Previously on SWAT...So, Gamble, one week on the job

and you already need a new vest.

Welcome to the LAPD.

My dad killed a cop. Doesn't matter that it was a decade ago.

I'm gonna prove I belong here.

Show Hicks you made the right call by bringing me back.

You forget my sister was coming today?

And how long is Nicole staying this time?

She and her boyfriend are fighting,

and she just needs some space to clear her head.

They broke up.

And she's gonna need more than a weekend.

A lot more. I mean, she's really great with the kids,

and she's got plenty of time on her hands, so...

Yeah, no, it's just...

I never thought I'd be happy

to see more of your sister.[chuckles]

Sorry, just texting with Thomas.

- As in your son? - I reached out

after you got his info.

We've been emailing, and now

we're making plans.

I'm Zoe.

Thomas.

I saw some videos of your band playing.

I think it's so cool that you play guitar.

Are you kidding? Don't you, like, defuse bombs

for a living?

I'd love to tell you about it.

My last patient's at 4:30, so I can

pick up Julia from ballet.

Do you want me to grab something for dinner?

WOMAN [over phone]: We should have enough leftover pasta.

I can whip up a salad to go with.

All right, just getting to clinic.

See you tonight. Love you.

Morning, Randy. How's it going?

Well, quiet so far.

But it is Wednesday, which means...

Prayer vigil.

Let's hope the protesters stay on their side

of the street this week.

MAN: - Dr. Scott? - Yes, can I help you?

[engine starts]

[tires screech]

Thanks for having me over.

I know you're busy with work and all.

Oh, stop it.

I'm never too busy.

Plus I wanted you here in person.

I listened to your demos last night.

You did? What'd you think?

That you definitely

didn't get your musical talent from me.

I loved them all.

The one, "From Scratch," that's my favorite so far.

Thanks. Yeah, the band's been putting in so much work.

Rehearsing, like, four times a week,

but I think it's finally paying off.

- Oh, yeah? - One of our videos

somehow went viral

and it caught the attention

of Lincoln Gate's manager.

I don't know who that is.

Probably means he's super cool.

It's not a he. Come on.[chuckles]

Lincoln Gate's an indie rock band.

Their manager asked us

to open for the northwest leg of their tour.

- That's amazing. - I know.

I mean, it's nothing fancy, a van and cheap motel

kind of thing, but... Wh-When would it start?

Well, we'd have to meet up with them in Portland in two weeks.

What about school? Doesn't that conflict with finals?

Yeah, that's the problem.

We'd be gone the last month of the semester.

I mean, the rest of the band is gonna defer.

I could, too, but...

we still need to raise $2,500

just to get us all up to Portland.

Hmm.

Would $500 get you started?

For real?

[laughs]: Yeah.

This is your dream, Thomas.

I am just honored to play a very small part

in helping it come true.

What's your Venmo?

Thanks for the ride today.

- Owe you one. - No sweat.

Oh, Miko's got you as his personal driver now?

No, it was just for today.

Amber needed to borrow my car.

Who's Amber?

Miko's new girlfriend.

What happened to Shannon?

Shannon was three weeks ago.

She had to check back into rehab.

Try to keep up, Gamble.

So, this Amber doesn't have a car?

It got impounded.

Parking tickets catch up with her?

You know, I keep telling her to pay for the damn things,

but now she can't pay for them

'cause she can't drive Uber without a car.

So she had to borrow my car to get

to her audition - this afternoon. - Okay.

I-I know I've only been here for two months, but...

seems like Miko got a type.

What you talking about?

She's the first actress I've ever dated.

I mean, you are clearly

attracted to drama with a capital "D."

What? No, I'm not.

TAN: You keep telling yourself that, Miko.

GAMBLE:There's got to be some Freudian reason behind it.

Nothing some therapy can't fix.

[phones chiming]

Shooting at a women's clinic in Highland Park.

[siren chirps]

I drive by this place most days.

There's always a handful of protesters

outside on the sidewalk.

They have a right to be there.

Hey, thanks for coming down.

Yeah, no problem. So, what do you need SWAT for?

You got an I.D. - on the shooter already? - No.

The only witness was a security guard.

He's on his way to Cedars with a GSW to the chest.

And no witnesses to the first shooting either.

- There was another shooting? - Yeah.

