Why am I in this basement?

As the host of a popular
True Crime podcast, I'm used

to talking about people in
life threatening situations.

I just never thought
I'd be one of them.

And now I'm wondering,
will I survive long enough

to tell my story?

[Fiona VO] So, how did I get
locked in that basement,

certain I was
going to be killed?

It all started with a
pleasant trip back home

to see my mom and dad.

Home is Benton Springs, Georgia.

I hadn't been back in a while,

and as I drove through those
charming old neighborhoods,

I realized I still
knew these streets

like the back of my hand.

It was a great place to grow
up, but it had its secrets.

That's when it dawned on me,
this is where it all started.

My fascination with true crime,

my desire to know what
lies beneath the surface.

And one of the most haunting
cases I'd ever encountered

was right here where I grew up.

It had to do with the
identity of a baby girl,

a Jane Doe who was found
in the woods 42 years ago.

Who did she belong to?

How did she end up out here
buried in a shallow grave?

And what secrets were
buried with with her?

Who was The Girl with No Name?

[light music]

[Fiona] Hey, Mom!

[Cecily] Ah, Fiona! Oh, Honey.

Oh, oh. It's been too
long. How are you?

You look thin. Have

So many old faces to see.

Oh, speaking of, did
you talk to Raphael?

We sent him an invite, Honey,

but honestly,

ever since he retired from
the Sheriff's Department,

he is just kinda
holed himself up

in that cabin out in the woods.

I just wouldn't
hold out much hope.

I mean, the whole
town will be there.

I got into as a kid,

you could have thrown
me in a jail cell

my curiosity.

You let me look
at old case files,

answered all my dumb questions.

I mean, really, you started my
whole fascination with crime.

I really wouldn't be
where I am without you.

[Raphael] You know, that's
partly why I came down

here tonight.

Do you know about The
Girl with No Name?

Yeah. I stopped at the
memorial on my way in.

Well, tell me what you know.

[Fiona] The remains of a baby
were found

buried outside the town--

Mm-hm, mm-hm.

...but no one could identify
the remains, right?

[Raphael] Mm-hm, I remember the
night the call came in,

nobody ever came forward.

There was no missing persons
report filed. Nothing!

Why are you telling me this?

Well, I was at a
poker game last month.

Bunch of old guys sitting
around talking about old stuff,

and the talk turned to
The Girl with No Name.

Turns out one of the guys
lives near the memorial stone

and he tells me every
year somebody comes

and places fresh flowers the
same month in the spring,

like an anniversary.

I've been thinking
about it ever since.

So, if someone's
doing that every year

and it's the same person,
that means they miss them,

which means they
know them. Right?

[Raphael] Exactly. So I dug
out the old case file

and I think I've
developed some new leads,

but I just don't have
the energy I used to.

So I'm thinking maybe you'd like

to take a look at
this case with me.

Like, get a fresh perspective?

Yeah? Well, when do we start?

Well, I have the whole
file back at the cabin.

Maybe you could swing
by in the morning.

[Raphael laughs] Yeah. Well, I

Um. I'm okay.

Do you have any thoughts
on what happened?

Well, we'll know more when the
ME gets a look at him.

[Sheriff] There's no signs of
a physical struggle.

There's no blood,
there's no bruising.

There's nothing like that.

Everybody in town knew
Raph had a bad ticker.

His medicine cabinet's
full of heart meds.

So what are you saying?

Well, to me it just looks
like a burglary going wrong.

There's some desperate
individual

looking for valuables,

and a big enough scare
would've been enough

to give the old
guy a heart attack.

So, so you're saying

that it was just
some random break in?

[Sheriff] No, I'm not saying
someone's not responsible,

and I will do whatever I can
to find that person, I promise.

He meant a lot to me too.

You said you saw
someone running away?

Kind of.

I, um, I heard a noise
in the backyard,

but by the time I looked up,
they were into the tree line.

So--

And why were you here?

Oh, he asked me to come
over to look at an old case.

The Girl with No Name.

Why did he wanna go over
that old case with you?

