Original subtitles

I've seen Lucas, and I can't.

-Honey… -Don't hug me. This is all your fault.

Didn't you know how to use a condom? You've ruined my life.

PREVIOUSLY

Trini, do you like my father?

What? That's silly, Paloma.

-Does he know? -[Trini] No, no, no.

I never had the courage. Perhaps I'll find it someday.

[Gracia] To thank you for helping me realize

that I must let go of the past, because I'm not who I was.

There is nothing that prevents us from being together.

[Emilio] It's not just about Gracia. It's about your mother, too.

-If it hadn't been for me… -[Paloma] What?

She wouldn't have had the accident?

[chuckles softly]

I kicked her out.

Imagine if you hadn't. Do you think she would have stayed?

Neither you nor Laura.

I can't forget you.

I will never forget you.

Excuse me.

Mom?

[♪ theme music playing]

RETURN TO LAS SABINAS

[♪ theme music concludes]

-[birds chirping] -[wind blowing]

[♪ reflective instrumental music playing]

[Gracia exhales]

[huffs]

But… But is it really you?

I used to say that our hands looked exactly the same, but…

I was wrong.

Yours are prettier.

But how is it possible?

What… [hesitates]

Where have you been all this time?

[sighs]

I've come to Las Sabinas because it was my only reference.

But I didn't know whether you would have sold the house,

left Manterana…

Paloma and I left, but we came back a few months ago.

And your father?

Dad still lives here. We live with him.

And my two children.

[gasps]

Am I a grandma?

You are.

Two kids, Lucas and Julia.

[laughs]

They must be as beautiful as their mom.

As their grandma.

You must have a million things to tell me.

I do. To tell all of you.

I'll call… Hold on…

[laughs] Paloma is not going to believe this.

Ah, Paloma…

[grunts] It's switched off.

Are you okay?

Yes.

[Gracia] Sure?

Yes. It's just that I hoped to find you here.

But coming back home,

seeing you, knowing that you are all in Manterana…

[♪ mysterious instrumental music playing]

-I just can't believe it. -[laughs] My love.

Tell your father and your sister

that I'm dying to see them.

But why? Aren't you coming in?

No, not right now. I'm tired. I'll come back tomorrow.

Then, type your number here.

I'll call you now so that you'll get mine.

Where will you go now? Where…?

San Luis. To the hotel.

A hotel there.

-Can't you stay for a while? -No.

Tomorrow. I'll be here tomorrow.

-My beautiful girl. -[laughs]

[Laura] You already were when you were little, my love.

But you've become such a beautiful woman.

On the inside and the outside.

-My love. My life. -[laughs]

-[♪ music concludes] -[Paloma and Richi laugh]

-Shush, you'll wake them up. -No. I'm a ninja.

[coat stand squeaks]

[laughs]

Hey. If we go to bed now, I'm sure we still have,

like, 30 minutes left before the alarm clock rings.

[huffs] I won't go to bed, then. No way.

[sighs] What a day it'll be.

[laughs] Yeah.

-[Richi] Working after an all-nighter. -[huffs]

[both sigh]

-Ow… -[chuckles softly]

[laughs]

It was worth it.

Yes. I agree.

[laughs] I had so much fun.

-We have to go back to that bar. -[laughs] Yeah. Which one?

We've been to, like, five, right? [laughs]

-[laughs] My friend's, the karaoke bar. -[laughs] No.

Yes. I don't think I gave it my all during our performance.

Sure. They just had to rip the mic

-out of your hand. [laughs] -[Richi laughing]

So embarrassing…

-I'll never go back there. -Yes, you will. Come on.

-Paloma, we owe it to our fans. -Right. [laughs]

[sighs]

It was just what I needed after what happened with my dad.

-[♪ gentle instrumental music playing] -You know what?

Óscar loved that bar.

Really?

[chuckles softly]

Wherever he is, I'm sure he's happy that we've been there.

[chuckles softly]

If he were here now,

I'm sure he would encourage me.

To do what?

[laughs]

-[footsteps approaching] -[Gracia] Good morning.

Good morning.

-Did we wake you up? -No. I haven't slept at all.

I've been calling you since yesterday afternoon.

Right, yeah. I…

I forgot to switch on my phone after the movie and…

-Everything okay? Is Dad all right? -Everybody is fine. Everybody is fine.

