictures.

And then I have
my first ultrasound here.

I look at these pictures and
I feel a lot of pride in the fact

that he accomplished so much
in such a short amount of time.

My perception of Todd Kohlhepp
is that he is narcissistic.

It's not that he loves himself,
but he likes to be in control

and he likes to feel
like he's in charge.

And it's about him -
everything is about him.

And I think when
you are a narcissist,

there's a wound that
you can receive.

It can come very easily
from somebody else,

and that narcissistic wound
will drive them for revenge.

It could be something small -
a small slight.

It was all about the wounding
and the narcissism.

It's a different type of
offender than we often see.

One of the things that is common
with personality disorders -

either the narcissistic personality
disorder or the borderline,

and Todd's been described as having
either one at different times -

and both of those come
with some mood instability.

He also had these additional
issues of the anger

and not being able to control it.

When combined, a horrible equation.

So it always, with him,
ends in the rage,

so he always has
the tendency to act explosively.

It's very difficult to be able
to look at someone in their eyes

and see those sort of
deeply-rooted issues,

because what he shows us on the
outside is a professional person.

They're not seeing
the other parts of him.

So even on the days that they
made him feel embarrassed at

the Superbike store,
I'm sure they didn't even realise

that he was deeply hurt and felt
that he needed to get revenge.

It was any other normal day for us.

So I got up, started getting ready
for work, and I just remember

passing by the dealership and him
blowing me a kiss and me waving.

I had told him, "I'm going to
head out there later.

"I just have a few things I need
to do," and he said, "OK."

I started heading to the business.

I was going to drop
some of this stuff off.

And my phone rang, and it
was his credit card vendor

and she was trying to
get to his business.

She said, "I'm trying to get up
to the dealership, but I can't.

"There's law enforcement everywhere.

"They've blocked off the road,
there's helicopters... It's just...

"It's a frenzy up here."

And she said, "You know,
I kind of heard somebody saying

"there might have been
a shooting at the dealership."

She's like, "I think you
should get up here."

So I hung up, turned my car around.

I called his cell phone, then
I would call the dealership phone,

then I would call his cell phone,
call the dealership phone,

and they all just went
straight to voicemail.

There was no getting ahold of him.

I pulled up to this big stop
in the road where there's

law enforcement everywhere,
probably 20 cars.

And I pulled my car over to
the side, I got out of the car,

and I just started running
past everyone to

try to get down to the dealership,
but they had the road blocked off

to where you couldn't
see down there.

So I started running,
a cop started running after me,

came, grabbed me and said,
"You can't go down there."

And I said, "Well, that's
my husband's business."

And he said, "Your husband
owns the business?"

And I told him who I was,
and he said,

"OK, just stand over here to
the side. Give me a minute."

So he called somebody on
the phone and he said,

"I have the wife of the owner with
me, and what do you want me

"to do with her?" And so they
told him to bring me home.

I got to my house.

He told me, "Don't turn on the TV,
don't turn on the radio,"

and for two and a half hours,
I knew nothing.

We found four individuals.
They were all dead.

They had appeared to have been shot.

NEWSREADER: Investigators say
a customer found the bodies.

6.30pm, I saw a coroner.

I was staring out my front window,
and I saw the coroner

drive up the road
and up my driveway.

They came in, they asked me to
sit down and they just proceeded

to tell me that today, something
very unfortunate happened down at

your husband's business.

"Somebody came in,
they shot and killed everyone,

"including your husband."

I immediately - I mean,
completely broken -

asked for my mother-in-law.

And I said, "Well, I need to know.
I need to talk to Beverly.

"Where is she? I need,
I need to talk to her.

"She has to be a mess right...
You know, what...?"

And they told me that
she was one of the victims

and she was also killed with him.

People were completely shocked.
Nobody knew who could have done this.

So much so, that people that
were friends were put on

the radar as suspects.

No-one had any clue who did this.

This turned out to be this
mystery that just kind of

lurked around this town,
not knowing if the person

that lived beside you
could have done this.

There weren't many violent crimes
happening in this community at all,

especially not homicides.

So when the Superbike
Murders happened,

I mean, it was
a quadruple homicide.

It absolutely shook the community.

It was hard to believe for most
people, especially at that time.

The Superbike Motorsports murders.

Four people were shot and killed
inside that motorcycle shop

in Chesney on November 6th, 2003.

Detectives have launched
a new search for a suspect in

the case of four people murdered
in an upstate motorcycle shop.

A shooter entered this Suzuki
dealership and killed the owner,

Scott Ponder, his mother,
Beverly Guy, and two mechanics,

Brian Lucas and Chris Sherbert.

They believe an angry customer may
have committed those murders.

Yes, they do, and they're asking
anyone who knows about an angry

customer of the Superbike
Motorsports dealership

to give them a call.

Investigators say that robbery
was not the motive for this crime.

They say that the person who did
this was definitely out for murder.

My name is William Gary.

I retired from the Spartanburg
County Sheriff's Office after

a little bit over 28 years
working there,

with 24 of those being
in investigations.

The majority of that working
violent crimes,

which includes homicides
and other violent crimes.

In Spartanburg as a whole,
I think most people feel safe.

We can be a very rural county
away from the downtown area.

There are several municipalities
within the county,

but it still can have a small-town
feel in a lot of places.

Whenever you have four people
that are killed at one time,

yeah, it's a big shock.

And, you know, everybody
wants answers fairly quickly,

but that doesn't always happen.

It became fairly evident

to us that it probably was directly
related to the business itself,

and not something that just
happened randomly,

because if he wanted to kill
other people than the owners,

he had plenty of opportunity to do
so, especially people that saw him.

Cos now you've got people
that see him - and at least one

that we KNOW saw him -
so if you're going to do something

that random and that's your goal,
then you're going to do something

to those customers as well,
and, of course, those witnesses.

