- Ugh. - Welcome back.

Thank you.

Bitch!

I hope that's not your new interview technique

you're practicing there, Doug.

Thought you were on holiday.

Commissioner called me back.

Wants my sympathetic face to do the public bit.

From the mood outside,

I'm guessing we're still not entirely welcome here.

When were the riots? Five years ago?

June 11, 2002.

That's very precise.

Yeah.

Local authority holding it up as a shining example

of a bad estate turned good.

Don't be fooled by any of it.

They're a bunch of animals.

Only good thing around here was this guy...

Father Thomas Martin.

Did a lot of negotiating after the riots.

Set the boxing up to get the kids off the streets.

It's not a pretty sight.

Jesus.

No, we don't think so. We think he's just a priest.

Morning, Commander.

Cleaner found him at about 6:15 this morning.

Nothing else disturbed.

All the collection boxes still have cash in them.

Appears none of the silver's missing...

Not that there is much... And the altar cross

and the chalice thing are still here.

It was a very violent attack.

Stab wounds and bruising.

And then there's this.

Any sign of a weapon?

Nothing we've found yet.

We're getting names of all the people

at boxing practice last night,

although we think this happened after they'd all left.

The cleaner who found him, Brenda O'Hare,

says that the gym door... That's the one outside...

Was open when she got here this morning,

so it was probably open all night.

Church doors were bolted, so looks like we'll need to go

right through the church and the gym.

Bring in extra help if you need to.

Work as fast as you can on this.

Get me everything on the history of the riots, on Father Thomas.

Every detail on every troublemaker.

Ditto anyone who's going to be sympathetic towards the police.

We're gonna need all the help we can get on this estate.

I can tell you exactly who the troublemakers are.

Jack Bannerman. Ex-boxer and informer.

A wind-up merchant.

The riots kicked off after a false tip-off from Bannerman,

which led to a police raid on a drug dealer.

Except there was no drug dealer.

Just an innocent old lady called Elizabeth Frederick.

Or Betty, as she was known.

Some of you may have seen the sign in the gym...

The Betty Frederick Boxing Club.

Anyway, poor old Betty died of a heart attack,

and all hell let loose.

This is one of the worst estates in Europe

for drugs and violence.

Historically there was a lot of tension between us and them,

and Bannerman exploited that tension

to spark a major news story

which he then used to his own end...

To promote himself and boost his flagging boxing career.

The press said that we'd brought it upon ourselves.

They seemed to forget that Andy Turner lost his life

and another great officer, Chris Carter,

was in a coma for three days.

Father Thomas turned this place around.

He reduced violence by 80% in two years.

It was made very clear that they could look after themselves

and that we were not welcome.

For clarity... They fucking loathe us.

Alison here is gonna go into the estate

and do some community liaising.

Yeah, right.

She's been handpicked for her warmth and congeniality.

Yeah, all right. Calm down.

When any of you are on the estate,

don't make her job any harder by associating with her.

We need Ali to be able to comfort, help,

and guide anyone who'll spend the time of day with her

or give her any information

they would not otherwise share with us.

And please do remember this is a very sensitive

and potentially volatile environment.

If anyone was involved in the rioting

or feels that their presence on this case

may compromise us in any way, speak up now please.

There's a crèche here every day.

There's meetings for alcoholics and drug addicts.

There's Communion classes, flower arranging.

Probably a bit of ballroom dancing, too, if you fancy it.

They've got everything going on day and night.

House is always open for anyone who needs it.

So where did Father Thomas live?

There's one room in the attic, ma'am.

Forensics are just finishing up there.

- Are you that lady we talk to? - Sorry?

Community whatsit. Liaison. Is that you?

Mum says get rid of all these

before I get in trouble with all them coppers.

It's me you talk to. I'm Ali.

If you wait, I'll come and find you when I'm free.

All right, then.

He couldn't say no to anyone.

And I told him, "One day you'll invite the wrong person in."

But nobody listens to me.

- Do you have a big congregation? - Not anymore.

They all come here instead. House is always packed.

Do you know if he turned anyone away from any of the clubs?

You'd have to ask Jacko. He did all that side of things.

Who's Jacko?

Bannerman. He takes care of all that.

I have very little to do with the boxers.

Do you think Father Thomas's death

could be linked to somebody in the boxing club?

Well, there's some rough ones. That's for sure.

What's in the cupboard here? Do you know?

Nothing much, I shouldn't think.

He didn't own anything much.

And what he did have, he'd give away.

You're wasting your time.

You should be talking to some of the nutters

he was always bringing here.

Rapists, murderers, pedophiles.

All his prison friends.