A nurse was shot and killed

earlier this morning

keying into a women's clinic downtown.

And you think the two incidents are connected?

Well, we got to wait for ballistics

to match up and make sure it's the shooter, but...

I've been on this job too long to believe in coincidences.

Abortion is a hot-button issue.

You think there's a shooter on the loose targeting providers?

That's why I called you guys in.

DEACON: How many clinics

like this one are in L.A.?

32, and we sent warnings to each of them,

but the thing is, a lot of the doctors

have admitting privileges

at hospitals

all across the city.

If there is a spree shooter, he's likely

already moving on to his next target.

HONDO: She's right.

Now that he got a taste for killing,

he's not gonna stop.

Not until someone stops him.

We get any leads on who this shooter could be?

Not yet. Tan's with Burrows at the hospital,

talking to the security guard who got shot.

Deacon and Gamble are in with the clinic director right now.

Uh, we've been doing a deep dive into the two victims.

The nurse that was shot at the clinic downtown

is Mia Edwards.

Only out of school a year.

POWELL: Second victim was Dr. Jeremy Scott.

Worked at the Well Woman Clinic for eight years.

Married, two young kids.

We find anything that connects the victims

besides their line of work?

We're working on it.

Maybe the shooter was picking randomly,

anyone who worked at one of these clinics.

Makes for a lot of possible targets.

Well, we shouldn't assume the killer's motive yet.

It might not be an antiabortion protester.

It could be an ex-employee

or a patient with an axe to grind.

We tried looking into patient records,

but we're hitting a wall with HIPAA.

TAN: I spoke with the security guard

before he went into surgery.

He described the suspect as a white male, five-11,

brown hair with a beard. Guard heard the shooter call out

Dr. Scott's name before he shot him.

So he knew him. The shooting was targeted, not random.

- Yeah. - Security guard say anything else?

Getaway vehicle was a black BMW 5 Series.

He didn't get a plate, but the back bumper was missing.

Already put out a BOLO.

All right, that's our only lead so far.

Let's hope we get a hit, but in the meantime,

keep digging into the victims.

If the shooter deliberately targeted them,

there must be some connection that we're just not seeing.

If we find it, it could lead us to the shooter.

On it.

All right, Tan, you and me,

let's head over to Dr. Scott's house

and talk to his wife, see if she has

any idea why her husband might have been targeted.

I've had pig's blood thrown at me,

harassing phone calls in the middle of the night.

A nurse I worked with had a brick thrown

through her car window while she was driving.

And you still get up every morning and go do your job.

I do.

Well, we all do.

Because our work is important.

You know, we get branded as baby killers,

but we do a lot more than just provide abortions.

We provide cancer screenings, ultrasounds, birth control.

Oh, Dr. Scott ran

a free prenatal clinic for undocumented women.

We're sorry for your loss.

And we are gonna do everything we can

to catch the person responsible.

Do any recent threats stand out?

Did Dr. Scott mention... being followed

- or harassed at all? - No.

I mean, all he could talk about for the last few weeks

was the vacation they were planning to Hawaii.

[phone buzzes]

Excuse me. Uh...

It's a message from Tan.

Your security guard gave a description of the shooter.

A white male, five-11, brown hair, beard.

That match anyone you can think of?

There's a guy that stands down the sidewalk,

away from the other protesters.

And he takes pictures of people

that go in and out of the clinic.

Any idea what he does with those photographs?

No.

And I don't think I want to know.

Hey, Miko, heard the latest about your love life.

[chuckles] What, is there a group chat I'm not a part of

where you all just gossip about me behind my back?

Who told you?

Seriously, though, think I found someone for you.

Ah.

Oh, okay.

I'm open. What's her story?

Name's Haley. Just moved in down the hall from me.

Project manager at a tech firm,

super nice, close to her family,

just organized a 5K for an animal shelter.

I think you would really like her.

GAMBLE: We might have a lead.

Apparently, a creeper matching the perp's description

was found taking photos of people

going in and out of the clinic.

What, you think he posts the images

- on some online forum? - Probably.

I was thinking if we run a reverse image search

for Mia Edwards and Jeremy Scott,

we might be able to find the website.

I'll get on it.

Powell tell you about her new neighbor Haley?

[chuckles] Although I have a feeling

she might be a little too stable for you.

[clicks tongue] Hey. I can do stable.

