When we get back to Nashville, you know

your little cowgirl outfit--

- Oh, you're kidding.

- --when you were three years old?

I have it.

I put in a little acrylic box for you.

And the fringe is all coming off, and Margaret said,

"You're going to have the fringe replaced?"

I said, "Heck no."

I want every ice cream stain that's on there.

- [laughs]

- But, you know, it's funny how things from our past

keep coming back.

♪ ♪

- [inhales and exhales]

My mother died by suicide.

That is not something that's easily

said in a room of people.

You know, when I pass my mom's house,

I still think of the day that I got the call,

and I'm still driving over that day.

It's the weirdest thing.

Your brain replays and replays and replays

trauma until it's filed.

♪ ♪

- You love me?

You ever going to leave me?

[laughs]

♪ ♪

- She loved words.

This is her dictionary.

And you had to come in and pick a word and learn a new word.

"Eminent" is the word I picked today, Mom.

You turn left, and then this was always her favorite room.

I haven't been back in here.

Her desk...

that she used to sit here and do autographs.

Oh, me.

And then she had my little cowgirl outfit.

[laughs] The littlest cowgirl.

[laughs]

It was so cute.

Ah, this is too weird.

You just take a lot for granted.

[cheers and applause]

[gentle music]

Oh, my god, I'm so mad that she's not here.

And I'm relieved she's not in pain anymore.

I go through all the emotions kind of at once.

It's like a birth and a death.

It brings about everything you have in your life,

and it brings it to a head.

It's joy. It's sorrow.

It's pain.

It's I can't believe this has happened,

but why am I surprised?

I'm shocked but not surprised.

I'm still in the middle of processing my grief,

and I have 1,000 decisions to make

about whether or not I'm going to do this final Judds tour.

It's a really hard decision.

♪ ♪

My mom had a thing for packing her car full of this stuff.

And everywhere we would go, she would

pass out my CDs or her book.

She had a thing for the fans, and she just--

she carried stuff in her car and handed out autographs

everywhere she went.

So she was always thinking about the fans.

So my mom is the family historian.

NG4, '84-- oh, the beginning?

OK.

Like, that's probably one of our very first shows--

1984.

I am literally 18 years old.

Those were our first outfits.

Oh, they're terrible.

They're so bad, they're good.

Oh, my god.

RCA-- that's our very first job.

I'm just a baby in some of these.

Gosh.

Before we became successful and famous,

we were on welfare, food stamps.

My mom and my sister slept on a mattress on the floor.

I remember Mom and Ashley and I,

we were so poor and so unsure about the future--

and I'm talking future, like of the next day,

if we're going to have something

to eat kind of thing.

Mom was just determined as hell to put food on the table.

And here's my mother as a nurse.

She got in some trouble for wearing too much makeup.

Look at her.

I mean, she's got on eyelashes, for god's sake.

She's a nurse with eyelashes on.

We were just ordinary girls from Kentucky.

When she moved to Nashville with me,

everyone thought she was nuts.

She did work as a nurse, you know,

until she became one of the most famous women

in country music.

- I just feel like the most fortunate

person that's ever lived.

- And we went from welfare to millionaire.

We made it.

We did huge tours.

We did Oprah, Jay Leno, award shows,

Vegas, and the Super Bowl.

We performed for the pope, six presidents,

and the list continues.

[twangy guitar music]

♪ ♪

- I prayed about it for several weeks

and then realized I have to resign.

I have to retire from the music industry that I love so much.

[upbeat music]

♪ ♪

Goodbye, America.

- It's been one heck of a ride.

♪ ♪

[sniffs]

You just...

take a lot for granted.

[somber music]

♪ ♪

There are moments when I can't believe that mom is not here.

We just announced this tour and made all these plans.

- The toothpaste is out of the tube.

- It's happening right this minute.

We're touring together.

- To Wynonna's credit, she definitely

wanted to give Naomi one more run around the sun,

so to speak.

Naomi is super excited.

And from there, it just started.

- Everybody was so excited to see them stand side by side

and hear the harmony and see them singing together again.

So the anticipation of this tour,

which had a great amount of buildup,

in truth, the anticipation was huge.

