what I already have, a perfect family, the perfect job,

I've been admired and respecte, and even envied for it.

Now look at me.

How in God's name did I get here?

♪ Happy birthday to you

♪ Happy birthday to you

♪ Happy...

Oh wait, hold on, where is Chad?

Probably in his room.

Okay, you know what? Don't open anything, okay?

My candles are melting.

We can get new candles for the cake.

- Don't worry Mom, I got it. - Okay.

So, you guys, Chad had turned into a full-fledged teenager.

You may have noticed that you haven't seen him much

on 8 Passengers lately, and that is because he's been

checking out of family activities.

Come.

Chad?

Honey?

Hey, Chad, honey.

Hey. Can you take the headphones off?

- Hi. - Hey.

Why aren't you downstairs?

I'm not into the whole party thing.

Well, it's Russell's birthday.

You need to show him your love and respect.

Okay, you know what? Let's... just cut.

Hey, honey, this vlogging is our livelihood,

you know that. And as part of this--

hey, can you look at me? Thank you.

As a member of this family, you need to do your part to increase

the viewership, right? And our viewers wanna see the Chad

they know and love, not Mopey McMopersons.

- Mm-hmm. - Okay? So, what do you say?

Come on, you know how much Russell adores you.

He would be crushed if you weren't there.

All right.

There you go.

Okay. Oh, I'll take that. Thank you so much.

Happy birthday to you!

All right, blow them out!

Oh, my gosh, you guys, I love having kids.

Aw.

Aw.

And obviously YouTube viewers love the Franke family.

This week, the streaming channel announced that 8 Passengers,

Ruby Franke's parenting vlog about herself and her family

has now surpassed 2.5 million viewers.

What looks like an ordinary house in a middle-class

Utah neighborhood is actually home to this

increasingly famous family.

It's officially summer, and you know what that means?

Barbecue season.

Pass!

And pool parties. Woo-hoo!

Honestly, it was all Ruby's idea. I was worried about

the constant filming, but...

you kinda get used to it.

I had no idea that when I started posting

these videos, that it would turn into this... thing.

The thing it turned into was a parenting channel,

that offered families a look at how Ruby and Kevin

raise their children.

Okay, Shari, breakfast.

Anything but omelets.

Chad, Chad, garbage.

- Got it. - Abby, laundry.

No problem.

Okay, and Eve, you're gonna dust the shelves.

- Okay. - Okay.

Uh, Julie, kitchen clean up.

Again? Why can't I make breakfast?

Because the last time you did, nobody wanted to eat it.

Okay, Russell, recycling.

- Sure. - Great.

This household is not a democracy.

Tough love or loving mother?

Either way, millions of viewers agree,

8 Passengers is worth the watc.

For Channel 8 News Utah, I'm Morgan Riley.

- They're cute, aren't they? - Oh, delightful.

The model Christian family.

And Kevin is a professor at the university, right?

Mm-hmm.

Wait, aren't you on the church Christmas committee?

I mean, the Frankes would be perfect

for the family that lights the tree.

Well, between you and me, they're not perfect.

Ruby's such a stickler for perfection and she would

never show it but I know for a fact that they've been

having some problems with their eldest son, Chad.

Teenagers.

Hmm. Apparently he's a handful.

Hmm. As you know, my schedule is tight,

but I would like to offer my help.

Would you like me to make an introduction?

I think they would be grateful.

I'll call her right away.

Kids all looked so great today. I cannot imagine

how much more attention they're gonna get in school.

Yeah, I'm not so crazy about that.

Oh, come on, it's the local news. They can handle it.

What are we gonna do about Chad?

What do you mean?

He was so grumpy at Russell's birthday.

Oh, I wouldn't worry too much.

Boys will be boys.

Hmm, true, but...

hmm, I do worry that his acting out is gonna cause bigger

problems in the future.

What's this?

Oh, I don't know, just a little something

for the best wife in the world.

Is this not more of a gift for you?

Uh-uh.

- Kevin? - Mm-hmm?

Kevin, I'm serious, we need to talk about this.

Okay.

I spoke to Darcy Bastow today and she mentioned

Jodi Hildebrandt.

You know, the family therapist?

You've always done such a great job with the kids.

Are you sure we really need a therapist?

I think Chad might need some expert help. And Jodi is super

popular in the community, and so hard to get in with,

but Darcy said she'd put in a good word for us.

Uh, well, if you think it'll help, what have we got to lose?

Great.

- Ruby? - Yeah, I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

It's paradise, isn't it?

Are you building a home there?

Well, actually, it's a potential spot

for my Garden of Eden.

A place where I can do God's work in peace.

Come on, let's go talk outside.

- Thank you for having me. - Of course.

I pride myself on making time for children in need.

Well, it sure is gonna be nice to have somebody

to talk to about Chad's antics.

Ruby, clearly you're ahead of the game when it comes

to raising children. But in my experience, I have found that

the parents need to help themselves before they can help

their kids. That oftentimes, when children act up,

it's usually because something's off balance in the home.

Would you say that Kevin is a good role model?

Oh, the kids worship him.

Is he virtuous?

With all those raging hormones, young men need a steady rudder.

- Yeah. Yeah, absolutely. - Hmm.

So, he's an attentive father who puts the welfare

of his family first?

Actually...

lately I have been having some trouble getting him to focus

on Chad's issues.

And why is that?

He seems to be more interested in...

Sex? Don't be ashamed. This is a very common problem

with married men in our community. How many times a day

do you think your husband thinks about sex?

Oh, I don't know, no more than the average male I --

Be careful. Don't downplay it. Sexual addiction

is toxic within the home.

Addiction? I've never thought of it like that.

A supersized libido can lead to perversions.

And in the eyes of the church...

Right. Right, I think I see where you're going with that.

You know what? I have a men's therapy group that would be

fantastic for Kevin. It's Kevin, right?

- Yeah. - It's an open forum for men

to speak freely on men's issues. It's a great group of men.

My counseling has saved a lot of marriages. But don't take

my word for it. Tell Kevin to speak to the church elders.

They endorse me.

I thought the counseling was for Chad, not for me?