POWELL: Found something.

A website-- United for the Unborn.

It's a doxing site.

Posts home addresses,

phone numbers and photos of providers who work

in abortion clinics.

Including our two victims.

The site's run by a guy named John Clayton.

Minor rap sheet, few arrests for trespassing.

White, brown hair, beard. Fits our shooter's description.

ALFARO: No work address listed, but a residence

in South Pasadena.

I'll alert Hondo.

Gamble, grab Deacon.

We need to get over there now.

Here you go. Yeah! Good job.

- [chuckling]: - Yeah.

Yeah.[grunts]

Right.

Here we go.[car doors open and close]

[grunts] Good job.

Hey, run to Mommy, JD.

Run to Mommy. Show her how fast you are.

[laughs] Wow.

John Clayton?

Yes. Can I help you, officers?

Can you tell us where you were this morning

between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m.?

Right here. Doing yard work.

Can anyone else confirm that?

My wife. My three other kids.

DEACON: Do you mind if my officers speak to your wife?

[sighs] Of course.

- What's this about? - DEACON: Two medical professionals

were killed this morning-- Jeremy Scott and Mia Edwards.

They're both profiled on your website.

GAMBLE: United for the Unborn. That's you, right?

The two shootings that were - in the news this morning? - DEACON: That's correct.

You don't think I had something to do with that?

What, you-you think I killed them?

Did you?

No.

I don't condone violence of any kind,

let alone murder.

I believe that life is precious.

All life is precious.

Where do you stand on terrorizing people?

I don't terrorize people.

I call them out.

And if my tacticsget them

to think twice about their choices...

And shooting them,

that would certainly get them

to think twice, wouldn't it?

Got a look at their home security footage.

Alibi checks out. He was here all morning.

As I said.

All right.

You didn't pull the trigger,

but you're still putting targets on people's backs.

All I'm doing is standing up

for defenseless unborn children.

Being their voice.

What about the voices of the women you endanger?

The women whose bodies you think you can control?

Gamble.

What?

It's always guys like him.

DEACON: All right, that's enough.

Thank you for your time.

JOHN: I hope you catch your shooter.

I'll keep the victims in my prayers.

Drop it.

[phone buzzes]

Hondo, what's the latest?

We just spoke to Dr. Scott's wife.

She wasn't able to give us anything new.

She said he shielded her

from the hate mail and threats.

He didn't want to worry her.

Where are you at with the suspect?

John Clayton's not our guy.

His alibi checks out. He was with his family all morning.

BOLO just got a hit.

A black Beemer matching the shooter's car,

parked outside a gym in Echo Park.

DEACON: Hondo, we can be there

- in 15 minutes. - Nah, we're two minutes out.

No, we got it.

We'll let you know what we find, Deac.

DEACON: Roger that.

[siren wailing]

[tires screeching]

Missing bumper.

That's our shooter's ride.

Car's clear.

Hey. We're LAPD.

Did you see a man come through?

White, five-11, brown hair, beard?

Uh, a guy like that just came in a minute ago, asking for Zach.

- Where'd he go? - ALEX: I told him Zach had a class starting

in ten minutes.[gunshot]

[people screaming] Get outside now. Go, go.

22-David. We have an active shooter.

MadMat Boxing and Fitness in Echo Park.

[people screaming]

TAN: Come on. - Keep moving, keep moving. - Move, move, move.

Keep moving!

LAPD!

Drop the weapon!

- TAN: Put it down! - Cover!

[woman screams] HONDO: Tan, moving.

[Zach panting]

HONDO: We're LAPD. Where's the shooter?

He escaped through there.

All right, Tan, stay with him. Call a medic.

22-David. Got a male,

conscious, GSW to the shoulder.

Roll an R/A. Hey. You're gonna be okay.

[screams]

[screams]

HONDO: Move, move.

Stop right there!

[frightened chatter]

[shrieks]

[screams]

[tires screech]

[engine starts]

LAPD! Get out of the way! Move! Move! Stop the car!

Stop the car!

20-David. Armed suspect just carjacked a black Wrangler.

Heading west on Sunset.

You finding anything new on our suspect?

The Beemer's plates list the R.O. as a guy named Paul Hayes.

I ran him through our system. Guess what.

He's got a jacket.

That's him.

42-year-old accountant.

