I'm John Carpenter

and sitting next to me today is Jamie Lee Curtis

the beautiful talented and legendary Jamie Lee

Jamie how you doing

I'm who cut that pumpkin John

I'm serious do you remember Tommy Lee Wallace

he did didn't he

and he did he did

we put a light in it and we were in the same garage

that we shot Donald Pleasants and Nancy Stevens in

wow and we dollied into it

yeah I remember it

so here we're here to talk about Halloween

all these years introducing me

there I am

you know when you're now in the movies you

somebody says it stars you

we're also gonna talk about other things than you today

not much haha

but you know what that's this

it was saying that was my first gig

that's all now

you had TV going on I had tea

a little TV going on before that universal

at universal I was

I was under contract universal

but that was the by the way

Kyle Richards yes

yes one of those housewives

that's correct reality TV stars

we haven't uh

we Jamie and I haven't seen each other in a long time

but

we are delighted to sit here and talk about Halloween

as you are watching it um

we've just seen Debra Hills name go by a couple times

Debra was not only John's girlfriend at the time

she became my best friend at the time after the movie

and she has passed on to other pastures

and we were talking about her earlier

remembering and missing her

um

I remember this Dolly shop

you do I do

of course I remember everything

unfortunately

I don't remember so well anymore at my advanced age

it's okay you're looking fine John

thank you very much you're welcome

so there it is directed by you

here's what I knew about you

my agent had said you were a very hip

young filmmaker who had a cult following

hip from assault on Precinct 30

I see

I see now

were you here the night we shot the opening

were you hanging well

of course um

we don't remember that

the opening for all of you Halloween lovers

is the same house you see at the rest of the movie

the entire crew John and Deborah

the entire art department

we all whitewashed this house to turn it into it

before the destruction

and the day we finished whitewashing it

hanging curtains etc

um we waited at night for this shot um

to take place

and we shot it with a panic glide

which was new brand new

and was incredibly heavy by uh

carried by Ray Stella the cameraman

and once by Dean Cundy the director photography

cause he had to spell Ray cause it was so heavy

right

and

there are a lot of technical challenges to this shot

it's actually in three or four pieces

I can't remember how many

but well you can

we can see the cuts because the cuts are

the first one is the hand going the drawer

you think so huh

is that what you say uh

I know there's a cut when the mask goes on upstairs

okay you

you point out to me where the cut is

with a hand glove in the drawer

I wanna see that or maybe it's not there okay

well we'll find out okay

John don't get more antagonistic now sorry

we're we're dealing with here

as we come around the corner

and going in the back of the house

is the limits of focus on a panamation lens

and so for a minute when the hand gets the knife

it does go out of focus

and we try to make it as brief as possible

and this is Deborah Hill's hand

that's correct um

because she is out of focus there suddenly

there it is it's really soft

no there's no cut there

that's correct Jamie

oh John

don't school me in front of my millions of fans here

it's gonna embarrass me

because there's a little camera shadow

tell me about it tell me about it big time

however as I say

you get best described

this as bunch of young kids trying to make a movie

yes and for us to attempt something shot this tough is

uh it was rough for us

we didn't really have the wherewill to do it

but we made it but but by the way

this interior of this house

and now we're gonna pause and wait for him to come

that was the quickest stop in movie history by the way

hey I'm just saying he may be young

but he was like super fast

that's correct

but this shot there's also a camera shout out just

that's correct thank you you know

but you have to remember

people were ducking out of the way

moving lights um

putting flags up to stop those camera shadows

all like a little um choreographed dance

that's correct and you were a member of the

of the crew that move these things

I was not I was actually sitting outside waiting

and every time that you would

someone would say cut okay

we're about to see one of the cuts correct John

I believe so as we pick up the mask and put it on

ready again because we go to a different take now

that's a cut and we're at a different take now

probably

because the bare breasts that we see appeared better

in this particular case

I see then I I can't remember why now

but I there she is she was a she was game

that's really cool yeah

she was game and again none of this existed

this house was decrepit and old

and here

we hung these curtains and put the furniture in

that day

and very creative and horrible

I remember this was very scary

we never see it and with the knife going up

very scary bizarre

well it's scary John

scary run on the breasts

which is nice and now big run downstairs

there was a cut in the black

there was yes

it was it was here somewhere

either earlier or right there

but

and if you notice when we get down to the stairs here

they're running head down the stairs

opening the door

and the parents are gonna come up and the cameraman

grown adult has to kneel down right

in order to be the height

we're gonna reveal this kid in a second here

there he is

there he is

we actually hired a crane for this shot

I remember all the way back to reveal the neighborhood

the thing about that opening shot that was so powerful

was waiting outside every time someone yelled cut

there was like a grown

because of course the all in one wasn't

you know some it didn't work for whatever reason

and when the first time

I remember when it first happened cause you had a few

uh huh

it was so thrilling and and and to be 19 years old

the last day of the movie that was shot

the last day of the movie

that's correct and I have the slate from that shot

why were you given that

I didn't get permission for you to have that

I'm so sorry

Ray Stella gave it to me

the cameraman or Dean did one of the two

uh Donald Pleasants up in Lake Hollywood uh

shooting a couple of uh

exterior shots

and the entire dialogue scene with Donald here

who I became great friends with later

but I was frightened of at the time

and Nancy Nancy Stevens

who married the director of Halloween to Rick Rosenthal

that's correct who

and you were starring in Halloween

I did yes

you did in a wig

but we'll get into that later