I mean, the fan base was dying for and beyond excited

to see the two of them back on stage again.

- And we just appeared at the CMT Awards,

which we hadn't done in years.

[gentle guitar music]

♪ To share with you the last bite ♪

♪ Of bread I had to eat ♪

When she looked at me, I knew something was wrong.

I just knew it.

I knew it; when she got on stage

and she looked at me with that look,

and I went, "Oh, my gosh, she's in trouble."

So...yeah.

She was late, and she's never late.

So I don't know-- we don't-- there

are some things we don't know. - Yeah.

- She was lost. - Yeah.

- The look on her face, her body language.

- And then she was fine the rest of that night

in terms of knowing where to sing, but it was still--

it looked like she was--

- I saw cracks in her armor.

- We learned today of the death of country

music great Naomi Judd.

Daughters Wynonna and Ashley said in a statement

that they lost their mother, "To the disease

of mental illness."

Naomi and Wynonna were to be inducted

into the Country Music Hall of Fame tomorrow night.

Naomi Judd died in Nashville.

She was 76 years old.

[somber music]

- What I witnessed and what I experienced,

I'll never be the same.

- Family, all of us, all of, you know, my kids,

her kids, you know, the cavalry came racing.

- At the moment when Mom died, I said,

"Now the glass is half empty.

And how am I going to navigate these waters?"

It's so uncertain.

The tour was too much to consider at the time.

How in the world am I going to do this without her?

Because every single song I can see her

in my mind's eye dancing around,

and even my movements are to her.

And so every single moment is to be shared with her.

And now what am I going to do without her?

- As soon as she started to think

about the fans and the people holding these tickets

and just the kind of mystery,

she was very clearly saying, "They need to know."

Then at the CMT Memorial, which was this beautiful tribute

to Naomi, Wy just decided to announce what she

was thinking about the tour.

- I can't put into words how devastated I am.

I said goodbye to her two weeks ago and kissed her

on the forehead.

[whimpers]

She was unlike anyone in our family.

And I miss her so much.

But I will continue to sing.

I said I would, and--

[applause]

So I've made a decision that after a lot of thought,

I'm going to have to honor her and do this tour.

I'm just going to have to.

[cheers and applause]

[twangy music]

- Just when you're done, and--

- Ready to fight? - Yep. How's it going?

- I like that hat.

- I came really close to canceling this tour.

♪ ♪

I'm absolutely exhausted, and I'm emotional,

and I'm really fragile, and I don't really want to do this.

However, this is life after death.

You know what, guys?

This is for the fans.

This isn't about me.

The fans are having their own experience,

and they want to see what reminds them of that--

the Judds.

"Grandpa" is so timeless.

I would rather see the video in the '80s and it be schlocky

in the '80s than it be--

let's just do the music video.

- That's actually not a bad idea.

- In a time where everybody has an opinion of what

the show should be like and what songs I should do,

and I want to tell a story about this incredibly

beautiful, dysfunctional, loving, fighting family.

And my mom was the centerpiece,

you know, and now she's not.

So beautiful.

Look how beautiful she is.

She doesn't really hang the wash on the line.

[laughter]

That is a complete fabrication.

[laughter]

I did the laundry.

[gentle piano music]

♪ My mamas gone, gone, gone forevermore ♪

- I hope that I can walk away from this experience feeling

better, not bitter, for what has happened

with mother dying.

- I just lay there, and I weep for the sorrow of not

having her here to argue with.

And yeah, how am I going to do this?

- I believe in the power of love.

[cheers and applause]

And I believe there is always hope.

[tense music]

- It was my husband who said to me, "You deserve

to celebrate this legacy."

And I think that's when I started to go,

there is a possibility that this actually might work.

- I knew that the women of country music

would show up for Wy.

- Country music, it's pretty tight.

We show up for each other, and we will kick

anybody's ass for each other.

We just will. That's the way we are.

- It was an immediate, "Who would be the list

that will be the co-Judd with Wy?"

It was just a matter of, you got to ask,

and that's all there is.

- I said, "If you need me for anything at all ever,

I will show up."

- I know all the Judd's songs, so I was ready to,

put me in, coach, whatever you need.