-Good. -It's just that…

I have something to tell you.

Okay, okay.

I'm leaving. I'll take a shower, and off to work.

-See you later. -Bye.

[exhales]

It's Mom.

What about Mom?

What is it, Gracia?

She's back.

I don't understand. What do you mean?

She was here yesterday. I was talking to her yesterday.

[♪ emotional instrumental music playing]

Gracia, are you okay?

[Gracia] She's alive, Paloma.

Mom is alive.

[♪ music concludes]

[birds chirping]

[cicadas chittering]

[cup clinking]

Are you in a hurry?

Yes. I want to pick up Lucas and Gracia.

We are testifying in court today in the kidnapping case.

Oh. Of course. I had forgotten about that.

Hopefully, we'll be done with it, and Lucas will be able to move on.

I'm going to my room.

No school today?

I have nothing first period.

I'll go finish some homework.

[exhales]

I'll get going. I have to finish off the day laborers' budgets.

Bye, Paca.

A son binds you forever.

But that doesn't mean that Gracia and Miguel

will be together more than they are now,

which is not too often.

I know. I don't mind that he spends time with his son.

On the contrary.

But I can't help feeling this in my stomach every time.

I know he'll be with her.

Gracia really made me suffer.

That woman is the past.

Miguel is sure that you are his future.

-[♪ reflective instrumental music playing] -[Paca] You'll have a child, soon.

And then, he will be devoted to his real family. You'll see.

-Gracia, honey, it's not her. -[♪ music fading]

-It is. -[huffs]

How do you know it's her?

How do I know it's you here, in front of me?

It's not the same thing.

You haven't seen Mom for 20 years.

-Paloma, it was her. -[chuckles softly]

And she's so beautiful.

Older, but… but exactly the same face.

-And you look so much alike. -[chuckles softly]

And why did you let her go without explaining herself?

Because she wants to explain everything to all of us. She'll be back today.

What if she disappears again?

What's the point of coming back and then disappearing again?

Besides, she gave me her number.

It's just that…

I don't understand why you let her go without explaining

why she made us believe that she was dead, Gracia.

She wasn't feeling well.

-[Paloma scoffing] -Emotions were running high.

But she said she'll be back today to explain everything.

What does Dad think?

I haven't told him yet.

He's not feeling well. He's--

Good morning, Dad.

Good morning.

How did you sleep?

[huffs]

Worse than in jail.

[Paloma] Mm.

[water pouring]

[grunts]

I'll try to get back to sleep.

[Lucas] I'm going to school.

How is it going, Lucas? Are you ready?

What for?

Were we meeting today?

Yes. We have to testify before the judge.

[Lucas] Mom, Miguel is here.

But what judge? Nobody told me I had to go to court.

Hi.

Why didn't you tell me that I had to testify?

[♪ dramatic instrumental music playing]

I'm sorry.

I'm sorry. I was going to tell you yesterday and I forgot.

-[Lucas] How could you forget that? -Sorry. I was so worried about Grandpa

that it slipped my mind.

-But we are still on time, aren't we? -Yes, if we leave right now.

-Thank goodness. -How long have you known?

Why didn't you tell me?

Miguel and I thought it was better to wait

for the date to be closer, so that you didn't get anxious.

Well, it's a good thing he's come, otherwise…

-What happens if I don't testify? -Don't think about that now.

I'll get my bag and we'll leave, okay?

Don't worry. It'll just be a couple of questions.

Everything will be fine.

[♪ music fading]

[Paca] Sweetheart.

Have you got a minute?

Yes.

How long will you treat your father like that?

I don't know. Until I get over it.

Don't worry, it's nothing to do with you.

It has something to do with me.

Firstly, because we all live together in this house.

And that makes us a family.

And secondly, because I love you both, and it hurts to see you like this.

Sit with me.

Have I ever told you about my dad?

He was a man of strong convictions. Strict, firm, he loved discipline.

In other words, a total jerk.

Jesus.

Everything had to be as he wished.

And that "everything" included me.

Your father is not like that, is he?

That'd be the last straw. [laughs]

[Paca] You should be happy, then.

No. It doesn't work that way, Paca.

[Paca] Of course not.

Because even though your father isn't a tyrant

nor an old wreck, like mine,

he's weak.

