students.

What happened?
Why the eight-hour delay?

-I personally won't go out
at night alone.

-Just the basic facts
of this case were jaw-dropping.

-And it got bigger
and bigger and bigger.

-Am I looking at the murderer?

-This nondescript person
acting suspiciously.

Staring at them.
Glaring at them.

-The accusations,

they were getting crazier
and crazier by the day.

-A killer remains
on the loose,

and residents want more answers
from law enforcement.

-In our Facebook group,

he would talk about

where the bodies
were positioned in the house.

I'm sure the killer is
on this page.

-This is somebody who wanted
his five seconds of fame

and wanted to go down
notoriously.

-Can you tell us what
you were looking for

while you were back
at the house?

-We live in Moscow
in a murder mystery right now.

-There is no such thing
as a perfect crime.

Events like this
don't occur in a vacuum.

I'm Art Bettge.

I'm the mayor of the city
of Moscow, Idaho.

Moscow's a quiet,
rural university town.

Very peaceful, offers
a high quality of life to folks.

We've got about
27,000 people here.

Fully 9,000 of them are students
at the University of Idaho.

-The university here
really changes the flavor

of being in a little town.

It raises the intellectual

and the cultural level
of the citizens in this area.

-My name is Brian Entin.

I covered this story in
Moscow, Idaho,

pretty much from
the very beginning,

and it all begins with
four extraordinary young people

who were all students at the
University of Idaho.

Maddie Mogen,
Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin,

and Xana Kernodle.
Their lives were out there

for the world to see
on Instagram and TikTok.

-Hi, my name
is Xana Kernodle.

I'm a marketing major here
at the University of Idaho

and I'm involved...

-Everyone just loved Xana.

She was known
for being very social,

very inviting, very inclusive.

♪♪

Ethan was Xana's boyfriend.

Ethan Chapin was a triplet.

His mom had three high chairs
lined up in the kitchen.

Eventually, all
three siblings enrolled

at the University of Idaho.

-Ethan was a second year
freshman,

and I think he enjoyed
life a little too much,

which is why he was
a second year freshman.

Kaylee Goncalves was
21 years old.

She was part of
the Alpha Phi sorority.

On TikTok,

Kaylee was a life of the party,
really caring.

A lot of fun.

-Kaylee Goncalves
met Maddie Mogen

when they were in sixth grade,

so they had been friends
for a really, really long time.

They were
in different sororities,

but they shared a house.

-The people in Maddie's
sorority

talked about her being like
this bright and shining person.

She had a great personality.
On social media,

she was outgoing,
she was really sweet and kind.

-The King Road house
was known to be a party house.

All the housemates
were involved in Greek life.

[ Indistinct conversation ]

There are
many noise complaints

and police would show up.
-What's your last name?

-The house was kind of oddly
built into the side of a hill.

You've got a front door that
enters onto the basement floor.

Then, around the back, there is

a deck, and then that has

a sliding glass door that

enters the second floor

living area.

-Oh, we're not actually --

[ Indistinct conversation ]

-You guys haven't been drinking
or anything, right?

-No.
-Okay. Drive careful, okay?

-Thanks.
-Will do. Thank you.

-The house has three floors,

so they're renting the rooms

and then have
a common living area.

They didn't even lock the door.
I mean, it's just how it was.

♪♪

-November 12th.
It was game day.

There was a big football game
against UC Davis.

That day, the housemates
were all wearing, you know,

University of Idaho sweatshirts.

They took a picture
outside their house.

Maddie sat on Kaylee's shoulders
for the picture.

-It's Maddie, Kaylee,
Xana, and Ethan.

Then on either edge of the photo
are the two other roommates,

Bethany and Dylan.

-Everyone looked really,
really happy.

They were clearly expecting
to have a great time.

-As big as the game is,

the events that surround
the game all through town

and all through the university
are as big,

if not bigger,
and it's a major party weekend.

-That night, the housemates
went to different parties.

-Ethan had gone to
a fraternity formal

with his twin sister
as his date.

And met back up with Xana
at a fraternity party.

Maddie and Kaylee were at a bar

called The Corner Club.

-Maddie and Kaylee met up with

Kaylee's ex-boyfriend, Jack.

He and Kaylee had been dating
for their entire tenure

at the University of Idaho,
and they had recently broken up.

-After the girls were
at The Corner Club,

Kaylee and Maddie
went to The Grub Truck,

which is like a food truck.

Then they got a ride home.

-Xana and Ethan

came home around the same time
as Maddie and Kaylee.

-When everyone was back home
at the house on King Road,

they all chatted for a bit

and then they went to
their various bedrooms.

[ Laughter,
indistinct conversations ]

Kaylee and Madison
went up to the third floor

and they settled down
together in Maddie's bedroom,

while Kaylee's dog Murphy stayed
in Kaylee's bedroom,

which was across the hall.

Xana and Ethan retired to
Xana's room on the second floor,

while Dylan went to her room,

which was down the hall
from that.

Meanwhile, Bethany went to sleep
in her bedroom,

and that was
on the basement level.

-One thing that we know
is that Kaylee and Maddie

called Kaylee's ex-boyfriend,
Jack, several times,

but he never picked up.

It just went straight
to voicemail.

The other thing that we do know
is that Xana ordered food,

and it was delivered
to the house around 4:00 AM.

-That was the last contact

the housemates had
with the outside world.

And when the news broke
the very next day,

it shocked everyone
who heard it.

-The small town of Moscow,
Idaho, remains on edge

tonight following
the brutal killings

of four University of Idaho
students -- Ethan Chapin,

Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle,
and Madison Mogen --

violently attacked inside
a rental house near campus

early Sunday morning.

-From the moment
that this story broke,

I knew that this was going to be
one of the biggest crime stories

that I'd ever covered.

-Authorities confirm
evidence was found

on multiple floors,

carnage so severe photos appear
to show blood seeping

from the crime scene to the
exterior foundation of the home.

-Just the basic facts
of this case were jaw-dropping.

The fact that it was so random
and so savage,

the fact that there were
four students murdered,

the fact
that two people survived.

And yet no one had any idea
who could have done this.

-We are continuing to track
breaking news

out of Moscow, Idaho.
-It started with a call

to the Moscow Police Department
just before noon.

-House right here is
where police found four bodies.

-People were found dead.

-This is a very much
a developing situation.

-I remember heading
to the airport,

boarding a flight for Idaho,
and in that moment,

it felt like everyone knew

that this was going to be
a huge story.

-Everything about this case
was thought-provoking

and eye-catching
from word go.

These young people's lives
played out on social media.

But I'll tell, you those images,
the beauty of our victims,

their vibrant smiles,

may very well have been
what did them in.

♪♪

-When I arrived on the ground
in Moscow,

I remember right away
there was a lot of confusion.

Can you tell us what
you were looking for?

