here in the north, you have to be able to hunt, to trap, to fish.

you can eat, you can do everything if you have the skills.

And being on the land is tradition.

Living off grid, you have to find ways

to make your life easier all the time.

This is like I'm making moonshine.

[laughs]

[Matty] Just to live in a place where I can walk out my front door

and just build a bed, that brings me great, great happiness.

[Margot] This is the life I want.

When in doubt, more chainsaw.

[drill whirring]

Nothing is easy in this world. Oh!

It's not breaking and entering if it's your own house.

Do you think this is going to be a really nice home?

[kids] Yeah.

Really is a dream come true. I always wanted this.

[Matty] Newfoundland's island is in the North Atlantic.

This place gets beaten by wind and snow, especially this time of year.

Nothing better than being up at the cabin for a proper snow storm.

Just getting snowed in and it is wonderful.

When a big storm hits,

sometimes the best thing to do is just stay inside.

In this case, we'll stay inside and just get to work.

Come, Ron. [smacks lips]

This is really the day I've been looking forward to.

All that work of finishing that addition, getting that all closed in,

now it's finally time to blow a hole in the existing wall

and be able to access all that new space, which is really exciting.

Gotta get all this clutter out of here.

This place looks like my grandmother's house.

All this shit. I never use any of this.

Couple of metal wine glasses, never been used once.

Even all the way up here, you still acquire lots of clutter.

Get this ugly old thing out of here.

Right now, the new addition is completely cut off.

The only way in is through his window.

I really don't want to crack one of these old girls.

This window's getting reused for the new addition.

You're not throwing stuff away up here.

So much easier to reuse up here than it is to bring in new stuff.

[sighs] No hardware store around here.

I'm ready to pop the window out.

to walk from the old cabin into the new addition.

This is a part you don't want to mess up, cutting a hole in your cabin.

Once you cut it, ain't no going back.

It's been a lot of work, but it's starting to pay off.

[Margot] This is the first full winter that I'm trapping on my own.

I have to just be careful.

I know that things can go wrong and I'm not invincible.

Of course, like you have to be aware of wildlife, you're not alone.

You can be a predator, but you can also be prey.

You have to know that you're just part of the chain.

It's very humbling.

This wolf was hanging around my camp.

It was really interested in us, in Cade and I.

I saw his tracks and two of the friends he was with

following everywhere we would go.

Getting closer and closer every day.

[tense music playing]

One day, he came really close.

He just kept walking towards me, so I had to shoot it.

It's a nice wolf, so I'm going to take care of the pelt for sure.

He's probably around 80, 90 pounds.

It's a big wolf.

[soft music playing]

[sighs]

This wolf right now is frozen solid.

So, I'm just going to put it in the cache so it's safe from mice

and stuff that would chew it.

And I'm going to take it down in a couple days

and thaw it and skin it in the cabin.

Now that I have the wolf in the cache, I'm going to go out in the bush,

keep opening a trail and check some snares.

It's a trapping day.

[tense music playing]

I like to go trapping on skis

because it's a little faster than snowshoes.

There's about four and a half feet of snow.

So, it makes it a little more difficult to travel around here.

It's a hard workout for sure.

[rhythmic music playing]

A trap line like this consists of having different trails

to trap different species.

I'm going to go check my marten traps and set some more.

That's pretty fresh marten tracks, and they're all over here,

so I think it's a good spot to set up a set here.

Trapping allows me to be self-sufficient.

It's very rewarding.

I'm gonna wire some bait on my cone, set up the trap.

All my stuff is rotten and stinky and greasy,

so I'm wearing my bait gloves.

This is beaver, so it's not the worst.

Beaver doesn't smell too, too bad, but it's still pretty rotten, so...

My bait is wired inside the cone.

So, when they climb up the tree and they look inside,

they can see the bait.

It's why there is a cross,

so my trap is set on the cross and the cone is above it.

So, no birds can come and grab the bait.

There is no snow on the trap.

And it works pretty good.

