Original subtitles

My name is Bear Grylls.

I served in the British Special Forces,

climbed to the summit of Everest

seas, and went through the icy Arctic.

Now, I'll fall parachute the mountains of the Sierra Nevada.

Five million climbers, canoeists and climbers

come here every year

and, each year about two hundred end up having serious problems.

I'll show you what to do to survive.

I'm flying over the mountains that make up the Sierra in California.

645 km of jagged, dense forests and plains blazing.

I will put the position of someone lost.

I'll show you how to survive the hard way.

Alone and without equipment.

Everything I carry is a canteen, a cup and a flint to make fire.

The film crew will accompany me on my journey.

To get down there

I jump parachute the highest mountains.

But jump an altitude as high

means that the air is thin

ie I fall much faster than usual.

To reduce the risk hurt me

I will try to land on water.

I can see from up here some lakes in the mountains

and that is my goal.

I can see the lake here.

This is where I go.

It will be very tight jump between these mountains

and there are a lot of turbulence.

Landed in these small lakes.

The water is cold.

Just a few degrees above 0 degrees.

At this point, was one of the landing fastest I've ever done.

And I know well the danger make these jumps in the water.

Only had one before this.

By landing on the slopes mountains

risked very serious injury.

But landing on water brought another problem.

At this altitude, with wet clothes

there is a serious risk of hypothermia.

I have to dry them soon as possible.

As soon as I can take this off and dry me

need down.

But what will the best way to go down?

The slopes of the mountain are facing east and west.

I have to choose one of these directions.

I do not want to go east

That would take me to the heat of the Nevada desert.

So, I go west.

As the sun dry it I have an opportunity

to guide me here.

A sunny day like this

a good way of seeing where is north, south, east and west

is to use the method shadow with a stick.

I need here is only one ...

This should serve.

What I have to do is put it on the floor

which will create a shadow

and then just mark where does the shadow.

So we for about 15 minutes

and while the clothes dry I let the shadow moves

I check the other brand

and this will give me a line east / west.

It is a very simple to work from.

I only have six hours of sunlight.

And at this altitude, night can be fatal.

It's time to go.

But first I need collect some water.

The water here looks clean but does not mean it is pure.

Is stagnant water, ideal for developing bacteria.

I remember one of my friends in the army

drinking once a lake just like this

and ended up with severe diarrhea and vomiting

for almost a week. I do not want to risk it.

I fill the flask but I will not drink it

until you have the opportunity to boil it later.

At this point, my makeshift sundial

may have given me the direction to follow.

I can see that the shadow has moved.

This was the original brand. I'll put here one stone.

She stood there in twenty minutes. So this is a line

reliable but rudimentary line east / west.

To the west there is and the Nevada desert to the east.

I do not want to go there so go to the west.

First, I want to see which part of this mountain

is easier to descend.

The warm rays of the sun become unstable snow.

If they have to go through a slope like this

is important to see where to put your feet.

It's just that slippery I have to continue to fall

as soon as possible.

I think I progressing.

Until I before this huge cliff.

Is a fall of one hundred meters there down.

Giving back can take hours.

It is time that I have not.

The safest thing to do would try to find

another way.

But now I am also worried

these clouds are formed.

These are storm clouds.

We are much more vulnerable and exposed to storms

and lightning when we are up here

And now I need down quickly.

I am in climber.

Therefore, I'll try to do this

without string or equipment that can help me.

And that's how it's done.

The secret to descend such rocks

is to always friction with the rock

through the feet and if they can, through the hands.

The goal is not to slip.

The goal is to go dragging carefully

there down.

When it becomes steeper, we have to turn your stomach

See how it falls apart. The edges of the rocks.

And one of the great dangers is when the top

start getting sand making it so slippery.

And the other thing is water.

Water in granite causes it to become treacherous.

If it rains, I have to leave.

Few years ago a teenager in Michigan

slipped on wet rock, like this near here

Fell and broke his ankle.

Yourself unable to move, spent eleven days in agony

before being rescued by helicopter.

Many climbers not so lucky

and people die these mountains, every year.