why was that because I had to match my hair

I know but why were your hair different

what did you like gone off and done other jobs

why weren't you waiting for this

this was very creepy I remember this sound was awful

because we were in a garage with rain pattern

and maybe some of the worst sound ever

ever done in a in a movie

I didn't do the sound but I will tell you

I will tell you that I remember very clearly

that first lunge up the glass of the person in white

to this day if I'm watching the movie

I still I still have that first like

ah moment sorry

I do values the big wimp

no John

that's a scary moment that's a castle in that

yes and you can kind of tell y'all

sure if you freeze frame sure

sure sure

sure um

but this was an amazing setup scene

she was great with her she's true

I know and there's the first little red herring

uh huh love that

uh huh

so this was in the spring of 1978

yeah you were 19 years old

my god I know

I know wow

and I hadn't

I had done some television and my manager at the time

Chuck Bender remember Chuck John

beautiful girls well

there were some yes

Karen Lamb he represent Karen Lamb exactly

but here okay

so you see the people they're all out of their cages

and that's a little creepy

but then when he's like no no

you have to move forward get going

come on hurry up

and then that one I'll wait for it

there's all Dean Cundy magic and

something happens

oh no

there's just relax relax relax

I'm getting a little nervous

you're telling me about your manager

I will but it's about to happen

wait

it happens in a minute no

it happens like right

he what he runs over there

I know you establish that she's alone

now you're back to her and then ma okay

I'm sorry that's just effing scary

that's a little scary okay

anyway I had this um

and my manager put me up for this job

I mean I remember on Kawenga

your offices around that's correct

in that weird little building

they had very small offices right

and I remember meeting you and and

and you know

auditioning for you you read for us career many times

you did many three times

I don't remember that yes

there was a first reading and then there was a sort of

uh second reading

and then there was the finalist reading

and do you remember who the other actress was

hey time out a second

you read more than once

I only remember that first reading and thinking

she's perfect well

but you had two people in mind

do you remember who the other woman was

I do

yes I don't know if I should say it

because that's not fair to her

she knows does she Joan

wasn't it Joan prather no

no no

no it was the girl in jaws too

I don't even know who that is

I know and I don't remember her name either

apologize

because I thought she did well with the terror part

but not as good as you well

I didn't know that at the time

I remember looking I remember doing the scene

and looking out the window in your offices

which was the scene of Lori alone in her bedroom

when she sees the shape

and then he's not there and she's talking to herself

that was the scene you had me audition with

like you're being ridiculous

I just don't remember that

yeah this bizarre

and this was Pasadena it is

and this particular house

I think it's your house yes

has a little shrine outside to you

oh does it

has a little thing with pumpkins

and it says this is the house that Jamie

Jamie Lee Curtis sat on the porch

wow that's my car at the time

my Cadillac

there you are making okay

so this outfit here I am right now

tell me about the outfit well

first of all my hair had been permed and then

and then we decided to let it just go frizzy

so that's why my hair looks so thick

cause my hair is thinner than yours

um and the outfit was from JC Penney

um we decided to buy all of her clothes

as if her mother was buying her clothes for school

uh huh

and you basically go to one place and you buy an entire

quote wardrobe

you know a new skirt pants

turtleneck sweater

those tights the shoes

but it was perfect and what you established here

even though by the way it's supposed to be fall

and none of the trees are anything but green

and you actually do see some palm trees occasionally

yes

but what was beautiful was the establishment of just

the regular life of a young girl

look at all the screen time I gave you

I know but looking

but you like but that's how you established it John

there's Tommy Doyle

little Tommy Doyle who is now grown up human

Brian Andrews who is at all the conventions

yes I've seen him

very nice guy but this was just beautiful

this establishment of just this regular

small town life

was exactly what you needed to establish

to allow something frightening to come in

because you really believe in these very simple shots

that we are really these people

I I believe it

yeah and

and by the way this is what the house really looks like

yep so when that polished earlier shot that you saw

the beginning of the movie

this is what the house look like

in real life don't you remember when we shot this Jamie

was this early on and this was the first day

it was did

this was did we shoot the high school first

I thought we did no

I'm oh no

no no no no no

absolutely not we moved to the high school second

this was the first day of shooting right here

right now walking across the street

in fact the first shot was not me walking alone

the first shot was when I'm walking

and Tommy Doyle says hey Lori

and then we walk and then these

because this little song that I'm gonna sing

I remember

you wrote in the script that there was a song

and then oh

and then the scary thing happened

and all you said was like

make up a song and I made up I wish I had you

two of us because I didn't have a melody in my head

and you were just like yeah

just sing whatever

it was so great it was great

and this is so scary

now I have to tell you

have everybody watching

that Jamie has become much more assertive since 1978

she's here telling me what to do

actually I cannot remember some of these

that's okay John

thank you where was this

yeah remember

it was actually all

it was actually all organized

so we could shoot it in one or two days

right all in the same area

Alhambra or and or South Pasadena right

we shot in Pasadena South Pass an Alhambra

but this is all one shot yes

it is there's not a cut in it

that's correct yeah

and that's the efficient but

that's when the Panic Glide became a tool

that allowed you on a low budget movie

to shoot a page and a half of dialogue in one shot

here's your here's your school see

yes this was the set

this was the second half of the first day

it was yes we moved to the school

boy you have a great memory

look at all this hairstyles