[intriguing music playing]

Well, now I have my safeties, fortunately.

That's when the trigger can pop you.

Just handling these kinds of traps,

you have to be always careful to not make a mistake.

This one is so sensitive.

As soon as the safeties are off,

I have to be careful to not put my fingers in there.

It sure hurts.

Now, it's all set.

Safeties are off.

It's going to come up the tree, and as soon as it touches the trigger,

the springs are released and it closes on them.

It's a way to kill the animal right away, behind the neck, so there is no suffering.

I always had good catch with it,

so, hopefully, I'll catch something on this one.

[soft music playing]

[Emilie] Right now, we're taking a break from the construction on our new cabin.

We're coming out here to hopefully get some fresh fish.

Where we live is so far north, almost all of our fresh food

comes from hunting or fishing,

and in the winter, that can be challenging.

- [Gilbert] I'm gonna put some holes here. - [Emilie] Okay.

All the way up to that leaning tree.

[Emilie] It's not an option to fail.

You really can't survive on just dry goods or canned food.

If you want to make a life here,

you need to be able to harvest food from the land.

We're on a river and we're pretty close to the cabin,

so this is like a good spot when we need something right away.

We usually come here by boat.

I've never fished here on the ice, though, this is going to be a first.

[drill whirring]

[rhythmic music playing]

[Emilie] Oh, yeah!

He'll probably make close to 10 holes.

He just loves it.

[drill whirring]

[Gilbert] This is the old school ice fishing rod.

You can pull up like a 50 pounder with this stick and a line.

Simple and it works.

Now, I just need a little secret weapon.

Secret weapon is bacon.

Fish have noses.

Sometimes, they smell before they bite.

[soft music playing]

It's very relaxing when you go fishing, it's a nice reset.

It feels good to be out on the land and breathing in this fresh air.

I enjoy it.

So, now, we wait.

[throat song playing]

Sometimes, you'll get fish after fish.

Other times, you just get nothing at all.

Nikik, you're scaring the fish away.

Why is nothing biting?

[Gilbert] Maybe we're too early, but maybe two more weeks,

there'll be more fish for this type of fishing.

It would be nice even if we get one; at least,

you know, we're not leaving empty-handed.

Maybe I'll try bacon.

[soft music playing]

[Billy] Since I left the cabin ten years ago,

the place has been abandoned.

So, the last month, I've been working mostly around the cabin.

For instance, the chimney, the woodshed, the bridge.

But now I just want to make it more homey, comfortable,

to make this a place I want to be.

Living off grid, you have to find ways

to make your life easier all the time.

Yes, sometimes, it's hard.

For instance, my cabin is a dry cabin, no running water.

I've got to get to the river to get my water

and to warm it up on the woodstove.

So, I would like to have a hot water system

using the heat coming from the woodstove.

So, this is my goal.

The main component of the water system, to make it hot, it's copper pipe.

Gonna use the log inside the chimney piece...

to roll the copper pipe around this pipe.

Oh, this is exciting.

[grunting]

Yeah. Shit.

I don't like it.

It's no good when it's pinchy like this.

The goal here is to get water through it.

It needs to be wide, flat, round, without any pinches here.

[tense music playing]

Right now, you know, just trying to figure out a different way to do it.

This is exactly what I had in mind.

But is it working as a water system?

it doesn't exist anymore, this kind of pipe.

It's oval, it's not round,

compared to the new pipe, it's brand new, it's round.

So, I really needed to get it crimped a little bit more.

In order to fit it.

It's so stiff.

[grunting]

That's the thing, you know, using old stove,

to make modern material fit, you've got to improvise.

And a lot of muscle.

[grunting] Almost!

[Margot] For me, the bush is just this very primal experience

where you are back to the very basics.

[Emilie] Here, your priority is your basic needs.

Putting a roof over your head.

Heating your home.

Having food on the table.

And everything else kind of comes afterwards.

[Matty] This is where I'm comfortable, this is what I like.

