It connects to me a lot because I've gone through a lot of pain

in the last few months,

so this song helps me channel that pain through music.

I connect with the pain from the song

because I battled Crohn's disease for ten years,

so there's a lot of pain -- physical, mental, and emotional.

Being a full-time musician for 30 years,

you have so many failures along the way and closed doors.

At one point,

I kind of had given up on the whole music thing.

I just got diagnosed with a disease.

I had a wife I'd just been married to,

and then, when we started having kids,

the thought of music was just a long way away.

In my mind, I never thought,

in a million years, I'll be back pursuing music like this

and be on a television show like this

in front of millions of people.

This whole process has quite possibly been one

of the best experiences of my life.

I've learnt so much as a musician, as an artist,

I don't want to go home.

I want to stay all the way to the end.

the way he hangs on to every single note

and his musicianship, it's just in him.

To be able to pull out what he didn't feel

or what he may feel through song.

About five, six months ago, I had my colon removed.

I have that pain still that I've gone through.

When you sing, what do you usually think about?

Whatever the words are, if it's a song I can relate to,

it sure helps a lot. Right.

But if I haven't been in that situation,

I know somebody who has. Yes.

And so I'm telling the story for them. Yep.

That's good. It makes it more personal.

Your main goal is to touch their heart.

How did you create and figure out your sound,

having so many genres under your belt?

Exploring jazz...

Yeah. ...blues,

pop, even classical singing all feeds into the reservoir.

Music is a language that we all speak.

Then you develop like a signature.

Like a fingerprint. It's unique.

When you think back to what you guys did in The Police,

it was just like a collision of sounds.

You never heard that before.

His sound is his fingerprint.

It was such an awesome thing to hear

Sting, the very man who sang "Roxanne,"

to give me feedback.

It was just like a very surreal moment.

Tell me what song you're singing.

I'm singing "Bruises" by Lewis Capaldi.

I picked this song because it's right in my wheelhouse,

and I feel like the past two songs

that I sang on the show aren't exactly the slow,

emotional ballads that I like to sing.

Lewis is singing about a heartbreak.

I have not been through a heartbreak.

Last year, I got to do master classes with Betsy Wolfe

and some other Broadway stars.

Broadway training really helps me

with getting into the mind-set of being through a heartbreak,

when I haven't really been through much of that in my life.

I'm really grateful for where I am right now,

but I would be sad to go home and just go back to school

and live my normal life.

I really want to make it to the playoffs

because this is what I love to do.

When I was 7 years old,

this is the first competition song that I did.

And back then, I really don't know

how to access the emotion.

Now I feel like all of the rejections

that I had doing auditions... Yeah.

unapologetic.

I really had insecurities back then,

but as I found my way with the help of my dad,

um, he died with kidney failure, so...

And he really loves music.

He's really my coach.

2019.

And I wish I have money

because I wanted him to do the transplant,

but we don't have enough.

So it's unfortunately not on our favor.

But I would always remember him. When you go on stage,

just sing your heart out because I'll be there watching.