The cops said the
murders at King Road

occurred sometime after 4:00 AM

on the morning of
November 13th, 2022.

But the two surviving roommates,
Dylan and Bethany,

who may have been sleeping
in their bedrooms

at the time of the attack,

they didn't call 911
until sometime around 12:00 noon

the next day,
which is eight hours later.

♪♪

-The next morning,
Dylan and Bethany

find their housemates

and, allegedly, their first
phone call was to their friends.

So other students, you know,

the victim's
peers are coming to the house

and seeing what's going on
before police even get there.

-There's been some speculation
as to how the call came in,

but it's listed

as an unresponsive individual
in the house.

-Finally, police arrive to find
the most horrifying crime scene

they've ever witnessed.

-The affidavit describes
their injuries in great detail.

If you've ever seen
injuries like that,

there's no mistaking them.

A knife can do horrific things
to a human body.

-My phone buzzes me,

and it's a text
from our city supervisor

that says that there's been
a murder in town

that's involved
four university students.

We have a major situation
on our hands,

and it became a very
major story quickly.

And for a person
who'd been hoping

that his mayoral tenure would
feature four years of quietude,

that was blown right out
of the water on the spot.

It's a very tragic

and sad situation
all around.

-The four
were stabbed with a knife,

but no weapon has been located
at this time.

-This was the kind of thing
that you only really think

you're going to hear about
in a murder novel.

It didn't seem possible.

-The unthinkable happened
in this house behind me.

Four university students
brutally murdered here.

As soon as I got there,

I could see that this was
a crime that really,

really frightened the students
and the residents of the town.

The killer was unknown
at that point,

and he was still on the loose.

-I personally won't go out
at night alone.

-There's a lot of apartment
buildings, houses,

a lot of kids going to and from.

And then you turn
onto this road here,

which is King Road.

This is actually the road
that the house is on.

You look to the right here.

This is the house
where the murders happened.

Being on the ground and
talking with folks every day,

it was clear to me
that the community was

really feeling under siege from
all of the outside attention.

All of this really is
a nightmare for this town,

a nightmare that they
just cannot wake up from.

-Almost every corner
around the university campus,

there would be camera crews
setting up for a shot.

And it wasn't just
from local affiliates,

it was from Seattle,
it was from California.

It was from all over.

-News of this
had gone right around the world

almost overnight.

♪♪

-All of this was
so overwhelming for the families

of the victims, and in
the days after the murders,

they gradually began to emerge
to speak with the media

about their lost loved ones.

Is there something you
can tell us about Xana,

the girl you knew?

-Um...

Xana, she was tough. She was --
She was strong.

She was funny.
She just could make you smile.

I think you can see
from her TikToks.

-If you could describe
your daughter in a few words,

how would you describe Maddie?

-Oh, just great and funny
and just fun.

She just, you know, she had such
a bright future ahead of her.

♪♪

-Tell us who
your Ethan really was.

-[ Chuckles ]

Yeah, he was a great kid.

In our family, personally,
he was kind of the comedian.

-He just loved life.

-You want everybody to be the
beneficiary of Kaylee's life.

-We try to raise our children
not to be self-centered

and to, like, sacrifice their
lives and try to,

like, help other people
and find value in that.

She was very likable person

and she didn't have a mean bone
in her body.

♪♪

-As the families grieved
the scale

of this quadruple
homicide investigation,

it grew larger and larger
by the day.

[ Police radio chatter ]

-You're looking at a crime scene
with multiple victims,

multiple autopsies.
That scene has to be processed.

The neighborhood has to
be canvassed for the cameras.

Cell towers have to be dumped.

And that's just the initial
stages of this investigation.

And it got bigger
and bigger and bigger.

-It's one of the biggest
true crime pages on Facebook,

with about 227,000 members,

and Kristine Cameron
and Alina Smith

are the administrators.

Kristine Cameron and
Alina Smith are two people who,

if you have been following
this case, you cannot ignore.

They started the Facebook group

Idaho Murders Case
Discussion Group.

-[ Speaking indistinctly ]

-Kristine and I attended
the same high school,

and our biggest common factor

was we just had this passion
for true crime.

-Another page.
-Yeah, that's when I can tell

if they're on,
'cause look.

And so I was like,

let's start some true
crime pages on Facebook

and just get our feet wet.

-True crime used to be,
you know,

a crime happens
and then there's an arrest made.

Well, because of social media,

we have the opportunity
to kind of see in real time

what is happening.

So, you know, you have these
armchair sleuths or detectives,

so to speak, and they
want to be a part of it.

-Kristine and I
have not made any money.

We had the option to turn it
into a monetizing page,

and we didn't, because we don't
want to benefit off of a crime.

-With our other pages,
it was just a pastime.

Like, we'd set up a page

and I have my role and Alina
has her role.

-We had all these other pages,

and I think 6,000 members was
a good number.

I mean, if we got 6,000, we were
like, wow, this is great.

-When the University of Idaho
happened,

it was almost overnight.

It just went from a fun pastime
to, like, a full-time job.

At the end of the first day,

we had almost 17,000 people
on the page.

-And then, two weeks after
that, we were already at 80,000.

That's how quickly
the numbers went.

And then, two weeks after that,
we were already about 140.

Two weeks after that, we're 190.

It was just wild.

Oh, my God.

-When Kristine and Alina's
Facebook page blew up,

they were as surprised as
anyone.

But I think they had
absolutely no idea just

how deeply involved they
themselves

would become in the hunt
for the killer.

♪♪

-Moscow, Idaho,
a town of only 26,000 people,

is typically quiet, safe.

As one business owner
I spoke to put it,

people don't even lock
their car doors at night.

-This is a small town
police force

with just a little over
30 people total working for it.

And suddenly they're swept
up in a quadruple homicide.

So they were up against a lot.

And immediately
the internet went after

this police force saying
that they were incompetent.

They couldn't handle it
on their own.

-There was a lot
of criticism of Moscow police

as being something out
of "Mayberry RFD" or something,

with Barney Fife fumbling
his way around.

-For a small town like Moscow,

they do not have
the laboratory techniques,

they do not have the forensics
to be able to conduct

a true crime scene
investigation.

-The Moscow Police,

they didn't hesitate
to bring in outside state,

even federal resources.

But one thing that struck
me very early on in the case,

Chief Fry and his department
were also careful

to maintain control
of the investigation

as the lead agency in charge.
-What I want people to know

is this is a Moscow
Police Department investigation.

We picked the investigators.

-They needed assistance
on a number of different levels.

This house had a lot
of transient visitors,

it had a lot of students
coming in and out.

So if you're looking for someone

who may have had some type
of association with the victims,

you now have opened it
up to a wide cadre of people

who potentially had contact
with them.

[ Indistinct conversation ]

-Come to the door, guys.

Send whoever lives here
down to the door.

We're not leaving.