now we're talking about this late 70s

you can see my hair is very frizzy

which was also very perfect for the sort of late 70s

girl this was beautiful

and there are a lot of shots of me looking out a window

and no

see there he is

now you'd have some look how pretty you look

you're beautiful thank you

it's beautiful always have been

always will be look at you

now if you were doing this scene in a modern movie

I'd be going what the would you

I loved I loved that she was smart

here she was doing the monologue about being a brainiac

and you know

that was that was not my

so it's not my way now

people have criticized me more than you

that saying about this film that the virgin

the virginal girl is is the one who survives

and all the girls who are sexually active

yes get punished

yes and they felt that I was being a retro feminist

and I was that your intent

no no

thank you I

I didn't think it was your intent

um

I will tell you that trying to find pumpkins in April

or March was difficult yes

it was so there we have a couple

this is one of them we squashed it flat

we squish it flat with little Tommy Doyle

I know and one of the kids is bullying him

is when your blondes is right

that one the dark haired one on the right

uh huh right

oh oh

we broke the pumpkin I know

and you basically got one shot to break the pumpkin

and the kid did the stunt

what do you want

that's Irwin's uh huh

and that's your friend my buddy from film school

Nick Castle

who's gone on to a career as a

as a director

now retired and a father of three at this point

he was a father of two small children

yeah look at that

look at that shot John

look how scary that is you're so hilarious

no I'm not

I'm telling you thank you

this this stuff is scary

you don't know who this is

you have

all you've seen now is some shape of a guy in a mask

that's correct

and you've established two people who are vulnerable

that's correct and you

and you are now showing from his point of view there

that's correct their life

and absolutely just makes it scary period

end of story there's no other

you made a crack about

in modern movies that you'd be saying

what the yeah

what what is your opinion of modern movies

I wouldn't I

you know what

I wouldn't see a modern horror movie for anything no

no John

cause I look at this shot

come on why wouldn't you Jamie

in the modern movie you would never

hold on the shot you would have cut into this 3

4 times

I think part of the reason that a low budget film

you it satisfies something that is really financial

rather than directorial in some ways

because that's a shot you don't have another shot

that's your shot so you're gonna run that shot

it's true but even

by the way

this great shot where you establish where we were at

the middle of nowhere looks like farmland

I can't remember where that was

somebody told me recently yes

in valley no

it's the other directions weird

but this shot just the way this was done was so creepy

right by some railroad track

yeah but it was so creepy

and wait in the Donald

the train comes by and we managed it

Donald managed to hold it

and that's as long before he turned around right

he thought with the shot was ruined

but yeah

it wasn't it wasn't

but this was just so

I don't understand why you won't go to see a modern

I don't like to be frightened

trying at all

at all there's nothing I find interesting

provocative titillating about being frightened

it just doesn't hold me in thrall at all

I'm I'm

I wanna know what happens

I don't want the mystery I don't want the suspense

I don't like it so for me

any sort of horror film that

that has suspense in your movie had

that's what I think made it so successful

I I don't

and here are the fabulous other girls

PJ and Nancy

that's correct PJ souls

Nancy Loomis oh no

no this is me and PJ

when does Nancy show up in a minute

and this scene the three girls

Yakin is as

you girls are fabulous by the way

all three of you were oh

just look at my face

just look at how enthralled I am of this girl

you know who seems to know everything

you know look at her

this was this

this is South Pass and it's a beautiful

here comes Nancy Lomas

and she is married to Tommy Wallace

that's correct the art director was was

well sorry

but that's okay yes

key now teaches drama and university

brilliant artist yes

a brilliant artist it still looks beautiful

I just saw her

and you look at this and this is why the movie worked

because this is America

this is the thing that when you conceived it being

originally it was supposed to be babysitter murders

and you conceived it on Halloween

these are babysitters

this is what American babysitters look like

I forgot my chemistry book

so who cares

I always forget my chemistry book and my math book

and my English book and my

let's see my French book

and who needs books it looks real Americana

it does it's a beautiful street

this this one we chose in South Pass

it had just has these old trees and lot of foliage

and I fell in love with it

speed kills yeah

here we go so Jamie

let's talk a little bit more about your hair

I wanna talk about speed kills because this moment

hey jerk

yeah when he stops

speed kills yes

so scary

so scary this is just

you know

this is like us flipping somebody off as we're driving

and then all of a sudden they stop

so what was the concept behind your hair

well my hair was just merely

we wanted it to

look like a non sophisticated girls hair

and if you most people permed their hair back then

that was a very common thing for girls to do

so what we did is we permed it

but then we just let it go sort of natural

we didn't do much to it so we didn't

so it's sort of permed it's a little frizzy

and it doesn't look like a sophisticated girls hairdo

what was your hair like it was a very

very fine and so it would have back at all or what

no it just

it wouldn't it

it wouldn't have looked as bushy as it does here

and that's what was so this was so beautiful again

all of this layering of reality

girls smoking talking laughing teasing

you know um is

and look how long you hold the shot

that's correct

again you don't know who's watching

you don't know whose point of view that is

it's just layering in all of this scare

that's just insane

nobody would hold a shot that long

we have a music you go in there to hold us

and the whole idea is

this movie in the beginning is more contemplative

anything else

so it's lulling you into a pattern of kind of

let's just watch these girls regularity

and something that what their dialogue is about

what they're talking about

they're talking about their lives

they're not talking about anything consequential right

they're just being and one's going off

