Almost one year ago,
we bought our parents

a house here in LA,
and they packed up
their entire lives

in the mountains
and moved here to be
with us and the grandkids.

But not everybody was
on board with the move.

I've never lived
in a city before.

-Or with the house.
-What doesn't work?

-Everything.
-Or even the design.

This is a Spanish-style home.

That's the look, like,
"You guys are insane."

We may have messed up
in more ways than one.

It's been eight months
since we started
this renovation,

and the end is still
nowhere in sight.

I know they're frustrated
and they're getting anxious.

This is the most important
project of our careers,

and it's quickly turning
into the biggest nightmare.

We are failing mom and dad.

[opening theme music playing]

-This is my nightmare.
-It's really frustrating.

Oh, this is not good.

What?

-I'm stressed.
-You're not alone.

[Jonathan] This all has
to be ripped out.

-I kind of feel like
throwing up.
-And rebuilt.

I don't want to finish
a beautiful house,

-and then they aren't happy.
-No pressure.

My hope is that
they will see this house

-as everything
they dreamed of.
-I love the house now.

Before, it was a love-hate.

Mom and dad have been stuck
in this holding pattern

going between my guest house
and Drew's guest house

for nearly a year while
we renovate their
new home here

in Santa Monica.

The whole project
was our idea,
so I feel guilt is probably

-the biggest obstacle
we're dealing with right now.
-100%.

We really appreciate
all you're doing for us.

We're excited to get you guys
into your house eventually.

All hands on deck.
Everybody's got to be here.

We've got to get
everything done.

Thankfully, we got
the ADU done,

and that put a smile on
their faces for a bit.

This is phenomenal.

[Drew] The main house is
a completely different story.

We have been plagued
with delays.

We haven't even
started framing yet.

Frustration is high,
and productivity is low.

We're just hoping
that all of this is going
to be worth it in the end.

This is a way bigger
scope of work than

-we originally thought
it was going to be.
-Yeah.

600 square foot addition,
plus every single utility

in this house is going
to be brand new.

Once the power company comes
and moves our utilities

over to the new power pole,
then we can all of a sudden

start framing up our walls,

which means we can get
our rough-in started.

But until that happens,
we're still months away

from getting mom and dad
in here.

The hard thing is they were
in their dream home.

They loved
the Rocky Mountains.
They loved Banff.

They had a community
of friends.

They made a big sacrifice
to move down here

to be close to us
and the grandkids.

So the quicker we can get
them into their house,

the quicker they're going
to have that same sense
of home.

The main thing is I want
to get it to the point

-where we can start
getting some walls up.
-Walls up, yep.

I'm trying to think if there's
anything else we can do

that'll make this feel like
home for mom and dad.

I think it's going to come
down to how we actually

style it and finish it
in the end,
bring in all their memories,

bring in some
of their artwork.

It's a Spanish-style home,
but there needs to be

a bit of that country flair,
the way that my mom and dad

have always loved from
their years and years

of being a cowboy
and a cowgirl.

They like a lot of heavy,
rustic elements,

dark woods
and chunky furniture.

So the challenge
will be figuring out
how to incorporate

a few of those elements into
an overall Spanish design.

We've lived with our parents
for decades.

We know how picky
and particular they are.

Now I see where Drew
gets it from.

We've been waiting for
a power company to show up.

Until that happens,
there's not much
meaningful progress

we can make.

At the very least,
we can start to clean up

the front of the house,
which is going to get

the Spanish-style upgrade
it deserves.

This is going to be
mom's office, mom's art room.

I don't feel like
she wants to look outside

and see prison bars.

We'll clean this all up.

In fact, by removing Fort Knox
here and putting in

those beautiful arches
with the extended front porch,

it gives us room
for a beautiful new window

and a classic Spanish-style
arched front door.

Well, mom said they prefer
clean lines over
a curved architecture,

but that's not the style
of this exterior.

Yeah, and to make sure
we don't get on Mom's
bad side,

we will put in some gardens
and bring back that nature

that they left in Banff.

It's now going to feel
so much classier.

I mean, this is adding
so much curb appeal,

just cleaning this up anyway.