I was looking at the last year's
worth of used bike sales,

because they were shipping
a lot of bikes across the country.

And so those bikes, a lot of people
were buying them sight unseen.

They would see the pictures,
all of that, they would buy them,

but then there were
several in there where

the customers were angry when
they received these motorcycles

and found damage to
frames or other things.

Quite honestly, to me, somebody
buying a new bike, I didn't really

see a reason that they would
be upset with the shop.

Which, come to find out, that was
what Todd Kohlhepp had done.

He'd bought a brand-new bike
from them, and one of

the first things that we did
was send out letters

to customers asking about any
information, and, of course,

he received one of those.

Had they looked at that list, they
could have seen that Todd Kohlhepp

was a registered sex offender.

He was someone who had served
15 years in prison for raping a girl

whenever he was just 15 years old.

But it was never followed up on,
so he was actually

never even interviewed.
He was never a suspect.

You know, honestly, it kind of is
the old adage that, you know,

if you were fairly thorough in
your early investigation, odds are -

in an unsolved homicide -
your suspect's name

is probably somewhere
in your case file.

Everybody was very invested
in this crime as a whole,

and I feel like the community
wanted to see a resolution here,

and the longer this went on...

..it just became harder
and harder to believe

that anything would be solved.

I don't know if anybody ever
completely gave up on it

at the sheriff's office.

I know when I was working on it,
I never did, but I told a number

of people, this is going to take
some luck, but hard work

can generate luck.

And, you know, there was a lot
of work put into this case from

a number of different people,
and different agencies as well.

And, you know, it's frustrating
because people don't become

a cop to not catch the bad guy.

You don't become an investigator
not to be able to close a case.

You do it because you like the job
and you want to right the wrongs

and catch the people.

Several behaviourists that
I'd spoken with, working the case,

told me that if you run across
somebody whose life

kind of went downhill soon after
this, that's probably your suspect,

because a normal person doing
something like this wouldn't

be able to deal with it very well.

Well, after Superbike,
he actually went up in stature,

in life and all of that.

It was, you know,
there was no spiralling.

In 2006, Todd decides to apply
for a real-estate licence,

but on that application,
he actually lies about

the nature of his crime
that he committed,

saying that it was actually
a dispute between him

and a girlfriend rather than
a violent sexual assault,

and that's how he's able
to get his licence.

So he moves forward.

He works in real estate,
he's a real go-getter.

He really builds a name
for himself in the community.

He starts his own brokerage
named after himself.

He employs 12 agents or so
and becomes successful,

in his own right, in this new career
that he's carved out for himself.

He definitely came across
as charismatic.

I think people thought he was funny,
he would crack jokes.

He was someone who also was
a reliable guy from the community.

But also, you know, his criminal
history was not something that

people knew about, I don't think.

It wasn't something that was
disclosed while he was working.

I wouldn't feel comfortable knowing
that my real estate broker had

committed this crime
and was lying to me about it

and lying to the board about it.

DOGS BARK

Right, my name is Michael Foster.
I'm a father of eight kids.

I've been married to
my wife for 20 years.

I'm a bi-vocational pastor.

In 2014, I took a job as
a director of outreach

and discipleship at
a small Presbyterian church.

So we moved from Indiana
down to Spartanburg.

Didn't know anything about
Spartanburg, but we moved there.

At the time, I think we had six
kids, something like that.

Spartanburg is, in my personal
opinion, it's close to

a lot of places I want to visit,
but I wouldn't ever

want to visit Spartanburg.

You're, like, two hours away from
Atlanta, close to the mountains

up in Asheville, North Carolina.

Not too far from, like,
Myrtle Beach or whatever.

But Spartanburg itself is kind of
boring. It's a little run-down.

BIRD CHIRPS

There wasn't a lot out there,
and we kept coming back

to this one house that was in
the Twin Lakes Housing development.

It was really big
and it was all overgrown.

There was kudzu everywhere.

There was a bunch of cats
running around the property

and it looked pretty rough,

so I started looking somewhere else,
and the days just kept running down.

And in the end, that was the
only place I could fit my family,

so we moved there.

At first it all seemed pretty
normal, but as I was leaving,

my previous landlord,
I talked to her and she said,

"So, did you find
somewhere to live?"

I'm like, "Yeah. Didn't the landlord
call you and check references?"

She was like, "We didn't get calls."

So then I pulled my credit to
see if there was any credit hits

on my CBR, or my credit bureau
report, and there was...

No-one had ran my credit, no-one
had checked any of my references

and I thought that
was a little odd.

And I thought, "Well, maybe I just
made a really good impression

"on this guy or something."

That kind of stuck out to me
and I remember telling my wife that.

I also remember that I met
with him before my wife did

and she said,
"What's your opinion of him?"

And I said, "Well, he's got
a really big personality,

"and he seems like the sort of guy
that if you don't manage him,

"he'll certainly manage you."

And that is how Todd was wired.

For someone like him -
and for "someone like him",

I mean, narcissistic personality
disorder and disturbed -

a person like that is going to,
on the outside,

be very charming, very likeable,
but also very egotistical.

So he's going to talk
about himself.

He's going to feel as though
he's better than other people,

often entitled and bragging.

And I think the people he did
business with and the people

he knew just expected that of
him and really overlooked it,

so no-one sees what's underneath.

Todd was pretty personable.

All my interactions with him
were pretty normal.

He liked to talk about how
successful he was

and how he's buying all this
property and making millions

or whatever, so he could be
very braggadocious, right?

And then he would talk about
how he had trouble

with other realtors
and things like that

and how people were kind
of holding him back.

He would swing real
quick from being like,

"I'm the king of the world,"
to, "I'm oppressed,"

or something like that -

a victim mindset would arise
in conversations that were...