to her house that's correct

look at the big old shoes on her

corkies they're called is that right yes

and again Nick

see she's not looking

I think the idea was that your character

is more observant

and more tuned in to the world than the other girls

other girls are a little

little more superficial than you are

in some basic level superficial

I don't mean a judgment no

no no

I understand

but they are a little more bold than your character

and your character sees a lot in this movie

you looked out from the the school room and you saw him

now you saw him down the street

but is he there or is he not there

my cigarette smoke is entering somewhere

there it is right there oh

I didn't ever notice that

but this was so creepy for people that he was there

then he's not there

and then she's saying that

she's teasing you know

standing right there

poor Lori

I mean it's just

but you've also established that sort of

poor Lori uh huh

imagining boys it's just

it breeds all of this fear in the audience

because they know she's not imagining something

that's great

all of her friends think she's imagining something

so they're not taking her

when she says these things

they're teasing her about it

they're not taking her that seriously

and she really means well

and okay this was such a big scare

nice POV shot there

cut back

okay by the way

did you see I'm laughing yes

I freaking couldn't laugh

I saw I saw this was

I was new at this you covered your

I know your face with your hands because I was laughing

because I knew it was a scare moment

and yet I laughed on it I know that

I know you probably wanted to fire me that day

yeah well

you keep saying things you know what

I will tell you you may not remember this

I will tell you that that first day with Tommy walking

when we got when I got home from work that day

you called me I do remember

and you I do remember

I had done a good job that day and that

how happy you were

and when the phone rang and my roommate

Tina Cassidy picked up the phone said Jamie

it's John Carpenter I thought for sure I'd been fired

there's I

I'm you know

I just was convinced of it

and it was just so sweet of you

no one has ever done that to me since then

no director to hear it

well you see how bushy my hair is there

yeah yeah

that's the whole and by the way

boom you're into Halloween

so the same thing as you've layered it in very little

none of the houses have a bunch of decorations

no nowadays

you know everybody decorates insanely

then you didn't layer it in yet

kid had a pumpkin in his hand

and now you see some people leaving the house

and that's about it

this was the scene we auditioned to

and this was the scene we shot again

we shot this the first time

and for some reason we we did a retake

I do not remember why yeah

I don't remember I just remember being irritated

we had to shoot it again it wasn't your fault

no it was some $10 just creepy

this was the rehear this was the audition this scene oh

you remember more about that than I do yeah

no I because I talk to myself and then the phone rings

uh huh yep

and by the way look at you

you hand the phone you pull back and there's the phone

of course the phone's gonna ring yes it is yes it is

this is nice shot and

and deemed at a beautiful job in this awesome

was gorgeous and you're not overlit here

I like that I like that a lot hardly

I like it very little fill

you know it's hot in the background nice little soft

uh huh beautiful and it looks like

it looks real to me and it's just this is so real

this moment girls talking on the phone going God

why are you stop you scared me

it's just so real

and of course later when the phone comes into play

it's just beautifully threaded

I gotta give Deborah Pill a lot of props for that

she

she helped us both the screenwriters

through the girl thing uh huh

how do how do teenage girls cracked

and look at this this is so

we did this all in one shot

yeah look at this one shot

we walked into the window to the phone call into bed

yep

look how beautiful that is

and then this was my and this is it

there's two changes in the movie

and now we're into the change

look at the leaves blowing

and those are all

leaves that were painted by the art department

gathered up again into bags

and every time we would do a scene

you would throw them in front of a fan

that's correct because it wasn't the fault

that's correct so

you had a couple bags of leaves

and kept throwing them out

which was fascinating

cause as you'll notice down the street

no leaves haha

only leaves follow you right

but but

look at how great that looks

when they fly through the frame

and this is me pulling my hair back a little

you know I've got dressed up

and again

just so lightly threaded the help the Halloween part

no leaves by the way

just FYI everyone win

but no leaves lot of leaves right behind me

I love the awkwardness of this that

you know her awkwardness

yeah your walk across was little girl

it was very and she's carrying this pumpkin to carve

with her charge that night

and then of course and by the way

she does a weird line reading here

I've never understood she says probably Mister

I say it must have been Mister

ah I can't remember what it was oh

well here in a minute

there's a weird line reading that I've always wondered

why why the line reading was so weird

who's Carlot and Donald Pleasant and whose car is that

God why do you keep asking

because I don't remember okay

I do not remember well

I just found it was probably a crew member yeah

I would imagine nice car though

I know this is an Altadena wasn't it

I wasn't here this you know

remember these days with Donald

you had Donald for a limited time

that's correct we have three or four days yeah

do it and so this part with Donald and Nancy

in the whole beginning I wasn't in

and he kissed his wife and his two children goodbye

yeah this this scene I just remember again

look at the pan point I know well

we used it a lot in lieu of a dolly

but it also allowed a lot more mobility

lot longer takes and able to move around things

and how long had the panic light been in

because it was the first time I had ever seen it

it had been in a movie The Exorcist 2

which was in the early 70s

I can't remember what year that was

but they used it very well

there was called Steady Cam back then

this was the panamation version of it

but we used it that's panningglide right there

we used it for everything

we used it well

because you just don't have to put the camera on

on tracks you don't have to go right off you go

so it speeds along the process and allows you much

and Jamie Lee you're smoking

I'm smoking marijuana I understand

but I'm a good girl smoking marijuana

