into displays and things,

The next one was working

I got really good
with the chainsaw,

and I started bringing
home pieces of the logs

that we cut down and
just worked on them

with different tools,
got a lot of practice

and eventually, I just
tried it out on ice.

Dad made all the
sculptures outside.

but she got damaged and broke.

I haven't really been liking
what I've been sketching,

so I thought it'd be helpful

Like, each layer I cut away
is a new gesture or movement.

Why ice?

I made a modest living
carving bears and other animals

out of tree stumps but those
were crude and rudimentary.

With the ice,
it's the opposite.

It's fragile.

Delicate.

Requires patience
and precision.

Two things I've had to learn.

It just gets sore sometimes.

Yeah.

About a year ago, I was carving
a rather large sculpture.

One of my cuts went
off the wrong way,

and the whole thing came
down, and I reached out

to try and catch it, and
it just pinned my hand

and broke a bunch of bones,
so I had to get surgery on it.

That sounds serious.

It was expensive, too.

So I took this job.

You know, I was
afraid I wouldn't

be able to do any of this
anymore, but it healed up.

Now it just hurts sometimes.