..that started about things like,
you know, "I need to fix my Hvac"

or, "There's too much kudzu,"
you know, so you start with kudzu

and end with this guy who's awesome,
but also being held down, you know?

I know a lot of men like Todd,
a lot of guys that, you know,

they're not able to hold down
a relationship or they're on

the verge of being something bigger,
they desire to be something big.

And you can see, you know,
you could see anger in Todd,

you could see frustration in him,
and, again,

that idea that he's a victim being
held back or whatever.

No, I think I know
a lot of guys like that.

There were some red flags with
some of Todd Kohlhepp's clients.

He had had three or four complaints
filed against him with the board

of real estate in South Carolina
that had been looked into.

Turns out that he was cleared
of any wrongdoing.

There were also some people that
he worked with that said that

he would do things like watch
pornography at work.

He said weird things.

He said things that made
people feel a little uneasy.

He would joke about guns
and talking about hiding bodies,

things that people kind of
thought was a little weird.

But at the same time, I don't
believe that anyone thought that,

"Oh, this is our..." you know,
"..neighbourhood serial killer

"that I'm talking to right now."

So we had been in the house,
I'd say, at least, like, six weeks.

We had this sunroom that
was connected to the front of

the house that was
really dilapidated.

And part of that is it had
a sliding door that to open it,

you had to pull really hard
and it made this terrible,

like, shrieking-like noise.

So we didn't do anything
with that room,

and we never came into
the house through that.

And the door had been about
that open for, you know,

the whole time we were there.

You know, I moved it, like, an inch
and just moving it was really hard.

CRICKETS CHIRP, OMINOUS MUSIC PLAYS

One night, I'm laying in bed
and I wake up to hear

what I thought was a noise.

And then, like, seconds later,
my oldest son, Hudson,

comes in next to the bed
and he says, "Someone's trying

"to get into the sunroom!"

So I go ahead and grab
a big old flashlight

and grab my Mossberg shotgun,
and I don't see anything.

But then I go and I look at
that door and I'm like,

"Man, I think that door
is like this much."

It had been moved several inches,
you know, maybe four inches.

And so I came back
and I thought, "That's crazy.

"It seems like someone was trying
to get through that door."

One of the first things
I always recommend is that you

need to be looking at
their social media posts,

because if there's narcissism,
they're going to post things

because they want people
to know who they are,

and that they're smarter
than everybody else.

And sometimes you'll slip up
and say something that will raise

a red flag among law enforcement,

especially if they're narcissistic -
they can't resist

putting something on the internet.

Todd was making posts on Facebook
that really did seem to exhibit

his aggressive behaviour,
and the way that he felt

violent towards other people.

He would make references to
being angry at bad drivers

and what he was going to do to them.

He just seemed to
really like violence

and talk about it frequently.

And he also seemed to harbour
a lot of aggression towards people

that he felt had wronged him,
even if it was something

as small as a driver honking at him.

There seemed to be
a theme with Todd, online,

of retaliation, how you
should interact with people,

how you should respond to people,
treat them this way.

Show your power to children, to
immigrants, to people on the road.

And there were a few different
instances of the road rage,

which does signal some really
deeply disturbing issues

that probably no-one
saw as disturbing.

We live in a world, in a society,
where so many comments and posts

are made on social media
like that every day

that are just run-of-the-mill.

They're trolls, they're bots,
and people just don't take

them seriously, when in fact there
really could be red flags there.

On the outside, he appeared kind of
normal, maybe a little strange,

but no-one thought that
he was doing what he was doing

behind closed doors.

You definitely see this theme
throughout his adulthood of...

Again, you have this charming,
professional, successful person -

in his mind, that brings him here.
He's elevated. He's better than.

So when he hires these employees to
work with him with his real estate,

he hires people to clean
and do things around his land,

all of these people are beneath him.

So for a person like Todd with
that personality structure,

"If you're beneath me,
I expect you to act that way."

And so when any of these people act
as though they challenge his power,

that's when the issues show up.

In 2015, he hires this couple,
Meagan and Johnny Coxie,

to do some house maintenance
for him and, you know,

it seems like a perfectly innocuous
job for them to be doing.

People that worked with Meagan
said Todd Kohlhepp would

come in there pretty frequently.

The women that worked there were
so creeped out by him that

the male server had to start
taking Todd's order.

REPORTER: Meagan and Johnny Coxie
went missing December of 2015.

The couple had been seen
panhandling near I-26,

but before that, Meagan was working
at this Roebuck Waffle House.

It was unlike Meagan not to stay
in contact with her mother.

So once her mother had tried
multiple times and was unsuccessful,

that's when she filed a missing
persons report with us.

The married couple was
first reported missing from

Spartanburg County in December 2015.

Tonight, those who knew them
are looking for answers.

It wasn't as highly publicised
as other disappearances.

I think this is because sometimes
they would just leave

for days or weeks at a time,
and even their families

at first believed that they had just
left for a few days, they'll be back.

Well, they never came back.

We got a news release about it.

I remember receiving a news release,
but it wasn't something that was

highly publicised
because I think at first,

no-one actually thought
that they were missing.

With investigators, sometimes
it's just that sixth sense

that something just
doesn't sit right.

And that really can come
with experience,

and with applying common
sense to certain things.

But missing person cases
can be very challenging.

I was the sergeant of
the unit when that came in

and I assigned it to one of
the investigators to work on.

There was really nothing
to indicate,

other than them just vanishing,

of where they might have been
or anything of that nature.

If you get to where you really
have nothing to run down,

it does just kind of sit there
in the hope that some

information comes in.

Meagan and Johnny Coxie had
been missing almost a year

by the point in 2016 when a couple
from Anderson goes missing.

They go missing on August 31st,
2016, they left their apartment

and they hadn't been seen since.