He just wanted my help.

It was a case that got
away from him and that,

that's what I do.

I, I look at old cases.

But, um--

What is it?

Well, he did say that
it could be dangerous,

that maybe people would prefer
if the truth was kept secret,

so I--

This Girl with No Name's
a dead end, Fiona.

If someone was trying to
put a stop to that case,

we'd all be goners.

Just about everybody I
know has tried and failed.

Are you gonna be in town
for the next couple of days?

We just may need to ask
you some more questions.

[Sheriff] And what you need

and be with your family.

And we're still waiting
on a medical examiner's

official report but, all
signs are still pointing

to a botched robbery
and a, a heart attack.

I just can't accept that.

Well, I can attest to
his heart condition.

I prescribed him his meds.

I just wish there was
something I could do.

Then mourn his loss,
and celebrate his life.

I know he wouldn't want
any of us moping around

on his account.

[Fiona VO] Now it was clear to me.

I had to do this for Raphael.

My next story would be
"The Girl With No Name".

42 years ago on a
cold winter day,

the remains of a baby
girl were found buried

outside of town near a lake.

There were no
identifying features.

No one ever came forward,
no missing person report.

Raphael was convinced that
someone out there knew something

but never said anything out
of fear or guilt, or both.

Looking at the file, I can
see why they never solved it.

There's nothing aside from
some info on the woman

who found the body,
Vicki Collins.

And there's some
notes in the file

that seem to have
been recently made.

Vineyard, M.H. lawsuit.

I'm not sure what they mean,
but I intend to find out.

[Joseph on phone] Fiona, how
are you holding up?

Hi. I'm okay, I think.

Listen, I have a favor
to ask. Are you free?

Oh!

I'm so sorry I wasn't watching.

- [Joseph] Fiona?
- [Fiona gasps]

Oh, hey, sorry. I didn't
mean to scare you.

[Fiona] No, it, it's okay. I'm
just a little paranoid.

I thought someone

been a little on edge

with everything that
happened with Raph.

As suspected, Raph died
from a heart attack.

I really shouldn't
be sharing this,

but I know how much
he meant to you.

There was something else I

So I've been looking
into the police reports

and it looks like there
was a bone sample taken,

but there wasn't
a DNA test done.

Well, probably because

it was a relatively new
science at the time.

My guess is they wouldn't
have the resources to do it.

So could, could you do it now?

What? Why?

Just, is it possible ?

I guess so. Yeah. The M.E.
is a good friend of mine.

It would take a few days
to retrieve the sample,

run the test, but it is
possible. Is it for your show?

It's for Raph too.

One of the last things
he asked me to do

was to look into it for him.

And after all he did for me,

it's, it's the least I could do.

I'll get on it this afternoon.

my current location

maybe you're seeing something

that it would ruffle
some feathers.

I spent years telling

left the dang thing out.

for prints though,

No. I, I don't know.

I mean, between the tracker

my bag this afternoon.

So he's doing DNA tests.

Apparently not.

[Daisy] It's wild. Well,

Yeah. It was initially built

to house workers
for the vineyard.

Unfortunately, I feel like
this ruins the aesthetic a bit.

[Marcus] And the big house here
dates back to 1825.

Wow.

But there was a fire in 1845,

which claimed most of the
property with a few exceptions:

this cast iron railing here,

and a few of the
details out front.

Now throughout the house,
you'll see various watercolors.

My father did this one here.

Everybody in the Holt
family is a-- is an artist.

But this is the nerve center

where all the boring
stuff happens.

I'm sure it's not that boring!
[giggles]

Cost reports, banking
statements, market updates,

sales projections.

Okay. Maybe it is
a little boring.

Um, do you know a woman
named Vicki Collins?

She, she worked here
20, maybe 30 years ago.

Can't say it rings a bell,

but you gotta keep in mind,

a lot of my childhood was
spent in boarding schools.

Any particular reason?

Oh, it's just something

She didn't tell me much.

Well, if she's spreading idle
gossip about the vineyard,