so look the way I smoke I know I'm like

it's I take very small little tokes of it

and I'm riddle was watching you Laura

this was fabulous again

the minute you introduce this car now

uh huh of course

we don't ask ourselves too heavily why he

how he Learned to drive but haha

but we don't wanna do that yeah

I I'm just gonna ask you the question

I mean look

this is it we're not gonna be doing this again okay

clearly

you had no future thought for this

this this

this for this movie for this no

no no

there was no like quadruple in your head

this movie was simply about this story

these girls on this night yeah

it needed to end the way it did

because Michael Myers is a force of nature

as opposed to a human being

he's a he's evil incarnate

it was the idea of the producers

I understand I know

I understand that I know

but what happens is of this was so great

of course you know

the classic thing your father's the cop

yeah you know

smoking dope in the car

not that I ever did no

I know you Amber

no you're a good girl

no

I never had another thought about a sequel or anything

but you know what happens

of course it's like the fact that it's

later on turns out that he's my brother

in some version of a movie

maybe even Halloween too

whatever it clearly wasn't the intent

no and

and I've said this since the beginning

since 1978 when we made this movie

and it's funny to me because

you know people

a lot of people

spend a lot of time looking for these clues

this was the only scene I was in with Donald

except for the last scene

yep when he comes to the house

yeah as a matter of fact

it was

I know again

South Pass actually a block over from the house

yep during rush hour

no this I

I still feel this didn't need to have a sequel

well no

I understand there's the car

by the way

we drive away in the car he walks up talk

talk talk

but now here's the scene was added because

because he wanted to transition tonight

had to have a transition tonight

we wanted one and because we were short

oh time wise

time wise yeah

far so so I remember we went

look at how beautiful this shot is

I know this with a with a sun banging in the

I know but it's so beautiful

because it is the transition shot from the back seat

which I like a lot which is unusual for the time

I like that and

and we're gonna go tonight very quickly

as soon in a minute here right

the next cut is night and I remembered that

you needed a transition between day and night

cause when we pull away from the cop on the street

it's full day late afternoon

and then the next shot is night

and I remember we had come to the end of the dialogue

I'm trying to remember

I'm this I'm trying to remember whether or not

now here right and there's a little

there's a little MGM studio laboratory trick here

because we

we began to do a little slight fade on it

just at the very end

just to bring it down a little bit right there yep

that's yeah and I say it's fading out slowly

it's just like slow fade to get it darker to go to boom

all right

Grove Avenue right in Hollywood California yep

now known as West Hollywood is it West Hollywood

oh my darling no it's not well

I'm so sorry

I live near the beach I live in West Hollywood

it's not it's regular Hollywood but okay

right up the street here is Colonel Sanders and sunset

yes and right that way is Hollywood

yes and both of these houses don't look the same

that's correct they

there are there

we are on the tour we are on

I know that oh thank

you know we're gonna be on the tour

we might as well be on the tour for this

that's correct now

that house looks very different

yes the other house looks very different

took me a minute to figure out which one was really

the house right

and the proximity of the houses is so crucial

in the filmmaking that's correct

the way you walk across the street from which is maybe

look but that

that connection of the two you establish here

look just

just establishing that he's there is

watching everybody is terrifying

because you've established who these people are

you know who these girls are

you like who these girls are

it's regular stuff knock knock

hi I'm here

he just moves away

I got this whole thing

the whole life that these girls had

and the life of this small town was normal placid

beautiful idelic

it was meant not to be anything evil going on there

evil came to town the night he came

that's correct that is correct

Sheriff I remember this

hold on

that shot a minute till the actors get out of the car

then we slowly boom up

see nowadays

I would if I was shooting this

I'd try to hurry that child

of course you would a little bit

just a touch but everything was very slow in this

you hold on things because as you said

you were a little short in time

that's correct

so things didn't have to be snapped up so quickly

but as you know from your

from your son yeah

modern audiences are used to yeah

fast cut let's go

let's go let's go

this is the way the house really looks

yep so

when you see it whitewashed

in the beginning of the movie

that's how much whitewashing took place

you're very impressed with your ability to white

watch this you know what I was impressed with

the fact that the entire crew of a movie

including a leading actress join together

how about that and hung

you know

that's where it really became this group effort

where there was no demarcation line between

your director I'm the actors

you know some of the grip

we're all painting and wallpapering

like we were putting on a

if there's one thing that the

people are watching this right now

will remember

is that you were a part of the whitewash crew

well but it was not only whitewash

it was also separate

it was creating a reality out of this shell of a house

it was really an abandoned house

yeah no

no no

I mean

it looked like this uh huh

you guys didn't do this to it

this is basically what it looked like

this is the house and

you know

when you see the girl get killed in that corner

with the beautiful little mirror and

you know all of that was dressed in

but there were parts of the house that were touched

no and that didn't have to look that exactly

yeah and people were hiding that

I also just remember seeing the shadows of the crew

in the house hiding and moving

by the way you can always tell candy glass

cause it's slightly yellow and thick

tell me about it and there's a place coming up

a big sequence coming up where

you know it's so clearly candy glass

I don't know what to do about that

but I don't I don't know what to do

there's nothing you can do

luckily we had candy glass

we could afford candy exactly

those days I didn't want to hurt you guys

thank you and I'm grateful