I know. I wasn't keen on it at first either, but then,

I had to be honest with myself and admit that

our relationship is not perfect.

Because of me?

No. Not just because of you.

But I do really think that we could both benefit

from this therapy.

Do you know how much Jodi charges for those

men's sessions? It's almost double what we're paying

for Chad, and with Shari starting college --

Honey, we're doing okay. We can afford it.

And money aside, Jodi is very insightful.

She's not preachy at all, and I just think

if you gave her a chance, you'd really like her. Plus...

it would mean a lot to me.

Okay, now this is spot on. Stitching looks very elegant.

Sorry you had to tell the manufacturer to do it again.

I'm your business manager. It's my job

to make you happy. - Hmm.

What do you think about the hats?

Hats. Um, hang on, I'm looking for them.

Personally, I think they should be red instead of--

Lindsey, sorry, I have to call you back.

Um, so I just got a text message from Eve's teacher.

Eve forgot her lunch today, and could I bring it to her?

I know it makes her teacher uncomfortable for Eve to go

hungry, and it would ease her discomfort if I could just

come to the school with a lunch. But um, I...

I responded and said Eve is responsible for making

her lunches in the morning, and she told me she did.

Eve is responsible for making her lunches in the morning,

and she told me she did.

So, the natural outcome is Eve will need to go hungry.

Hey.

- How's is going? - Good.

Just putting final touches on this episode

and I can upload it. - I don't mean to interrupt

but I wanted to say that if it's that important to you,

I'll do it. I'll try the therapy.

Thank you.

I really don't think you'll regret it.

Don't stay up too late.

So, the natural outcome is, Eve will need to go hungry.

The truth is, it was only an hour before

school let out. Eve would come home and eat all she wanted.

Even so, I can't say I didn't feel bad for her. I did.

No parent ever wants to see their child suffer.

But I know Eve will be all the stronger for it.

I'm proud of my decision

and I think Jodi would be, too.

She's really helping with Chad.

Which is good.

Because Jodi is right,

we wouldn't want to jeopardize the 8 Passengers brand.

See, I know what I'm doing is wrong, but I...

I just can't seem to stop.

Addictions are compulsive.

You need to focus on not putting yourself in a position

where you'll be tempted.

But I can't help myself, right? I have,

I have urges.

Your self-pollution is a violation of the church's

law of chastity. Now, say it.

Uh...

I want you to say because I don't think you believe it.

Um...

my impure thoughts are a danger to my family.

That's right, Braxton. Speak the truth.

Live in truth. No more living in distortion.

Kevin? I know this is your first session,

but are you ready to talk about your sex addiction?

Uh... sex addiction?

I, don't uh, mean... it's not an addiction.

There can be no healing with hubris and self-deceit.

I don't mean to be difficult but I, I don't think this

is a problem for my wife and I. - Is that right?

So, your lustfulness doesn't impact your marriage?

Not that I'm aware of.

Your wife is hurting. Were you aware of that?

No.

She cries about it in private.

She told you that?

I'm only telling you so you understand

how you're affecting her.

I mean, who would do that? And how did they get my number?

Is this the first time you've gotten a text like that?

No. You don't think they'd come to my house, do you?

It's probably just jealous fans.

You know, if everybody had your parenting skills,

they wouldn't all be watching 8 Passengers.

You think so?

Numbers don't lie.

So um, how's Kevin doing?

Good. Yeah, he says the men's sessions are going well.

Are they not?

I'm sorry to say but I think your husband's manipulating you.

Really?

He's good at projecting that he's being receptive

but on the inside, he's not being truthful.

Why else would he tell you it's been going good?

Yeah um, I guess I could see that.

When he comes home tonight, challenge him to have a real

conversation about your feelings. About the lust,

about the emotional toll it's taking on you. About the pain

he's inflicting. Don't let him off the hook.

I have to go. Be firm.

Sorry, I woke you.

Oh, it's okay. How was the meeting?

To be honest,

I don't know why I'm there.

Jodi said you might say that.

Did she call you?

Should she be telling you what's going on

in these meetings?

I mean, I thought it was a bit weird at first

but we're married so...

It's unconventional to me.

Are you hiding something?

No.

Can we have an honest conversation about

our relationship?

Of course. What's wrong?

Um...

it feels like you'd rather have sex than talk about our son.

Is this about the sexy lingerie?

No, it's not just that.

Making love should be about romance.

Right? Not lust. Lust...

it doesn't feel loving to me.

Ruby, I had no idea.

I just wanna feel like you love me.

Oh. I love you.

More than anything in the world.

I'm sorry that my behavior made you feel that way.

I would do anything to make this marriage work.

- Okay. - Okay.

Yeah. Thank you.

Huh? Do you hear that?

What is that?

Somebody's in the house.

Do you think it could be that person sending those texts?

Russell?

What on earth are you doing?

Chad woke me up and told me to hurry up and pack

because we're leaving for California, right now.

Oh, buddy, not tonight. Why don't you come upstairs

and we'll put your suitcase away?

You think this is funny?

Yeah, I think it's pretty funny.

You got Russell up in the middle of the night?

He has school in the morning. You have school in the morning.

What's the big deal? It's a joke.

Okay, well pal, joke's on you. You can get your blanky

and get your pillow and you can get out.

Wait, what, where am I supposed to go?

I don't care.

You have tormented Russell for the last time.

You can sleep anywhere in the house but here.

Okay? Get out.

Uh...

Go, now.

What?

Nothing.

It's a big day. Shari is coming home for the first

time after being away at college. We're all so excited

to see her. There she is! My first born.

Wait a minute, is that?

Yeah, laundry. What? At school we don't do it every day

like you do, Mom.

There's another one in the truck.

But it's so good to have her home.

It's a good thing my daughter can depend on the kindness

of her mother.

We missed you.

And how's the dorm?

- Well, my room is small. - Mm-hmm.

Smaller than my room here. But I decorated it nicely.

I'm just happy to be back in my bedroom.

Hmm, I've been sleeping in the beanbag for like,

how many months now?

I don't think our viewers know that.

Wait, what happened?

Okay, I'll tell you why I lost my bedroom. So,

basically I woke Russell up in the middle of the night.

