how I do it,

Mike: Rhonda and I
started decorating

when we first
got married in 1973.

Rhonda:
Mike -- he's the builder.

That's right. I can build it
if she can explain it.

Our light show is all kinds
of different mediums and props.

Mike: Let's launch
our most recent sequence

now that we've added a bunch
of props to the scene.

We like to call our custom
prop process colorization

because of
the mediums we use.

Mike: We have the smart nodes
around the inside,

and this is what really
gives us our color pop.

Colorizing these props
with smart nodes

takes your light show
to just a different level.

I haven't seen one
like ours before.

Ours is kind of different
and kind of special.

Very unique.

Get those spots,
freshen it up.

Yes, ma'am.

For me, getting to be on

"The Great Christmas
Light Fight"

has been
a bucket list of mine.

It's looking so good.

I have lymphoma,
and I also have breast cancer.

And with all of
my health issues,

we almost didn't
make the display.

Let's go, girls.
Let's get this yard ready to go.

We had our family
rally 'round.

They just
came to the rescue.

Good job.

We are the Wright family,
and we persevere.

No matter
what comes our way,

we're going to go, go, go.

and our colorful light display

I love the lights

There are so many of them.

You've added so many different
pieces and elements in here.

Got Spider-Man.

This section is our "Star Wars"
and superheroes.

I love it.
And he hand-draws them.

No projectors,
no tracings.
Do you really?

I do.
He looks at the picture,
and he really, truly does.

They all look great.

We do a different way
of coloring them

and bringing them to life.
Yeah.

If you look close,
this one right here --

you see how it's got the more
rainbow-ish holographic...
Oh, yeah, on the top.

And it changes.
So we use a holographic material

and it's all done by hand.

I mean, this is something
that you stick on?

Yeah, yeah. So we cut it,
we peel it, we stick it on.

They're glittered.
They're holographic.

They give
such a great effect.

Yeah.
The boldness, yeah.
Yeah.

We call it colorization.

Colorization.
That's our name for it --
colorization.

This is definitely
a different technique

than I've ever seen.

All right, well,
this is the fun area

'cause we get
to get back in here.

Tell me
about the castle.

Castle is 10 feet tall.

Wow.
Has 792 nodes on it.

It almost takes more time
to drill all the holes

than it does to do
anything else.

I can imagine.

And then the matrix behind me?
that is massive.

1,200 individual nodes,

and we can get it to do
some pretty spectacular things.

I like over here you have
more traditional elements.

These are a combination
of what we call hard-body props.
Uh-huh.

We try and add
the new smart lights

around
the traditional elements.

We sort of bring the two worlds
together in that way.

This is amazing area.

I love the lights
underneath this ice rink.

Yeah, aren't they cool?
They're super cool.

That's all Rhonda's idea.

I taught
competitive skating.

So you can't just
have a plain ice rink.
Yeah.

Gotta have
something underneath.

I feel like, you know,
being from Michigan,

ice skater myself,
so I noticed that you had

two places to ice skate,
which is awesome.

The lights underneath
this white tarp just --

it dances.

People ask us all the time
how we do it.

We just can't tell them.
It's a secret.

This is
our toy shop area.
Uh-huh.

And this we did
with older wireframe.

Regularly, you can
see through it, right?
Yeah.

So we took the coro,
which is the plastic...

Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
...put it behind it,

and then we hand-painted it
to give it more dimension.

I don't know if I've ever
seen anything like this

with the wireframes behind it.

And then this Santa --
we did the same thing,

but we couldn't get
yellow lights here or red,

so we had to paint those.

It's a great effect.

Guys, this mega tree
is massive.

How tall is it?

15 feet.

15 feet!
It is huge.

I went to
the hardware store

and picked up
the 3/4-inch PVC pipe...

Uh-huh.
...and put it
all together.

I mean, the frame on the back --
did you --

you didn't weld that,
did you?

No, it's all aluminum
u-channel.

Okay. You guys have
really figured out

how to maximize
your entire space.

We try to cover this house,
you know,

try to hide it
with all the display.

Yeah.

That is so fun.

That is a severe
Michigan snowstorm.

This is just like home.
Oh, it looks so good.

That's our snow mouse.

Did you make all of this?

I made all that.
It's a complex machine.

It is a --
what's going on back here?