Two misdemeanor charges

for disorderly conduct, another for assault.

He can add two counts of murder and attempted to that now.

Rest of the team's already rolling.

They'll meet us at his house.

LAPD!

TAN: Give me a two.

[gunshot][door shatters]

Closet...

Two, two, two.

POWELL: Closet clear.

Bedroom clear.

- Kitchen clear. - Left side clear.

Definite signs of a struggle.

Hondo, got a body.

The bathroom's clear.

No pulse.

That's Paul's wife.

20-Squad, we're Code 4.

All these clothes... I'm guessing

she was fixing to leave him.

She's been dead for a few hours,

so she was probably his first victim.

Paul discovers his wife is leaving him.

He kills her, then goes and murders

a nurse and the doctor? How's that make sense?

I'm thinking we've been coming at this all wrong.

This might have nothing to do with abortion.

They've got two kids. No sign of them in the house.

Well, they weren't with Paul at the gym.

Well, this time of day,

hopefully they're in school.

We got to find 'em now. Let's go.

There are no records for either of the Hayes kids

in any LAUSD school.

Miko's checking private schools to see if we can find them.

Well, we better do it fast.

They're not gonna be safe until we do.

Can I ask you something?

Yeah. What's up?

When we were questioning John Clayton, our pro-lifer,

why did you shut me down like that?

You were taking it personally. It wasn't helping.

Part of our job is to stay neutral.

I know. I try to stay neutral on the job.

Racists, sexists, it's water off a duck's back.

Yeah, I've seen you handle things really well.

There are one or two things that just get under my skin,

and men telling women what to do is one of them.

Fair enough. I understand.

Do you, though?

I never see you get riled up ever.

I do.

I've just learned ways to manage it when I'm triggered.

Mind sharing some of that wisdom?

[sighs]

Empathy.

You find something in that person, however tiny,

you find something that allows you to see them as a human,

no matter who they are or what they've done

or what they believe in.

You think I agree with every suspect I encounter?

What about John Clayton?

Do you agree with him?

I mean, I know you're Catholic and all.

Gamble, my beliefs are my beliefs.

I do not let them interfere with how I do my job.

You need to learn to do the same.

[phone chimes]

You got to be kidding me.

Amber just got into a fender bender,

rear-ended somebody in my car.

Maybe you guys are right. Maybe I do have a type.

Look, I know what it's like

to be attracted to the wrong person.

Relationships are hard enough without the extra side of drama.

I'm not trying to make my life harder.

I actually like Amber. Thought we had something good going on.

You could be good for her,

but it doesn't sound like Amber's good for you.

Dating's supposed to be fun. You having fun?

Who are they?

Thomas's parents.

Diane, Josh, is everything okay?

Did you tell Thomas he should drop out of college?

Drop out? No.

Thomas said that he wanted to defer a semester.

You didn't encourage him?

DIANE: Why would you do that?

This tour with his band sounded like a huge opportunity.

Thomas thought, you know, it might open some doors and...

Doors that lead where?

Honey. [sighs]

Thomas needs to focus on his education

and finish what he started,

not chase some pie-in-the-sky dream of being a rock star.

I get that, but he's so talented, and...

Lots of people in L.A. are talented.

Most of them are waiting tables.

You were at his gig last month. You saw how amazing he is.

You both told me how proud you are of him.

Of course we're proud of him.

We're his parents.

We understand that you're trying to support Thomas,

but, really, Zoe,

this isn't your place.

There's your money back.

We would appreciate it

if you kept out of our family's decisions.

Of course.

Come on, honey.

So he finally did it.

The bastard killed her.

You don't sound surprised.

[sighs] Hannah started coming to my self-defense classes

maybe ten months ago.

I didn't notice the bruises at first.

She tried to cover them.

- Paul was abusing her? - Yeah.

She didn't talk about it at first.

Eventually, I got her to open up.

Paul would hit her when he was drunk,

which was pretty often.

Did Paul know she was coming to your classes?

I didn't think so.

She was always scared about

what would happen if he found out.

Any idea how the other two victims might factor into this?

Mia and Jeremy.

They're students in the same class as Hannah.

They both get harassed a lot in their line of work

and wanted to learn some moves to protect themselves.

Wait.

You just referred to them as victims.

They were both killed this morning.

Oh, God.