These were two people that did
not have a history of going away

for weeks, days at a time.

Charlie Carver had
a job that he worked...

He even worked overtime a good bit.
He worked all the time.

They talked to their families -
both of them talked to

their families pretty frequently.
They talked to their friends.

Charlie Carver talked to
his sister every single day.

So within a couple of days, their
families start growing concerned.

So Charlie Carver's mum
goes over to their apartment,

knocks on the door, no-one's there.

She gets the manager to go in
because she thinks at this point,

something is not right.

She knows her son.
He wouldn't just leave.

They go in, they find Kala Brown's
dog was in the house but hadn't

been fed for several days,
so the dog's neglected.

This was the first big red flag.

This instantly becomes something
that blows up into a big story.

This couple's missing, we get a press
release about it pretty soon after

and that's when news coverage starts.

A concerned mother reported her son,
Charles David Carver, missing.

Two days later, a concerned friend
also arrived on Anderson Police's

steps to report Kala Brown,
Charlie's girlfriend, also missing.

The two live in this
apartment building,

but haven't been seen for nine days.

Family and friends are hoping
these fliers will help.

This is just so out of
character of him.

So if anybody knows anything,
please call and leave a tip.

Officers still haven't
found Carver's car.

While the search continues, family
members haven't given up hope.

They just want some answers.

Just trying to keep it together,
cos I'm not going to get anywhere

if I fall apart, so there's
time for that later.

I moved to Anderson, South Carolina
when I was six years old.

Charlie was born in 1983,
in Anderson.

He enjoyed hanging out with friends,
listening to music,

he played football in high school,
just your normal, normal person.

When he first went missing,
it was a lot of...unknown.

Didn't know what was going on.

He was very close to family,
so that wasn't like him.

For...

First week, you know,
we knew something was wrong,

because he always told us
when he was going out of town

and that kind of thing.

My first thought was
he had a wreck somewhere

and he was hurt, lying somewhere,
and nobody knew where he was.

So just like the Superbike Murders,
when something horrible like that

happens in this small community,
it's major news.

It's what everyone's talking about.
Everyone's scared and worried.

So then when these young
couples start going missing,

the community is terrified.

They want answers. They want to
understand what's going on,

because big events like this
just aren't normal,

and they definitely shouldn't be
happening in succession like this.

There were missing persons
fliers posted around

their apartment complex,
posted around the community.

There were even meetings -
I know I attended at least

one or two of them -
where families and friends

had gotten together to
talk about the search.

What are they going to do
next to look for them?

This was a big deal.

You couldn't really go anywhere in
that community without seeing

a flier posted up somewhere.

It was concerning because
it's just an average couple,

early 30-year-olds,
and they just seem to have walked

out of their apartment
and vanished.

Meagan and Johnny Coxie,

a married couple
that have been missing

from Spartanburg County
for almost a year.

The two were reported missing
from Spartanburg County

in December last year.

A second couple,
Charlie Carver and Kala Brown,

were last seen seven weeks ago
by family and friends.

The last time Charlie Carver or
Kala Brown were heard from

was in text message
early last week.

Anderson Police don't know whether
or not something happened to them,

but their families
just want them back home.

My name is Charlynn Ezell.

2010, I went to work for

the Anderson City Police Department
here in South Carolina.

Charlie Carver was last seen
on August 31st of 2016.

His parents made a report
on September 3rd,

and Kayla's missing persons report
was taken on September 5th of 2016.

The initial reports that I was given

is that patrol officers
had actually made entry

into their residence,
which was an apartment complex,

it was an apartment,
and that their dog was there,

had no food or water,
had been there for some time,

as well as things were thawing,
chicken thawing on the counter.

It looked like someone
was supposed to come back home

in a certain amount of time,
and they had not.

Something just did not feel right
about this one.

Typically, I can make phone calls

and go to different locations
and things

and put pieces together like that
initially

that leads me to the person,

to let me know we can close
the case.

But this was not the case.

Immediately by the dog
being left there for so long

and food thawing,

that was a big red flag

that we usually don't have
with other missing persons cases.

You're just calling cellphones,
constantly trying to, you know,

"Hey, where are you?
Call me back."

Going by his apartment
because he lived...

..he lived, like, less than a mile
from where we lived,

so he was just up the road.

And I'd go by
in different times of the day

and see if he was at home, you know,

maybe showed back up,
didn't call,

but, uh...you know,
just a lot of unanswered questions.

You know, you go through
all the different emotions.

You're upset, you want answers.

The police won't give you answers

because they're doing
an investigation,

and at that time,
everybody's a suspect.

I got frustrated,
because I was like,

"OK, we need to do more.
You know what?

"You know,
tell me what you're doing,"

and we didn't get those answers.

We call for what's called
search warrants.

We take those to a judge,

and we give them
what evidence we have

that we believe these people
have indeed gone missing.

With phone search warrants,

since we do not have
the actual handset

that would tell us
a lot more information,

we have phone records
that will tell us locations.

Most cellphones ping
every couple of minutes off towers

without even realising it,

wherever you go,
so the locations are there.

Text messages, Facebook messages,

any kind of messaging apps.

Some of the first search warrants
that came through

were phone search warrants.

We were able to pull up
different locations

that we found that they were
on that day together,

and we found that they made
their way to Moore, South Carolina.

And there were just
dozens and dozens of pings

from both of their cellphones

on a piece of property
that was a 95-acre farm.

And the phones had been there
all day long,

so we knew, that, you know,
we had something there.

I recalled a tip that had come in,
I believe, on Crime Stoppers,

someone had called it in

and said that Kayla and David
were buried

on a 95-acre farm in Spartanburg.

So when I put
those two things together,

we were very interested
in this property.

The further we went into
the investigation,

we started hearing rumours
about a piece of property.

And I'm like...