Giving back to our parents
is the most important part
of this reno,

and it's the whole reason
we're doing this project

in the first place.

So we're turning one of
the home's three bedrooms

into a music room for Dad
and another into an art studio
for Mom.

Oh, hey. You're pushing me
out of the way.

And in order to do that,
I have to bring the artiste
herself.

-Okay, take a breath.

-Calm.
-Okay, wait.

-Where do we start?
-You're allowed to fill
one basket.

Wait, a basket?

I thought you were going
to have a cart.

Okay, you need to hold

My mom has never actually
had an art room, ever.

This is going
to be so special.

Yeah, it's going to be amazing
for her.

And we want to lay it out
in a way that inspires her
to paint.

Because some of the paintings
that she used to do

and some of the sketches,
she hasn't done that
in 50 years.

So I want to see
her doing that again.

[Linda] We just want to outfit
the art space as much
as we can.

So we know that she likes
oil painting.

-She wants to get
into calligraphy.
-Yes.

She loves organization.
That's where you get it from.

-Paper, brushes, stencils.

the power company is here

to move the utilities from
the middle of our new kitchen

over to the power pole,
which means we can finally
remove the old walls

and start framing for
our large main house addition.

Our work is just
getting started.

We need to build the bones
of Mom and Dad's new home.

We're keeping it single-story
so our parents can age
in place,

but we're significantly
expanding the footprint

by adding on a much larger
primary bedroom suite,

a functional kitchen,
and bumping out
the living room

and dining room so that Mom
and Dad have enough space

to surround themselves
with our entire

extended family here
on the West Coast.

I'm bringing mom by the house
just to assure her

that work is happening,
things are moving forward,

but I don't know if this
is gonna make her feel better

or worse about the situation
we're in.

So there's a little bit curve

So we're maintaining
the original aesthetic,

and we're going to match it
on this side as well.

a week away

from all framing being done.

it seems to me there's still

a lot that has to be done.

We've been living out
of a suitcase for a year now,

and I'm just anxious
to see it all done.

We're powering through framing
as quickly as possible,

and normally we wouldn't move
forward with anything else

while we tackle this
monumental job,

but we need to save time
wherever we can,

so we're installing
our new custom windows
at the same time.

There are just so many things
happening,

and we're rushing,
trying to get caught up.

picture window

in the living room
does not fit.

If we framed this in at
the wrong size,

that is going to cost us
even more time,

time that we do not have
at all.

It feels like there's
an extra layer.

a little nervous having
a window pane

this large on a house that
is this deep in construction?

One of the most important
decisions we need to make is,

how on earth are we going
to blend Mom and Dad's rustic,

Northwestern style
with the elegant
Spanish style of this house

in a way that makes them
feel right at home?

And I think the fireplace
is going to be

the most contentious point,
because I think that

a gorgeous,
curvy Spanish-style fireplace

would be absolutely perfect.

But Mom and Dad have said
that they want no curves.

They want nice,
straight, bulky,

like what they've always had.

And this might be one
of the places where we have

to actually put our foot down.

I'll tell you what's giving me
a little bit of sweat.

What?

So mom said she did not want
a lean on the front.

She specifically said
she wanted it flat.

Did you lie to mom
and tell her that

-you're going to do it the way
she wants it?
-No, I'm not lying.

I'm omitting.

They wanted, like,
a chunky wood mantle,

but that's a no-go for
the style of this home.

So we'll try and meet them
halfway with

a bulky white stone fireplace
around instead.

We wanted that
beautiful curve,

but obviously Mom said no,

so we'll do a plaster feature
over the fireplace that looks
like stone,

not straight up and down
like Mom wanted,

because we want to keep
the feature as
Spanish-looking as possible.

I think it's beautiful.

Everything about this
is the statement

the moment you walk in
the door.

But it's not what
they asked for.

All right.

It's not that
we're withholding from Mom.

It's that we're delaying
the joy.

Yes, mom and dad
like a more rustic style.

But this fireplace is in
the middle of our living room,

which is going to be
surrounded by Spanish
influence.

We've got a beautiful
original cove ceiling.

We're rebuilding
the curb doorways

to match what
was originally here.