It's got, like,
four pivot points in there.

So as the motor
moves one part,

everything else sort of shifts
a different direction.

And you just have one motor
right here.

That's so smart,
'cause how many

different layers
do you have on it?

I think
there's five layers.

Just another unique piece
that only you guys have.

We try to be unique.

The fact
that it's moving

and all of this color on here
is even better,

which is something
that you've done

throughout
your entire display.

This display is so saturated

with all of these vibrant,
beautiful colors.

The Wrights have figured
out colorization,

which is different colors,
layers, holographics.

It's like a coloring book
come to life.

Wright family,
I mean, how cool is that?

I thought it was great!

I was so impressed -- the way
you were able to blend in

all of the traditional
older elements

with just a great, new, modern,
contemporary light show.

It's really special
what you guys have created

and the fact that the two of you
do this together.

I can't thank
my husband enough

for everything he does
out in this yard,

and he does a lot.

I'm battling cancer...

...and so this keeps us
as a distraction

as you're going
through treatment.

We had live reindeer
for our wedding,

Christmas decorations,
centerpieces.

It was all Christmas.

of spray paint on it.

Patrick: We have
a Texas-sized display.

Each of these cities
is according to their theme.

all of our Nativity scenes
that we have.

for the Mach family

to name all these cities
around Texas?

So that way they could
have different themes.

Really fun, very inventive.
These guys nailed it.

It's beginning to look
a lot like Christmas.

I've loved Christmas lights
ever since I was a little kid.

It's the last one on the roof.

Glad to get that done
before the snow.

Adam: As long as I can remember,
my aunt and uncle

went all out
at Christmastime.

They had such a huge display,
and I always just loved it.

Stand up straight here.

Eventually, Aunt Jo
and Uncle Jim decided

that it was time to step down.

We looked at each other,
and I think it took us

about a minute to decide
that we have to do this.

It's the same family.
It's the same Christmas lights.

And the only thing
that's changed is the address.

Time to upgrade
the old light bars with L.E.D.s.

Adam: What's special to me
is that we almost never

throw Christmas
decorations away.

How long ago did your aunt
and uncle make these?

I bet it's been
at least 15 or 20 years.

We like to rehab them
and give them new life.

I bet we've been looking
at this reindeer

for the last
35 Christmases.

Anyone can buy lights,
but for us,

it's all about
family tradition.

And that trophy
would look wonderful

in our Christmas display.

There's so many
beautiful things to see.

Well, this is the original
Nativity -- most of it is.

So this was
your Nativity scene.

What year did you guys
get this?

Maybe the '80s.
Maybe.

Has anything changed?

Have you had to modify these
in any way?

Jessica: I took apart
the red poinsettias

and pulled
all the old bulbs out.
Oh.

A lot of them had burned out
over the years.
Uh-huh.

so I individually tacked
new lights back into them

to make them shine
really bright.

Wow. Okay.
That's impressive.

And then you worked
on the wise men.

Adam: This year, I replaced them
all with L.E.D.s,

just to make it
a little brighter.

And they're certainly
not perfect,

but they are well loved,
and it seems like every year

they get taped
and wired back together.

Right.
Well, it's a beautiful piece.

I even love seeing it
right in front of this tree

as a backdrop.
It looks great.

Carter: We got to talk about
these deer, guys.

[ Laughs ] I don't know
that I've ever seen

deer like this before.

They're beautiful.

Adam: These are
our prismatic deer.

They kind of change colors
as you walk around them.

And we just loved them,
so had to have them.

Jo, when you see this,

is this kind of something
you guys wish you had?

Oh, I would have loved to
have had this back in the day.

Jim, what do you think
about these deer?

Jim: Oh, I like them.
Yeah?

But I'm old-fashioned,
you know?

This whole thing started back
in the '60s with my father...

Yeah.
...and then graduated to us,
to Jo and I.

Wow.
And now look
what we have.

All these fancy ones.
And now
we're on to the new,

like, space-age deer,
right?

Jessica: That's right.
Completely different.

What's up
with the moon up there?

That is a very special moon
and one of my favorites

because Adam made it
himself.
Wow.

Adam: It's got five coats
of glow-in-the-dark paint on it.

Does it really?
It does.

And then it's kind of special
'cause when the lights go out

at the end of the night...
Yeah.