He belongs to a generation that wants to compensate

for the lack of love they had as kids by overprotecting you.

And then, what happens, happens.

You can't handle frustration.

And you become fickle and whiny.

Do you really think I'm fickle and whiny?

Of course not.

What happened with Lucas was terrible.

But why is that your father's fault? Why do you take it out on him?

I'll tell you.

Because he loves you so much

that he would be willing to take all the blame as long as you don't suffer.

And this is nobody's fault.

Well, I think it's his fault.

[Paca] I don't know who said this, probably someone very wise,

but "When terrible things happen, intelligent people look for a solution.

"Ignorant people only look for someone to blame."

I've always thought you were a very intelligent girl.

-Paca, I have to go to school. -Wait, I'm not done.

Even though you don't see it now,

you've been very lucky.

-Really? After all that's happened to me? -[Paca] Mm-hmm.

Is that what you think?

Yes.

What happened with Lucas is awful, but…

you must go on.

Right. Easy to say.

I know you can.

I've seen you do it. I know how strong you are.

What happened with that kid and the video?

-Nico. -[Paca] That one.

You thought your life was over, that you wouldn't be able to go to school.

-But you were brave and got over it. -[♪ reflective instrumental music playing]

But this is way worse.

Because you think you've lost the love of your life,

but you haven't.

What do you know about that?

I know because I lost mine. The love of my life died.

Death, Lucía.

That's the only thing that can't be fixed.

The sooner you learn that,

the better.

That way, you'll be able to recover and be ready.

Because life doesn't just hit you once, it hits you many times.

And, sometimes, it hits really hard.

[♪ music fading]

I don't know if I did the right thing sending him to school.

He was very agitated.

I'm sure going back to his routine will help him.

It was clear for the judge, right?

Yeah. He didn't ask us much.

Álvarez's lawyer, on the other hand… [huffs]

He tried to make him nervous.

He thought he would freeze, but he did fine.

[Gracia] Mm.

And he didn't even have time to prepare.

He's a very smart and strong boy.

I knew he could handle it.

You "knew." But how could you forget?

Stop thinking about that.

-What's important is that it was fine. -No thanks to you, that's for sure.

You could have called me to remind me.

[Miguel] I offered to tell him.

And you said that you'd do it when you deemed fit.

I've never gone around you before when it comes to Lucas.

But maybe I should.

Because I can see he's not your priority.

-[♪ tense instrumental music playing] -I've been a full-time mom

for 17 years.

[Miguel] Because you wanted to.

You may find it difficult to imagine, but I have a life, too.

And many open fronts to deal with besides my children.

So you couldn't spare five minutes for Lucas,

but you could spend the whole afternoon with Tano?

Seriously, Miguel?

Is this about that? Really?

-[scoffs] -[♪ music intensifies, fades]

I'm finished.

Okay.

Are you going to follow me to the bathroom too?

I've never felt so controlled, not even at the Civil Guard station.

Ha! You can go back there, then. What are you waiting for?

-Come on, don't be silly. -[Trini grunting]

You better get used to it,

because I'll be watching you until you're fully recovered, okay?

You won't fool me with the food again as you did yesterday.

-Did my daughter tell you? -Of course.

Aren't you ashamed of yourself?

Hiding food like a child? Were you going to say the meat was chewy?

I wouldn't behave like a kid if you didn't treat me like one.

So? Happy?

Shall I open my mouth so you can check there's nothing in there?

[babbles]

-What would you like for dessert? -Nothing. I'm full.

No way. At least have some fruit.

[huffs] Okay, all right.

A bad diet won't fix my problems either.

[chuckles softly]

How many times have I said that? But you never listen.

Thank goodness Wilson is coming for a few hours. He works wonders.

I thought you didn't like him.

I won't lie.

I didn't like him at first, I didn't like how he treated you.

But I can see now that he worries about you, and that's all I care about.

He's not the only one.

Thank you, Trini.

[sighs] I know I'm constantly complaining and moaning,

and I never thank you.

But you are very important to me.

You are very important to me too.

More than you think.

Do you know that it's been a long time

since I felt something like this?

[♪ gentle instrumental music playing]

I didn't know that… you felt…

Well, that you saw me that way.

And what do you think?

I don't know what to say.