- I feel very honored to be asked.

- It's just a very emotional thing to be a part of.

[twangy guitar music]

The success of the Judds carved a path for all of us.

It's just like this girl power, you know.

And I also feel very palpably that we

are here to support her.

- I certainly think it's a celebration

of the Judds' music.

I wouldn't say even close a chapter, actually.

I would say maybe reopening a chapter.

♪ ♪

- Today I'm calm just because I'm freaked out into a calm.

- Mm-hmm.

- Like, it's the--

I mean, we're on stage Thursday for rehearsal,

and then Friday is the day.

- Wow.

- Come over and look at this picture,

if you want to grab it.

Hmm?

- Which one are you talking about?

- This one.

Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette,

and Dolly is not in the picture.

She was obviously busy doing something fabulous.

But these women are my teachers.

Hurry up. I got to make dinner. - I know. I know. I know.

I'm working.

- Do you want pancakes, or do you want like, eggs and bacon?

I mean, I have sausage.

I don't have bacon.

- Sausage and pancakes.

- Because you've been such a good boy.

Oh, honey, this time tomorrow we'll be on a bus.

- Thank you, honey.

- All that dancing and being a superstar,

and now you're here being-- - This--

I can remember my moves from Mom and me to--

I can remember her going, dun, dun, dun.

She was so, you know--

- The chef that dances...

Makes happy pancakes.

Oh, man, I am maxed out.

- Lindsay and I were talking, "How are we going

"to pack and get on the bus?

"And how are we going to do it all in a day?

Where am I going to put my lashes?"

I mean, come on, priorities.

Some of these for daytime, showtime,

after showtime.

All right.

- How you doing?

- [chuckles] Ohh.

- [laughs]

- Yes.

- It is a long drive? - It's--

- A ton of money.

- --very close to 10 hours. - OK.

- Welcome. Good morning.

- Let us talk about a couple of things, if you're open.

- OK.

You're supposed to ask me how I am first.

- Hey, honey, only cause you looked so great,

I figured you were just perfect.

- [sighs]

- Do you want to say something about--

I really want to thank, you know,

Brandi, or whoever it is that night,

for coming alongside and just being

my friend during this time.

Something like that.

- OK. I know you'll--

- I like how you're trying to, like, script me, but go ahead.

- Well, I'm-- we're going to have to have some of that,

because we can't just wingding.

I mean, we have such a cool thing.

You know, we both are aware.

It's fairly miraculous and special

to be the kind couple who can do all we do,

every ounce of work, together.

- OK, so what you're saying is, don't talk so much.

- So--so...

[laughing]

I am so glad that there's people here

just so I don't get hurt.

- My mother spent a great deal of her time

in the middle of the circus being the ringleader.

I'm not really a ringleader.

My gifting is not in the administrative.

My gifting is in the music and the fellowship through music.

So I'm going to have to lean on Cactus even more.

- You are going to be amazing, as you always are.

Calm down.

You're just fine. You're just good.

Breathe. Breathe.

[laughing]

- I am breathing.

- OK.

So instead of starting the show with Wynonna

on the main stage, we're going to sneak her

around the building to a smaller B stage

in the middle of the floor.

Then she'll take an elevator up and perform the first song

in the middle of the audience.

Now, in order for this to work, we've got

to get her there unnoticed.

And that is a little tricky when there's at least

10,000 fans in the venue.

- From here-- yep, this is where we put her in.

- This is where we enter? - Yep.

So let's--

- Whose idea was this?

- So the B stage sounds really good on paper.

If you've ever been in an elevator with Wynonna Judd,

she is the most claustrophobic person

I've ever met in my life.

- And here we go.

- Put her in a road case, and we roll her out.

I'm okay.

- Get her underneath right before

the band walks on stage.

- [indistinct].

- Mother, wherever you are, I hope you can see this.

- That's me and Bubba and Wynonna under there.

Bubba is our stage manager.

And I had a dream cues.

And Bubba looks at me.

So I say, OK, send her.

So he pushes the button, and she goes up.

- I'm going up an elevator surrounded

by pitch black and fog.

I can't see two inches in front of my face.

And I feel wobbly on the elevator.

