when a heavy horse lands on them.

a former coal-mining village

A 13-year-old male
who has come off his motorbike.

The report is the motorbike is
still on top of the patient.

It sounds as though he's got
an open fracture to one of his legs.

Sounds sore.

An open fracture is when

there's a break in the bone
and a break to the skin.

Complications of that will be
that you could get an infection of

the bone, which is pretty bad
for those patients.

There's also blood vessels and
nerves there, so a loss of sensation

and they can bleed and,
depending on which bone is broken

and how open it is,
they can lose a lot of blood.

where it's been opened,
so we'll stop that bleeding.

Then we'll put it in what we call
a vacuum splint,

which just secures the leg
nice and still in the same position.

Because he's fractured his bones,

if we don't do that, those bones
move and that causes him pain.

So, if we keep them together, nicely
aligned, with that vacuum splint,

that reduces that pain, as well,
so we don't have to give him

as much intravenous pain relief,
because that leg is still.

We've got the gas and air here.
Dad's gonna look after you.

far, but her injuries are serious.

Before they move her,

almost a month in hospital,

after falling off
a stepladder in her garden.

Sandra broke her arm and sternum

and needed skin-graft surgery
to her injured leg.

She continues to have physiotherapy.

Cyclist Marc Heron is still
recovering,

after coming off his bike
on a country road,

He broke 14 bones,
including vertebrae in his neck.

Joe Billingham was taken to hospital
with suspected spinal injuries,

after the horse he was riding
reared and fell on him.

you never think that

these accidents will happen to you.

I've ridden horses for 30 years.

But it was so quick.
It was so sudden.

I was in hospital for... three days,

I think it was, I'm still recovering
from it now, nine weeks on.

Thankfully, a scan revealed
Joe's spine was not damaged,

but he had broken eight ribs.

I've been resting for five weeks
and I've been filling that time in

playing video games.