-Oh. Look at that.

-When investigators started
looking into the history

of the King Road house,

they found many incidents
were reported.

-Thank you.
-They would give out

the code
on the door to their friends,

and their friends
would have parties.

-So I just looked for everyone
that lives here,

and they're not here right now.

-No one's here that --
-No one's here that lives here.

-So everyone here's trespassing?

-Well, no one's here
that's trespassing, but no...

-It was such a party house
that parties were going on

whether or not
the residents were even home.

-Who does live here?
What are their names?

-I am actually not sure.
I live across the street.

-When the crime scene is
a place frequented

by a large number of people,

that complicates things
because these are individuals

you have to talk with.

These are individuals
that can contribute to DNA.

-Unfortunately,

when there were screams,
cries for help,

and the barking of a dog
and other noises

coming from the house
on the night of the massacre,

a lot of residents
likely chalked it up to,

well, they're just having
another party.

♪♪

-In the days following
the murder,

as the attention of the world
was really focused on

Moscow, Idaho, they were
basically saying nothing.

Investigators were really,
really tight-lipped.

-We know you have
questions and so do we.

-They told us the victims'
names,

they told us
that it was a stabbing,

and they told us there were
no suspects at this time.

-The police had locked
the scene down.

They'd locked the evidence down.
They'd locked everything down.

-At this time, I'm
not going to expand upon that.

-It's been a little more than
two weeks now since the murders.

Parts of the timeline
are still missing,

but we know,
according to police,

that Kaylee and Madison

were here the night
before the killings

at a bar called
The Corner Club in Moscow.

Investigators say
they were here between 10:00 PM

and 1:30 AM.

One of the first major pieces
of evidence

that surfaced in the public
came from right

after Maddie and Kaylee
left The Corner Club,

and they visited a local food
truck called The Grub Truck.

-Web sleuths scoured
Twitch live streaming footage

from the food truck.

-Hello. Welcome back.
-Hi. Thanks.

-And they managed
to find a moment in the footage

where Kaylee and Maddie
placed their orders.

[ Indistinct conversations ]

They're waiting around.
They run into some people.

And behind them, you know,

standing
maybe like 10 feet away,

you can see a young man
wearing a gray hoodie.

-The Grub Truck video cast a lot
of suspicion on hoodie guy,

this nondescript person
acting suspiciously

around Maddie and Kaylee,
staring at them,

glaring at them, acting in a way
that appears to be arising

their suspicion level.

-There's really no way
to tell,

but people have said that she's
saying,

"[Bleep] you missed her."
-It's a good thing that it

ended, but...
[Bleep]

-So Maddie grabs food
off the counter.

They take off at sort of
a brisk pace to a waiting car,

and the guy in the hoodie
sort of goes like this.

-One can interpret they're
leaving that video kind of

in a rush to get away from
hoodie guy.

People were speculating
about that.

-We had this gentleman send
us this video

where he did like infrared
imagery on the students,

and he said that in, I think
it was the hoodie guy's pocket,

he could see
that he had an object

that was in the shape
of a knife.

-You had this sinking feeling
of am I looking at the murderer?

♪♪

-The wild speculation
about the guy

in the food truck video known
as "hoodie guy,"

it became even more intense
when his name and identity

was exposed on the Internet.

He was an acquaintance of the
victims named Jack Showalter.

-The name Jack Showalter
comes out.

They're researching him.

Oh, he lives
not even two miles away.

He likes to hunt.

Oh, my gosh,
he must have a knife.

They thought, this is our guy.

♪♪

-This is having like
a real impact on Jack Showalter.

People are literally showing
up on his doorstep.

-Kristine and Alina

declined to promote
the so-called infrared video

on their Facebook group,

because they came to realize
that it could not be authentic.

-We contacted somebody
in the military,

and they said
that it's impossible

to get infrared imagery
through a cell phone or video.

And so we were like, delete.

-Just as the speculation about
the hoodie guy, Jack Showalter,

was reaching a boiling point,

a new piece of video taken a few
minutes prior to his exchange

at the food truck surfaced
through Alina

and Kristine's Facebook forum.

-It's surveillance video
of Kaylee,

Maddie, and the person
known as hoodie guy

walking down the sidewalk.

-Jack Showalter was being
a gentleman,

walking the girls to the food
truck so they weren't alone.

[ Chuckles ] It just puts
a whole different perspective.

But then they latched on to,
oh, who's Adam?

-Maddie, what did you say
to Adam?

-Instead of exonerating
Jack Showalter,

the footage implicates this,
you know, mysterious Adam.

What this resulted in

was the only Corner Club
staff member named Adam,

who was not working that night,
was harassed and doxed.

-Our page is a microcosm of
how America is today.

There were many times

where we kicked people out
for just being outright rude,

mean, demeaning,
belittling others.

But then there were times

where they would look up
information about other people

and post it on the page.

That's when we were like, okay,
that's crossing the line.

That's it. You're out.

♪♪

-Police had one message
from the start.

There's no imminent threat
to the community.

-We still believe
it's a targeted attack.

-But the question was
always who and why?

When I had a chance
to sit down with Kaylee's family

three weeks after the attack,

they were really pushing back
on that notion

of a targeted attack.

-People said, "I'd be a lot more
scared if it wasn't targeted."

-Yeah.
-'Cause I'm not doing anything

to target me.
-So maybe that was

just a way to calm
people down?

-I feel like it was strategic.
-Yeah.

-It was a strategic way

to keep people
from hitting the door,

transferring out, and turning
that place into a ghost town.

-Classes are back in session
at the University of Idaho,

but it is noticeably quieter,

many students opting
not to return to campus

since the killer is still
on the run.

-I feel like a lot of people
are pretty apprehensive

and everybody's being
very vigilant.

Just kind of like avoiding
bars and, like, downtown areas.

-The university was looking at
a major decrease

in student population for
the spring semester, about 30%.

No amount of assuring the public
the fear is misplaced,

it doesn't make a dent
in the way people feel

and react emotionally.

-The town's frightened
and a ghost town.

It accentuated that creepiness,
that feeling of terror.

You could see it
in people's behavior.

You got home
and you locked yourself in.

-We're afraid
to walk anywhere alone.

We're afraid
to sleep in our own homes.

-The overriding sentiment
everywhere here,

a killer remains on the loose,

and residents want more answers
from law enforcement.

-That continual lack
of transparency has con--

Like, you know,

we live in Moscow
in a murder mystery right now.

-The lack of communication
and talking about, like,

where they were going
and what their leads were,

and I completely
understand that,

but that just opened
the floodgates

of people accusing
so many different people.

-So as it turns out,

hoodie guy from the food truck
was just the tip of the iceberg

in terms of the number of people

who were going to be accused
with limited information.

In fact, I don't think
I've ever worked on a story

where so many people
were thrown into the mix

as potential suspects.