One danger to drop by these rocks

is the presence of all these horizons misleading

and it is so difficult see what is safe or not.

We ended up getting a position

we can not up or down.

There is a considerable amount of risk doing this type of climbing

and is very easy to hurt or twisting an ankle

especially slide by these flat rocks.

But I managed to fall and reach the tree line.

I know I have to find water, food and shelter

before dark.

The only question is how.

I am in the mountains of Sierra Nevada California.

645 km of what is one of the most rugged land

of North America.

Every year, hundreds of tourists lost or injured here.

Some of them die.

I'm trying to get away with little more than the clothes they bring dress.

Probably already descended about 600 meters.

And one of the fastest ways to descend a mountain

is following a watercourse.

But I have to be careful.

Many of the rivers in the Sierra are famous for its waterfalls

and steep canyons.

The current took me to this larger river

and this is good news for me.

The rivers there are often as the solution to get out of trouble.

They always end up leading us up to a village or a road otherwise.

I try to use this to go along downstream.

This area was once home to many Native Americans.

I will use some of their survival techniques

to transform the trunk a raft.

Soon night will

and this will be the fastest way for down-river.

When the water will be heavier

but at least for a while this will keep me on the surface.

But the main, to build a raft, my experience

is trying to do a simple thing.

Whenever we try to do something very complicated

generally eventually crumble.

But this one will be safe and simple.

I have five or six of these. Large and solid

and some to support.

And the idea is to tie it tight

but first needed something to tie them.

These vines huge wild grow for all these banks

and this will be ideal

since it is extremely strong and very flexible.

And all these climbers edible.

Even the leaves.

It is a good source of nutrients.

And the way to do this

is so well tucked these branches, and flexible

fold them, come by,

and bend them a few times.

This is an old technique Indians

basically is as interlacing

and what we do is to get the vine

we turned it once, twist

and got a tip to wrap around the trunk

then we again the same thing.

And good to do this

is that there is as gets wet

all these we twisted will tighten even

making it even stronger and more flexible

but also sufficiently tight to keep the logs together.

Ok It's time for the first official test on the ground.

They are more or less grouped.

And now what am I gonna do is to do the same here

put the latter support,

and, in principle, I'm ready to go.

These waters are used for canoeing

but can be fatal.

A single river, these mountains

lost 234 lives, the last thirty years.

The river is following a good speed.

'm Traveling a much greater distance

what was going ashore.

For safety should be down the river

having a quick ashore.

However, it is easier to say what to do.

My biggest problem is that I can not drive the raft.

All I can do is hit the legs to avoid the larger stones

and without a rudder, the only thing I can do

is myself.

These shares less deep are always the worst

since I'm hitting the rocks

and my knees are already hurting.

I just need to go deeper waters.

I have been in these waters almost two miles.

In just half an hour traveled about 3 miles.

But now I'm starting to suffer.

It is becoming ... much cooler in these canyons

now that the sun has set.

In the first twenty minutes was fun and more or less hot

but now getting less fun and more cold.

If you take the correntesa, the chances of leaving are few.

And it's starting to get stronger.

The river is slowly gaining speed

and each curve, begin to see the correntesa

and I hope that hang it here.

These correntesas seem endless.

And so I step one, comes immediately after another

and yet another. And they are becoming worse.

And here come some more. I'll try to go here.

I do not know how much longer I get myself.

'm Trying hold on the raft.

I was thrown out of the raft

and the water is so strong that I can not climb again.

The water is absolutely freezing and I'm out of here as soon as possible.

I was thrown from my improvised raft

as I try to find the fastest way

to leave the mountains the Sierra Nevada.

And the water in these correntesas is frozen.

Well, it seems I lost my raft

was pushed to last correntesa.

Confirmations but not bad.

It's almost night.

And I think that scared me there a bit

... that last part.

And now I'm quite tired

and very cold.

Can I use this boss here

to make a shelter.

And now I really need make a fire

and warm up quickly.

Come on. Here.

When shaving my flint against a stone

I can finally make a fire.

In ten minutes, light disappeared

and only feels the cold everywhere

once the sun goes down

and this fire

is my salvation.