I didn't know anybody
in Spartanburg per se

that wasn't family

and had never heard of
this piece of property.

I was present at the meeting
when we first met with Anderson

and in working the case,

they had come up
with some information

with their investigation that could
have led with Todd Kohlhepp.

They wanted to
try to do some searches

the first time we met with them,
but we didn't have quite enough.

Yeah, they had location of their
phones in the area of the farm.

That's all we had.

And a lot of times
with historical cellphone records,

they're not going to give you
an exact location.

They will tell you,
OK, this tower, this sector.

So far from that sector
or that tower,

but that could be 1,600 metre
radius.

So you're looking at a mile
each direction.

That's a huge area.

We were all waiting at that point

for Facebook and Messenger
to come back.

Immediately, I knew that
I had something big

once we had those messages between
Kohlhepp and Kala Brown.

She had known him for years,
she met him years prior.

About a week before,
she needed some money,

and she offered for her
and her boyfriend Charlie

to go to the property
and do some work for Kohlhepp,

cleaning up the properties
and things like that for money.

And we actually had messages
all the way up to the morning of.

They were communicating
of where to go, where to meet.

She and Charlie went to his house,

and Kohlhepp took them from there
to the property.

At that point,
he became my number-one suspect.

They look up Todd Kohlhepp,
realise he's a real estate agent.

They also find out that
he was a registered sex offender.

He had served 15 years in prison
as a teen for raping a girl,

and at that point they start
doing surveillance on the property.

They do a flyover
in the county helicopter.

They wanted to see if they could
see Charlie's car from above,

since his car was still missing.

That's what they were driving
when they disappeared.

They couldn't see it,

but they did notice
that there was a garage

and a couple shipping containers
on the land.

During this time, someone had
taken over Charlie's Facebook page

and was making dozens of statements
on Facebook.

So during that time, I had
a lot of things to investigate,

to make sure that they weren't,
in fact,

just wanting to be left alone.

There was something with a quote
from an Eagles song,

Hotel California.

There were things just
kind of alluding

that something wasn't right.

Then someone gets on his Messenger
and starts messaging people.

Family and friends said,
"This isn't right."

This is not Charlie -
the person had bad grammar,

they could tell
this wasn't him typing.

Certain family members kept saying,
"Well, if it's you,

"just video call us right now
so we can see you.

"All we want to know
is that you're OK."

The person would never do it.

So you have all these strange
messages coming from his page.

You have strange, very cryptic
Facebook posts popping up.

That just became a bigger issue,

and I think even drew the interest
in this case even more,

because people just knew
something just wasn't right.

I go back to Spartanburg County

to see, at that point,
if I have enough evidence

for the judge to sign
a search warrant for the property.

And I want to go talk with Kohlhepp,

so my plan was to have
two search warrants,

one for Kohlhepp's home...

..and one for the property.

And I wanted,
that morning that I went,

to wake Kohlhepp up

so he would not be able
to get a phone call

from neighbours of
the Moore property

or anything like that to
maybe tip him off

that I was going to send
a crew over there.

So at that point we had a date,
it was going to be November 3rd.

We were going to wake him up
that morning,

and at the same time,
as soon as he comes to the door,

we were going to execute
the search warrant on the property.

When we woke Kohlhepp up
that morning

and I got him to the door,

I had very specific questions
that I wanted to ask him.

So when I started questioning
Kohlhepp,

he acted and appeared like
he had no clue what was going on,

and I started asking him
the very specific questions

on what happened,
when was the last time he saw them,

how long they stayed
on the property.

He continued to talk,
he continued to tell me everything

which was opposite
of what I already knew.

I signalled for
the detective off site

that this is going to be our guy,
this is going to be the one,

and he knows a whole lot more
than what he's telling us.

Based on the fact that you were
the last person to see them,

they had contacted us for
an assisting an agency report, OK?

And through that,
as a standard practice,

we follow the lines... Yes, sir.
..like she explained.

And they did the search warrants,
OK?

With the cellphones and everything.

And based on information,

and that's what I was just talking
to was my supervisor,

based on the information
that we received,

and that he's received,
we have a search warrant, OK? OK.

For your residence and your car.
OK. OK?

We are mainly looking
for your cellphone, OK?

I had another person
that was on the case with me,

to assist me,

and he called me while
I was inside the residence.

He kept saying, "We hear something,
we hear something.

"We hear a tapping."

I don't know, at that point, I have
no clue what he's talking about.

I'm like, "OK, I don't know
what you're talking about,

"but if you get something,
let me know."

Because...I never expected
to find anyone alive.

I was expecting two bodies
on this property somewhere

at that point in my mind.

Watch out, y'all move.

I got a second phone call
from the property

saying that they found Kayla
and she was chained in a box.

She had been tapping.

I could not believe
that she was alive.

All right,
this is where we're at, Mr Kohlhepp.

While we were here, all right,

my sergeant served a search warrant
on your property.

OK? We have Kayla.

Excuse me?

We have Kayla.

In your property.

She was locked in a container, OK?

When Todd Kohlhepp was
finally caught,

in other words,
they found the last victim,

who was still alive, they had him,
and he knew there's no way out it,

it didn't bother him, because
he's not afraid of the consequences.

He knew it was the next step.

I've seen several offenders
over the years do that,

where they,
"OK, so I'm going to be caught,

"now what's the next step?
I can play games with them."

But the fear factor is not there.

For him, it was,
"OK, let's do this."

OK, why did you lock her in
a container on your property?

I don't know
what you're talking about.

She's on your property right now,
locked in a container.

They just got her out of a...
they called it a...

Shipping container? Conex box.

She was locked in a container,
in a Conex box.

They got her, we have investigators,

we have like 20 investigators
on your property right now.

OK.

And they have found her
in the Conex box.

So she never left your property.