Just trying to survive.

Trying to survive is much more fulfilling than just being.

[upbeat music playing]

How you making out, Ron, you all right over here?

He's excited for his new space.

Two-bedroom house, one for you, one for me.

If you want to live up in a cabin like this year-round, winter time,

you need good insulation.

Without insulation up here, it would just be a bunch of cold wooden walls.

This is the first stud for the partition wall,

to separate the two bedrooms.

Over here, this will be the main bedroom, where I'll sleep.

And over here we'll put a couple bunk beds.

Feels like a real house.

When I look back into the old cabin, wow, look how far away the door is now.

So much space.

[soft music playing]

We're working on pine, which is a pretty big deal.

Great thing about pine is you don't need to paint it or stain it,

you just put it up and just that raw wood look, I really love it.

Oh, yeah. Looks good.

The only thing that could make this bedroom any better is a bed.

Last thing I want to do is have to go to town

and try and drag a bed up over this trail.

Much easier and much more enjoyable

just to whip up a nice little bush log bed.

I need one, one decent sized log

that I can get maybe 10, 12 feet out of.

It's time to make furniture.

[chainsaw buzzing]

It means a lot to me, this place.

I've been coming up to these woods, this lake, since I was nine years old.

So, I feel very, very much like a young boy again,

coming back here and going through the same woods.

It's a very good feeling.

Building in the bush like this,

just a whole different type of freedom.

As long as it works, no one cares.

And there's no one here to see it.

All right, little girl, ready to sing?

You can make a masterpiece, or you can literally duct tape it together.

If you can dream it up and you're willing to do the work, you can build it.

I really want to lay it out and see how it looks.

Just so I can visualize it.

It's actually looking good, boy.

Putting these posts up and these beams in place

really feels like a bed to me now.

It's gonna be beautiful.

I'm not sure what is about it,

but as soon as I take a log or tree and peel the bark off,

having this nice, smooth fresh log underneath,

it just looks so damn good.

It's not supposed to be perfect.

Their real beauty comes from their imperfections.

Little bit of a bow in the centre, but,

I mean, you won't notice that when you're sleeping.

[chuckles]

Yeah, I'm not, I'm not going to keep fishing here.

There's really no point.

Hopefully, closer to the evening, we'll get fish.

So, I think for now we're going to try a little bit

of target shooting practice.

When I was 12, I learned how to use a rifle,

but it's been a long time.

I officially got my gun license, so now, I can carry a gun around.

And that's going to be really important for my family,

because I can carry a gun to protect us.

Because out here, you never know what's going to come.

Could be bears.

Wolves.

Which is definitely a reality up here.

[soft country music playing]

The more I practice, the better I'll be, for when the situation does come.

For Emilie, it's been a while, so she's just going to have to practice.

Sometimes, I'm a little competitive, so I'm looking forward to trying it out,

and I'm sure it'll come back.

But, you know, I feel very confident knowing that I still got it.

Gilbert did pretty well on his own, too.

I mean, I've never doubted him, he's a very sharp shooter.

I think it's good, we make a really good team.

[Gilbert] Now, we fish.

[Emilie] Ever since being here, it's really changed my view on hunting.

You know, I didn't really understand it when I used to live in the city,

but it's really a part of life here.

We can't get food up from down south as easily.

You only take what you need.

Fishing. Hunting.

It's a really important teaching in the Cree culture and in the community.

We just take what our family needs

and everything of the animal gets used.

We don't waste anything.

Except for my time right here on this hole.

Oh, yeah, I got a fish!

- [Emilie] Brook trout! - [Gilbert] Brook trout.

It's about 20 inches.

That's going to feed our whole family one supper.

Yeah, it's a good meal.

Nikik, don't think about it.

[Emilie] You're running with a fish.

Whoa! That might beat the record, my record.

Mine was 24. It's still good.

Must have been there for a while, it's not even moving anymore.

[Margot] Being out here, you have to follow your gut feeling

and just your own instinct.