-Ex-boyfriends,

boyfriends, people standing
at the food truck,

professors, neighbors.

Anybody that was in their,

you know, realm of existence
was fair game.

-And while the mainstream
media was not immune

from this rampant speculation,

it really took hold
in the online true crime forums.

-People became suspicious
of Kaylee's

ex-boyfriend, Jack DuCoeur,

because she and Maddie called
him multiple times in a row

very, very shortly before
the murders.

-Just the mere fact
that he was her ex

automatically had people
up in arms.

-And then there was
Jeremy Reagan.

-There were parties
that were kind of loud.

Most of the time,
it was pretty self-contained.

-He lived next door,

and he one day decided
to take his garbage out

at the worst possible time,

when all the reporters
just came running after him

and he was just walking
to the dumpster.

-I would just be walking by,
I would look up

and I would see people in
the windows almost every night.

-He's wearing a sweatshirt
that kind of like

covers up his hands.

They thought he must have cuts
where his hands are covered up.

He must be hiding something.

And all of a sudden,
he's the talk of the town.

-What happens is,
once you're on camera,

the web sleuths come after you
and they say,

"Why would you want to be
on camera unless you're,

you know, the killer
returning narcissistically

to the scene of the crime?"

-Law enforcement did
their best

to debunk the conspiracy
theories and all the rumors,

but with the two survivors
not talking publicly at all,

police really had
an impossible task.

-We find ourselves not
only tracking those

rumors down
and trying to quell them,

but the really unfortunate part
of it is the effect

that it's had on
the victims' families,

on the college students
and friends of these --

of the victims, some
of whom have had death threats.

-Ultimately, it was no use.
The accusations,

they were getting crazier
and crazier by the day.

-I have a gift.
I have the ability

to read into minds,
read into past events

and into the future.

-There's this TikTok

Tarot card-reading
true crime personality

named Ashley Guillard.

-Who killed the University
of Idaho college students

and why?

Their murder was ordered by
Rebecca Scofield.

-Rebecca Scofield is
a professor

at the University of Idaho.

-Ashley Guillard proceeded
to post dozens of videos

that included Scofield's
picture, e-mail address,

phone number, address.

So there's really intense,
horrifying,

real world consequences
for the discussions

that are evolving
in true crime forums.

-In the first few weeks
after the crime,

the speculation
and false accusations

reached a fever pitch,

and the atmosphere
of a witch hunt in Moscow

could really be seen in the case

of University of Idaho
professor Rebecca Scofield.

-Schofield became afraid
for her children's safety

because she was getting
so harassed.

Schofield was in Oregon
on the night of the murders

and, you know, not involved
in the crime in any capacity.

Finally, she filed a lawsuit
against Ashley Guillard.

And that case is still ongoing.

-Eventually,
authorities had no choice

but to take
more aggressive measures

to tamp down the rumors
because they really feared

that somebody was
going to end up getting hurt.

So on December 2nd,

they took the extraordinary step
of putting out a press release

which effectively cleared
many of the individuals

who had been attracting
attention.

-We do not believe

the following individuals
were involved.

The two surviving roommates.

The male seen
in a Grub Truck video

circulating on the Internet.

Any of the individuals

who spoke to the dispatcher
on the 911 call.

-The police publicly cleared
Jack DuCoeur, Jack Showalter,

Jeremy Reagan, and,
of course, Rebecca Scofield.

While investigators struggled
to rein in false allegations,

they were actually keeping
concealed from the public

some really crucial information
about the night of the attack.

There was an eyewitness account
from one

of the surviving roommates,

and they were able to use
that to reconstruct

the movements of the killer
that night.

-The middle of the night,

the suspect entered
through the sliding glass doors

on the main floor.

And then,
there's a set of stairs

which takes you up
to the third floor.

-I believe his intended target
was one of the girls upstairs.

-He had a Ka-Bar knife.

It's like one step away
from a samurai sword.

It's a crazy weapon.
He wanted a physical battle.

♪♪

-He entered the bedroom

where Kaylee and Maddie
were sleeping

and attacked them
with the knife.

It only took a few moments.

[ Dog barks ]

-Dylan, one of the roommates in
the house,

heard noises above her.

Her information is vital.

She provides
an eyewitness account.

She puts the killer in the home
at the time of the killings.

-Dylan opens her door
once, sees nothing.

Texts her housemates
to be quiet.

She's trying to go to sleep.

-Meanwhile,
the fifth roommate, Bethany,

was believed to be asleep
in her bedroom

down on the basement level.

-At the same time,

Xana and Ethan
had just gotten the DoorDash

and, I think,
as the killer is coming down,

maybe, like, one of them,
like, peeked out and saw him.

-There was a struggle
outside Xana's room.

♪♪

Ethan was mortally wounded.

Xana fought for her life.

But they couldn't save
each other.

[ Dog barks ]

-The dog's barking.

Dylan hears some yelling
and some commotion.

You know, she's yelling upstairs
for the dog to stop barking.

-Dylan got up
and went to her door again.

This time, when she looked out,

she saw the dark figure
of a man dressed all in black.

-He's wearing a mask.

All she can see are his eyes
and his bushy eyebrows,

which really stand out to her.

And he just walks right past her
without saying anything

and walks out the back
of the house.

All of this takes place
within about 15 minutes.

This is still about 4:15 AM.

And she stays in her room

and she doesn't call
police for another eight hours.

♪♪

-So this is one
of the real mysteries

of what happened that morning.

Why did Dylan not notify police

that something was wrong until
around 12 noon on November 13th?

-We don't know why that
call came in at noon

and not in the middle
of the night.

-What happened?
Why the eight-hour delay?

♪♪

-One of the biggest unanswered
questions about these murders

was why did surviving
roommate Dylan

not call police for eight hours

after seeing the suspect
in the house

in the middle of the night?

-The affidavit says,
after seeing this man,

Dylan enters into
a frozen shock phase.

-She said, quote, that she was
in a "frozen shock phase."

A frozen shock phase

-Why not call police?

Could she have been in shock
for that long?

-When the world first learned

that Dylan had actually laid
eyes on the killer,

I think there was a lot
of confusion.

I mean, the truth is,
it's the middle of the night.

She opens her door
and sees a strange man.

She probably had no idea
what had happened in the house,

but it's frightening enough to
see a strange man in your house

in the middle of the night.

And so it's understandable

that a 19 year old
would be slightly shocked.

-She was paralyzed with fear
in that moment,

and self-preservation
becomes the number one priority.

And so it does
not surprise me at all.

that she locked her door
and was frozen with fear

and that there was
such a delayed response.

-Another thing that police had
in their possession

from the beginning that
the public knew nothing about

turned out to be
a critical piece of evidence.

♪♪

-The arriving first police
officer on scene

did see a knife sheath.

That knife sheath
had on it a Marine Corps logo.