For example, you could say how you feel about me.

[rattling]

Coffee's ready.

[cutlery clinking]

[♪ music concludes]

[exhales] I still can't believe this is happening.

[laughs] I'm not surprised.

If I hadn't seen her with my own eyes, I wouldn't believe it either.

It's probably not her, Gracia.

Maybe it's someone who looks like her

-and is… -[Gracia] Who would do that?

Paloma, it was her.

I recognized her as soon as I saw her.

And she said something Mom always used to say to me,

that our hands were beautiful.

Hold on a second.

Are you sure it wasn't a dream?

You've been through a lot--

Did I dream about the text message too? You've seen it.

Yes.

-Then, she should be already here. -It's not time yet.

Stop, you're making me nervous. Sit down.

[Paloma exhaling]

I was going to say that I've been waiting for this moment my whole life, but no.

It's not true. I couldn't even dream about it, because Mom was dead.

Now, I don't… I don't know.

[♪ mysterious instrumental music playing]

-It's her. -It's okay.

[Laura] Honey.

-[Gracia laughing] -Paloma.

But…

[pants] But…

It's okay. I'm here.

It's… But… I don't know if…

We buried you. We went to your funeral. It can't…

It wasn't me in that coffin.

I faked my own death, honey.

What?

No…

-[laughs] -No… I can't.

No, I don't want to.

It's just… No. I can't. I can't.

-I can't. -[Gracia] But…

Paloma!

[♪ music concludes]

[♪ reflective instrumental music playing]

-[♪ music fading] -[birds chirping]

Hey.

-Are you okay? -[exhales]

How can I be okay?

Why did you leave?

Because I can't bear it.

I see.

It hasn't been easy for Mom either.

She's gone. I don't think she's okay.

Are you really going to worry about her?

But what's the matter? I don't understand.

What don't you understand, Gracia?

Haven't you heard her? She faked her own death.

And she acts as if that was normal.

How can you even look at her after that? I don't understand.

Huh?

-We don't know why she did it. -What does that matter?

I can't understand why you are not as devastated as I am.

Can't you remember how horrible it was when she died?

We didn't just lose our mother when we were kids,

our family was destroyed too because of her.

And she has the nerve to come here and say that she made up her death.

All our suffering could have been prevented.

-[sobs] -Well, you are right.

But that's why we have to talk to her.

Don't you need to know what happened, why she did it?

No explanation can justify lying to us like she did.

Let alone taking 20 years to come back and tell us why.

Twenty years, Gracia.

Twenty years crying over something that never happened.

What are you doing at my favorite spot?

Are you…?

What's wrong?

Why the long faces?

It's Mom.

[Gracia] No, Paloma. Paloma. Paloma, no.

She's alive, Dad.

I know, honey. I feel that way too.

-[♪ tense instrumental music playing] -We've seen her.

She fooled us.

We've been living a lie.

What are you saying? Come on.

[♪ music concludes]

Hi.

How did court go?

[Miguel] Fine. Fine.

Álvarez's lawyer tried to make Lucas nervous,

but he reacted pretty well.

Do you know what I thought about earlier?

The polka dot dress.

Mm? Mm.

You were like eight, nine?

Yes. Grandma gave it to me as a present, to wear it during the town festival.

But it started raining, and we stayed home.

-[laughs] -Do you remember?

[laughs] Of course, I remember.

You had a terrible tantrum.

[laughs]

There was no way of calming you down.

We had to let you go to school in that polka dot dress the whole week.

[both laugh]

I remember I told you that, if you really loved me,

you would do something to make the rain stop.

Back then, you still believed that your father could do anything.

Now I know that you can't.

Even though, sometimes, it seems like I still believe that.

I talked to Paca earlier.

And I've realized two things.

One, that, sometimes, I still behave like that girl in the polka dot dress.

What's the other one?

That you are not a jerk.

[both laugh]

-Thank you. -[Lucía] Don't thank me.

You can be a bit soft at times.

What do you mean, "soft"?

Well, Paca said "weak."

I thought "soft" wasn't as harsh.

-Well, great, then. -[laughs]

The thing is that if you are soft, I am too.

And I don't want to be, Dad.

I want to find solutions to my problems.

I don't want to blame anyone.

That's beautiful, Lucía.

