with an "MTV News" brief.

Rap star Dr. Dre is scheduled
to turn himself in

to Los Angeles police
on Friday afternoon

to start serving
a five-month jail sentence

for a 1994 drunken driving
conviction.

First night in jail was crazy

'cause I remember this guy

that was just, like,
yelling all night.

He was like, you know,
"F you, God!

You're pissing on me!"

This is gonna be
an interesting five months.

I had a lot of time
to just sit in there and think

about, you know, what I wanted
to do in the future,

and, you know,
things I wanted to accomplish.

It actually was a blessing
in disguise

because I was on the road
for failure, man.

Just the fast life,
just the partyin',

and you know,
spending a lot of money

that I didn't really need
to be spending.

I was wilin' out.

Dre's personal life at that time
was in spirals,

just going in all kind
of different directions.

that was falling apart.

What I'm doing
right now is, um,

I'll be putting out
a solo album soon.

You know, we were off and on,
but still a couple.

At the time,
I was getting beat,

but it wasn't--
you know, it was normal.

But we had those kind of times,

and then, for whatever reason,
he just got that way.

And it became too much to take.
We broke up.

To be perfectly blunt,
I just did

a lot of stupid,
stupid things.

And, um, I think it takes age
and experience to realize that.

It's not the same Dr. Dre
out at the clubs,

wilin', tearing up things.

I value my career a lot more,
you know.

Only thing I wanna do now
is come to the studio,

make my records,
work, boogie,

have fun up here with the people
that are here, and go home.

I decided I was gonna start
on an album,

"California Love."

It was my song
and it was a complete song.

You know, everybody felt like,
"Yo, Tupac is--

"you know,
he's fresh out of jail.

"This would be a good song
for him to do

for his first single."

So I took my second verse off,

put him on,
and he did some ad-libs

at the end of the song.

We went out and did a video.

for the video.

I was like, "That is the bomb.
I'll be there."

He said, "It's gonna take
three days."

I was like, "Wait."

He's like, "It's in the dirt."

I was like, "Hold it."

Suge like givin' a nigga
a little extra.

It definitely changed for Tupac,
you know,

from "Dear Mama" to, you know,
"California Love."

It's like,

He gettin' all this love.

When he finally got
in the studio,

he's like,
"Damn, I'm finally here.

I got Dr. Dre on the boards
and I'm in the booth."

The music that he needed
met his lyrics,

which created "All Eyez on Me."

I'd been in jail
for 11 1/2 months.

I wasn't about to come out
and censor

the thoughts
that were in my head.

They were, like, building
on top of each other.

The title was one
of the best titles in the world

to fit him, "All Eyez on Me,"
because at the time--

at this time,
I think it's this guy's moment.

Anything he do is perfect.

"All Eyez on Me."
"All Eyez on Me."

On top of the excitement,
he brought a work ethic

that we had never seen before.

Okay, well,
this what I'm gonna do.

I'ma try and do it one
more time, clear as possible.

We would stay in the studio
for a whole day

and make one record.

Pac came in there, man,
and was knockin' down

five records a day.

Every day.
Including Sunday.

So we in there goin' for it,

"That's what I'm talking about!

He added that fire.

And then we see
what it sound like.

If not,
everybody lose they job.

Pac only wanted to work.

His main concern
was studio, studio, studio.

That's the only thing
he wanted to do at that time.

He could knock down songs
faster than anybody.

Pre-Death Row,
Pac would try

to appeal to both sides,
Bloods and Crips.

When he went to Death Row,
he was strictly representin'

Mob, M-O-B, Bloods,
right, Piru.

But that was in conflict
with his "Thug Life" message.

"Thug Life" was designed to try
to organize the inner city.

Suge never did that.

He unified the gang members
that worked with him,

but he never really was like,
"Hey, guys, stop bangin'."

So you got a guy looking
to find direction,

looking for something
to be down with.

Tupac saw Suge, a Blood,
as a father figure.

He finally found
that direction.