You feel like you're part of the land.

You're just like another animal.

I'm still pretty worried because there's those two other wolves,

and it was a weird feeling to know that they were circling

and staying that close.

Right after I shot the wolf at camp,

I followed the two other wolves' tracks the next day

and they all came here and I found their beds

just 20 yards from here.

So, I put snares and a bit of bait all over it.

[intriguing music playing]

Wolves are usually pretty scared and aware of humans,

so they don't really come close to camp.

But, right now, it's the mating season, so it's mostly a danger for dogs.

Cade, let's go. Come on, boy.

If a male smells another male and thinks it's a competitor,

he's going to come and try to get rid of him.

So, I'm trying to catch them before they catch Cade.

[soft music playing]

You can't just put a bunch of snares in the middle of the trail

hoping they'll just go through it.

You have to find the proper spot.

It has to be somewhere where it's pretty dense,

so it's somewhere where he has to go through this specific path.

Wolves are so smart, so you have to be smarter than them.

That's where I found their beds.

There are three beds right here.

It's covered by the snow now, but they were sleeping here.

So, that's where I dropped the bait.

Something has been eating it, it was a big pile

and there's, this fish has been dragged,

there was a couple of big fish like this.

Someone is having a feast.

But no, no wolf track so far.

[upbeat music playing]

Okay, that's good enough.

One tank will be here.

So, the water will float when I open the tap,

will go all the way here.

The cold water will just warm up.

It will go up by thermosiphon, all the way up.

And that will get inside here.

And it will go like a whole circle.

Same water all the time.

So, one hole here and one hole on the top.

This is an old water cooler I've had for years,

and now, I'm just going to use it for my water system.

It's cool, you know, it's good recycling.

I'm still learning a lot because living in the woods,

I'm learning every day.

Everything you do for the first time, it's hard.

But when you don't give up, if you push your limit

and you have the will to learn, it opens a new world.

And this is why I love it.

Here we go.

And I have to do some soldering here and here,

to make sure there is no leaks.

I have no clue why it's not working.

You can hear better, you can see better, you can smell better.

And you can feel everything.

[Emilie] You start noticing the different kinds of trees,

the wind, the weather, the sun, the animals,

things that are living around you.

[Billy] I feel that my life is so deeply connected to nature.

You've got to be grounded.

It's essential.

This is just to catch the, that beam.

A chisel is probably one of the more satisfying tools.

It's very peaceful.

I think that'll do.

Just to live in a place where I can walk out my front door

and just build a bed, it brings me great, great happiness.

The big thing is, though, with this bed, all green wood.

So, I'm building all this all nice and tight now,

but as it dries out in a nice warm cabin over the next couple of months,

it's all going to shrink a lot.

Classic case of shrinkage, just comes with the territory, living in a cold place.

This is where the glue comes in.

Oh, that's a solid bed.

Oh, Jesus! It's heavier than a piece of lumber.

Oh, God, I'm going to have so many good sleeps in this thing.

Got a real bedroom now.

Really is a dream come true. I always wanted this.

Just a pile of logs, that's all this was.

Still got the old chainsaw shavings on her.

Holy shit.

So much more space.

That's the guest room.

Right now, it's watertight.

Insulated. I mean, that's all I really care about.

It was so much work, but now, it's almost time to kick back and just enjoy it.

This life definitely isn't for everyone.

But, at the end of the day, it's a very simple and very fulfilling life.

Nice new bed.

Legally, you have to check your traps every couple days

and reset them if you need to.

It doesn't matter if the weather is shitty, if it's a storm,

or if it's minus 50.

If you have traps out, you have to go and check it.

That's a nice marten.

It's a really nice colour.

And it's a good strike right on the neck.

It's, it's good.

This area is pretty good so far, got a couple catch on this trail.

I'm going to bring it back, just keep it for myself.

I can use the fur to make an insert for my big mitts,

or even for trimming on a coat or on a hat.

It's a nice fur, it's pretty warm, so, it will be useful for sure.