-The knife sheath was found
with Kaylee and Maddie.

As an investigator,

you're securing that item to
preserve whatever is on there,

be it a fingerprint, a hair,
DNA, blood, sweat, anything.

♪♪

-The crime lab then
would have worked to try

to extract DNA from that item.

Now, assuming
that this was just touch DNA

and perhaps skin cells
or maybe a little bit of sweat,

this would have been
a very small amount of DNA.

But if they're successful
at that extraction,

then they will create
what's called an STR profile.

-A DNA profile was obtained
from the sheath.

Significant development
in the case.

Huge, nuclear bomb
in this investigation.

-In early December,

Alina Smith
and Kristine Cameron

discover some information
on their Facebook page,

and it could dramatically
alter the investigation.

-We had a member on our page
by the name of Pappa Rodger,

and the way he spoke

gave everybody just,
like, a very, like, off feeling.

-They weren't your normal,
inquisitive, you know,

true crime questions.

They were very detailed,

very descriptive statements
about the crime scene.

He would talk about
where the bodies were positioned

in the house, which really made
a lot of people uncomfortable.

And the way
he phrased questions.

"Do we think the person took
something from the scene?"

And people would reply,
"Do you?"

"I do."

Alina and I talked about
how creepy he was.

And then, tons of people
talked about,

"I bet you the killer's
on this page.

We have
a quarter of a million people.

I'm sure the killer is
on this page."

-If the killer did in fact
join this Facebook group,

I think what we're looking at

is some of his own need
to be looked at.

The difficulty about
a crime for the criminal

who wants credit is, if nobody's
figured out you've done it.

how do you get credit?
Part of how that need

gets satisfied is you sit back
and you watch.

♪♪

-Moscow police and the FBI were
quietly investigating the DNA

that was left behind
on the knife sheath,

and the public knew nothing
about this.

But there was a parallel
investigation going on, as well,

based on something
entirely different,

and they definitely needed
the public for that.

-We started looking for video
the day of the crime.

Officers on scene had identified
certain residences in the area

that had video cameras.

-Police were able to put
together

that they were looking for
a particular vehicle.

-A white car on the night
of the murder is seen driving up

and down the street, and then,
immediately after the murders,

it's seen speeding away.

♪♪

-In this case, by looking
at things such as the distance

between headlights,
the wheelbase,

and some other dimensions that
they can put against the video,

they were able to determine the
make and model of the vehicle.

-It's a Hyundai Elantra
from the years 2011 to 2016,

and it's white, and the
investigators put it out there.

-Perhaps
the Hyundai was seen here.

It may have been seen
up in this direction.

There's an apartment complex
and the road loops around.

-We are confident
that the occupant or occupants

of that vehicle have information

that's critical
to this investigation.

-The police alert about
a white vehicle has raised hopes

that maybe there will be
a break in this case soon.

-We do know that police have
a lot more surveillance video.

They tell us
that they've pretty much gotten

all the video from the area
around the house

where the murders happened,

and now they're expanding
that perimeter.

-They found CCTV footage
of a white car driving

near state lines headed toward

Washington State University
campus.

-Washington State University is
in Pullman, Washington,

and the two college towns,

they're similar in many
respects,

and they're practically
twin cities.

♪♪

-A Washington State University
campus officer

checked for white Elantras
on campus

and identified a white Hyundai
Elantra at a certain apartment.

The car was investigated

and determined to belong to
a graduate student there

named Bryan Kohberger.

-Bryan Kohberger was
a PhD student in criminology

at Washington State University.

-Investigators made multiple
inquiries about Kohberger

and gathered some additional
background information.

-He was also a TA,

known for being an incredibly
punitive grader.

Everyone kind of hated him,

especially the women
in his classes.

He had a tendency to,

I think someone described it
as like mansplaining.

-Police also learned that he'd
been involved at a traffic stop.

It was a month earlier,
and it was captured

on the body camera
of a WSU campus police officer.

-Hello, I am Officer Loingus.
-Officer.

-Stop's being audio
and video recorded.

-Kohberger is pulled over
by a female police officer

in Pullman, Washington, for
essentially running a red light.

And what you see is somebody

who's not intimidated to
interact with a police officer

in a somewhat exhaustive way.

-You ran the red light.
-What actually happened was

I was stuck in the middle
of the intersection,

so I was forced --
-Yeah. I was behind you

the whole time. Yeah.
-Yeah.

-He keeps repeating
his position,

which is that, in the state
he grew up in, in Pennsylvania,

that's not a law.
-In Pennsylvania,

when you're stuck
in the intersection,

you have to make the left.
So what would

the appropriate thing
for me to have done?

-Not --
-Just -- Just --

-You're not supposed
to block an intersection

like that in Washington.

So just by you blocking
the intersection,

that's technically
a ticketable violation.

-He's not argumentative
with her,

but he maintains his position
without ever coming out

and saying, "I shouldn't
be getting this ticket."

-But in that situation,

the best thing to do
then would be back up?

Not...

-I don't know if there's a best
thing to do in that situation.

-He has a level
of cognitive rigidity.

He's got a fixed idea
about the situation,

about what he didn't do wrong,

and he's never able to
really pivot from that.

-Yeah, when I'm from,
Pennsylvania,

we actually don't have,
like, crosswalks.

-Oh,
-And even when she says

she's going
to let him go with a warning,

he continues again to try
and understand the situation.

And what we see is somebody

who's having a hard time
disengaging.

-Never even occurred to me
that that was actually

something wrong, but I --
-Yeah.

-Well, except for the fact
that...

-He didn't know
how to be socially appropriate.

So, with Kohberger,

what we know is that he probably
had a hard time fitting in.

-Because of that traffic stop
in October, police in Pullman

actually had Bryan Kohberger's
cell phone number.

They'd already pulled
the cell phone tower data

from the King Road area
in Moscow

from the night of the crime.

And, so, even without getting
a warrant,

they were able to compare
the last four digits

of Kohberger's number with all
of the cell phone numbers

that pinged on that tower from
the time frame of the murder.

But they came up empty, and
this was really a major setback,

and the investigators found
themselves

all the way back at square one.

♪♪

-Despite having
cell phone tower data,

which failed to place
Bryan Kohberger

near the King Road house
at the time of the crime,

authorities, they were
not ready to throw in the towel

and they continued to dig deeper
into Kohberger's background

and they still really viewed him
as a potential suspect

at that point.

-I don't think that Kohberger
really had any friends.

In high school,
he was very overweight.

He was bullied.

He was remembered as being
very creepy toward girls.

One thing that Bryan Kohberger
had done when he was a teenager,

he had posted regularly on this
forum for visual snow syndrome.

-Visual snow syndrome is,
first of all,

a neurological condition
that is not well understood.

People who experience it

describe it as seeing
white auras or white

images that look
very similar to static

that we would have seen
on old-fashioned analog TVs.