I told him we were going to California. He got his bags

packed and put on his sunglasses and everything.

You think it's funny?

Because if you still think it's funny maybe you

don't deserve your bedroom back.

Definitely not funny.

Can we cut?

Okay, you know full well that we gave you the option to sleep

anywhere in the house. You chose the beanbag.

I talked to Lindsey today.

She said viewership has decreased

over the last few months.

Oh, it's probably just seasonal.

Yeah, maybe.

I don't know, I worry that it has something to do with

the negative comments.

Oh...

What is this?

For my queen.

Oh.

This is nice.

You said you wanted romance.

Mom! Mom! Hurry up!

What? Oh, my gosh, Shari,

I thought the house was on fire.

- You've gotta see this. - What is this?

Well someone, someone started a petition to have you

investigated by Child Services for being a bad mother.

Are you kidding?

No, it's got over 12,000 signatures.

No, no, no, no, this is not real. This cannot be real.

No, it's real, Mom. What did you do?

Me? What did I do?

I loved my family. That's what I did.

You know that nothing is more important to me in the world

than you guys, right?

What's going on?

I just... apparently they hate me now.

- Who hates you? - The internet.

Well, I'll check its legal merit, but still, it's not good.

This is not good, not good. No, it's a disaster actually.

This is gonna ruin me. This is going to destroy

everything I built!

Hey.

Can I talk to you for a second?

Yeah, of course. Do you wanna wait in the car?

I just wanna give you an update.

Okay. Nothing bad, I hope?

Oh, no. Chad's making great progress.

That's a relief.

Well, he wouldn't have come this far this fast

without your diligence.

Thank you. We've been working on his focus.

You know, I want him to feel like he can be more serious,

rather than always the class clown.

Right. Well, I only have an hour per session with him

and I think we could achieve greater results

if Chad comes in more than two times a week.

It's just something to think about.

Yeah, sure. Um, let me talk to Kevin. Okay?

It's just, it's the money thing. Our viewership has decreased.

- Hmm. - Since that whole silly

petition campaign and it's...

and thank heavens nothing ever came of it.

Can I be candid?

Of course.

Your show, 8 Passengers, is terrific,

but it's more of an entertainment piece.

I see bigger things in your future.

- Like what? - Well, you have great values.

You have a knack for helping people. And you have the magic.

Oh, my gosh, I...

I don't know what to say. That means so much coming from you.

Well, you should think about a career in mental health.

I could not do that.

I mean, can I do that? I didn't, I didn't go to college.

God gifted you a talent. It would be a sin

to let it go to waste.

Hello, Passengers. I am sure you're all wondering

what's going on, so let me catch you up.

Shari is thrilled with college. Chad moved out and got a job.

And Eve is getting baptized.

My kids are growing up.

And their lives are getting busy. So, I wanted you to know

that I'm gonna be cutting back on the vlogging.

My original motive for vlogging was to create a support system

for families, for mothers, to see an example of what

a healthy mom looks like. But lately,

it's... been discouraging because my content has been

twisted and distorted.

Luckily, God has taken this painful moment in my life

and turned lemons into lemonade. He has given me a new avenue,

which has been just an absolute blessing in my life.

And my family's. I'm gonna be starting some new, exciting

mental health work, which I will get into at a later date.

For now, I just wanted to wish you all a merry Christmas

and a blessed and happy new year.

Oh, I am beat. How did that sound?

Sounds like I'm gonna have to get a second job.

Shari, can you get my phone?

Yeah, I mean, we've talked about this.

I have to be expanding my horizons. The kids don't

wanna be in the vlog anymore.

Ruby, then we're gonna have to start tightening

our belts around here.

It's Jodi.

Aunt... Jodi.

When did we start calling her Aunt Jodi?

Hello. How was your Christmas?

Peacefully observant. And you?

Overwhelming. But the kids had a terrific Christmas.

Terrific, as in overabundance?

Let's just say Santa brought a lot of presents.

Hmm. Well, indulgence is the devil's candy.

Yeah. Um, you know, I wanted to thank you for your

emotional support with all the social media scrutiny

over 8 Passengers.

Oh, snowflakes. Every one of them.

I was calling you to see if you're all set

for your first ConneXions video?

Absolutely. Yep.

Couldn't have asked for a better Christmas present.

Aside from the love of God.

Well, I mean, of course. That goes without saying.

Well, good. I'll see you at my house on Tuesday.

Okay.

I'll take out the garbage.

No, it is not your job.

These kids are spoiled rotten.

You cannot indulge in materialism all day

and not do your chores. So, you're gonna pick up this

garbage, you're gonna put it in the trash, or every single

one of your presents is going back to the store.

Ruby, it's Christmas.

Exactly. There's no better time for him to learn about

responsibility. Okay? I want my kids to live in the truth.

Don't you, Kevin?

You sound like Jodi.

Thank you.

She's an inspiration and she approves of my parenting

methods, unlike those idiots on the internet.

I know this petition issue has been rough on you.

But you've always been obsessed with being liked.

I don't care about being liked, I care about being right.

Please just take it slow with this Jodi project.

- I don't wanna see you get hurt. - Oh, stop. Stop!

- Okay, bud? - Yeah.

I think that first part was a great set up,

but on the next segment, we need to go deeper.

Oh, deeper how?

Hmm, we'll feel it out. Speak from your gut.

You're doing great.

- Ready? - Yep.

All right.

Three, two, one. Welcome back to ConneXions.

We were talking about children and entitlement, something Ruby

has a lot of experience with, right, Ruby?

You bet.

Uh, because of 8 Passengers, I felt like my kids were

becoming entitled and swayed by the opinions of others.

And what kind of opinions?

Um, just some negative feedback on my parenting

choices. But I felt like I needed to teach my kids

that the opinions of others did not matter.

That I was their mother. And that this is where I stood.

So, your viewership disapproved of you?

No, is that why you're not posting your vlog anymore?

No, I'm, I still am, just not as much.

Well, I guess that disapproval had a big impact on you.

No, it was like you said,

it was, I was losing my family to distortion.

Well, I'd imagine if you no longer had subscribers--

I have subscribers.