It's not frozen at all, actually.

It's pretty fresh, must have happened today.

Sometimes people think like trappers just want to kill animals

and doesn't give a shit about lives.

Yeah, you have to kill animals to be here.

[soft music playing]

But it's not just because we want to kill, kill, kill.

We appreciate that lifestyle.

I've been thawing this wolf for a little more than three days now.

It was completely frozen, it takes a while.

Yeah, I love skinning animals, actually.

It sounds weird, but it's kind of a meditation for me.

And also thanking the animal and taking care of the pelt.

You want to do a good job, first of all, for the respect of the animal

because you, you took his life.

So, you have to take great care.

And then you have to do a good job until the end.

It's a long process.

Four or five hours of work.

You got to be careful to not cut yourself.

I'm going to keep it for now, as a full pelt.

If you want to live this lifestyle here in the north,

you have to be able to hunt, to trap, to fish.

You can make your own clothes, you can eat,

you can do everything if you have the skills.

That's the life I want.

[soft music playing]

[Billy] I have no clue why soldering doesn't stick well.

Everything is so cold, like crazy cold.

Maybe if I warm up the copper pipe, the solder will hold better.

I need to warm it up a little bit more.

It's working great.

It's not the nicest looking, but it's working.

People think living in the nature, it's suffering.

But, for me, it's not.

With time and knowledge and experience,

you learn how to live and have an easier life in the woods.

I don't know if it's gonna work, though.

Feeling, again, a bit, you know, worried but now it's the test time.

Whew! Very stressful.

I'm just gonna turn on the tap.

Cold water will float all the way here.

And of course, I need another one. [chuckles]

The other water hose, at the other end,

it will just go up and back into the tank.

All the heat is coming from this woodstove.

This is the plan.

Moment of truth.

Yeah, it's working.

It's going up. It's going up.

And it's warm, very warm.

There is some leaks here.

Little, small, tiny leaks that I can deal with later.

I wanted hot water, I'm going to get hot water.

[chuckles]

It's going up so fast!

That's a lot of power.

It's working great.

This is now actually a hot water system.

No more cold water.

No more cold feet.

This is the end result.

I have hot water on tap.

I'm so happy.

Five gallons ready to go, to wash the dishes,

you know, wash my hands, my face.

And I'm good at least for two days, I will say.

It's a great improvement to my homestead.

Making your life easier in the woods is not a bad thing.

It's a goal.

That is part of my culture.

And then I'm going to share it with Mikael and Brooke and Annie.

They're going to see how it's done.

It's very important for my children to learn the old ways and use the land.

Tradition is an extremely important thing.

And being on the land is tradition.

They're kids, you know, for now, they might somewhat be interested,

and that's okay, as long as they kind of see us doing it

and they're seeing how it's made.

And once you put the spruce branches down,

it'll be really nice and cozy and it'll smell like Christmas.

I'm embracing my French culture and Gilbert's Cree culture,

and we're blending it together for our kids.

We call them the French Cree.

I want to make it cozy for the kids.

It's warmer this way.

- Can't even feel the cold. - Yeah.

[Emilie] This doesn't gross me out. Hey, Nikik.

Being a nurse, like I did the OR a little bit, the operating room.

I saw a lot.

I think this is good, but we have to clean it first, though.

That yellow snow?

[chuckles] No.

[Emilie] If we were closer to the river, we'd just be using river water.

When you're out here and it's the winter,

just use what you have, which is snow, and it does a really good job.

It's always exciting when we get fresh brook trout.

We cook everything, even the head.

That's Gilbert's favourite part.

The cheeks, yeah, it's really tender.

Even the eyeballs, he eats.

This is just the tail, and it gets really crispy.

Eat it like a chip.

Gilbert and Annie fight over it.

It's so good, isn't it?

Meal time for our family, whether it's at a table

or whether it's outside in a tepee,

it's always my favourite part of the day

because we get to sit down, eat food, and talk.