And it never really goes away.
And so, as you can imagine,

it's not uncommon to find,
in this population, higher rates

of depression, higher rates
of anxiety and stress responses.

-A lot of people
who suffer from this start

to see their own life
as kind of surreal,

almost like they're
in a video game.

-This posting I'm looking at
is from Kohberger

as a teenager on a forum
for visual snow syndrome.

And this is July 5th of 2011.

He writes, "It is as if I am
playing a role.

I feel like an organic sack
of meat with no self-worth,

as I am starting
to view everyone as this."

-"I search
for someone to relate to me,

and everyone looks down upon me.
No one can relate.

When I feel slightly calm,
it gets hard to breathe

and I see bright dots
in my vision.

Nothing I do is enjoyable,
I am blank, I have no opinion,

I have no emotion,
I have nothing."

There is a deep sort of
self-loathing in Bryan

that he sort of starts
at this point in time

to direct into the world
around him.

-This is somebody who is in
a level of psychological crisis,

but also there's a malaise
about it.

-Digging into his past,

we find no evidence of Kohberger
having relationships,

and there were really
only a few awkward encounters

that he had with women.

-He went on a Tinder date
with a college student

and it was very, very bizarre.
A woman came forward saying

that they were watching
a Netflix movie in her room,

and then she was uncomfortable.

She got up to go to
the bathroom.

He followed her to the bathroom,

and she didn't know what else
to do,

so she pretended to throw up.

[ Toilet flushes ]

And made, like, throwing up
noises until finally he left.

And he texted her later,

telling her that she had,
like, really nice birthing hips.

He -- I mean, he --

he has a history of
sort of misogynistic behavior.

-At best, we can say
he was socially awkward.

He didn't read a room.

He didn't understand
how to navigate people.

When he's a little bit older,

Kohberger has a local bar
that he goes to,

and he ends up pursuing
the females at the bar,

asking them very personal
information about themselves.

And when they reject him,
he's derogatory towards them,

calling them pejorative names
like bitches.

We're seeing this ongoing
pattern with Kohberger

of struggling socially,
struggling with boundaries,

struggling with appropriateness.

He is someone
that has anger towards women.

-One theory
about Bryan Kohberger,

for which
there is no definitive proof,

is that he fits the profile of
somebody in the incel community,

and that stands for
involuntary celibate.

Basically, it is a big group
of guys

that gather online
in these forums

and spew misogynistic rhetoric.

-It's most often a 20-
and 30-something-year-old White

heterosexual male community.

So these are individuals
that have struggled socially.

And their target of hate becomes
conventionally attractive

thinking or presenting females,
that they refer to as Stacys,

and the male, athletic,
all-around-American kid

that's muscular,
that's attractive,

that gets to Stacys,

and they refer to those guys
as Chads.

And to some degree,

there's a glorification
of violence

toward Stacys and Chads.

-One particular martyr
in the incel community

is a man in California whose
vitriol and anger and hatred

towards women actually resulted
in extreme violence.

His name was Elliot Rodger.

-Hi. Elliot Rodger here.

-Elliot Rodger wanted to be
popular among the ladies.

And, like,
he felt that there was no reason

that they shouldn't like him

because he was rich
and had a nice cars,

but nobody would look at him
or anything,

and he just had a lot of anger
in general.

Well, this is my last video.

-He posted sort of
a revenge video,

um, explaining
his sort of ideology

and also wrote a manifesto,

as mass killers sometimes do.

-Tomorrow is
the day of retribution...

the day in which I will have
my revenge against humanity...

against all of you.

-Our top story tonight --
a 22-year-old

taking the lives of six others

in a shooting rampage
near UC Santa Barbara.

Two women standing
outside a sorority

and one man outside a deli
were gunned down last night.

13 others injured.

And three others
were stabbed to death

at his apartment.

-Elliot Rodger
killed six people

in a stabbing
and shooting spree in 2014,

and he's become a hero
of the --

of the incel movement.

♪♪

-So I thought

that there is a connection

with Pappa Rodger
and Elliot Rodger.

He picked that name
for a specific reason,

and it was because I believe

what Elliot Rodger was saying
resonated with him.

"Pappa Rodger."

He wanted to be, like,
the daddy of Elliot Rodger

or, like, you know, bigger than
what Elliot Rodger had done.

♪♪

-It's important to note that
no evidence has emerged

tying either Brian Kohberger
or Pappa Rodger

to online posts in incel forums

or that they expressed
admiration for Elliot Rodger.

But the parallels --
they really are hard to ignore.

-Since that shooting, there are
phrases that sometimes come up.

"I'm going to go E.R.
the situation."

That's a direct reference
to Elliot Rodger

and somebody saying,

"I'm going to go shoot
several Stacy's and Chad's."

♪♪

-The sorority
that he was targeting

was the same one
that Kaylee was a part of.

-The fact
that Elliot Rodger targeted

the Alpha Phi sorority house
at UC Santa Barbara,

the same sorority that
Kaylee Goncalves belonged to.

Is that a coincidence?

♪♪

-In the weeks after the murders,

the Facebook group
stayed very active,

but one particular contributor
really stood out.

-When the police said

that they were looking for
a white Elantra,

that just set off pandemonium
on the page.

Pappa Rodger was insistent this
white Elantra was a red herring,

that it had nothing to do
with the crime, was bogus,

that we should be
focusing on other things.

-In the first weeks
of December,

despite having no proof at all.

the members of the forum
began to speculate

that Pappa Rodger
was actually the killer.

♪♪

-People would ask
for his removal.

Like, "You're gonna
get rid of this guy or what?

'Cause he's kind of scaring me.
He's freaking me out."

But I saw no reason
to remove him.

♪♪

-At the end of December,
I had to travel

where I was going to be offline
and not be able to help.

So we asked this member
to help out

for a little while
as a moderator.

♪♪

Pappa Rodger
got into a big fight

with a lot of people.

He would fight incessantly
with members in our page.

♪♪

-The wanting to see
the maximum destruction,

wanting to see the effects
of your decision-making

and stirring the pot
with the online community

is something we do see sometimes
in narcissistic individuals.

-He had gotten several warnings.

And this moderator that
we had asked to help fill in

removed him from the page.

♪♪

-I was not happy
with that decision.

When you remove
somebody like that,

a good chunk of their
information goes with them.

There's a lot of information
that's now deleted completely.

And what if there's
some key evidence there?

-Thankfully, we started taking
tons of screenshots of things

that he said on the page
before it was removed.

♪♪

Pappa Rodger was removed
from the page

somewhere between
4:00 and 6:00 p.m.,

and within the hour,
Pappa Rodger opens

a new Facebook group called

"Moscow Murders Anything Goes."

♪♪

-Once police started
looking into Bryan Kohberger,

the more they learned about him,

the more intriguing he became
as a potential suspect.