But I think this is important for me

during this time to step outside

of myself and my comfort zone.

- Look at that.

Ooh.

Now I got a real Judds jean jacket.

Oh, and it says Brandi on the front.

- Aww. - Brandi Judd.

- Oh my god.

- I didn't even know she was doing this though.

Look at this.

- Oh my gosh.

- That's so cool.

- That looks so cool.

- Being on this tour is surreal.

The Judds were undoubtedly one of the most instrumental

musical influences on my childhood,

especially my early childhood.

It was totally transformative not just

for me but our whole family.

My brother Jay, who's singing with the Judds on this tour,

taught me to sing harmony to "This Country's Rockin'."

- When I found out that I was going to be on this tour

and had to learn the songs, I started playing them all.

And it was like, I know all of these.

Done. You know?

To get up there with just me and Brandi singing

backup vocals together for Wynonna Judd,

I kept saying, "Mom is going to die.

- It's a big deal.

It's a big deal for our family.

But for her and I, specifically, a big deal.

- The Judds were a mother-daughter

language for a lot of mothers and daughters.

- That we really understood.

Look at those pictures.

- It says, "My dearest Brandi, five months ago, Mama left,

"a new chapter begins.

"Thank you for being a part of this time

"of reflection and celebration.

Love you dearly, Wy."

- Oh. - She's so thoughtful.

- Yeah. - Yeah, right?

- Do that. - OK.

He's got it.

- So she'll take the second verse.

She'll start it.

- This is going to be heavy.

How are any of us going to sing?

- If I cry, I have so much support, it's OK.

- Absolutely. - It is OK.

- Oh, it's-- - It's just in front

of thousands of people, and people--

just as long as I don't look ugly cry.

- I--I tried to get hypnotized to do this,

because when I was practicing the songs,

I was having a hard time picturing doing them with you

and not getting emotional.

So this is where she's doing her hypnotism

on me through this text.

She says, "Asking your grieving self to take a front row seat

and watch the show instead of be a part of it."

- Hmm.

- "And let your performer self be the one that does the work."

[tense music]

- I've been crying already, and it hasn't even started.

I know that her and her mom are strong women,

and I did not doubt that she

would not continue this journey.

And her mom's looking right down on her from heaven.

- My favorite part about the Judds

is just being able to hear their music.

They're a big part with the relationship

between me and my grandma.

- There's not a bad Judds song--

"Love Can Build a Bridge."

You know, you just can't--

you have to stop and feel that song from your toes

all the way to your soul when it comes on.

- I have seen her over a thousand times now.

I think it was like 2018 I had hit my 1,000th show.

Wynonna, I love you, and I know this is very hard for you

to go through.

I love you, girl.

I love you, love you, love you.

- My grandpa had gotten tickets

to the Statler Brothers,

and it was a sold-out crowd of 10,000 people.

And then the emcee came over the speakers and said,

"Ladies and gentlemen, please help us

give a warm welcome to the Judds."

I was at the edge of my seat from the word go,

and I was hooked.

So they're very precious to me.

Um...

this is going to be very, very hard tonight.

- All right, here we go. - Oh, look out.

Look out. - You can't sneak in.

[laughs]

- All right, let's-- let's circle up here,

grab hands.

- So, you know, those two trapeze people,

they come together, and you hope that they

catch each other.

Mom had always caught me.

And I always caught her.

I'm now doing it by myself.

[exhales]

Here I go.

- In Jesus' name. Amen.

The way they sang, the way that they looked at me--

I looked down front and saw some of the fans that

have been there since the beginning of time,

Judd time, that I just was overcome with emotion

to the point where I was shaking.

It'll never happen again the way it happened tonight.

I know in my heart that each and every fan that

has been there has watched me go through every single part

of my life.

And I just felt so supported and so loved

and yet so alone.

I came immediately offstage

and went straight to the shower

and just stood in the shower and cried.

[light music]

We're in Toledo, Ohio, and this is the second show tonight.

I'm going to cry a lot, and I know it.

And so Ashley is here today to support me as a sister.

And I have hugged her several times today.

And we're just bonded in a different way

because of death.

Ashley was 14 and I was 18 when I made it in show business

and left to go on the road with my mom,

and Ashley was left behind.