you might hurt anybody in this movie

I understand

and nobody was hurt in the making of this movie

you could we could put that

but this was he was so great choosing Donald

it just he

you believe everything he says

I would I just a big fan of his senses

I was a kid and after this movie

I say we became real close friends

he's a really funny guy

but we didn't know this then

he was he was a scary figure to me

we hired Donald I met him for lunch on

wait a minute was it

I believe it was hamburger ham

it was

and he said I don't know why I'm doing this movie

I don't understand it

I don't understand the part I'm playing

but the only reason I'm here to do this

is because my daughter

is in a rock and roll band in England

and she liked the music consultant

precing 13 there you go

that was it that was my recommendation

okay he kind of

in an interview with the BBC

kind of bad mouth me from the other set

but that all went away when the movie was successful

that is funny how that works it yeah

that's okay I was scared of him

and his name was after the guy in Halloween right

I mean in Psycho

Loomis ST Louis yeah right

here we go okay

babysitting time well

but this was just again

all of the

sort of quintessential life of a young American Girl

babysitter with a little you know

with her little charge uh huh

and all I remember is he was a terrific young actor

but he had a lot of energy

he did

and I remember taking his wrist coming up in a scene

I actually when he says about something and I get

he would get a little serious

uh huh um

and you go into the overs

you go into these over shoulder shots

uh huh up

there's the phone again and the phone

the use of the phone in the movie is as a source of

like this regularity and then

of course the source of terror later

that's correct when you hear the terror

but you don't know what you're hearing

that's correct oh

oops hold on

so did you have a good time making this movie

oh it was the greatest time of my life John

it was the single greatest experience of my entire life

as an actor why is that

because I was a young girl

making a movie with a bunch of gorilla filmmakers

you the oldest person on the movie was you

and everyone was young and there was

there was no polish to it at all

we all pitched in together

all the actors and makeup and hair and wardrobe

shared one small little Winnebago

the art department had a truck

you know it was a small little unit

and there was just something so

pleasant about being a part of something where the

the food that that was brought into us

was food made by some friend of Debra's

that's correct this woman showed up with lunch

it just was different than anything that's happened

since the minute it became unionized

then by the way

I'm a union member I get it

but there was something really beautiful about

look at that shot look that shot John

it was it was this is the most fun I've ever had ever

and and the least stress for some reason

I can't explain that to you

I don't know why

I know why because we didn't have anything to lose

that's correct that's correct

you know like what there were no expectations nothing

nothing none of you is an actress or anything no

no it was show up and play and it was play

I agree with you 100% and it was just

it allowed a sort of naturalistic

nature for all of us to do our work

and then of course you get to do stuff like this

this terrifying point of views

something that you went to film school

you understand from a technical aspect

I can't tell you what that's called up

I was from the back and I wish she was also

and there's Kyle

there's our little Kyle who is terrific yep

I directed both Kyle and Kim Richards wow yeah

and I remember and then

and then this is when you go out to the scary

scary scary place oh so scary

and again look at her face

it's so fabulous because we're not expect

these young people aren't expecting

I'm gonna have to recommend some horror movies

but it was the precursor to the VHS the Betas Giant no

this is my movie collections and it was my

one of my favorite movies

so I put this on

you guys are watching the horror thought

of course we are there you go and by the way

I see this and it was did you come up with that

was just it was so natural for me to twirl my hair

and so it's such a it's such a um

a girl thing to do and

but the scene is this it

because he keep because he kept coming into my shot

he kept moving his head over

because he's a young guy

you know you held his hand

well because it was forcibly

and I literally am like going like this as I'm talking

so that he would lean over

because it was hard for him

kid keep out of my shot kind of promise

but these were rare

on a very short 21 day shooting schedule

probably three days out of the 21 I didn't work yeah

but look at how many times you tease the audience

for the whole the whole second act is

it's big teeth giant teeth

but that's not anything but that's what I'm saying

and it's a get you uneasy

well that's the idea

that's the whole idea and to expect him anywhere

and the problem is nowadays

anytime they would have demanded you kill something

so much earlier and the idea I

know she's so funny she's put the phone down

she's washing her clothes

and actually I have to tell you

I love working with kid actors are fabulous

you know you were making a face that why

you know why I just had bad experience

no I just it's

it makes me anxious

really yeah

I did there's something

and so you thought that she had been killed already

and she isn't cause she's just stuck in the window

she's so funny Nancy has great physical

you know Nancy was just a really underrated actor

she's really terrific yeah

I love working with her she just has such

this whole thing where she kind of

comes in and stumbles for a little bit

and like foam that whole little bit comes down

yeah and then she

and then just when she looks at her

and it's just that plaintiff like

Jamie I want to explore

examine this uncomfortable

discomfort with child actors

you know what I just don't

it for me

children should be children

and I I

I feel a little uncomfortable

when I'm working with a kid just

I've done it obviously

um I respect the fact that they may want to

and there's

some kids personalities are just so powerful that they

they feel like they have to

if for me

I just it makes me a little uncomfortable

how old were you when you started

eighteen

I was I thought you were a little kid actor

we were did you know any

my mother got a call from Ray Stark when I was

15 years old

asking if I would audition because he knew me

asking if I would audition for the Exorcist wait

and my mother said no and I'm smart

your mom is smart and I but but you can imagine me