-When Bryan Kohberger turned out
to be a criminology student,

that added an entirely new layer
to the story.

♪♪

He ended up going
to community college

and sort of developing

a really intense interest
in, um, murder.

[ Chuckles ]
And, uh...

And that sort of carried him
into grad school and beyond.

He studied under a very,
very prominent professor

who's a serial-killer expert,

and I think that that
might have fascinated him.

But he was known academically

for having an interest
specifically

in crime scenes and DNA.

-In the case of Kohberger,

he obviously took it
a step further by trying

to obtain a doctorate degree
in criminology.

It's hard to know what his
motivation and perspective was,

but given how this individual
seems to have a high need

for specificity,
for precision...

While we don't know for sure --
and it's speculation --

it's not unreasonable to think

that what he was
really also trying to do

was understand
how to commit a perfect crime.

♪♪

♪♪

-By the second week in December,

even though they had
cellphone tower data,

which failed to place him
at the scene of the crime,

authorities, they were
still keeping close tabs

on potential suspect
Bryan Kohberger.

This was as the fall semester
was coming to a close.

-He made plans to drive
across the country home

to Pennsylvania
for winter break.

His dad flew out
to make the drive with him.

♪♪

-I suspect
that there was some type

of physical surveillance
involved --

if not for the full trip,

then at least a portion --
a good portion of the trip.

-They were stopped a couple
times by police in Indiana.

-Okay.

-It's a strange exchange.

Bryan seemed to avoid saying
where they were really headed.

-People theorize that the police
who made these stops

were aware of who he was

and had intelligence about his
connection to a possible crime.

-Perhaps there was a reason

why they wanted
to slow him down --

maybe for the surveillance
to catch up with him.

Perhaps it was also to see what
was going on inside the vehicle.

-Officers never ticketed
Kohberger

for any traffic violations,
and they let him go.

♪♪

-And upon arrival
in Pennsylvania,

authorities were keeping
an eye on Kohberger

as a person of interest.

♪♪

-DNA extracted from the knife
sheath found at the crime scene

didn't yet point to
one particular individual,

but it helped investigators
establish a family profile.

-If they only do have
that touch DNA

and that one piece
of genetic evidence,

they are going to need other
evidence to help back that up

and tie a suspect
directly to that crime scene.

They have to collect DNA
directly from that individual

and compare it against

the court-admissible
genetic profile.

♪♪

-At the time,
Bryan Kohberger was staying

at his parents' house
in a gated community

called Indian Mountain Lake.

-The first thing they look to do

is retrieve
discarded household trash.

♪♪

-But once Kohberger
was in Pennsylvania,

he was, according to the police,

super hypervigilant about
not leaving prints anywhere.

He wore gloves
everywhere he went.

♪♪

-How someone acts
after a crime could be argued

to be relevant if it suggests
consciousness of guilt.

Why would somebody
be wearing gloves

when they're putting out the
garbage or cleaning their car?

Is it because
they're trying to eliminate

certain fingerprint evidence

or anything that could be
tied back to them?

-Unfortunately for him,

his parents were not being
as hypervigilant.

♪♪

So police were able to get
the family's trash.

♪♪

-They pulled that DNA from

Bryan Kohberger's
parents' house,

and it didn't match the suspect.

Well, there's two males in this
home that we know of, right?

There's Bryan and his father.

This is male DNA.

Let's run
a paternity comparison.

♪♪

And they got the match then.

♪♪

They apparently got
his father's DNA.

Now, because his father
is a first-degree relative,

they can still use
that STR profile.

-That was the final straw.

Investigators at that point

were 99.9998% certain
they had the right guy.

♪♪

-While investigators
were following

the DNA trail in Pennsylvania,

police in Idaho
were still troubled

by that cellphone tower data
from the night of the attack.

But now they had
enough other evidence

to apply for a search warrant

for Kohberger's
full cellphone tracking data.

♪♪

-Bryan Kohberger's cell records

were a treasure trove
of information.

Wouldn't you know --
Mr. Kohberger's phone

was turned off at 2:47 a.m.

the night of the murders.

It also revealed that the phone
was turned back on

in traveling from Idaho back
into Washington after 4:30 a.m.

Now, why would someone
turn off their phone

at 2:30 in the morning...

only to turn it back on at 4:30?

-Any time somebody
turns off their phone

suggests that they're trying
not to be picked up

by communications networks
during that particular time.

-Prior to the murders...

a continued examination
of Bryan Kohberger's cellphone

revealed that on
12 separate occasions,

Mr. Kohberger's phone is found
in the area of King Road

essentially in
the middle of the night.

♪♪

Was he stalking
our young victims?

Was he preparing
to commit the crime?

See, I look at that
and those 12 occasions...

and then I look
at November 13th,

and I say that occasion
was different

because when he left his house
that 13th time,

at 2:47 a.m.,
he shut his phone off.

Why?

I think it was "game on"
at that point.

-For the sprawling network
of federal,

state, and local authorities
investigating these murders,

all the pieces of the puzzle

were finally starting
to come together.

-This isn't just DNA.

It's the DNA of the guy

who happens to own
a Hyundai -- 2015, white --

who lives in the area...

whose phone number

happened to ping off the tower
13 times total...

happened to be shut off
that night...

who's approximately 5'10"
with bushy eyebrows.

Bryan Kohberger
is either the killer

or the unluckiest person
in America.

♪♪

-The FBI assembled a team
on the ground in Pennsylvania.

All of the parties agreed
it was time to act.

♪♪

-A SWAT team rushed

from the forested area
around the house

and surrounded it,
broke the front window.

[ Glass shatters ]

The sounds are shattering glass
and breaking wood.

♪♪

-He was found to be awake
in the residence.

A SWAT team from
the Pennsylvania State Police,

in coordination
with federal authorities,

served that arrest warrant.

[ Siren wails ]

-For a lot of people,
there was sort of

a sweet sense of justice.

He's charged with murdering
them in the dead of night

while these kids felt safe
in their bedrooms...

and in the dead of night,

the SWAT team
came for Kohberger.

[ Siren wails ]

-Major breaking news Friday.

An arrest in the case
47 days later.

Bryan Kohberger,
a graduate student

studying criminology at
Washington State University,

was taken into custody
in Pennsylvania.

-When Bryan Kohberger
got arrested,

there was, like,
this feeling of,

"Okay. It wasn't any person
that we had ever talked about."

♪♪

-And we're like,
"Oh, that's him!"

♪♪

-He's tall.
He's got the bushy eyebrows.

♪♪

You get, like,
this kind of sick feeling

in the pit of your stomach.
Like, "This is the guy."

♪♪

-Everybody did their job,
and they did it well.

I think there was
a collective exhale

among all of the citizens
here in town

and probably further afield
than that.