We have a lot of, you know, making up to do, I guess.

And now that Mom is gone, especially,

Ashley is learning how to show up in my camp,

and I'm showing up in her camp.

I don't have a lot of blood relative family left,

and one of them is Ashley.

I want a relationship with my sister,

and what does that look like?

and we kind of went through my kindergarten

up to the 10th grade reminiscing,

lots of family memories.

And we just thought we would share a little bit.

And I was wondering if there was

something that you wanted to--

that you maybe left out about one of your favorite memories

about Mom.

- Mother had a great sense of adventure,

and we lived in the back of a U-Haul it trailer, literally.

- At times, we did.

And something that I've been remembering a lot lately

is that she was soft, and she smelled pretty.

And I think that's what I loved about her best.

And we just wanted to remind everybody

that you don't have to be alone if you're hurting.

And we might feel like we're alone,

- I'm sure there are people that are going through

much more difficult than I, and yet this is my story.

And this is why I've agreed to do this documentary is

because I want other people to see themselves in what

I'm doing and realize, "God, if Wynonna can do it,

I can do it."

I got a message from somebody through Mom's husband that

said, "I'm actually going to decide to stay and not commit

suicide because of last night."

And I went--

Yeah, she wrote him, and said, "I'm not going to end my life.

"I'm going to decide to choose life,

because I see what devastation it is to the family."

Wow.

So between shows, this family that I come home to

is everything to me, and it keeps me going

and fills me up with joy and gives me purpose.

Elijah, get me some butter, please.

Top, inside the door, butter block.

Today I am Mrs. Moser, and I'm texting my grandson.

And it's my granddaughter's six-month birthday today.

And there's just all of this happening at once.

- Wy is a fantastic cook.

I mean, she can sing really well,

but man, she can really cook too.

- Singing is my side hustle. - Double threat.

Yeah, that's kind of like your second--

second job.

- There's times when they start chanting

my name, which is uncomfortable,

because she's out there.

- [laughing]

Even I think you're funny.

- The amount of love that crowd has for me is unbelievable.

[laughing]

I mean, and her. And her.

I mean, they're obviously there to see her,

but man, the amount of love they show me, it's incredible.

- Marrying Cactus was one of the greatest days of my life,

because I've never trusted someone

and loved someone simultaneously

like I love Cactus.

- There's a lot to this tale, and it's nothing

you would ever have dreamt.

[laughing]

I asked Wynonna to marry me on Christmas Eve.

- It was perfect, because it was on the farm,

and it was just the two of us and horses.

And it was perfect.

- We got married on June 10th.

On August 18th,

I had a Mercury Cougar cut off my leg,

you know, literally, on the road.

I lived through the night, which was a miraculous story.

And that two and half, three months into getting married,

she had to become a nurse.

And there was a lot of things she had to do.

You have to clean this kind of a wound.

It's horrid.

That's kind of our thing.

Even in the worst of times, we can

figure out how to get past it.

And, you know, thank God.

You know, find a happy place.

- Them together is just kind of a fun thing to watch.

They're just kind of the couple that everybody wants to be.

- We are blessed beyond anything else.

No matter what else happens in our lives,

jobs, and everything else, we have this family circle.

- Yes. - Right?

And that is power.

And so in Jesus' name, we just say, thank you.

Thank you for this family.

- This family is everything to me.

I have three bonus children, as well as two of my own.

Cactus and I have blended our family together,

and it is awesome.

Oh, my God.

- As I was going up, I pretty much immediately

knew something was wrong.

My cape got stuck in the lift.

The elevator immediately took me to the ground.

[tense music]

I did the first song on my knees.

because it knocked the wind out of me.

I'm OK.

- I was panicking.

My first thought was, OK, the show is over.

But when went up and pulled her cape, and she said,

"I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine.

Just give me the microphone." I'm like, OK.

OK, she's fine.

- I am letting you see this, even though I don't want you

to see this, that I'm having some real anxiety,

and I feel like

how a Tiger Woods or a sports person feels

when they're off their game.

And we're nixing the "B" stage tonight.

And I feel like somehow I'm failing in a way,

and it's really debilitating, because it's,

like, I am a champion.