The calmness that Todd displayed
during the arrest,

and after immediately,
is power, control.

Now he has commanded the attention
of the authorities,

they need him, because they're
trying to find the details,

they're trying to find the answers,
the bodies.

It's like a spotlight moment
for him.

So you're saying
you didn't lock her up?

You didn't put her in
a Conex box or anything?

No, sir.

I'm going to need an attorney.

Probably a good thing.

Go ahead and put him in
the back of your car.

Sir. Get him up.

Yes, sir, I will in a second,

I got a call from my news director
that day,

and she was hysterical.

"The girl that's been missing,
the couple,

"they've just found the girl
in a shipping container.

"You need to get in right now,
and we need you live."

I was completely shocked.

I didn't expect that either of them
would be found alive, honestly,

because they'd been missing
for so long

and it was so
out of their character.

I think the entire community
had that reaction.

Everyone was shocked.

The fact that she was being held in
a container alive for two months,

and it's their neighbourhood
real-estate agent that did it?

It was completely jaw dropping.

People were just floored.

"How could this happen
in my small town?"

I got a call saying that from
the minute they opened the Conex

and were able to get it opened
and found Kala,

that they recorded everything
that she said

and that they were taking her
by ambulance,

still recording her on the iPad,
to the local hospital.

And I immediately asked the other
detective that was with me,

"Can you get me there
as fast as you can?"

I felt like
I just wanted to be there

when the doors of the ambulance
opened.

So he got me there
as soon as possible,

and when they opened the doors,
one of the investigators

from Spartanburg County Sheriff's
Office said,

"This is Charlynn Ezell
from Anderson Police Department.

"She's the one who found you.
You need to thank her."

And she just cried and just,
"Thank you, thank you..."

And she didn't stop.

I never dreamed,

at any point in this investigation,

that it would turn out like this.

Good afternoon.
We are breaking into programming now

because we have new developments
in the investigation

into a missing Anderson County woman
found in Woodruff yesterday.

We have learned today that

a body has been found
on that property.

Sheriff Chuck Wright said yesterday

it is possible they could be dealing
with a serial killer in this case.

We did find a body
in a shallow grave

on this piece of property
around ten this morning.

So, I mean, I...I wanted to confirm
that we did find a body.

I heard that they had found a body
but no-one had touched it.

It looked like
a body had been buried there.

I made my way out to where the body
at that time had been found.

And that's when it started to break
a little bit for me,

as far as the human side of it.

And thinking if this were my son.

I had a son several years younger
than Charlie,

and I really I started reading
all these statements,

and it was so...I couldn't be
hardened to it any more.

It's tough.

Yeah.

I was actually at home

when I received the phone call.

And when they called me,
I was in shock.

I mean, at the time,
I thought that he was alive,

cos they didn't tell me anything.

They just said, "We need to take you
to Woodruff, South Carolina,"

which is close to where
the 100 acres was.

And so I called my wife,
and I told Julie,

I said, "They found him."

I said,
"You need to come home from work,

"and the police are picking us up."

At that point, we sat there
for hours not knowing anything.

And...once they had us all there,

they told us that...

..he was on the property,
but they didn't...

..that they didn't think
it was that he was alive.

And that was a hard day.

32 years old,
whole life in front of him.

One night, I came home
to see my husband.

It had been a while,

and I tried to go to bed

probably around 11, midnight,
somewhere around in there.

And I woke back up
a few hours later,

and I went back to the property.

I just felt better on the property,
and I can't explain that.

But I know, as a mother, if my son
had been missing for two months

and we were that close...

..it just felt wrong.

I just kind of sat vigil, I guess,
until the sun came up that morning.

You've dug into someone's life
for two months,

and it's the weirdest feeling
like you know that person

and I've never met him.

He was a good man.

He was a really good man.

I don't want people to forget him.

He loved his parents,
he loved his siblings,

and, uh...he was a really good man.

And it's, uh...it's tough when

they're just so good and they...

..they die so senselessly, you know?

So...

When something like this happens
and a Todd Kohlhepp shows up

and they realise he's actually

a mass-murderer and serial killer
both, that's huge,

I mean, this is the talk of the town
forever.

20 years from now, they'll look back
and it's like it happened yesterday.

That puts him on the map,
if you will.

Not in a good way,
but it puts them on the map.

It's hard to even fathom

that I'm covering a case
about a couple that went missing,

and then it turns into tons of webs,
it just goes all over the place.

I mean, it goes back years and years
and years.

And just to know that someone
who was just hiding in plain sight

was the person responsible.

Have you ever been sitting
in your car

and you got ready to go and pull out
into a lane?

You didn't, and then right away,
a big ol' truck passes you by?

I think we all have
come within seconds

of making a decision
that would change our life forever.

And we can think all day long,

"Oh, I could have died
if I pulled out there."

I think a lot of people were
kind of traumatised

that this guy was doing this
right here in their town.

And Todd, because he worked
with so many other realtors

and had all the different people
that would come and fix the houses,

Todd knew a ton of people,

like everyone in the sort of
Spartanburg area

had a Todd Kohlhepp story.

They'll tell you how like there was
like these little weird things,

but nothing that ever said,
you know, "You're a murderer."

I remember a lot of...
people coming out to the property.

At that point,
it was almost a spectacle,

like nothing had ever happened
in South Carolina

like that at that point.

So many women came by and said,

"Oh, my gosh,
this could have been me,

"because he wanted my free kittens
from Facebook."

He was reaching out
to all these different people.

I guess maybe transients,
like the Coxies were at one point,

and asking them for...
if they had free things,

he would ask them
to bring it to that property.

By that time, I thought...

"How many more has he killed
over these years

"where he was silent
and nobody picked up on him?

"How many more have there been?"

The investigators,
as they were looking into the case,

looking at social media,

looking at everything
that he had done online,

they found these Amazon reviews
that he had posted.

