The paper’s editor-in-chief assigns Philippe

to a sensational but dangerous story.

The Vampires Affair

For two months now,

Inspector Durtal had been on the trail

of the mysterious criminal organisation,

The Vampires.

But having no news from Inspector Durtal,

we have reason to believe

he has fallen in the hands of the gang.

before setting off for Sologne.

The Vampires Affair

The next day, the fabulously wealthy American, Miss Simpson,

arrives at the chateau.

At the same time,

Philippe goes to the courthouse in Saint-Clément

to interview Judge Lechatellier, the examining judge.

Turned away by the judge, Philippe is driven to La Chesnaye.

"My young friend, I know nothing of the Vampires,

“only that everyone fears them.”

That evening, after dinner,

Philippe talks of nothing but the Vampires.

"It’s a gold-plated cigarette case

“fitted with priceless diamonds.”

That night...

Young man, you would be well-advised

not to get involved with the Vampires.

It will bring you bad luck.

In the American’s room.

While Philippe is lost in sleep filled with nightmares...

The next day.

Mrs Simpson’s cigarette case!

Shocked, the American screams:

“I've been robbed! All my jewels and money gone!”

Philippe has disappeared.

At the examining judge’s.

Doctor Nox

The search.

The examining judge prepares to arrest Doctor Nox.

Mrs Simpson is dead! Doctor Nox has disappeared!

The real Dr Nox, whose identity I assumed,

is dead, murdered six months ago.

Never cross my path again...

I am the Vampire.

That night, after wandering across the city’s rooftops,

the Vampire vanished into darkness.

This restoration was undertaken in 2014 by Gaumont

and the Centre National du Cinéma et de I'image animée,

within the aid plan for restoring and digitising the film heritage,

in collaboration with La Cinématheéque francaise.

The images have been scanned in 4K

from the original nitrate negative, a nitrate print

and a safety print for the missing frames.

The intertitles have been recreated from listings

preserved at the Bibliotheque du film.