HONDO: Which is why we need your help

so no one else gets hurt.

Do you know why Paul would come after them?

Mia, Jeremy, and Hannah are...

...were really close.

Constantly texting, hanging out after class.

They were trying to get Hannah to leave Paul.

We all were.

The four of us had a group text.

Mainly to support Hannah, but...

we were all pushing her to get the hell out that marriage.

Hannah must have finally got

the courage to leave, and Paul caught on.

We never found Hannah's phone.

If Paul got it and read her texts?

That's why he's on a rampage.

He's killing anyone

who encouraged Hannah to leave.

Whoever he can blame for destroying

his marriage and his life.

You have to find Hannah's kids.

She said Paul threatened her all the time

that if she ever tried to leave,

he'd kill her and the kids.

We found the kids' school.

They go to Oakridge Academy in Alhambra.

Patrol's en route.

Gamble's contacting dispatch to warn the school.

What do you mean they're not here?!

They're safe, Mr. Hayes, I assure you.

But that's all I can tell you.

[sirens wailing]

Where the hell are my kids?!

Put the gun down.

Please.[gunshot]

Where are they?!

Principal's pretty shaken up, but he'll be okay.

You have any idea - where the kids are? - No.

But he did confirm that Hannah arranged for her sister

Jen Wilson to pull the kids out of school this morning.

It's got to be part of Hannah's

exit plan to get away from Paul.

But we have to assume that Paul has the same information now.

Yeah, I tried to call Jen and warn her, she didn't answer.

We have to get to them before Paul does.

Hannah's sister Jen isn't local.

She lives in Missouri, flew into L.A. last night.

Now, she's booked to fly back tomorrow along

- with Hannah and the two kids. - DEACON: My guess is,

Jen doesn't know that Hannah's dead.

Yeah, which means that if Paul has Hannah's phone,

he can text Hannah pretending to be Jen,

figure out where they are.

Hannah's laptop was in her packed suitcase.

There was nothing in any email or text

about how she planned to escape,

but then I discovered this.

DEACON: What are we looking at?

ALFARO: GPS tracking tags.

See, Hannah put one on her keys,

another one on her bike, but these two dots

are pinging at Starlight Suites downtown.

That's got to be the kids Gabby and Adam.

Hannah must've tagged their backpacks

- or something. - All right, let's move.

We'll call the hotel on the way.

♪ Too much, too soon...

You guys have fun in the pool?

Good.

We're gonna get you dried off.

Then...

we'll get down to the room

and wait for your mom.

She'll be here any minute.

We'll order room service

and have a sleepover.

- Sound like fun? - BOTH: Yeah!

And tomorrow...

we're gonna get on a big plane

and fly all the way to St. Louis where Grandma Susie

and Grandpa Ted are waiting for us.

Is Dad coming, too?

No, your dad's gonna stay in L.A.

Why is he here, then?

Hey, you guys want to play a game?

Your dad's "it," and we need to hide.

And we've got to do it really quiet and sneaky

so he doesn't find us, okay?

This way.

Oh, my God, he has a gun!

[screaming, clamoring]

Let's go.

Go, go, go, go, go.

It's okay.

[frightened chatter]

What do we got?

Guests just reported a man with a gun by the pool.

- Which way? - Rooftop.

Take the east stairwell or the main elevator.

- You get people out of here. - Yes, sir.

Deacon, Gamble, Miko, take the stairs.

Tan and Powell, you're with me.

Faster, guys.

We want to win, right?

Give me my kids!

30-David.

Suspect is in the east stairwell.

- Somewhere above us. - Copy. We're on the roof,

headed for the stairs.

Deacon, you push him up.

We'll cut him off from above.

Roger.

Come on, come on.

They're my kids, you bitch!

Hide in here.

Be super quiet.

I don't want to play anymore.

Oh, I know, it's okay.

I just need you to get under.

Can you do that for me?

[panting]

Where are the kids?

Where's Hannah?

Where's my sister, Paul?

Oh, God, please tell me she's okay.

[children crying]

No.

Hey, hey, it's okay.

It's okay, Dad's here.

Come on out now, come on.

You can come on out now, come on.

[Gabby screaming]

They're on this level, come on.

Deacon, ninth floor, north end of the hall.

Right behind you.

LAPD! Drop the weapon!

TAN: Let her go!