And we're capping
it off out front by

adding several stylish arches.

We've been making some
executive design decisions

in spaces where we feel
it's absolutely necessary.

But somewhere where
it has to be exactly

what mom and dad want it
to be is the heart

of every Scott family home,
the kitchen.

[Joanne] I love to cook,
and so a kitchen's

really important to me.

-Best cook ever.
-You know how they say the way

to a man's heart is
through his stomach?

I worked hard on that.

[Drew] Before, it was way
too small for our family.

I mean, this is where
Mom and Dad are going

to be baking cookies
with the grandkids.

This is where we have
our epic family get-togethers.

It has to be absolutely
perfect.

Otherwise, I'm pretty sure
Mom will kill us.

Ideally, I want to make sure
we line up the sink

-and the range.
-Yeah.

So mom doesn't need
to move around too much,

because this is going to be
a really big island.

We'll make sure it has tons
of storage, bar seating

on one side so we can
all hang out there together.

But there still needs
to be enough room

for the grandkids
to run around.

And we'll have a pantry
over in this area to store

enough food for
all the hungry Scotts.

I don't like the idea
that we don't have

all windows here,
because I know Mom
loves to stand,

should be at the range,
looking out the window,

seeing what's happening
out there.

She would love to be right

I'm also more concerned

I'm not going to lie.

I think this is
a terrible idea

because mom and dad
have already been
bouncing back and forth

between our houses
for a year now.

We told them that they could
get into their house.

This is going to delay them,

of those things

that it's not the time
to do it.

We need to focus on getting
everything done.

it's going to take us
an absolute minimum
of six weeks.

I feel like,

is derailing faster than
it's coming together.

he is pushing us way beyond
both our timeline

and my breaking point because
he's having us tear out that

whole side of the kitchen,
reframe for new windows.

We'll have to resubmit
to the city,
have it inspected.

This has been so much work
to pull together the change.

It's worth it.

We don't have approval
from the city yet for this.

Because this is a sheer wall,

everything has come
to a crashing halt.

We literally cannot
close up the walls.

still not approved it.

Worst case scenario,
could be seven months, right?

For the kitchen,

a brushed gold or brass.

As far as design style goes,
this is a huge change

for the two of us.

I like that it's not as heavy
and clunky looking.

Because we always had horses,

we kind of like to pay tribute
to that.

I might not always be up
totally with the current
trends,

but I don't mind mixing it up
a bit.

Well, we have
so many different tiles
you could choose from.

So if you're thinking
some of the detail

for the floor or in
the bathroom walls.

I don't care for the white.
I would want either a pattern

like that or some
calming color.

So introduce color.

Yeah, I mean,
I wouldn't want to have

-the same in every bathroom.

in a spa-like blue?

throughout the house.

six weeks since
Drew's decision

to tear apart the kitchen wall
to add more windows,

but we finally got approval
from the city to close up
the walls.

We have so many people working

We're ready for this project

so it's fully secure,
mom and dad
are fully comfortable,

and then I think
we'll be happy.

But until now,
it's been exhausting.

I feel like if I bring
anything up,

you start to get really
defensive with me.

this project to be over.

feel like an original
Spanish-style home.

I can't get over how much
bigger this feels.

It better feel big.
We busted our butts
in our timeline

making this addition happen.

But now, mom and dad are going
to have the space

to spend time at home
with their entire family.

We know how she likes to cook
for big parties, so yeah.

But nothing feels better than
when the paint happens

and everything is uniform.

All of a sudden, wow,
you have a house.

It's built with love
for mom and dad.

We're inching closer
and closer to finishes,

which actually felt impossible
a year ago.

Well, it felt impossible
a few weeks ago.

Before that happens,
we're using some
new technology

to seal every single leak
in the home's envelope

so it's as energy efficient
as possible.

This is a house that
will not have any problems.

We don't want mom and dad.
They've dealt with us.

We're a big enough problem.

Yeah, they don't need
any more problems.

One of the huge upsides
to life in LA is that

for the first time
in their lives,

our mom and dad will be able
to use their outdoor space
year round.

We want the outdoor
to be as comfortable

as what they had for
the outdoor in Banff.