Let's be honest. You were receiving hate mail.

Your children were out of control. You were failing.

I was making millions with my channel.

But I backed off because my kids were being hurt.

Hurt by entitlement.

And now?

They're seeing truth and loving it.

You saved them.

Yes.

I did.

And not just them. Now you've been liberated

by the truth yourself, right?

Yeah, I guess that's true.

Truth. If you're interested in finding truth in your life,

we still have tickets left for our family conference

in Phoenix next weekend. And just go to our website

and order now. We hope to see you there.

You were spectacular.

- So sincere. - You caught me off guard.

Well, you rolled with it. You're so comfortable on camera.

I knew you'd be perfect as my co-host.

I don't know, I feel like I came off as unlikeable.

Oh, not at all.

If we do this, you're gonna have to trust me.

- Okay. - Okay.

Jodi?

Have you seen the response to our first video?

Oh! The comments are through the roof.

Did they like us?

- They love us! - Who is that?

It's the middle of the night for crying out loud.

It's Jodi. Just go back to sleep.

I'm sorry to interrupt.

I forget other people have families.

Oh no, it's fine. Don't worry about it.

Logging on to the site right now.

This proves we're delivering the message.

Now we need to get some of your 8 Passengers subscribers

to sign up for memberships.

Of course, of course. Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever I can do

to help. Um... this is so exciting!

Yeah! I mean it must be so gratifying to know that

you're finally accomplishing something important.

Wasn't Jodi's speech inspiring?

She is so motivating. I'm tingling.

I mean, no wonder she has so many followers.

I'm surprised Connie or Braxton aren't here.

Matter of fact, he missed the last group session.

Have any of you heard from them?

Jodi Hildebrandt's a liar!

You're a fraud! Everything you do, it's a lie!

She ruined my life. She's gonna ruin yours!

You're not a therapist!

You should be in jail for what you've done!

You don't help families, you hurt them!

Get out from the shadows!

I'm... I'm gonna go see if Jodi's okay.

Who was that?

That was James Pratt. He's a little unstable.

After his divorce, he was ex-communicated.

Apparently he sexually abused the kids.

I thought he moved to Idaho.

- I need to talk to you. - Yeah.

Alone. I'm so sorry. Excuse us.

That really set Jodi off and she was not in a good place

to begin with. - About what?

She thinks she's being haunted by shadow figures at night.

Kevin, I'm serious, she's scared and she does not wanna be alone.

When did this start?

Last week, I guess. She doesn't remember.

I mean, she's been working day and night.

I feel so bad for her, you know?

I can tell she's pushing through but it's getting to her.

Shouldn't she reach out to the church?

She's got plenty of support.

She says she only trusts me.

Okay. Uh, how can we help?

She wants to come live with us.

In our house?

Just for a short while.

I don't feel comfortable with that.

- What about the kids? - The kids will be fine.

She can stay in Shari's room. There's plenty of space.

Frankly, Ruby, I think Jodi needs therapy.

Why are you being so insensitive to somebody in need?

I'm not. But level with me.

Why does she have to come to our house?

What is she so afraid of?

She thinks she's being possessed. By Satan.

Mommy, I'm hungry.

No, honey, you know the deal, okay? Auntie Jodi needs quiet.

You guys will eat after, okay? Go back to the family room.

Oy.

Those migraines seem to be getting worse.

Oh, it's like Satan is driving a stake through my head.

I'm gonna get a cold compress.

Oh, no, no, no, don't. I'll be okay. Sit.

I talked to Susan today and she said ConneXions has seen

a large uptick in membership since the conference.

Congratulations.

Yeah. I knew it would only be a matter of time.

We should eat.

Lord, thank you for this meal, and for showing

my dear friend, Ruby, the path to my door when she was in need.

Amen.

Nice.

Daddy, I'm hungry.

Yeah, Dad, how much longer we gonna do this?

Until Auntie Jodi feels better, okay?

- I wanna try. - No, it's mine.

- Hey, hey guys-- - I'm younger!

- I'm older! - Cut it out.

- Russell, Eve. - I'm shorter!

You had it the whole, entire time.

- No. - I'm younger!

Hey guys, guys, cut it out. Cut it out.

Lights are out!

Great. Now how am I gonna do my homework?

Everything's gonna be okay, guys. Russell, Eve,

not in the dark.

- No! - Russell, Eve.

Don't panic, it's probably just a breaker.

Come with me, guys.

I'll check the electrical box.

Thank you. Oh no, Russell, we don't

do that in here. Eve, Eve, don't chase

your brother, okay? - Mom, where's my tablet?

- I don't know. - I'm in charge!

Keep it down. Guys, guys.

Can I have some lasagna?

- I'm really hungry. - You cannot. Eve.

You can't catch me! You can't catch me!

Guys, stop. Guys, are you listening to me?

You've gotta keep it down. Get outta here, okay?

Go back in the family room, please.

Satan out!

Ah!

Kevin. Kevin?

Come now, Kevin.

- What the hell was that? - Shh! Language.

Don't language me. This woman just stabbed herself

in front of our children.

It was clearly a cry for help.

I don't care what it was. She has to leave.

She's not ready.

Ruby? Ruby? He's coming for me.

I am not sending her out into the world in that state.

Where are you going?

Um, I'm staying up in Jodi's room.

- What? Why? - Well, her episodes

are becoming more frequent, like every hour, and I think

it's just better if I stay up there to help her through them.

You're gonna sleep in the same bed?

Yeah. Yeah, it's a queen size.

There's plenty of space for both of us.

Ruby, you look exhausted.

You haven't posted on 8 Passengers in a while.

The kids are being neglected. You're spending all of your time

with Jodi. - Because she needs me.

Meanwhile, this house is being turned upside down.

Okay.

There's something I haven't told you.

I've been having heavenly visions.

Of what?

The angel of the Lord came to me.

He spoke to me.

And he told me that we have work to do for God.

You don't believe me?

No. No, of course I do.

Well, this work that the angel spoke of,

you are a part of it, too. This whole family is.

And none of it would have happened if it wasn't for Jodi.

Well then, we have been blessed.

Yeah.

Your mother misses you. You should come home more often.