I was "trained" to come out here and kick ass.

And I feel vulnerable.

And we will "revisit" this in another state.

- Perfect.

- I'm dealing with a hell of a lot for me.

And I'm a tough son of a bitch.

And I can work hard and do a show with 104 temperature.

I've done it many times.

Yet this is different, you guys,

because this is dealing with your mental health.

And your mental health is as important as your physical

and spiritual health.

♪ ♪

The grief is just so coming in waves in a way

that I wasn't expecting, and on stage,

I'm getting really dizzy.

And it's freaked me out.

I went to my doctor, and we did vitals and talked about meds

and just everything.

And is there anything I'm doing?

And-- and I guess the grief gets so powerful

and the support and the love is so intense that it's knocking

me over, like literally.

- This is one of the hardest things you are going

to go through this lifetime.

Like, you are in the middle of probably

your biggest challenge.

- My mom and I were really disconnected towards the end.

And I was on the road with Cactus and the band,

and I was doing my thing, and Mom was here by herself.

And I have immense pain about that.

And I've asked myself, you know,

what could I have done differently?

And I think that's one of the things.

What-- not tour?

Not travel? Not live my life? No.

I just think that I could have been a little more present.

[light music]

- When you walked into that room,

what was your feeling when you saw her?

- No words.

Absolute disbelief, like this is not my mother.

It's not my mom.

Honestly, I was in such disbelief.

I was frozen.

- Your mom lying on the floor--

your mind doesn't know how to process it,

so it is going to float around for a little bit.

It's going to float around till it

finds a little more grounding.

- Hmm.

- And in time, you will find a little

more ability to remember other images rather than that one.

- OK.

Hmm.

- Did you yearn and love and wish for something different

as you slow those moments down now?

- Yeah, I wish I had punched the cop that

was standing there in my way.

No.

I say that just because I was so mad

at him for him shooing me away, because it's like,

that's my mom.

I wish I had pushed him out of the way

and gone and kissed her on her forehead then

instead of when she had already died.

[exhales]

- You are going on stage in honor of her,

and that absence is allowed,

painful, and it's your mom.

You know, as you know, this isn't your singing partner.

This is your mom.

And you have it all, a full life, the bad and the good,

and one of those things is a horrific tragedy.

[gentle music]

- I feel her nudging me when I'm really weary,

like tired today.

My mother has a really good work ethic.

All throughout the Judds, she had a very

strong sense of purpose--

and driven.

I'm not as driven and as ambitious as she was.

And so I feel her saying to me, rub some dirt on it

and get back in the game.

I think about that.

- We opened up for you at the old fairgrounds at Fan Fair.

have an opportunity to meet them in a meet and greet

or in a mall or whatever.

- I met her in a mall when she was 15.

- And there have been people that have been disappointing,

And sharing the stage with you will be framed on my wall

But the moment I will always appreciate the most is,

you were the first call that I got when the news

broke about my divorce.

Mothers and daughters-- there is

a huge component to this that is so beyond show business.

These people grew up with me and watched me,

and they are invested.

- It is, because I get really sad, and I go out on stage,

and I look out, and I see a mother-daughter,

and all of a sudden things are better.

I just feel better.

- A lot of people don't know this

about Wynonna and her mother, God rest her soul.

First phone call I got right after 9/11

other than from the military was from Wynonna Judd.

She said, "General, the Judds are Kentucky girls.

"You're our Kentucky general.

What do you need us to do for you and the troops?"

Wynonna came up and did three or four

free concerts for our troops.

Her mom and her sat with our troops

getting ready to deploy at night into Kandahar,

and they sat and prayed with them.

As booming as her voice is, her heart beats stronger,

especially for this country.

I'm so proud of the way you're expressing yourself.

- I appreciate you, and you're my family,

and I love you guys.

Since mom left, I've had anxiety about doing this tour.

Cactus has been there every step of the way on this tour,

and I could not have gotten as far as I got without him.

And he kept me believing that it was

possible to do the B stage.

- Cactus has been there for me in ways I didn't

even know that I needed.

He's not only helped me to conquer my fears

around this tour; he's been there to help

me heal through this tour.