They were items like a shovel,

locks, a multi-pack of locks.

And he had posted all of these
very cryptic comments about them.

People thought that
they were these funny reviews,

but it's kind of crazy
when you think about it,

that this was actually
what he was buying these items for.

It was almost as if
Todd's Amazon reviews

were foreshadowing the actual
murders he was committing.

For example, he left
an Amazon review for a lock...

..that was then used to
lock Kala in the container.

He left a review for a shovel...

..that he used to dig a grave
for her boyfriend, Charlie.

So if one were to go through
each Amazon review,

it was almost unbelievable

how much they connected
to each one of his crimes.

And for me, the most chilling
was the Hotel California,

because when you really listen
to the lyrics at the end,

"you can check out,
but you can never leave,"

and to see that he had actually
put that in an Amazon reviews,

and it's a review for five locks

that were actually on
the shipping container on his land.

And then you remember that
Charlie Carver had those same lyrics

on his Facebook
after he had gone missing

and someone was on his account
posting all of these things.

That, to me was
the most mind boggling thing.

For some reason,
the Hotel California

"You could check out,
you could never leave,"

really always stuck with me,

because that's really what happened
to Charlie Carver and the Coxies.

They got out there, but they had
no chance of ever leaving.

A lot of people
will say things that...

..they say very nonchalantly,
as a joke, whatever,

but that are dead on true
to their life.

So it's a way to confess
without confessing,

because there's a lot of people

that just have to brag
about everything they do.

Well, obviously kidnaping
and killing people

is not something you just go around
bragging to everybody about.

So, you know, I think it was a way

for him to be able to
put it out there

without...putting it out there.

Investigators are looking
for more

bodies on the property of an alleged
serial killer in South Carolina.

Authorities say Kohlhepp
may have even killed more people,

and they're now looking at him
as a serial killer.

Teams continue to search
the 95-acre property

for more human remains.

Kohlhepp has been charged
with kidnapping,

with more charges expected.

With the information
that Kala was able to give,

we had reason to believe

that there were two other bodies
on that property.

We started looking
at any place that had been dug,

and we could not find where
Kala thought the bodies were buried.

So at one point, Spartanburg County

brought Kohlhepp
back out to the property

so he could point it out,
and he did.

And that's when
the Coxies were found.

As soon as Todd is arrested,

he's brought in
and he's interrogated,

and he admits to these murders
pretty quickly.

While Todd is being interrogated,
that's a show for him.

That is such a narcissist's dream.

A narcissist's dream
is to be needed,

to have the attention of everyone.

Now he's famous in a way.

He's done these things,

and not only did he do these crimes,
but in his mind,

he almost feels as though
the police should applaud him,

because of how quickly
he was able to kill the people.

He certainly thought of himself
as an expert when it comes to guns,

and I think he also thought
of himself as an expert

when it comes to using guns
on people.

So the way that he would talk
about committing these murders,

especially when people were shot,
he was proud of his own work.

He thought that
it was exhibiting his expertise,

just like how he was proud of

how good he was at being
a real-estate agent.

To him, those two things were
one and the same.

Throughout the interrogation,

he enjoyed the game-playing
with the interviewers.

He knew where it was going to go.

He always knew
where it was going to go.

But he liked the game.

"What's in it for me?

"What might I get out of this
if we keep to keep talking?

"Maybe I make a deal with you
for something.

"You might be able to help me out
in some way,

"get a lesser sentence."

It's a way of playing games.

The 13th anniversary

of one of the most notorious
unsolved crimes in the Upstate,

the Superbike murders.

Four people died that day at a
motorsports business in Chesnee.

Four people were brutally murdered
in a Spartanburg County business.

The Superbike Murders, as they were
called, are still unsolved.

There have been nearly 800 leads for
the Superbike motorsports killings,

but no-one's been caught.

It was that Saturday that
Todd Kohlhepp reinitiated contact.

One of the investigators, Tom Clark,
used to live

in the same apartment complex that
Todd did when Superbike happened.

And he would do sex offender checks,

and Todd was on the sex offender
registry from his crime in Arizona.

So they were familiar
with each other from that.

And at the jail that Saturday,

Todd reinitiated contact with Tommy
through a detention officer.

And that's what got them
talking again.

Tommy calls me and says,
"He says he will give us Superbike."

I said OK, he said but he wants to
be able to talk to his mom.

I said, well, I don't think
that will be a big issue,

getting him on the phone
with his mom.

I said,
before we do anything for him,

if he's saying that,
go to him and ask him to tell you

something that only we would know
or the person that did it.

So he called me back
just a few minutes later

and he said he used two
different types of ammunition,

and he was able to give
the brands of ammunition

and what he says were
the weight grains

of the projectiles
of the ammunition.

So it was fairly evident then

that he knew
what he was talking about.

He had too much knowledge

that only the investigators or
the person that did it would know.

And there's no doubt that
he is the person that did Superbike

and killed those four people.

We received a press release
that the Sheriff's Office

was going to have a press conference
later that day

about some new developments in
the case involving Todd Kohlhepp.

At this point,
media from all over the world

had arrived in Spartanburg County,
South Carolina.

The property in Woodruff
was lined with reporters,

cameras as far as you could see.

It was a scene that no-one
has ever seen,

obviously, in that town.

They were all waiting to find out

what else is going to
come out of this.

It was a huge deal,

but we didn't know
what was going to be announced

until we sent our crew out there
that day.

The sheriff, you know, didn't say.

No-one had any idea
it would be that.

My family was walking
out of a movie theatre,

my husband and my kids,

and Detective Lachica called me
from South Carolina,

and he said, "I have something
I need to discuss with you.

"It is really important,
I need you to be home in an hour."

I just thought, "What a weird call."