I know but I've been busy with recitals and midterms.

Midterms have been over for a month.

What's up? You and your mother used to be so close.

I know.

Promise you won't tell Mom?

But sometimes I feel...

weird there.

Like, home isn't home anymore.

Jodi.

Yeah.

I tried but I don't agree with her idea of therapy.

Leaves me spiritually drained.

Maybe it'll make more sense in a few years.

After you've had a relationship.

Do you feel like she's helping you?

She has, with some of the problems your mother and I

were having, but, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't

have my doubts about Jodi.

Does Mom have doubts?

- Kevin. - Braxton.

- Oh, hey. - Hi.

It's been a while. Hey.

You remember my daughter, Shari?

- Yeah. Hi. - Hi, Mr. Young.

I was just leaving.

- Oh. - I'll see ya later, Dad.

Love you, kid.

- Have a seat. - Yeah.

I thought I would have run into you

at the therapy conference.

Yeah, well, um...

Jodi's not our therapist anymore

so there's no reason to go to Phoenix.

Really?

I thought you were a disciple. What happened?

I mean, you know how it is, right?

Look, she's a very powerful voice in the church.

I, I'd rather not say.

Trust me,

you have my confidence.

I have my own doubts about Jodi's methods.

For real?

Uh... okay, well,

it started about six months ago. Jodi approached Connie

and asked her if she could move in with us.

Said that she was, and I wanna get this right here,

seeing shadow figures at night.

- Are you serious? - Yeah.

So, she moves in, starts turning the house upside down.

Connie's with her every minute. I, I don't stand a chance.

The next thing I know, the two of them are--

Sleeping in the same bedroom.

Wait, yeah, how do you know that?

She's living with us right now.

The same stuff is happening.

It's about to get worse.

I think that her intent was to turn Connie against me

to wreck our marriage. I mean, she uses the faith to brainwash

people. And we're not the only ones. I heard stories of other

couples that she treated, some of them lost their jobs

and went bankrupt because of her. That's...

that's how cults are started.

- She's a cult leader. - Well, I have to get her out.

Honestly, if it's not too late, my advice to you

is just stay on Jodi's good side because if you cross her,

she's only gonna make it worse for you.

Oh, that's healing nicely.

- Oh, it's still very painful. - Yeah.

Oh, almost out of peroxide.

I'll get Kevin to pick up some more.

Your husband doesn't seem to be taking any of this

very seriously. Our work here, your marriage.

I thought he was really trying.

No, he's not. I wouldn't be in this state if he was.

All he was asked to do was to keep the children quiet.

- He couldn't even do that. - I, I know

that he is truly sorry about that.

No, he's just so darn good at manipulating you.

You don't see it, do you?

His mind couldn't be further away from you or this family.

If you wanna save your marriage, you need to stop defending him.

Okay. So, what do I do?

We need to take him out of his comfort zone.

I need to talk to you about Jodi.

Good. 'Cause I need to talk to you about Jodi.

I ran into Braxton Young today and he had some...

negative things to say about her.

Such as?

She's done this before. She tried to ruin their marriage

and many others.

Braxton Young is an infidel.

Where'd you get that from?

Jodi told me that Connie and Braxton kidnapped her

and held her hostage.

Ruby, this is starting to sound crazy.

You know what's crazy?

Is your lack of interest in saving this marriage.

I didn't realize our marriage needed saving!

A relationship needs to die before it can be reborn.

Says Jodi, I'm guessing.

It's shocking to me that it seems like Jodi is more

committed to saving this marriage, than you.

How else do you think she affords that

five million dollar house? - You know what? Maybe I should

just take the kids and leave.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Ruby, honey,

I love you. I don't want you to leave.

I love you too, but there are serious problems in this

marriage that we need to start addressing. So...

are you willing to do the hard work?

Yes, of course.

Well then, there are terms.

Jodi wants us to have an in-house separation.

- An in-house what? - Separation.

So, to begin with, we need to set boundaries.

This is nuts.

Meaning that for the foreseeable future,

you will be confined to the downstairs.

But this is my house!

Number two...

the kitchen will be off limits to you between 6 pm and 6 am.

How does going into the kitchen affect our marriage?

Finally, Kevin, communication between the two of us

needs to be limited.

Limited how?

To one hour a day.

Really?

Look...

I had my doubts too, okay?

But Jodi has saved countless marriages. She is a hero

in our community, and I believe in my heart,

that this will work.

Because I believe in Jodi.

Well, I believe in you.

If you really wanna try this, I'll do it

but only for a week. And then Jodi has to be out.

Mm-hmm.

I didn't hear you.

You have no respect for boundaries, do you, Kevin?

I didn't know I needed boundaries in my own home.

My ex-husband had no respect for boundaries either.

I feel it's a male domination problem.

Centuries in the making.

I mean, it's really why wars are fought, isn't it?

Men not respecting boundaries?

Respect boundaries, people won't get hurt.

I think you need to leave.

- Oh. - Oh, we're all gonna

miss you so much.

Thank you. The time I've spent here has been invaluable.

Mm-hmm. I'll see you on the 15th?

I have the whole weekend cleared.

Great. Oh, and don't forget to call your lawyer.

I already did.

I'll see you in group.

Finally we can get back to normal.

Hey, Lindsey.

I just wanted to sa, you were always

a fair person to deal with and I wish you luck in the future.

Uh, I'm sorry, what's this about?

Ruby fired me this morning.

What are you doing?

I am sick and tired of being scrutinized by everybody,

from the neighbors to the media.

I'm talking about the 8 Passengers channel.

Lindsey said you fired her.

Yeah, that's because I just decided

I'm not doing the vlog anymore.

Why? Any extra income we have is still coming

from that channel. - Actually, a large

portion of the viewership from 8 Passengers

has gone over to ConneXions and we wanna keep exposing

them to Jodi's methodology.

But you're not getting any of that money. You signed

over the 8 Passenger rights to Jodi.

Ruby, you created a brand. We had over 2.5 million viewers.

People respected you. We were making a decent living.

Kevin, it's not about the money.

Okay? Do you remember when I told you that we have to work

to do for God?