That's where you should be looking.

Oi, Dougie, you wanker!

How often did Father Thomas preach here?

At least once a week. Often more.

He volunteered, too, on our listener scheme

for people at risk...

Suicide, self-harm, that kind of thing.

I've put together a list of everyone who's left

in the last six months who's had contact with him.

There's a few names you'll want to maybe look into.

One in particular... Denny Wade.

Did nearly 10 years for murder. He killed his wife.

He found God while he was here.

Mainly because he got so attached to Father Thomas.

He idolized him, but I never quite believed it.

There was just something a bit weird about him.

In what way weird?

Well, it took us a long time

to get to work out what was going on.

The prayer books kept disappearing.

- Was he stealing them? - Not entirely.

Tearing out a few pages, a few more pages every service.

Kept getting thinner and thinner.

That's enough, James.

In the end, we had to keep replacing them.

Father Thomas wouldn't speak out against him.

He even spoke for him at the parole board.

But I didn't buy it.

Where's he now? Do you know?

He went to a halfway house. Manor House.

This bruising's not a fist mark, is it?

Whatever was used, he was hit so hard

it caused internal bleeding.

Pretty sure that didn't kill him, though.

It would have floored him,

which would make sense of where the stab wounds are on his body.

He was stabbed 29 times, though not with a blade.

The punctures are round in shape.

More like a spike, though quite short.

They only just reached his heart.

Also left this bruising.

It's like the end of a penknife...

The ridges where the blades fit in.

He fell so hard on his keys that they bruised him too.

Now, the shape of the key ring

and these two keys

match exactly the key ring we found on him.

But there's another shape coming through.

Look.

It's a cross.

And there was no cross on the actual key ring.

Was there any sign of sexual activity?

No. He was fully dressed.

Trousers, underwear, shoes, socks.

No interference, and no sign of him engaging

in any sexual activity.

Forensics think whoever did it

stopped off in the confessional after.

They found a trace of blood,

smeared where it had been mopped up by the cleaner.

It's Father Thomas's. There's no prints.

Well, there's hundreds, but nothing useful.

What the hell's this?

These are five of the faces from the prison-release list.

Looks like they might know each other.

Where's Denny Wade?

After he was released, he never showed up at the halfway house.

Five! Six! Seven!

Eight! Nine! Ten!

The winner, via knockout, in the red corner,

from London's East End...

Jimmy "The Beast" Bannerman!

And a round for our loser!

Well done!

Go, Jimmy!

You enjoy that, did you?

Yes, it was, uh, educational.

Did you see the look on Terry Donnolly's face?

- Looked like he'd seen a ghost. - Oh, yeah.

Seen it before in fighters.

They want to be up there, think they can win.

It creates an adrenaline rush.

Yeah?

We were thinking of going to a club where I used to dance.

You can come if you like.

Denny Wade. We got him.

- I got to go, girls. - Bye, Jimmy!

Blimey.

He didn't get that on the social, did he?

We were praying.

What, in a derelict church?

Where else?

You know you're breaking the law, don't you?

Impersonating a priest.

I'm giving these people a way forward.

What was your relationship with Father Thomas Martin?

He was my priest.

He brought me back to God.

From the devil?

We are none of us ever far away from Satan's door.

Oh, right, it was Satan, was it,

told you to stab your wife to death... over 50 times?

Was it him who also told you to do the same thing

to Father Thomas Martin?

Father Thomas saved me from Satan.

Did you see Father Thomas after you left prison?

Uh...

Well, either you did or you didn't.

Where were you on March the 13th

between, um, 5:30 p.m. and 6:15 a.m.?

I'm not sure since I don't have a diary.

The day after I came out of prison,

I went to see Father Thomas, but that was weeks ago.

Why? Why did you go and see him?

I was feeling very insecure, and he let me stay the night.

The following day we talked for many hours,

and he educated me on the spiritual anguish

of men and women.

And he made me see that I am graced with a special insight.

That like him I have the power

to bring peace to troubled minds.

For the benefit of the tape,

I am now showing Mr. Wade exhibit number RD21...

which is a penknife with a blade and marlinespike.

Gov...

Denny, have you ever seen a knife similar to this one?

Yes, I have.

Father Thomas had one just like that.

His father gave it to him.

He was very attached to it.

Did you see it on the 13th?

I have no use for a penknife during prayers.

Did you have a use for it when you got into a fight

with Father Thomas at his church?

I wasn't at his church.

When you beat him around the head

and stabbed him 29 times with a spike like this one,

including both palms, like stigmata,

and then stabbed him through both eyes?

Come on, Denny.

You did it, didn't you?

