Oh anyway, she's rushing up to this bar

she usually goes to and she orders herself

a nice cold Corona.

She takes her Corona,

and she goes to sit in her normal seat.

Oh shit it was raining, right!

(rain splattering)
So, she's at this bar

on this rainy afternoon,

and she's trying to
sit at her usual table.

Somebody's already sitting there.

Ah no, wait, it was two guys,

and a chick.

Now, it's kind of a shitty bar,

and there's lots of other places to sit,

but here's this tour guide who's wondering

who might have stumbled on
her make-shift watering hole.

So she sits at the next table,
she starts eavesdropping.

Helena, that's her name.

So there sits Helena,
listening in on what seems like

run of the mill small talk, not realizing

what she's about to witness.

You see, this young couple
seemed suspiciously interested

in what this washed up high
school teacher had to say.

Didn't seem like they
knew each other too well,

but for some reason he seemed to take

a liking in the little scamps.

So he leans over and he says,

"So you want to know about
Francesco something or other?"

Oh I don't know, I forget his name.

- Francesco Rodriguez.
- That's right.

Francesco Rodriguez.

Now, to the average Joe,
that isn't intriguing.

But Helena,

(crackling)
being the history infatuated

tour guide that she is, knows that he's

talking about Francesco
Rodriguez Figueroa,

son of Rodrigo Figueroa,
famous Spanish seafarer,

(timbers creaking)
and husband to the

Italian beauty Angela Figueroa.

But why the fuck is any of this relevant?

Well it turns out, in the mid-17th century

Francesco's father, Rodrigo, was charged

by a wealthy Spanish nobleman
to send a substantial dowry

(seagulls cawing)
from Spain across the

(waves crashing)
Mediterranean to Rome.

Now, being in high demand,

Rodrigo didn't see much of his son.

But this journey was different.

You see, Francesco had just come of age,

and after days of pestering his father,

Rodrigo decided to bring him along.

So off they sailed on

(crackling)
the Espadrillo.

Now this is where the story
takes a bit of a turn.

Because you see the Espadrillo

never actually arrived in Rome.

- So where is it?
- Well the shipwreck

was found many years later, right here

by a promontory in southern Sardinia.

Yeah but what about the dowry?

When the wreckage was found there was

no sign of the dowry, and unfortunately,

all the crew were found
dead, save for one.

Francesco Rodriguez Figueroa.

[Both] Francesco Rodriguez Figueroa!

- Figueroa.

- So, it's a treasure hunt.

Well no not exactly, you
see there were no clues.

The only bread crumb Francesco left behind

was the message on the
inside of the Espadrillo.

Carved into the bulkhead
of the ship Francesco wrote

(speaking foreign language).

Now, isn't that an interesting story?

remember Francesco's name?

that found the wreck,

was the Poseidon Marine Exploration,

and they brought the loot
back under the jurisdiction

of the US federal court.

So they could keep it.

Exactly.

But the Portuguese
government filed a claim

that the site of the find was in

Portuguese territorial waters.

Which would force the Poseidon Marine

to return the treasure.

- I think the coast is clear.

So, what happened?

Unfortunately nothing yet.

At first it looked like there was a case

when a witness came forth,

but, that witness
mysteriously disappeared.

Aside from the fact that
Rick's less treasure hunter

and more hired gun, why

not to mention the faith

time in the mid-18th century,

almost 100 years after it last set sail.

Although no cargo was found aboard,

they did find a manifest,
and concluded that

there must have been a survivor.

During the advent of
mass tourism to a bay

with better access.

Either the shipwreck was never here,

on his first voyage across the
Mediterranean with is father.

It was written completely in Italian,

and handed over to the
Fitchburg Museum in the 1960s

by a young Bostonian high school student.

[Helena] That's why no
one's connected the dots.

What, because it was in Italian?

Well the student found the diary

in his late grandfather's basement,

probably handed it over to
create some kind of legacy.

[Helena] You see Francesco and everybody

aboard the ship was Spanish.

So that's why an Italian
diary didn't raise any flags.

The diary has to have made its way to

New England in the mass
immigration in 1870.

That journey, that history
of Italian Americans

in New England is enough for any museum

to display something.

So that's why nobody ever
thought to take a closer look.

Exactly.

So what do you say Helena?

Is this enough credible
information for you?

It is, it is!

with every crash I fear it
will drag us down to the depths

of the ocean, and my heart along with it.

Something must be done,
but I fear tomorrow

might be too late.