I have full of personality and you know

I knew Ray very well and I'm sure he looked at me as

you know I was 12 years old and you know

he would have maybe thought

I would have been good in the exercise

you would have been great

but I don't think you would bit of fun experience no

I don't think it would have been either

and I don't know why I just kid actors

there's just you know what it ultimately is

it's adults making money off of kids

there's some exploitative aspect of that

that if they really could make the decision to

and there by the way

there are a few of them Jodie Foster is an example

she's worked since she was a baby

she went to college

she has a great relationship with her mother

she turned out to be a director

someone who loves film loves film history blah blah

blah there are different stories to that

and I think that it makes me a little uncomfortable

I mean that's not okay this though

it's a tool that just keeps people sort of

what is going to happen

interact in a way without a cut

I remember that and now and then she does take off

remarkable job that Dean did yeah

but you spent all that time leading it up

now that and she hasn't wondered about the door

I just was watching that I realized well

you probably shot all of those on the same night oh

because nobody believes him about nothing

can you imagine how scared they would be in real life

this whole idea came from

there was a house that was supposedly

the scene of a horrible murder

everybody was frightened especially when we were kids

I think every small town has one of those

so this was the

but then you pay off this like fake scare with

I'm sorry that is effing scary right

I mean seriously

the cheapest scare possible

you were young director and you

I mean

you still knew how to make the cheapest scare possible

and guess what it turned into a very expensive scare

you know what I mean a very profitable scare

let's put it that profit there you go

it was obviously a big hit

um it was a slow building hit

that's not a big hit at first at all

it was in a few you know

theaters and then it started to do well

it wasn't for a while that it gathered this sort of

steam that's correct

behind it what about what happened to you

nothing happened to me and honestly

I didn't have a job

I did an episode of Love Boat with my mother

and oh

here come the promiscuous teenagers

which of course you have to have

I'm assuming this is based on your life story

it is yes

it is these two

this is the kind of relationship I wanted to have

all during high school but never had

we all wanted to have and by the way

none of us had but it is that

sort of like drinking beer with your cute boyfriend

and then

so now continue so I literally got no jobs

I didn't

Charlie's Angels episode where I play a pro golfer

and I did a Love Boat with my mother

and that was it and that's why you

who at that point now was my friend

Deborah and I were now best friends

um you uh

wrote me the part in the fog

I wanted to work with you again

but you really were helping me because clearly

the expectation was that I would get work

and I didn't get work I didn't know no

no no

then then okay

so here very scary

I just remember this then at some point after all this

you got to do Terror Train another no

no no

so after the fog then

I did Prom Night and Terror Train in quick succession

for the first money I ever made

I think I made like $25,000 for one of them

and a little more than that in the other one

good for you and then I went uh

off to Canada uh

to Australia and made a movie

those two were made in Canada

yes directed by a friend of mine

Richard Franklin that's correct

yes I made a thriller

not really a horror film

and then I came back and made Halloween too

and that was my last horror film

so Prom Night and Terror Train were the low budget

Canadian finance where they have the two Americans per

that's right movie uh

program and

and that sort of solidified my horror um

street cred and at that point

I was in horror films um

but then you got out and you stayed out

but I got out specifically

I got out absolutely specifically

because whatever I knew being from show business

being my parents

I knew that if I had continued doing these films

I would not have been able to

have another opportunity to do something else

and very soon after these movies

I was in Trading Places you know

very quickly um

I in fact got Trading Places because of horror films

because John Landis was directing a short about

Hollywood 50s horror movie

uh huh trailers

uh huh I remember that

called Coming Soon I remember it

and he hired me to narrate it

I remember at all and because of that

I met him and he figured out I was a little funny

and so he hired me for Trading Places

so very quickly oh I remember this

yeah yeah

but the thing that was so creepy about this is that

we all know that upstairs is this dead girl

and it's very creepy and know

and look at how real all of this is

so you're an audience member

you now know that

they're alone in the house with the bad guy

I'm alone in the house

I'm telling this to you like that's okay

but I know one other thing

and I know that every time the panimation look

she's like we're alone

comes in with a 75 millimeter shot of you

camera loves you loves your family

I love taking shots of you

I remember when I was seeing this in the theater

and the lights went off at that house

and you thought oh no

look at this look at that beautiful

beautiful that's a nice beautiful little look

and PJ did a nice little sex scene here for me

so I wouldn't shoot up their nostrils so much

she was a cat she drove this truck

I remember when she was with Dennis Quater

that's right they were married

that's right were they married yet

yes they were married

and they were married they showed up

in my apartment oh okay

I think this was the moment with you when I

when I saw the movie where I went

this is really scary um the

when he puts him up on the wall

um and by the way the

the candy glasses in that bottom left panel

I know this and you can see it there

because we only shot in the kitchen that one day

so you shot this part of the kitchen

it wasn't sequential obviously so this bum

no nothing there

maybe it's over here

and then just the feet

it's so funny I know

it's so interesting to me

and then just that how did

he was on box and just lifted himself up

wow and uh

nice bleam on the knife nice fingerprints on the knife

defeat but there's really no

there's no blood look at that violence

I know you don't even see the knife in him

until later we couldn't afford it

but that's one of those old times things

where it's by his side right