-And they were surrounded

So we need to have
some features

that make them feel like
they're at home.

It wasn't cost effective
to bring a mountain in.

So instead, we're going
to bring in a fireplace.

And then we'll do
a nice precast mantle

-around the top here.

[Drew] It'll be one of those
big bulky features

that I know they'll love.

For the yard, I want
to make sure everything

is level back here
so there are no more
trip hazards for dad

or the grandkids
because this is going to be

the popular family hangout,
especially once we install

the outdoor kitchen.

That's fancy.

-That's going to blow
mom and dad's minds.
-Yeah.

-They're gorgeous.

It just looks like real wood.

There's some darker
variations.

And it has knots around
to give that rustic

Northwestern vibe mom and dad
are most comfortable with.

and then directly into

the dining room, living room,
kitchen.

So then I can start putting
cabinets right on top.

I like this. Always thinking
of how to save time.

We can't do a typical
kitchen design with a lot of

upper cabinets because
Mom's 79, Dad's 90.

We can't have them reaching up
high with heavy things,

so we did a lot
more storage down low.

Isn't it crazy to think
Dad just turned 90?

This project has taken
so long,

Dad has entered another
decade of existence.

It's crazy.

We'll start to assemble
just so we can start to see

where everything's going
to fit.

was one foot to have a foot,

so 12 inches.

Which works, because
you can fit plates
in a 12 inch.

But in reality,
I think we could fit full.

but we're so far

My biggest fear is, Mom.

many changes

are going to give me PTSD.

to the cabinets,

We're going to have

Yeah, nothing really changes
other than the depth of this.

Let's just do it.
It's not going to change
our flooring.

It's not going to change
our lighting.

the doors of the cabinets.

All it will change will be
the actual boxes.

And most importantly,
the happiness of our mother.

counter space

with the grandkids cooking

and baking.
I know Mom wants that.

This will be a better island
for three generations

-of family who are going
to get around it.

Mom and Dad's priority
is having enough space

for our family, but Drew and I
want to make sure

that they have enough space
for the things they want
as well.

One of their biggest problems
with this house was that

there was absolutely no space
in the primary bedroom closet.

[Joanne]
You know, Dad and I have
never shared a closet.

He had his clothes
in the next bedroom.

Yeah, that's right.

My dad has gone 90 years
without a closet of his own.

He deserves this.
He deserves to have

For the first time on
this entire project,

I'm actually pretty happy with
the progress we're making.

We've got stucco happening,

casings are going in,
paint choices are being made,

and the kitchen island problem
is fixed.

That looks amazing.

Most importantly,
it shut Drew up.

is to make Drew happy,
but this is great.

I think I actually see
the finish line in
the distance,

but I'm also noticing
some issues that

none of us have considered,
and I want to address them

Mom and dad left a little town
with a population of 10,000

to move to a major
metropolis with

a population of four million.

So they're going to want
some privacy.

So I'm building a wall
to keep the front yard
separate from the street.

The one good thing that
overlaps between both

Spanish and Northwestern
design is a lot of woodwork.

Seeing millwork everywhere,
those wood tones,

it makes it inviting.

We're going a little lighter
in the tones,

which leans Spanish.

And we're pairing that
with some fresh light blues

throughout the house because
mom said they're looking for

calming, spa-like colors
that'll step away

from the darker style
they've had in the past.

From the arches,
that beautiful big fireplace,

this is a Spanish home.

Just has a little boops
of Northwestern vibe.

and we've enlisted

and Mom's art studio.

This is the perfect spot
for Mom.

Remember she was saying
that, like, the last time

she painted was in their small
apartment in Vancouver?

She has some of her old pieces
packed away in storage

-until she actually has
a space to work with it.

She has one that...

hasn't been finished.

Can you imagine having
something that was a passion

of yours that you haven't been
able to do for decades?

-You just have been too busy.
Life gets in the way.

And then to be able
to finish an artistic piece

like what she has 50 years
later, that to me makes it

-something super valuable...

-It's valuable because
it's your mom's.

She works so hard,
and she's always cooking
for all of us.

She needs, like,
her own zen space.

When you give an artist
a canvas, mom,

It was so amazing

This was just a mess