...it's still glowing.

That's super cool.
It's a beautiful piece.

So you have so many wireframes
throughout.

What I love what you guys
have done --

the pads on the bottom,

Yeah.
I feel like that was --
that's really smart.

That's something
I got from Jo.

We get some
pretty strong winds

and weather through here
being in Colorado.
Yeah.

And we needed a way
to put them on the driveway

without worrying about them
blowing over.
Right.

But it's nice. If it snows,
then it all kind of blends in.
Blends in?

Yeah.
So, like,
these angels --

Jo, are these
from you guys?
Jo: Mm-hmm.

These are some
of our originals.

Jim: And the church.
Jessica: Yes, the church.

Wow.
A lot of love
has gone into that.

Third set of lights
on this church.

Really?
Jo: They've been welded
and rewelded

and then
they've been zip-tied.
Yeah.

When people ask me
how I do it,

I say,
"Zip ties and coffee."

I love it.

One of the things I noticed
right away

were these gorgeous
red lights

that strand all the way
around the house,

just, like, framing it
perfectly.

They started with
the aunt and uncle.
Jim: I made them.

You did?
Jo: He built him.

I made the boards
and cut all the holes

and did the electrical.

Well, it looks great.

I love the fact that
you were able to pass that down.

Jessica: And that's my favorite
part, is just having something

that they worked so hard
to make themselves...
Right.

...and then being able
to carry that on over here

and just build on that,
so it's really special for us.
For sure.

Carter: It's so unique
to see a display

that's been used, different

to measure out each strand.

One thing that really sets us
apart as a display

is we are very particular.

We want to be precise.

Every six inches.

It's not just thrown out there.

Everything has rhyme.
Everything has purpose.

These ones go in a wave
this one direction.

Oh, got to cover
those plugs.

Jenny: We can't just
lay out snow fluff.

We have to manipulate it
in a way where it has texture

and it really
looks like snow.

Good job.

Everything is done
with military precision

'cause it adds an elegance
to the display,

and it really
makes it magical.

and some recycled pieces.

...that we recycled,
and we just sliced them

and put them on ropes

so they look like
a candy necklace.

When you say you slice them,
how do you slice a pool noodle?

Those retractable
razor blades.
Yeah.

So you make it
as long as you can.

And then it's just like
chopping vegetables.
Oh, really?

It's so unique because
it adds color and texture.

This here
is actually caulking.

And we put it
in a piping bag.

Oh.
That is so smart.

Let's talk about
the perimeter here.

James: We have our rope light
to try to keep people

from entering
into the display...
Right.

...so that way it can stay nice
and fresh and everything.

Our candy canes
are really just...
Oh, my gosh.

...tree stakes,
where we took a pool noodle,

and then you put a little topper
on it, and that's it.

Oh, my gosh.
That's super smart.

I love
these older pieces.

You have
the carousel over here.

These are actually
from, like, the '90s.

Some might even
call them vintage.

The '90s is vintage?!
What happened?

I don't know.
I mean --

We don't want to

So this is our
drive-in movie theater.

We do a great movie mashup
of all the holiday classics.

use this garage

when it's not Christmas,

Completely transform it.

All this is actually
landscape fabric

that we cover
the walls with.

And, you know, that's when
Santa moves his car in

with all of his presents.
That's perfect.

because we are

how meticulous you guys

I am very meticulous
about my lights.

Every single light
is exactly 6 inches apart.

Wow.
It's a lot of zip ties
and a lot of detail.

And to show you,
this is my 12-inch mark.

Oh, my gosh.
I just want to make sure --

It is actually two 10-foot
galvanized metal poles,

2 feet into the ground
in concrete with a sleeve...

...and then three
steel guidelines.

Sometimes they get
really high gusts of wind.

That thing does not budge.

Tell me about
the snowflakes.

So the snowflakes are actually
40-inch snowflakes...

Wow.
...9 feet in the air.

It is a 2x4
and then a 5x5 base

that actually locks
into the roof.

Then I have 12,000-pound
ratchet straps so --

12,000?!
Yes.

I don't even have
12,000 pound

ratchet straps
at my house.

And I'm pushing around tractors
and everything.

This is crazy.
I love the snowflakes.

By going up, you just make
your display that much bigger.