Well, it's from Paca too. [laughs]

She says that life will hit me more than once.

Mm. And she's right.

Life isn't easy. For anyone.

Mm. And now, after what happened with Lucas…

I found out all of a sudden.

But it hasn't been easy for you either.

And that's why I wanted to say, and this isn't from Paca, it's from me,

thank you for your patience.

[♪ emotional instrumental music playing]

Thank you for being there,

despite my insistence on treating you terribly.

And…

And?

And that…if life hits you,

I'll be there to support you.

Hopefully, I'll do it as well as you.

[Miguel] You already do.

-I love you. -I love you too.

[♪ music concludes]

MANTERANA TOWN COUNCIL

-[knocking on door] -[door opens]

Hey, what a surprise.

I would have liked to go to court with you, but…

What's the matter?

Is it because of the fight with Miguel?

[Gracia] No. No, no, no, no. It's not that.

It's…

-Tell me. -I need to talk to you.

Sure. Tell me, tell me. Have a seat.

-Have a seat. It's okay. -Thank you.

You are the first non-family member who'll know about this.

What's going on?

My mom.

Uh-huh.

It's going to sound crazy, but I swear to you it's true.

But what's going on?

[pants]

My mother is not dead.

She's alive. And she's in Manterana.

[♪ mysterious instrumental music playing]

[Gracia] She told us that she faked her death,

and that she would explain further when the three of us were together.

[♪ music concludes]

Paloma heard that and she couldn't handle it.

I'm not surprised. She's not even my mother

and I'm trying to understand it all. It blows my mind.

I know.

Do you realize the difference between thinking she's dead

and knowing she abandoned you?

I don't know whether I'll be able to forgive her either.

It depends on her explanation.

[Gracia] Yeah, but Paloma is right.

That explanation is 20 years late.

The pain she caused us can't be fixed now.

That's why I think you have to listen to her.

Listen to her explanation.

Otherwise, you'll always have doubts.

Mm?

Right. But it's really hard.

I know. But listen, you must look on the bright side.

All of a sudden, life gave you a gift.

Not long ago, you thought your mom was dead because of you.

And now,

life has given her back to you. It's amazing.

-[♪ somber instrumental music playing] -Right.

All these years wishing that what happened hadn't happened…

But it's not the same.

Because she faked her death. And God knows why.

During all those years, she didn't care about any of us.

You don't know that.

-[Gracia] Well, Tano… -Look,

you have to let go of the past and live your life.

I believe you should try and look towards the future.

Have faith in life. Have faith in second chances.

I believe you should call her and hear what she has to say.

And then, you decide.

And I hope your sister and your father do the same.

Thank you.

[chuckles softly]

-[♪ music concludes] -[birds chirping]

[Miguel] I was looking for you.

What do you want?

To thank you.

For talking to Lucía.

Everything I do, I do for my family,

even if you don't realize it sometimes.

I take it that I'm part of that family too.

You and Lucía. Have no doubt about it.

You're the husband of the person I love the most in this world.

And, hopefully, the father of my grandchildren.

And you, my kids' grandmother.

I won't be a typical grandma, as you can imagine.

-I've known you for a long time, Paca. -[♪ soft instrumental music playing]

And I know you are not typical at all.

Because I don't like ambiguities.

With me, it's either yes or no, black or white.

Family or outsider.

I just hope it's the same for you.

Mm?

[♪ music concludes]

[piano note playing]

[piano note continues]

[door opens]

[door slams]

[piano note continues]

[♪ somber instrumental music playing]

Shouldn't the kids be back by now?

[Gracia] They'll sleep over at a friend's house tonight.

Both of them?

I just wanted the three of us to be alone.

What for?

I told mom to come.

What?

I want to hear her explanation.

But do you think abandoning your family and making them think

you're dead can have any kind of explanation, Gracia?

I can't think of any.

Neither can I, but I want to listen to her. We have nothing to lose.

I don't know if I want to listen to her after…

Well, I do. I want to know what happened.

If you don't want to be present, you can leave.

You could have asked us at least.

If you want to talk to her, go to San Luis.

This is her home, Paloma.

[Paloma] Really? Do you think so?

I'm sorry, but it's not your home anymore if you leave for 20 years

and you don't care about it.

And the same goes for families.

We are not hers anymore.