This... this is the work.

God wants you to destroy your business? Are you sure that

isn't what Jodi wants?

Jodi is God's messenger.

Let me ask you something. What were you and Jodi doing up

in that room all the time she was here?

I told you, we were having interventions.

Am I supposed to believe that?

Okay, what are you insinuating?

Nothing. Let's just take a breath

and think about what we're doing.

I don't need to take a breath. I've already decided

what I'm doing. - Without consulting me?

Yes. And you know what? Jodi's right.

You are just as manipulative and just as selfish

as when we started therapy.

It is time you start doing what is right for this family.

Everything I do is for this family!

Jodi says the in-house separation isn't enough.

Meaning?

Meaning...

you need to leave.

Leave how?

Leave.

You mean move out?

Yeah.

And until further notice, for their spiritual safety,

you will have no more contact with the children.

I'm not gonna do that. I love you. I love this family.

Well, it's either that or a divorce.

I'm sorry, I cannot keep living with things

the way they are.

Don't do this, Ruby. Don't do this.

No.

Safety is the foundation in which trust is possible.

We have to generate trust within ourselves before we can offer

trust to those we love.

If your wife trusts you, then there's safety in your

relationship. No more distortion. There's only truth,

and love, and safety, and responsibility.

Does that clarify things for you, Kevin?

You don't seem convinced.

I mean, I don't understand why you're not getting it?

I, I get it.

And yet, you're not changing for the better?

Well, I'm not sure I know what that means and I'm not

sure anyone in the meeting knows what that means.

Stay in your lane, Kevin! This is about you!

I'd like to be brutally honest. I have serious doubts

about your sincerity.

You are still a manipulative liar.

I've done everything you've asked me to do

from day one and you still don't approve of me.

Your words. Not mine.

I'd like you to stop attending my men's sessions.

Your influence on the group is toxic.

You're not being fair.

You know what's fair? I had to ask God what to do with you

and he told me you have to have complete solitude with him.

I can't be any more alone than I am already.

What do I have to do to get my family back?

Kevin, where is your faith?

You're in God's hands now.

Please leave.

It is so nice to see you in person.

Aw. Honey, you look tired.

Yeah, well, I haven't been sleeping too well lately.

Yeah, I know. Me neither.

Bed's too big for one person.

Well, we can always change that.

Okay. Easy there, tiger.

Fair enough. What is it you wanted to see me about?

I was wondering if you would sign over the title of the car

and the van?

Why now?

I want it in my name. I worked hard

and it makes me feel good to know I achieved something.

I was hoping you just wanted to see me.

I always wanna see you.

You know I would never take advantage of you.

Oh, I know that. You're one of the good guys.

How are the kids?

Kevin, we had an agreement. You said you trusted me.

I do, but I miss everyone.

They're fine.

Do they ask about me?

Ruby...

I thought you were gonna ask me to come home.

No. You know what you need to do.

But I don't. We keep going around and around and nothing

ever changes. Only now, I feel like I'm abandoning my family.

Okay, okay, you wanna help your family? We need more

money. Russell needs to go camp. Eve needs braces.

All right. I'll take care of it.

But I'm not teaching at the university anymore.

- What happened? - Doesn't matter. Don't worry.

If you need more money, I'll get it.

I'm interviewing for engineering jobs.

I will always continue to support you and the kids.

But please, don't make any big purchases right now.

All right.

You wanna close all of your savings accounts,

including the children's?

That's right.

May I ask why?

No. You may not.

I'm their mother. And since they're under the age of 18,

I have control of their finances.

- That's all you need to know. - Of course.

I was just making sure it was nothing we did.

I'll need you to sign these account closure forms.

What is the withdrawal amount?

$85,562.

I'd like that in cash.

You know, after I got my divorce, I never thought

I'd be this happy again.

It was that bad, huh?

Well, I mean, I don't tell too many people this, but since

you're a trusted friend, it was a traumatic experience.

People thought I didn't like men. I like men.

I just know what they're capable of.

Right.

Your turn. Safe space.

Okay um...

I haven't been truly honest with you about my younger kids.

Hmm?

Um, ever since Kevin moved out, they've been

very difficult. Russell, in particular.

How is he acting out?

Oh, belligerent, withholding affection.

And I know that they have to work through their feelings

about the separation but--

Withholding affection is a huge form of manipulation.

Well, and maybe I expect too much, you know? I mean, I, I...

I always want everything to be perfect, and I know it can't be.

Oh, that's not true. That's the problem.

People aim so low, and nothing irritates me more than somebody

saying, "Nobody's perfect."

Yeah, my first four were easy. Russell and Eve are just--

- Victims of this world? - Yeah.

Knowing there's a lot of things outside of the home

that influence children.

- Social media. - I was thinking more teachers,

friends. Even the family

can be a toxic influence.

I wish I could go back.

Raise my kids the way I was raised.

One of the reasons I have empathy for these troubled

children is because I was once one.

- You? - I would pray to God every day

to please make me a better person.

And were your prayers answered?

I came to understand that I was put on this planet

to correct children who've lost their way. Like me.

I think you and I could make Russell and Eve perfect adults.

There is nothing in the world I would love more than that.

Right? Yeah. I have an idea. Why don't you and the kids

come and stay with me for a while?

No, you've met my family. We could not

impose on you like that.

Don't be silly. It's fine.

We'll knock the demons right out of those kids.

Okay, Eve, let's get in the car. We're late, okay?

- Why aren't they coming? - I told you,

Abby and Julie need to finish school, okay?

They'll come later.

All right, girls, be good. Okay?

Okay.

No phones after 6 pm. Can you pack up the dining room? I left

boxes and tape in the hall. - Okay.

How long are you gonna be gone?

I'll be back in a few days to check on you.

Okay? Abby, you're in charge.

When are we gonna see Dad again?

That is entirely up to your father.

I don't understand.

I miss him.

In order for your father to see you again,

he needs to change his behavior. Okay? And obviously,

you guys are not important enough for him to do that.

All right?

Okay. Russell, Eve, let's go. Come on.

You made good time!

Yeah, these guys were just so excited to get here.

- Ah, come on. - Go inside. Come on!