I need you to put that gun down, Paul!

[whimpering]

[elevator bell dings] Suspect's at the elevator

with three hostages.

They're not hostages!

They're my children!

[whimpering]

Moving.

Back up!

Get out of here!

You know we can't do that.

Hey, Paul, how about you let Jen and the kids go?

You know I can't do that.

You're not getting out of here, man.

We'll see.

[gasps]

Tan and Miko!

- They're headed down. - Roger.

Come here, I got you, I got you.

You're okay, let's go.

Everything's gonna be okay.

We just need to get out of here,

and we're gonna be okay, all right?

PAUL: Come on, come on, come on.

[elevator bell dings] Come here, come here, come here.

LAPD! Let them go!

Paul spotted us on the ground floor. He's headed back up.

There's no telling on which floor he'll stop.

We got to cover all exits. Tan?

You guys stay put, cover the ground floor.

Roger that.

I want Mom!

She's not here, but I am.

- No, I want Mom! - Damn it!

[Paul panting]

I just need to think!

[alarm ringing]

Hold.

He pulled the emergency stop.

He couldn't have got too far up.

Fourth floor. Fifth max.

All right, Deacon, Gamble, get to that elevator,

keep him talking.

Powell, you're with me.

[exhales, grunts]

All right, I'll stop the alarm.

Then you get him talking.

[panting]

[alarm stops]

Go ahead.

Paul, my name is Officer Gamble.

I'm with the LAPD.

I was hoping we could talk.

No, I don't want to talk to you.

Maintenance cut the elevator's power flex.

The car's not going anywhere.

Paul, you can't stay in there forever.

So why don't we figure out a solution together?

There's no fixing this!

It's too late!

Hondo,

Powell, what's your status?

Hondo's harnessing up right now.

Just need a couple more minutes.

I don't think we've got that much time.

We're moving as fast as we can.

Paul, you love your kids.

It's obvious. It's clear you'd do anything for them.

Yeah.

My dad was the same.

There was nothing he wouldn't do for me and my brothers.

Some days he'd pick us up

in the middle of the day from school and

tell the teachers we were going to a family funeral,

then take us to Disneyland.

Sounds like a great dad.

He was.

Till he did something stupid.

Made a mistake. A big one.

[breathing heavily]

What happened?

He killed someone.

Where is he now?

He's in prison.

What he did was wrong.

He knows it. He's paying for it.

You still talk to him?

Uh...

That's why I can't go to jail. I can't live without my kids.

And they can't live without me.

20-David. Almost there.

You got to keep him talking, just a few more seconds.

Paul, your kids are innocent.

Don't do anything you'll regret.

Stop trying to stall me.

I'm not. I promise.

Hannah promised, too.

To never leave me. But she lied!

Why are all women

such lying bitches?

Hannah lied to you.

It hurts when the people we love lie to us.

It feels like a betrayal. I get it.

Good.

I never meant to hurt her.

I didn't want this to happen.

I believe you.

[Paul yells]

[kids screaming]

[grunting]

It's over. It's over, Paul.

Give me your hands.

20-David.

Suspect in custody. Get these doors open.

Hey, guys, it's okay.

It's okay. We're gonna get you back to your aunt.

You're all right.

[tools rattling]

DEACON:Hey, it's okay. Come with me, come on.

There you go. I got you, come on.

GAMBLE: You're safe.

Get up. Come with me.

[officer speaks indistinctly]

[indistinct radio transmission]

Um...

[Jen sighs]

Those poor kids.

TAN: It's gonna be a long road for all of 'em.

Yeah.

Miko got you cleaning gear again?

I offered.

He had a couple phone calls to make.

Some girlfriend problems.

[both chuckle]

Plus I needed the distraction.

Everything okay?

Still in my head about what went down today.

I've never done a crisis negotiation with kids involved.

If something would've happened... Yeah, but it didn't.

That's thanks to you.

The situation you were in today was not easy.

And yet you were able to connect with him.

You made him feel like...

he wasn't alone.

And the moment he felt that,

he lowered his weapon.

I got to admit, I was a little surprised

that you chose to open up about your father like that.

I was surprised, too.

It's funny, I've been angry at him for so long.

It was nice to remember the happier memories.

Made me feel closer to him than I have in a while.

That right there?

That's the gift of real empathy.