- I never got a chance, actually,

until this tour to tell Wynonna what

Out of college, I was in Georgia for the summer,

and I was working for an insurance company,

and I was driving two hours one way.

So in that car ride every day, I would listen to the radio.

And I remember hearing "Mama He's Crazy" on the radio,

and I pulled over at a Kmart.

They had a little--I think it was like a little

five-song EP, and I bought it and played it

all the rest of the way home.

And, honestly, it was a catalyst for me.

I was in Nashville by the time I was 19.

I mean, and I really credit Wynonna's voice and The Judds

with really giving me that push.

So more important than I think she would ever know.

To me, this whole tour feels like all we want to do

is support Wynonna in the way that she needs.

And I think she's experiencing joy.

I think it's also hard.

I can't imagine all of the emotions

that she goes through in any given night.

But we just want to help her finish this strong.

And, um, it's just my honor to be here.

Ashley and I have never forgotten where we come from.

We are Kentucky girls through and through.

Playing Kentucky is always so, so special.

- I'm excited. I am so excited for this.

- You know, I think it's remarkable

that Ashley and I have made it as far as we have.

We have a lot of, you know, making up to do, I guess.

You know how it is when you're 20 and 30.

You know everything.

And you're so right.

And then you learn as you get older, you can be right,

or you can be loved.

You're going to have to pick one today.

And as you get older--

Appreciate you guys.

--and you look around, and you realize,

there's going to come a day when you're not here anymore.

And I just don't want to fight anymore

or argue as much as I just want to sit and have dinner.

You know, I just want a relationship with my sister,

and what does that look like?

- When I first came to Nashville, I was 19.

As part of my graduation present from my parents,

my mom bought studio time.

I got to record five songs.

And one of them was "Have Mercy."

That's my job for myself.

I'm having a hard time.

Listening to The Judds, you know, in high school,

like, I was crazy to meet them.

I mean, we all were.

You know, a mother-daughter duo with a family harmony,

just like sitting on their front porch,

and having a conversation with them.

What I remember is that Faith was the first to reach

out personally.

Can I cook for you?

Can I bring you something?

Faith was literally one of the very first people

that reached out.

She's close to me, because I've known her

since she was a teenager.

I love her so much.

- God, I've known Wynonna and Naomi,

I mean, most of my career.

I mean, I can't remember exactly when we met.

It was, you know, after I'd had some successes and stuff,

of course, because I couldn't get close to them

until I had some success.

And then after Faith and I got married, you know,

we all started having kids, and, you know, our kids

went on playdates together.

I remember that quite a bit.

So we were around each other quite often.

- I love you, sweetheart.

- Oh, my God. Oh-ho-ho-ho.

- Yeah, I mean, you know, when something like that

happens to somebody that you know and you love,

that's your first instinct is to reach out

and just, you know, you never have the right words.

All you can do is just say, "I love you; I'm here."

- Everything I did was with her on the bus.

That's really when I think about her, too, at night,

on the bus, because we had so many years together.

♪ ♪

Here's what I know about grief.

It hits in waves, and you just don't know

when it's going to happen.

I feel very little girl today.

I want some ice cream, and I want to watch cartoons

and stay home from school.

♪ ♪

- These are your talking points.

♪ ♪

[exhales]

- I have many questions about the suicide,

and I think I always will.

There's no way they'll ever be answered.

You just have to accept it and make peace

with it as much as you can.

- Ready? - And with no further ado,

the queen herself, Wynonna Judd.

[cheers and applause]

- So this is a big fat hairy deal for me.

And 31 years ago almost to the day

I did my last concert with my mom.

And we are recreating it on November the 3rd

at the Murphy Center.

I will tell you, everyone from my lawyer, to my gynecologist,

to my preacher--

[laughter]

I'm not kidding-- to people I don't even like...

[laughter]

Are coming.

So there's a conviction of just wanting

to help someone out in the audience,

and that's what this tour is.

I'm with these people in this moment.

I'm exhausted today.

I've done so many shows where I literally fall on my knees,

because the love is so strong.

It's the most emotional I've ever been

and the most vulnerable I've ever felt

and the strongest I've ever been able to sing.