Okey dokey.

All right, just like at home, you each have your own bedrooms.

But you know what needs to happen before you move in?

We eat lunch?

You clean your room.

Everything has to shine before you unpack even one suitcase.

Off you go.

Let's go. Let's get to work.

Sorry to hear that. I was really hoping it would go

differently for you and Jodi.

Yeah, well, you were right. Things sure got worse.

I mean, Connie and I don't have kids to worry about,

you know, but I really wish there was something

I could do to help you.

Maybe there is.

That's why I called.

Bishop Elton is your cousin, right?

- Yeah, he is. - Hear me out.

Maybe you can talk to him and see if he would

intervene with Jodi on my behalf? I know it's a big ask.

- It's not that, Kevin. - Braxton,

I am desperate. I keep hitting dead end after--

- I got to get my family back! - Kevin!

Connie and I left the church,

okay? My cousin refuses to speak with me.

- Wow. - Yeah.

Uh...

Do you mind if I ask why?

It started with Jodi.

But then we started to think about all the, the shame

and the fear they throw at you, and frankly, that got to be

too much and I started losing my faith over it

and I couldn't get it back.

- I'm sorry to hear that. - Yeah, well.

- So, what now? - Now?

Now we're just trying to start a new life.

We're still spiritual but I just...

I wish I could help.

I understand.

ConneXions' viewership continues to grow

and the comments are so positive.

People seem to love Jodi's philosophy.

How blessed I am she has chosen to work with my family.

On a sad note, Russell and Eve have been acting out like crazy.

No amount of talk therapy is working. I had hoped things

would be better by now. Jodi and I have been doing

everything we can to combat their bad behavior.

We punish them. We make Russell sleep outside.

We withhold food. And still they don't react.

Jodi thinks the devil has taken their souls.

She says we're gonna need to take more drastic measures.

Eve is still screaming her head off.

Oh, well stay strong. You're doing the right thing.

It says it's 112 degrees in the shade.

Well, she can take the heat.

Besides, it's not Eve screaming, it's Satan.

Please.

What is this?

It's a wound poultice I like to use.

All natural. Not like that drug store poison.

Russell's just standing there barefoot in the hot sun.

Like a mute.

He's trying to evoke your sympathy through silence.

Don't fall for it.

Has this worked for you before?

Are you questioning my methods?

Look, because millions of viewers--

No. No, no, of course I'm not.

I take direction straight from God.

Okay, you can bring 'em in.

Okay.

Russell, Eve, get in here.

Go wash your face.

Russell, wait.

You send that demon a message from me.

I will not give up.

I will not leave.

I'm not going anywhere.

Get out, Satan!

Go.

I can't believe I finally got Russell to admit

that picking up trash is an act of humility.

Last night was a mind-blowing experience.

God came to me. He told me I was a special spirit.

He said I was chosen to prepare the people

for the return of the savior.

I knew it.

God knows you have the faith to deliver

my children from evil.

Yes, he told me that.

But he also told me your children's souls

are in jeopardy.

To save them, I feel an imminent need to get them to open land.

- Open land? - A remote area.

Somewhere where our work won't be scrutinized by the heathens.

Like, where are you thinking?

Remember that ranch property in Arizona

that I was looking at? - Mm-hmm.

It would be a perfect destination for my followers,

500 acres, totally isolated.

I have some cash at the house. I could get it for

a downpayment. I mean, if the price is right we could

move on financing the property immediately.

Together, we're gonna make them perfect.

Why is the house up for rent?

Mom said we're moving to Aunt Jodi's.

Wh-where is Mom?

She's already there with Russell and Eve.

What? How long have they been gone?

Maybe...

a week? - Yeah, a week.

Mom left you here all alone?

It's not the first time.

Did you even eat today?

There's no food in here.

Abby? Julie?

What are you doing here?

You left them here alone for a week?

They're responsible girls.

They don't even have any food.

And why are Russell and Eve at Jodi's?

Watch... your tone.

No! Someone's gotta say something! Ever since Jodi

came into our lives, things have become insane around here!

I mean, Chad left us. You threw Dad out.

Julie and Abby are being neglected. And now you're

letting Russell and Eve live with that monster?

How dare you?

Our lives were a mess before Jodi walked into it.

She has stuck her neck out to help us.

Help us? Our family has fallen apart!

Shari, you are wrong! Jodi has done nothing but try to help us.

We are instilling truth into Eve and Russell.

Something you clearly know nothing about.

Let me ask you this. If your kid came to you on fire, would you

say I'm just gonna meet you where you are?

No, you'd throw them on the ground. You'd roll them.

You'd get a blanket. You'd start hitting the flames.

And they'd say, "You're hurting me. You're, you're beating me."

And you'd say, "No, dear, hold on, I am getting the fire out."

But there's no fire!

How do you not see that you and Jodi are the problem?

Get out.

I... I'm begging you, okay?

Open up your eyes and, and see this woman for what she is!

Get...

out.

Now.

Go.

Go!

Julie,

Abby, pack your bags.

You are going to Susan's to help clean.

Hi, you'e reached Abby.

Leave me a message.

Abby, that was...

I just wanna make sure you guys are all right. Call me.

911, what's your emergency?

Police. Open the door!

We got a call. Are you okay?

You're not hurt, are you?

Hey.

Ma'am can you open

the door, please? - Just ignore them.

Can you hear me?

Without exigent circumstances, we can't enter. Let's go.

- Hi. - Hi. I'm on my way back.

How are the kids?

Eve continues to try my patience.

Every time I try a new technique, it works,

she just digs in harder.

Right. Um, a few days ago when she was being

disobedient, wall sits worked for me.

The real problem is Russell. I'm afraid Satan is still

manipulating him. I had to tie him up.

I was hoping we

wouldn't have to do that again.

He gave me no choice.

The restraints are the only thing he responds to.

Right. I, I know you're doing everything in your power

to save them.

- Thank you. - God willing.

Don't worry, I think they'll come around.

I dropped Abby and Julie off.

Unlike Shari, they're good girls.

I pray Russell and Eve would be more like them,

choose to live in truth.

Though it pains me to see the two little ones so defiant...