When you can see the humanity in someone else,

it-it opens up a part of your own.

Yeah. I think you're right.

Nice work.

- Hey, Deac? - Yeah.

Sorry about pressing you earlier today

about your personal beliefs.

I know better than to bring politics into the workplace.

Don't sweat it.

I never want to alienate a teammate.

You know, she was before your time, but...

there was an officer on 20-Squad named Chris Alonso.

- Yeah, she's a legend. - Yeah.

Well, she was also one of the best SWAT officers

I've ever worked with.

But Chris and I,

we were miles apart on any issue you could think of.

But that didn't matter.

We always kicked ass together in the field.

And now...

...I'm looking forward to kicking more ass with you.

Hell yeah.

[chuckles] Damn.

You got a side hustle I don't know about, Powell?

[chuckles]

Thomas's band needed money

to get to Portland.

His parents think that I'm trying

to encourage him to quit college.

They gave me the cash back.

But you're thinking about giving the money back to him anyway.

I want to support his dreams.

And I don't understand

why they don't either.

He's a great kid.

This is a huge opportunity, and I...

I don't want him to miss out.

Powell, I know how relieved you were to learn that Thomas

has been taken care of all these years.

That he was brought up well,

he made it to college.

But I get it, he's your blood.

He's your kid.

You're just gonna have to trust

that they know what's best for him.

They raised him.

He calls them Mom and Dad.

They're his parents.

I'm not trying to be his parents.

I'm just trying to be his friend.

So where does that leave me?

A really tough spot.

If you want a lasting relationship with Thomas,

it's gonna take time.

And you're not only gonna have to earn his trust...

...but his family's trust, too.

[indistinct chatter]

GAMBLE: I hear you.

Hey. You ready to go?

I can drop you off at Amber's if you want.

Nah. We broke up.

I decided y'all might be right.

Figured I'll get someone less dramatic.

Think I'm gonna take Powell up on her offer

and see if she'll introduce me to her new neighbor.

That might be the smartest thing you've said.

Oh, excuse me, do you know where I can find

Sergeant David Kay?

- TAN:Deacon. - Yeah.

He should be on - his way out right now. - Thanks.

And you are?

His sister-in-law Nicole.

- You're Annie's sister? - Yeah.

I'm Miguel.

You're staying with Annie and Deacon, right?

Yeah, I'm their nanny, at least for now.

But I got to say, Costa Rica is calling my name.

Oh, I've never been.

Okay, lounging on the beach every day,

parties every night, it's a dream.

All right, you sold me. When are we going?

Nicole, what are you doing here? Where are the kids?

Oh, Annie went to go pick them up.

I wanted to get some sun while the oven was preheating,

and I was in the backyard for like five minutes.

When I got back to the house, it was locked with my phone

inside of it.

So, how did...? Never mind.

Is the oven still on?

Let's go.

Oh, uh, thanks for your help, by the way.

Sure thing. See you around.

Yeah.

I forget they call you Deacon.

[woman speaking indistinctly on TV]

[knocking at door]

POWELL: Thomas.

You okay?

Look, I'm sorry to just show up, Zoe,

I just-- I-I didn't know where else to go.

What's going on?

Well, my parents and I got into a huge fight.

They don't want me to go on tour

and think I'm throwing away my education.

Which I'm not. Like, they just... [scoffs]

...don't get how big a deal this is.

You know, they don't understand it the way you do.

That sounds really rough.

Look, I just need a place to stay until the tour starts up

in a couple weeks, so is it cool if I just crash here?

Uh...

I'm sorry, Thomas, you can't stay here.

I think you need to go home to your parents.

[chuckles] Why?

Out of everybody, I thought you would understand.

Your parents came to HQ and they told me that you were...

Hold on, what?

So all three of you were conspiring behind my back?

And making decisions about my life

without me?

No, that's not what this is.

No one is conspiring about anything...

I'm 19 years old, Zoe, okay?

I don't have to listen to what any of you have to say.

I can go if I want to.

You're right. You don't have to listen to me.

You don't have to listen to them.

But they love you

and they only want what's best for you, and...

I think it's worth hearing them out.

[sighs]

You know the irony in all this?

That song "From Scratch"? The one that you love so much?

I wrote that song about you.

About how great it's been to get to know you

after all these years.

Guess I was wrong about that.
