The baby was shot in camera.

And my understanding is from David,
there were performance issues...

...where with any of those kind of physical
effects, you don't have the control.

You get the realism.
You get real wet-skin look.

And, you know,
it's really there in the real lighting.

And the other actors
get to cue their performances off of it.

And those are all great benefits of
those kind of special effects done on set.

However, trying to get the subtlety...

...of an infant's performance...

...getting, uh, just the little corners
of the mouth to turn up in a smile.

And to, you know, get all those kind
of subtleties is very difficult.

So we actually took
the live-action element that was shot...

...used it as a lighting reference.

And then we entirely created
the infant in СG.

We laser-scanned the one
that was created practically.

Тhen worked on adding wrinkling...

...and the kind of shar-pei look
that everyone talked about.

Luckily, a couple of the guys
working on the shot, including my brother...

...have very young kids.

So they used a lot of their own personal
experience over the last year and a half.

We also, you know,
we just grabbed lots of baby reference.

Because the smile
was a very important beat.

And, you know, luckily, you're able
to get these days, you know--

Pretty easy to obtain really
good reference of babies smiling.

One of the interesting challenges
that we had with the baby...

...was, you can easily make it look
like an old man...

...and not make it look like an old infant.

Keeping the right
infant physical characteristics...

...but also conveying that it's not
some sort of tissue defect to that...

...but that it looks, in fact,
like, you know, an aged old man.