When they called back, he said,

"Melissa, we got him."

And I said, "Got who?"

Like it wasn't...

I had no idea
what they were talking about.

And he said, "We have a man
who's confessed

"to killing the Superbike people."

And I said, "What?!"

"Who is..."
You know, "Just who is this?"

And then he just started
going into...

He said, "I don't know
if you've been watching the news,

"but there's a girl
that had gone missing out here,"

and I had been watching the news

and I had been paying attention
to that,

because it was in the same county.

I was shocked when I found out
it was the exact same guy,

and that he had told her
while he held her captive,

that he had murdered four people

at a motorcycle dealership
over a decade ago

and they had never caught him.

Back in 2003, on Parris Bridge Road,

there were four members
of Spartanburg County society

brutally murdered.

Scott Ponder was killed,

Beverly Guy was killed,

Mr Brian Lucas was killed,

and Chris "Shoobie" Sherbert
was killed.

We signed four warrants
on Todd Kohlhepp today

with a confession
that he did this crime.

Praise the Lord! That's right.

So he does confess
to all seven murders,

and the police then offer him
a plea deal -

if he pleads guilty,

that he will be able to avoid
the death penalty.

The plea hearing was about
a year and a half later.

We didn't really have
a lot of new information.

They were really kind of staying
closed-lipped about everything.

So we didn't know anything about
what was going to come out of it,

none of the details or anything,
until that day.

Todd Kohlhepp is set to appear
in Spartanburg County Court

this morning for a plea hearing,

but the details on the plea
have not been released.

This morning, dozens of people
came face-to-face,

many for the first time,

with the man who ripped
their families apart.

We are covering this story
from all angles today.

When he went in that day
for his sentencing,

it was, for many of the families,

the first time
that they were seeing him

and the first time
that they got to address him.

And so it was an extremely
emotional day.

I was there that day,
I was in the courtroom.

Hearing the family members
of the victims,

that was very profound,
to hear what they had to say.

Some of them had years
to process this,

and the others had had
just over a year

to come to terms with what happened.

But they all faced him,

and he just sat there stoically
with no emotion at all.

People were sort of burying
years of pain to him,

telling them about
their horrific losses.

And Todd seemed to show
zero remorse,

Closure is hell.

It's very difficult to get closure

when you've lost a loved one,
lost a child,

lost a brother or a sister
or a parent.

I mean, it scars you forever.

I mean, you're still going to
have that in your soul,

and they want to be able to
move on with their life.

But there's no really moving on.

You're always going to have
that scar on your soul,

and the disbelief that...

I mean, your disbelief in humanity,

that you're never going to be
the same when you lose a loved one.

You'll never be the same.

I just don't think that
there's ever any closure

when you've had somebody taken
from you that you didn't want gone.

There's not a good reason
to take a human life.

But I feel peace in knowing that...

..we did all the things
that we needed to do

in order to see this through,

and that I can still talk
about Scott and Beverly,

and I can celebrate them,

and that my son has people
that left this earth

that he can be really proud of.

We should be focusing
on the victims.

This is what this is about.

And historically, it's always...
we've kind of ignored them.

These are people who have families,
they have relatives, loved ones.

And they have no voice,
and victims deserve a voice.

How do they have a say
in what's happening,

the outcomes for people?

I think people who survive
these types of horrific things

have a right to have
a greater voice in the courts.

I think that's really important.

Scott's personality was one that,
once he got to know you,

he would do some funny things.

He was very, very good

at doing the Michael Jackson kick
and crotch grab and the moonwalk,

and it was the funniest thing
you've ever seen.

But he had to know you first
and be comfortable around you

before he would do something
like that.

That's one of the funniest things
he's ever done,

but he was also the type that was
joking around all the time.

Like his whole environment,
the business.

It was just a light-hearted,
joking-around type of an atmosphere,

and that's just who he was,
you know? He liked to have fun.

I think that his personality was one

that people felt very comfortable
around him.

I think, honestly, that's why he was
so...successful in his business.

They would come in,

and he immediately made people
feel comfortable and right at home,

and I think that's why his death
is such a tragedy.

Little things that you see
or happen, uh...

..remind you they're there,
you know?

The first time we went out
to...the property,

they let us on the property,

they were actually getting ready

to do an auction
on the stuff from the property,

and we were walking around,

and there was a butterfly
that landed on me.

And the auctioneer said, he said,
"That butterfly just hangs out."

He said, "It's landed on my stuff."

I hope they remember him
for the person he was.

You know, it's one of those...

..that you hope...

..goodness comes out of it.

Um...

It's one of those things

where you hope people remember
the good sides, the good things,

which I think they will, you know,
he was a good guy.

I think what we see
with Todd's story is that...

..it is very possible to, one, be
a serial killer, to be a criminal,

and at the same time have
a whole different dimension

of your personality
that is socially acceptable.

It is disturbing,

because it really gives you an idea
of what lives among us

in our neighbourhoods
and our communities

all over the country,
all over the world.

Which means that we don't often know

what people are dealing with
internally,

which also means we don't know

what's going to trigger them
to act in criminal ways.

We think that all murderers
are like, "Aaagh,"

and they look like a murderer,

when in fact most look
nothing of the sort.

Most live normal lives,
most do normal things.

But they also kill people.

With my children,

I never hid scary shows

or movies or things like that
from them.

I would teach them,
"This is all make-believe."

You know, "This is not real."

You know, "There's no monsters
under your bed,

"there's no monsters in the closet."

Monsters are people
that look like you and me.

They walk around out here
with everybody else.

Those are the real monsters
in the world.

Not this make-believe stuff.

There's more than him out there.

And there's been examples
for centuries.

And, you know, I just hope
that everybody will...

..pay attention to warning signs

and, you know, not become a victim
if they can help it.

Sometimes you just can't help it.