His eyes.

Dear Jesus.

Hey, Terry.

Brought my girlfriend to see you.

Oh, so you're two-timing me now?

Don't tell Liam, but I've already got a boyfriend.

I've already told her you don't like girls.

You what?

Told her why as well.

Muppet.

What have I told you about talking to her?

Why not? She's my mate.

She's a policewoman.

Everything okay?

By the sight of this,

I'd say a sponsored skip and a boxing match

aren't gonna solve a thing.

This roof needs a total makeover.

What's up with Jack Bannerman?

Bit of a set-to about last night.

Said the whole thing cost him more money

than we made at the door.

Tried to make out I owe him money

from what we raised skipping.

How come?

He had to pay the other guy to fight.

It was all a big publicity stunt.

Should have seen it coming.

Wasn't too happy when I told him

he had to start paying rent for the boxing.

I'm pretty much done here.

I've left my phone number on the kitchen notice board

in case anyone wants to speak to me,

but hopefully they'll come to you

now that we've had the funeral.

Oh, yes.

Confession box will soon be buzzing

with petty thefts and marital indiscretions.

What is it, Terry?

There's some more sponsorship money to come,

but I've counted what we've got so far and from the raffle.

- How much? - Nearly £200.

That all? Okay.

Well, I suppose it's a start.

Put it in the usual place, then, and give me the keys, will you?

Denny Wade won't budge.

Says he's only ever stolen from prayer books

for prayer meetings.

Same reason he nicked all the other stuff.

Says the man upstairs told him

it's okay to impersonate a priest

if it helps him get his message over to more people.

I want Jimmy Bannerman brought in for questioning.

Where did he get the money for that car?

Don't waste your time.

Let me finish with Denny Wade first.

Yeah?

I've just come across something that may be relevant.

I'm not sure.

The damage we're getting at the moment... the leaks.

Someone's taken all the lead from the roof.

All the ledges and window arches.

No attempt to even repair what's gone.

Looks like they've had the lightning rod too.

I don't know if it's important,

but I think you should take a look.

Right, yeah. Okay. I'll be right over.

What about Denny Wade?

Let him sweat.

I'll have another go when I get back.

Do you think this is the best use of our resources?

What's up?

You haven't said a word since last night.

'Cause I'm at work. I can't talk about this now.

You're always at work.

I'm at work, and I'm in shock.

Talking's good for shock.

We said we were gonna wait a year.

Nothing's gonna be different in a year.

Zoe, I can't do this while I'm at work.

I just need to know you're all right about it.

I said I wanted a baby.

And I said I wasn't sure.

Sorry to bother you, sir,

but I wanted to talk to you about something I just heard.

Oh, God.

Sorry, sir.

Flat tire.

Um, call me when you get this, please.

- Need an hand? - Oh!

- I'm late already. - What, meeting your boyfriend?

My mum, actually. It's her birthday.

Don't worry. Won't take a minute.

It's slashed. Look.

Someone's cut it.

Happens all the time.

I wouldn't park here tomorrow.

You will be here tomorrow?

This is my last day.

My number's in the kitchen, Terry,

if you ever want to talk about anything.

He's got a big mouth for a little kid, hasn't he?

Liam. What did he say, then?

I can't tell you what he said. He talked to me in confidence.

But I can tell you it's sometimes better

to talk through things that are on your mind.

You should be careful.

Lock your door.

I would.

I'm just gonna ring my mum, and then I'm off.

But I'm all right now, Terry. Thanks for helping.

My number's there if you need it.

All right.

See you in a bit.

All I've ever said

is that I'm not ready and I wanted to wait.

Yeah, I know what you said.

But the thing is, how long are you expecting us to wait for...

Sir, I really have to speak to you.

Please ring me when you get this.

It's something one of the kids just told me.

About one of the boys.

Anyway, call me, please. I'll keep my phone free.

Get back.

Not wrestling.

Joe!

Where's Father Jerry? Father Jerry!

He's on the roof.

Aah!

Amen.

Bam, bam! Dead fucker!

Bam, bam, bam, bam, bam!

Bam, bam! You're dead!

Bam! Bam, bam!

Bam!

Dead fucker! Bam, bam!

Did Father Thomas ever involve you in anything illegal?

Illegal? Like what?

Very well done.

There's something odd about that.

A grown man hanging around kids all the time,

giving them things.

I'd have checked that I was at the right house

before I started breaking down the door.

- Police! - Police!

For God's sake, why didn't you tell me?!

If that priest hadn't been up all their pants,

he'd still be alive.

Are you saying you know something about this?

Because let's not forget

we're investigating a murder here, Terry.