...I know Jodi's methods are necessary.

The world that we live in today does not support

children being uncomfortable.

They, the adults, are uncomfortable with

children being uncomfortable.

And so, children are comforted, entertained, distracted

from the need to confess and change.

Stripping down a child's world to the basics of beans,

and rice, and manual labor, would be considered abuse

by many, but we know it's not.

It's necessary for the prideful child.

For the child who is not humble--

...you have to get to their breaking point.

911, what is your emergency?

Yeah, I've got a 12 year old boy.

I think, there's a good chance he's been abused.

Police officers! Open up!

Jodi, I need you to step out.

I have my attorney on the phone.

That's great. Step out.

No, I am not stepping out. Whoa! Whoa, whoa, whoa!

Whoa! Wait, wait a minute!

You cannot just come into my house!

They broke into my house. Do you have a search warrant?

Have a seat.

All clear. Stack up!

There you go. Thanks.

You can't just come into my house without a search warrant.

At this moment, we don't need one.

We're here on exigent circumstances.

Your call has been forwarded

to an automatic voice message.

Ruby, I'm at a job interview. Is everything okay?

Do you think I'm a good wife?

I thought phone calls were for emergencies only?

Am I a good wife?

Of course. Why would you ask that?

Am I...

am I a good mother?

The best in the world. What is going on?

Just know that all of this was God's will.

Ruby--

Hi.

I'm a police officer.

Are you okay?

What's your name?

Eve.

That's my daughter.

- Are you the mother? - That's my daughter.

- Eve! Hey. - Are you Ruby Franke?

- You can't just take her away - Hey, hey, hey, hey!

You have no right to take. Eve, I'm right here.

Baby, I'm right here, okay? Eve, Eve! Hey, that's my daughter!

- You need to back up! - Eve, baby I'm right here.

- Come with us. Come with us. - Stop! Stop it!

- We've got her. - No! Hey!

Go, get her in the car.

You're under arrest. You have the right to remain silent.

Anything you say can and will be used against you

in the court of law.

You have the right to an attorney.

If you cannot afford one,

one will be provided for you.

During the separation time, you weren't in any way involved

in disciplining your kids?

No, I've chosen to trust my wife with that.

Let me tell you why you're here.

This morning we received a 911 call saying that your son,

Russell, was knocking on doors asking for food and water.

He was emaciated and malnourished.

I'm, I'm, I'm sorry, what?

He had duct tape around his wrists and ankles,

which covered burns from the ropes that were used

to tie him down. The open wounds were treated with honey

and cayenne pepper. Hardly a recipe for pain relief.

I want you to take a second and think about that.

That is the condition of your son under the care of your wife.

What are you saying? I don't understand.

Neither do we, Kevin.

Where are Russell and Eve?

Your children are in the custody of DCS now.

They're on a medical hold for at least 72 hours.

You do not have access to them.

For how long?

That's a question for Child Services.

Uh... I feel like this is someone else's life

that we're talking about.

I love my wife.

I love my family.

How could this happen?

I have a picture of them by my bedside.

I look at it every day.

I try so hard.

All I want is my family back!

That's all I've ever wanted.

Do you live up here?

Do you live up north?

How many children do you have?

Do you need medical attention?

Evidence photos from the crime scene.

Any of these look familiar?

This was just taken at the hospital.

I wanted you to see the condition your children are in.

With the evidence we've gathered so far,

we're charging you with two counts of secondary felony

child abuse and neglect. Do you understand?

This is a witch hunt. We've been misunderstood.

But that's okay.

Every good person of God has been misunderstood

over the course of history.

Truth eternal, truth divine.

In thine ancient fulness shine!

Burst the fetters of the mind

From the millions of mankind!

Hmm.

Thank you.

- Thank you for coming. - Of course.

Um, Jodi's gonna plead guilty.

She's only doing it because I pled and she knows that

if she doesn't, I'm gonna testify against her.

That's good. I guess.

I can't believe how much power I gave her.

I mean, I followed her blindly.

But I was brainwashed.

We all were.

How are the kids?

Honestly, I'm not sure.

I haven't been able to connect with Shari or Chad

and the younger ones are in foster care.

But I intend to file for custody.

And you can have the house.

Um, all the kids can stay there. I will gladly stay away.

I'm not sure you have much of a choice.

Even if you're acquitted, they're gonna place legal

restrictions on you seeing the underage children.

I know that.

Kevin, I wanna thank you

for stepping up.

I always knew I could depend on you.

Thank you for standing by me.

I guess that makes this all the more difficult.

Ruby, I'm filing for divorce.

We meet in the cafeteria after lunch on Wednesdays.

Martinez.

Why do you do it?

Is it for the power or just for the money?

You ruined my life.

Don't sell yourself short, Ruby.

You did a pretty good job of that yourself.

Settle. Settle.

Morning, welcome to District Court.

We're here for sentencing in the matter of the State of Utah

versus Ruby Franke.

The prosecution and the defense have come to terms.

Ms. Franke, I'm told you wish to read a statement.

In the last few years, I've chosen to follow

counsel and guidance that has led me into a dark delusion.

My distorted version of reality went largely unchecked

as I was to isolate from anyone who challenged me.

Kevin, my husband of more than 23 years,

you are the love of my life.

I am so sorry to leave to you to finish

what we both started together.

You are wrapped around my heart in a knot

I will never be able to undo.

To my babies,

my six little chicks, you are a part of me.

I would never have led you to darkness knowingly.

I was so disoriented that I believed that dark was light

and right was wrong.

My willingness to sacrifice all for you was

masterfully manipulated into something very ugly.

I took from you all that was soft

and safe and good. I took from you your mother.

How terrifying this must have been for you.

I will never stop crying for hurting your tender souls.

I'm so sorry.

Thank you.

Since there's nothing further,

we'll proceed with sentencing.

Ms. Franke, for your conviction

you will serve...

Surprise!

Woo!

Oh, my gosh, you guys. You did all this for me?

- I love you, Mommy! - Aw.

It was all their idea.

Wow.

Make a wish, Mom!

Yeah!

You know what? I don't have to.

It already came true.

Hmm.

Thank you.