- I know; I see you.

- Don't forget to do your grief work.

I do my grief work this afternoon,

and people ask me what I'm doing.

And I say, on a good day, I reach out for help.

On a bad day, I reach out for help,

because I can't do this by myself.

And I'm living my life in the public eye through this grief.

[cheers and applause]

- I just feel so helpless so much of the time.

I'll be honest with you, if I can help one fan, two fans,

more fans, I am here to help somebody not do

what my mother did, period.

♪ ♪

- Hey.

Awesome job back there as usual.

- Hey, thanks, toots.

I'm tired.

I'm weary.

I'm worn.

I'm blessed. I'm stressed.

And I'm feeling a lot of pain, because, you know,

when I pass my mom's house, I still think of the day

that I got the call, and I'm still driving over.

♪ ♪

I don't want to be a martyr, so I'm talking about this,

because I want somebody to say,

"Well, if Wynonna can do it,

I can do it, because she's a hot mess."

But I'm still showing up every day.

♪ ♪

This isn't performing.

This is living.

♪ ♪

- I would say that Wy was so bonded to me.

♪ ♪

We just had this psychological umbilical cord

that frankly wasn't cut until the farewell concert itself.

♪ ♪

- The one thing that's perfect tonight

is that you guys are out there sharing this with us.

[cheers and applause]

I couldn't find my shoes.

And I got the wrong boots on.

And I don't like the way my hair looked tonight.

But I got my mom, and I got you guys,

and that's all that matters right now.

[cheers and applause]

December 4, 1991 was our last concert.

That was the last time I was ever on stage with her

until 2015 for a reunion.

♪ ♪

1991-- this is what was going on.

- I said to Wynonna, "What if we recreated

the 1991 special at the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro?"

And without hesitation, she was like, "Yes, let's do this.

And now how do we do it?"

[light guitar music]

- We had toyed with bringing a lot of the artists back.

And everyone said yes.

It's pretty incredible. It's pretty emotional.

I mean, I went out there when they were putting up The Judds

sign, and I was like, "God, I can't tell you how many times

that I've watched this special."

I mean, over and over and over.

It's going to be pretty emotional, I think,

for her today.

- We're trying to recreate the vibe with a 2022 twist.

It's going to be really strange for me.

I'm going to be singing some of the same songs

that I was singing that night,

and it's just-- it's a strange event.

But it's necessary, I think, because people

want to relive those memories.

and to life after death,

to celebrating life after death.

- I look up to her so much and the way

that she just is who she is and stands in her power

and sings her ass off.

- We've been together for so long that we've had

personal losses, and the music was

always the thing that brought us back together

and was the joy.

And that's what I see happening for Wy,

is that it's healing her, and it's

healing everyone around her.

- Let me hug you. Thank you for letting me be

a part of this.

Like a lot of folks my age, listening to The Judds,

that was just part of-- it's just part of your musical DNA.

When music like that is such a part of the fabric of what you

are made of, I should say thank you specifically

out loud to her for that.

- I'm just overwhelmed.

I'm sad and happy.

That's weird.

I'm sad happy.

- What might be happening for Wynonna

is that she is seeing evidence

of the good

that her and her mom have put into the world.

But I hope that she's seeing that even sometimes if it's

hard for her to understand...

or feeling like maybe the price was too high

in some ways, that she can see somebody like me and say,

we helped someone, you know,

when she can't see all the other people they helped,

but they're out there.

I think the tour was a great distraction,

and it was incredibly difficult for me.

I know that it helped people.

I still hear my mother, and I feel her.

And I don't know that that will ever change.

It's not the way the story was supposed to end.

Time certainly helps you get to the sixth stage of grief,

which is finding meaning.

Singing the Judd music was so healing,

even moreso than I had anticipated.

Fans helped me to heal through a very deep and dark time.

It was both hell and hallelujah.

♪ ♪

♪ Had a dream ♪

♪ About you, baby ♪

♪ Had a dream about me ♪

♪ And you ♪

♪ Had a dream ♪

I want a lemonade.

- I'm going to have to go with vanilla malt,

because that always goes with chicken biscuits.

And then, what am I drinking? You guys have lemonade?