Stop arguing, please.

Gracia, call her and tell her to meet somewhere else.

But…

[footsteps approaching]

[♪ music intensifying]

Hi.

Emilio.

[♪ music concludes]

[Paloma] So?

Tell us, where have you been all these years?

I've been in Buenos Aires, in Argentina.

There, I was taken in by some relatives

who emigrated many years ago.

Why haven't you contacted us this whole time?

Because…

I wasn't myself.

I couldn't.

[♪ melancholic instrumental music playing]

I wasn't ready.

When I arrived in Buenos Aires,

I hit rock bottom and started going through a severe depression.

I've been in mental hospitals for a long time.

I spent more time in them than out. It was a hard time.

But why did you leave?

That's difficult to explain, honey.

And to you, even more.

Dad says that…

you were in a relationship with Paca.

Yes.

Yes. I told them I found you two here.

And that you ran after Paca when I kicked you out of our house.

Yes. It's true.

I had a secret affair with Paca.

I knew that I would ruin your lives if I told you.

In your case, because I had betrayed you.

And why did you do it? We were happy.

I don't know, Emilio. I loved you.

But I fell in love with someone else and…

I knew that, if I told you, it would hurt you terribly.

And you too. Had I taken you with me and Paca,

far from here, you would have been away from your dad and…

had I stayed, your family life would have been a lie.

A bigger lie than faking your own death?

You think it's crazy. It is. Now I think it's crazy too.

I had such a hard time.

It was then when I started struggling with my mental health.

And I thought that…

with my death,

you would be closer to each other and that… [sobs]

…although it would kill me, I would be doing you a favor

disappearing from your lives.

I saw you inside a body bag on the road and…

then I saw your body at the morgue that same night.

-You were dead. -Mm.

How the hell did you do it?

How did you trick us?

I wasn't planning on tricking anybody.

I simply didn't die in that accident.

Miraculously.

The coroner certified my death by mistake,

because I was in such a deep state of hypothermia

that it looked like I was dead.

That's why he made that mistake.

When he was starting to proceed with the autopsy,

I regained consciousness.

And he got really nervous.

He had made a serious mistake.

He was very aware of that.

When I woke up, I didn't understand anything.

-[♪ mysterious instrumental music playing] -I didn't know what was going on.

The only thing I remembered was the car going off the road

and then, I was there, naked,

on a cold metallic table,

in a cold room, with man who was staring at me that I didn't know.

There was only one thing that was clear to me.

That I was alive.

I wished I were dead, because I was completely lost.

I had broken your heart, and I knew it.

And then it happened.

I got into a sort of hallucinatory state,

in which I saw that it would be better for all of you if I were dead.

So, I asked the coroner to help me disappear.

And what good was that going to do?

None, honey. I've been in therapy for years trying to answer that.

But, at that moment, it seemed the solution to my problems. Running away.

Now I've realized that…

if you run away, problems follow you forever.

But…

But who was in the coffin?

I don't know that, honey, I didn't ask the coroner. I don't…

I don't…

I don't know.

We were just two little girls.

-[Laura] Yes. -We needed our mother.

I know, and I'm so sorry, my love…

Believe me…

I went through hell all these years.

I've spared you having to share it with me.

Do you want me to thank you for abandoning us?

[Laura] No, my love.

I'm so sorry. I can only imagine all the pain I've caused you.

No, you can't.

I just hope you can forgive me one day.

Or, at least, understand it.

I don't know about them, but I'll never forgive you.

You don't know what we went through after your death.

If you knew, you wouldn't dare ask us that.

-Paloma, she said she was sick. -I don't care.

Do you know I ended up in a youth facility because Dad was depressed

and couldn't take care of me?

Did you know that?

No. No. I didn't know anything.

I'm sorry, honey.

You ruined our lives.

I don't deserve your forgiveness, so…

I appreciate that you've listened to me.

I'll go now.

I'll go now.

[Paloma sobbing]

-[♪ music concludes] -[crickets chirping]

[dog barking in distance]

[♪ mysterious instrumental music playing]

Who's there?

Hello?

Tomás?

Get off my property!

Haven't you heard me?

I'm armed.

[Laura] Don't shoot, Paca. It's me.

Get out here right now.

[♪ music intensifies]

Laura?

Paca.
