- Well, all the comforts
of a luxury liner, huh?

- We do have some comforts.

opportune moment, Commander.

The object was returned.
It's moving closer.

- How long has it been out there?

- Two hours.

Yesterday, it appeared for 15
minutes. Last night, one hour.

I sent the mini sub out.

They may reach it before
it gets out of range.

- A mile and a half.

Does it always move in the same direction?

- No. No pattern at all.

Five contacts we've made.

It's neither appeared nor
disappeared in the same direction.

You can rule out the

the conventional ones.

- You know of any other kind?

- No, but I thought you
might, some new development.

- I only wish we had a sub like that.

- I still say it's a whale
looking for a new home.

Whatever it is, it's not a whale,

but it does appear to be
looking for something.

- How can you be so
certain it's not a whale?

- Same way you're so certain
it's not a submarine.

Marine animals have been my
life's work. Let me show you.

Commander Wayne, this is Dr. Wilson.

- Commander Wayne.

- Dr. Wilson is our electronics expert.

One phase of our operation
here is the study

of communication and sonar
techniques of marine animals.

(animal calling)

That sound is the voices
of a school of porpoises.

We've recorded a dozen different kinds

of sea animals, including
three kinds of whales.

Their voices are all within the range

of our ultrasensitive
sensitive receivers out there.

Now, look at this.

- That sound signal is in a
100,000 cycle range, Commander.

- Ultrasonics, eh?

- Far beyond the range of the human ear.

- Can't hear it, we can only see it.

- From the mysterious object?

- Far beyond the range
of whales and porpoises.

Beyond the range of any marine
life that I'm familiar with.

- Now it'll move away.

It seems to stop transmitting
before it moves out

of sonar range.

- The object has moved
away again, Dr. LaSatier.

They couldn't get close
enough to get a picture.

- Maddox would be pretty
disappointed if they didn't.

He and our photographer
are out in the mini sub.

I was determined to get
pictures of that thing.

is moving away from us.

I think it's some kind of submarine.

Whatever it is, it's huge.

- He knows he can't do that.

the extra tanks, like I said.

Another two weeks to
wind up this operation,

then we're on our way to Miami.

- Got everything all
figured out, haven't you?

- I only got a couple
of long shots, Doctor.

Unfortunately, we weren't able
to move in for a close up.

- I wanna see them as soon
as they're outta the soup.

A lot of people don't

- 70% of the Earth's
surface is covered by ocean.

And we know less about
it than we do the surface

of the Moon.

Every day, our crew brings
in some new form of life

or plant, like that, to be
studied and classified.

Forms of life in the sea are endless.

- You're really serious
about this, aren't you?

- It's a serious problem.

There's enough food in the ocean to supply

the world's population forever.

The sea is a perpetual food factory.

And the specimen is under
the microscope, Commander.

- Oh.

Well, after a tour of
duty aboard a submarine

for a few years, a man
remembers that there

are a lot more interesting
things to study than seaweed.

- Like women, for instance.

- Yes, if they look like you.

- And I suppose I'm just the woman

you've been searching for.

- You have a few of the qualifications.

- (laughs) Why don't

or the indirect approach, you know,

- Well, somebody must have

have developed some new undersea craft?

- This isn't Russian.

Doesn't look like a submarine at all,

in the sense that we use the word.

- Well, what then?

I'm gonna send a communique
to Washington and request

that a naval unit be sent to this area.

Meantime, I suggest that you
terminate your research program

until we can determine what this object

is and what it's doing here.

- Aren't you jumping

to some rather hasty
conclusions, Commander?

We have no particular reason to suspect

that this object represents danger.

- Maybe Commander Wayne is
used to making hasty decisions.

- Hello, Maddox.

I know you do what you want to do, Doctor,

but I still think this is a
matter for military authorities.

- Commander, I have no
objection to your sending

a communique to the Navy Department.

You can make any request you wish.

However, in as much

as this is a private civilian operation

under my supervision, I do
think it's up to me to decide

on its termination.

- Not just the same as
giving orders aboard

the Starfish, is it, Commander?

- I was thinking about ultrasonic

We're loaded with chemicals and gases

which could become irradiated
by high frequency sound waves.

- Sound emergency, seal
all compartments, Maddox.

(alarm wailing)

This is not a drill. Go to your
emergency stations at once.

(bird cawing)

- Must be 50 feet in diameter.

(rumbling)

to the area of the unknown
object to investigate.

I'd say it's an instrument
package, Commander,

but don't ask me what it's for.

- Possibly something to do with
the ship's guidance system.

- Or power plant, or
observation equipment,

or who knows what?

- Well, there's one way
to find out. Cut it open.

- Now, Listen, Doctor, you're a scientist.

I understand your curiosity,

but I don't understand your logic.

Now this ship must have
traveled through space millions

of miles to get to this planet,

obviously with a very good reason.

We're dealing with
something totally alien.

That capsule, as he said,

might contain just instruments

or something simple like that.

On the other hand,

it might contain something
quite beyond the realm

of our understanding.

I'm fairly certain there're
about two dozen more

aboard that ship.

- That's exactly the point, Commander.

We're here to explore the unknown.

I was sent out here with
the authority to take

over this project, if it became necessary.

Now I don't want to
exercise that authority.

But until I hear from the Navy department,

nobody aboard this
installation is gonna tamper

with that object.

some kind of unknown disease.

plague that's threatening

to wipe out its own civilization?

- I don't know.

I've prepared a serum that
might help but I don't know.

If it is contagious,

that one creature could
start a major epidemic.

- Well, imagine what a dozen might do.

Have you found what you're looking for?

- Mm-hm.

- I don't know. Roughly,
I'd say eight hours.

creature from another world?

of any other world except our own.

men on totally alien planets.

a creature from one of those planets.

there's a civilization of beings equal to,

if not superior to ourselves.

We never knew that for certain before.

We also know that somehow
we have to find a way

to communicate with those beings,

if we ever encounter them again.

That's what you have to tell 'em

at the press conference, Doc,

that you are the one
man with the knowledge

and experience to find that way.

That you are ready to tackle

the most important research
program of our age.

- Commander, don't you think we're being

keeping the President waiting?