Suge saved his life,
bailed him out of prison

when it seemed like everyone
turned they backs on him.

That's why we doin' that shit

And as the East Coast-West Coast
beef escalated,

who escalated it?

reports this week

on what it says
is a growing feud

between East Coast rap mogul
Puffy Combs

and West Coast titan
Suge Knight.

The problems started
magnifying more.

Suge lost a friend in Atlanta
that was murdered.

You know, Jake was a good guy,
and they were saying,

"Oh, that had something to do
with Puffy people."

A lot of people
was pissed off about that.

We outside of Death Row
and-- and-- and Bad Boys.

This is on some
total street shit now.

It was a war of words
before that,

but now, you know,
there's a body.

So, December of 1995,

Death Row throws
a Christmas party

up in the Hollywood Hills.

And an individual
named Mark Anthony Bell,

a friend of Puffy's,
attends this party,

and is accosted
and taken upstairs.

Suge Knight, Tupac Shakur
all confront him and they say,

"Listen, you know,
we're gonna beat your ass

"until you tell us where
Puffy's family house is

out here in Los Angeles."

And, um, Mark didn't want
to give that up.

And they, uh, did some...
did some things to him.

I'd heard of those incidents
happening at the time,

which was letting it be known
that, you know,

this is real beef
goin' on here.

The East Coast,
they never really
gave us respect as artists.

We always had an issue
with that.

A lot of people think Tupac
started this whole persona

of the East and the West
against each other,

but it was really
"New York, New York"
that set that off.

It was a big joke

about steppin' on the buildings
in New York.

They took that literal.

and Biggie said to me,
"I guess you're okay

with these guys
shootin' a video in Brooklyn."

I said, "Well, I didn't--
I didn't know about it."

So Big said, "Yeah, you know,
you should let everybody know

on the radio that
that video's happening."

I should've thought it through,

and I did go on the radio
that night and say

what borough they were shooting
a video in,

and I said the cross streets.

You know, I'd have never
given out that information

if I knew somebody was gonna
go over there and do something

that they shouldn't do.

We got shot at.

All we knew was to retaliate
on the entire city.

that's really what got

this whole craze
about the East and the West.

to protect himself

of Puffy,

"I can handle this.

"I got a crew out there,
these South Side Crips.

"I've been dealing dope
with them for years,

and their main guy, Keffe D,
is my boy."

Puffy needed somebody
that can deal with the Mob,

with the Bloods and Suge.

and South Sides

because Death Row and Bad Boy,

and the little homies

We had a disagreement,

Dre wanted to make music.

He didn't agree with the beefs
from Death Row.

He didn't want to be a part of
the East Coast-West Coast thing.

All this East Coast-West Coast
nonsense

is just getting ridiculous,

It's just like another form
of Black-on-Black crime.

Dre was cool with everybody,
so for him to be

in an environment
that was so tense,

this isn't working anymore.

The relationship
was obviously over.

Suge really wanted to end it
and so did Dre.

Jimmy turned and he had
to choose Suge or Dre,

and he chose Dre.

Dre was
the more tamable person.

Suge wasn't tamable.

Went and met with Jimmy and I
remember discussing and saying,

"Well, this is gonna be
a really hard thing to do."

Are we gonna pay Death Row

to have an artist
that we already have?

Because he's on Death Row
and we have Death Row.

And then Jimmy surprised me.
He said,

"Dre doesn't want anything."
I go, "What?"

As far as Dr. Dre goes,

been there, done that,
through with it.

If he chooses to go on,
move forward,

and do his own thing,
for me,

I'm not trying to be
an asshole about it,

but that couldn't be
a better position for me.

I mean, Death Row is
a multimillion-dollar company

that have a catalog
of hits on top of hits,

and I still own
all the masters.

Dre took those masters with him,

and Suge was really pissed off.

And that became another one
of those urban legends

that Suge Knight was known for.

$3 million Interscope money

to have Death Row agree
to release Dre.

As an owner, he would be owed,