♪♪

♪♪

-On January 5th, just
a few days after the arrest,

Kohberger made his first
appearance in an Idaho court.

I was there on the ground
on the scene to report,

and the vibe was very somber.

It was really fraught
with emotion.

Remember, this is a small town.

They don't really deal with
high-profile cases like this.

Even going
in the courthouse today,

I mean, it's a small courthouse.

♪♪

-You could only imagine
the tension in that courtroom

as Bryan Kohberger makes

his very first appearance
to the world,

and all you can hear

is the sound of his shackles
clanging across the floor.

-Bryan Kohberger
never looked at

the victims' families
in court Thursday,

only looking in the direction
of his lawyer and the judge.

-When it came time
for Bryan Kohberger

to actually stand up
and enter a plea,

he wouldn't do it --
he stood silent.

So that forces the judge

to just enter
a "not guilty" plea for him.

And there are
a couple of reasons

why a lawyer and a client
might decide to do that,

one of which is that
you have the right preserved

to question the mental state

of the suspect
at the time of the crime.

And we don't know
if that's why they did it,

but it's possible.

-One thing that was clear after
the initial court appearance --

this would be a long
and drawn-out process

for the victims' families...

and there would be
no resolution anytime soon.

-This is not the end
of this investigation.

In fact,
this is a new beginning.

-When the trial happens,

it's -- it's gonna be
ripping off

a very nasty Band-Aid.
that has to happen.

It's gonna be uncomfortable.

It's -- It's gonna sting.

-It's gonna be quite a circus,

and I think a lot of details
that have not come out

are going to be
sort of showcased,

and we're going to learn
so much more

about what actually happened
that night.

-Some of the things
that will perhaps come out

will be the efforts they took
to find the knife...

♪♪

...if the knife was purchased
by Kohberger.

♪♪

-The Hyundai Elantra
was taken into custody.

His laptop. His cellphone.

Those items are
going to be the subject

of intense
forensics examinations,

and, undoubtedly,

there could be information
in those items

that will support
the prosecution's case.

♪♪

-The key element in the trial

is gonna be the touch DNA
collected at the scene,

but experts say
there is a chance

that it doesn't even
hold up in court.

Forensically, touch DNA
is not as strong as DNA

from blood
or other bodily fluids

because touch DNA

is actually more susceptible
to contamination.

-Touch DNA can be transferred.

You can shake someone's hand,

and then they can leave
your DNA somewhere.

So I do think that when
you only have touch DNA,

you really do have to have
other evidence

that ties someone
to a crime scene.

It's not a slam dunk
like it might be in some cases

where you find
the perpetrator's blood

mixed with the victim's blood.

-This is a capital case.

The fact that the prosecution
is seeking the death penalty

against Bryan Kohberger

really turns the volume up
on this case

because his life
now hangs in the balance.

♪♪

-In the wake of the arrest

and with a trial looming
at some point,

the Facebook sleuths,
Alina and Kristine,

decide to go back over
all of their discussions,

and they go back over the
probable-cause affidavit, too --

the PCA.

And that's when they discovered
something kind of alarming.

♪♪

-There was a statement
by Pappa Rodger on November 30th

where he says,
"Of the evidence released,

the murder weapon
has been consistent

as a large fixed blade knife.

This leads me to believe
they found the sheath."

People were like, "Where
are you getting this from?"

-And then, in January,
the PCA comes out

and we see that the sheath
in fact was left behind,

which again, makes us all think

that this very well
could have been the suspect.

-Alina and Kristine
also went back over

Pappa Rodger's
new Facebook group,

"Moscow Murders Anything Goes."

And they discovered
something very odd.

-When Bryan Kohberger
is arrested,

Pappa Rodger profile goes blank.

You don't see it anymore.

There's no more interactions
at all.

♪♪

That just sent chills
up my spine --

like, "Oh, my God.
He probably was in the group."

♪♪

-That whole profile
gets erased from the Internet.

♪♪

And that admin gets erased,
as well.

And poof -- gone.

-I believe that
the police and the FBI

probably worked to get all
of this information offline

so they can use it
in their case.

-There's no mention
of Pappa Rodger

in the probable-cause affidavit

or really any evidence that
the FBI took down the account.

In fact, there may be
no connection

to Kohberger at all,

but Alina and Kristine
could not help but notice

something very striking

about the Pappa Rodger
profile picture.

-His actual profile picture

is of a Russian military guy
from Moscow.

In my eyes,
he does resemble the suspect.

I see it 100%.

-If you were to look
at Kohberger

sideways like his profile,

I feel like that is --
looks just like him.

-I think, for Kohberger,

if, in fact, he was that
profile, Pappa Rodger,

if this was a thrill-seeking
situation for him,

a thrill-seeking event,
you know?

Dropping these little clues,
dropping these hints

helps him
not only relive the high,

but it helps him stay in control

and create sort of
a secondary high for himself,

which is the hunt --
the hunt for him.

-For over a year,
the house on King Road

had really stood like a scar
in that community, a blight,

a horrible reminder of what
happened that October night.

And the University of Idaho
made a decision --

that house needed to come down.

♪♪

-You can see
that excavator at work,

making quick work
of the front side of the house,

which is essentially gone now.

-All the evidence that
could possibly be garnered

from the site has been garnered.

All the belongings
have been moved out.

-Do you think
it's at all possible

that the prosecution is
so confident about their case

they're not worried at all
about the house standing?

-I've been told that exactly.
I've been told 100%.

"The amount of stuff
we have, Steve. Relax."

-After assessing everything

and the weight of the evidence
against Mr. Kohberger,

it certainly doesn't
look great for him.

But he has that right
to a fair trial,

and he's assumed innocent

until he is proven guilty
in that Idaho court of law.

♪♪

-The two surviving roommates,
they've never spoken publicly,

and by all accounts, they were

really severely traumatized
by the events of that night,

but they're trying to move
forward with their lives.

And for the families
of the four victims,

their wounds are deep and raw,

and not even a guilty conviction
or a sentence of death

will fill the void left by
the loss of their loved ones.

-The main reason
I'm up here today

is so that everybody
can understand what we lost.

♪♪

Because we lost
four beautiful souls.

♪♪

-When I would meet people,
they say, you know,

"Tell me about yourself."

And the first thing I'd say is,
"Well, I have this daughter,

and she's -- You know,
here's a picture of her.

She's -- She's on the
dean's list at, uh, college."

♪♪

-It's hard that we are without

these four beautiful kids
with us tonight.

We are eternally grateful

that we spent
so much time with him.

And I want to remind you

that that's the most important
message that we have

for you and your families --
is to make sure

that you spend as much time
as possible with those people

because time is precious

and it's something
you can't get back.

♪♪

-Through all this,
I hope we can all look

through that dark tunnel
and see the light...

and follow that light.

♪♪

And I pray that we have
justice some day.