and then he moves his head back and forth

as if looking at a butterfly

my dog does that when I take food out of a thing

I can't even comment this is just creepy

now when is once again Profster Deborah

this was entirely her idea

that he should have him come up in a sheet

with his glasses on ABS entirely

that was I was a little unsure of it at first

her and how did that work with you two

she would bring that idea and then you would write it

Derek I talked through the idea first

first right out of the box

it's a low budget movie right

you're producing I'm directing

I went off to do a TV movie

and she sat and wrote the first draft

and I took her work

I sat down and rewrote what she added subtracted

this is the scene this particular scene

was almost exactly as she wrote it

now is this is her nudity in the movie

part of the reason why you got a rating

what was the rating on the movie

R and it was because I have no clue

I have no idea they

I love how when she

gets exasperated here and she's like fine okay great

then for some reason we uh

she gets up

puts on her clothes and she gets choked in this seat

right we had to loop it I cannot remember why

well here it again we've established the phone

you've established the banality of the phone

uh huh and now the phone is going to this was just oh

it was

because we wanted it to carry over into your shot

that's why we did it anyway

Tommy Tommy Wallace is standing behind her

pretending to strangle her in the

in the looping stage she's did great

but that but

just pulling all her might

to get that sheet off of there to

because that's the idea

she pulls it off as she drops out a shot

and there he is

so fabulous

so completely creepy and again back to the reality

oh come on this you're hilarious to watch this well

I've never sat down and watched one of the films

we've made together ever with you okay

but watch okay okay

I'm watching I promise this is I promise

huh and now I call back

it just the use of the phone is this tool to kind of

I don't know I girls do that

but the girls talk to each other all the time and

and today it's texting that's correct

but then now she knows something

that's correct and that's when

this is what was so

interesting to me was at this moment

and I remember we took the script

you and I remember we sat down with it

because we were gonna shoot it all out of order right

we numbered I have the original script

it is numbered on levels of intensity ah

so that I knew I could always go back to it

like what at what point is she really yeah

over the top and what point is she on the fence

and what point is she oblivious

and because we were back and forth and back and forth

and this was the moment

to go from the shot of her in the house where

you know she knows something

to him here uh huh

where he's now removed from the scene

and now you're you see

he sees the car he knows he's there correct

you're now got the clock ticking correct

you've now started the timer

and now he's running up the street

he knows he's somewhere

but he doesn't know where in the neighborhood

he finds the cops isn't that correct

no this is the guy's car right

this is what he see right

he just saw that uh huh

and now he knows that he's in town

and he's acting out in whatever

that's right he's up with the odds okay

and now we're with her at that moment

she knows something's up the kids are asleep

and this is when you here's where the door knob just

for those people who love film fuck UPS

um this is the door knob

okay I'm watching

so very careful you walk over

I'm almost sure but okay

yeah grab

get the keys but then

and that was my

some of my knitting balls and you sold it very nicely

so now this is the great this is the movie for me John

this and the cut back to that house

the back and forth between her

on this dark street when everybody

this is the moment

when I was seeing the movie for the first time

and this woman stood up and screamed

don't go in there and I knew

everything that you had said you wanted to achieve

had been achieved how good

good that at this point they are so in her corner

oh hell yes

are you sure so that when she is approaching this house

this is we see through her eyes

terrifying her and we know everything ahead of her

we have everything and we don't want her to go in there

that's correct we want her to stop

turn around call her dad and go home

cause we're ahead of all the characters

except for Donald and now

and we know he's running somewhere

trying to get a cop to come to where

they don't know where yep

they just know he's around

so look how long the shot is

I would actually after we do this

I would love to find out what the timing is

is that a minute and a half

I don't know that's a long time from door to door

it's okay though because it worked

it works because you're the person who's walking

and we're watching you and it's fantastic

now those jeans were they fabulous

now they were a little high waisted

they be very hip today would they weren't hip

they were from like Jcpenney

this is all Jcpenney you know what I love is that this

now that the vest is off and the sweaters off

this is very Lauren Bacall a little bit yeah

it's lovely

there's a little sophistication that's creeped out

in this last little section

and this poor shirt as you know

goes through a bit of a it does it goes through

so I remember I remember ways

we got nice little butt in night for you

this was all that but this okay

from this point

you're gonna see the candy glass on the bottom left

um is when I get up to the room

I remember you said I need you to walk in

and then I need you to back up to this corner

and then I need you to back up to another corner

and I don't know what except fear drives you there

what am I gonna how what am I supposed to do

I didn't know uh huh and you know

you just it's funny how you it was very clear

it was geography yes

you have to go to point a to point B to point C

and then you have to go out the door

and you have to be standing at the thing

because that's when he's gonna

come out of the woodwork but you pulled it off

I pulled it off and I never had a problem

it's just beautifully lit it's evocative

it's terrifying

and you're taking your time as an actor

and you're taking your time because you don't mind see

you don't mind just hanging out

you don't know how many actors what am I doing here

just looking

it says if you discovering this for the first time

I love it I love watching this with you and then again

cute we know what's gonna happen

when you get to the top of the stairs question

how long can you hold it off

and moving forward up the stairs

this is a complicated shot to do because it's

he can't see nobody right