This boss here is all I have now

as under to spend the night

... well not very pleasant.

But with the fire at least I can dry myself.

reheat a little.

Might perhaps sleep for a few hours.

and some vine leaves I have nothing to eat.

Tomorrow, I want to see if I find food.

Are five in the morning and it dawned on Sierra.

645 miles sweeping mountain

that travel to California.

I'm going to the west mountains.

If it were to the east, would stop in the Nevada desert.

But first, breakfast.

And as a good English, like a good hot tea.

I made this one with some pine needles.

In altitude, the body needs many more liquid

than at sea level

need to drink much as possible.

If they are lost, and where they have something to drink,

can use the needles pine for water.

Typically can be dew on the leaves.

The sun rose less than an hour

but this is already completely dry.

I'll take some of these and take some of the water

these needles.

Pine needles are an excellent source of moisture

retaining a large amount of water.

They also have high levels vitamin C.

Surprisingly 8 times more than orange juice.

What I need now, is something to eat.

I accept what you have.

You may find here some larvae

or some beetles.

But look. It's all so rough and dry.

There are no signs of ...

There are no signs of anything here.

Without food, I have to leave this mountain as you can.

But I need to make sure be in the right direction.

Have to go down

toward the west. That's where I go.

It is so important keep the same direction.

Moreover, recently a Scout came here

and lost its way and ended lost to stay here for 2 days.

The Scout, only 15 years old

was found near here.

Walked for 16 km glacier with a temperature

before the rescue team find it.

I know that the sun born on that side

this morning in the east. I saw he was born.

I need to go west. But first I need to go down

where there is more chance to get food and water.

But my options will be limited.

I am sure that the food to find

not be on the menu any restaurant.

I'm in the mountains the Sierra Nevada in California

looking for a way out of here.

And I'm lucky.

A means of transport once used by natives

come to me.

There are some horses grazing.

And this is even a privilege to see.

This is one of the few places E.U. us where we can see

wild horses.

Are probably horses that escaped from a ranch.

I do not know to what extent I can bring me one.

Maybe some who separate group.

Or to what extent I can mount it

and go with him through these mountains This would be excellent.

It's unlikely but I'll try.

Native Americans were ties

with willow branches.

There are a lot here so I'll start making one.

Once you reach the end of this another beginning

and then shove here and then join them

and then do another.

Here it is.

When you reach the end all I have to do

is to grab the tip, wrap around and tighten it.

Now the big test.

The technique of the Indians to calm horses

requires sensitivity and patience.

Here it is.

Look. Is now to look the same to me.

You're reviewing me.

The way to approach

is very slowly, calmly, kindly

And if I catch some of this herb Fresh grass.

this will be a thing familiar to him.

And what I want, is that it begins to turn

approaches and feel my smell.

It is certainly curious.

And that will be the key to approach him.

Come on.

That's right.

That's right. That's right.

Good boy.

Good boy.

And this is the important part. The first contact.

Making love in the shoulder.

This is a very little threatening to a horse.

The part of the head is very sensitive.

And this was a good first contact.

I caress it ... and his muscles responded.

He has not felt my hand on his body.

Look ... The tail wagging.

He is still a little suspicious of me.

Here we go.

That's it. Calmly.

Ok This is a big step for this horse.

Good boy. Here we go.

Here we go.

I lost my opportunity.

Should have spent at least a day to get his confidence

before trying to mount it.

Now that he is suspicious of me

even take longer.

Not want to wait. So I will have to depend

of my own feet to leave.

Something that I have to do is finding food.

Let's see if I can find some water snakes.

People generally afraid of snakes.

They think they are bad and aggressive.

being a reptile. But in fact are not.

So are quite timid.

Here we go.

These snakes often secrete a liquid with smell

to protect them from predators.

But this predator here is hungry.

Here it is. Her mouth.

And so get your head out I can eat the body.

His head is still ... alive

Good food ....

After lunch

is time to continue down the mountain.

After 4 hours

feel that had no progress.

Here is very beautiful But appearances are deceiving.

If you do not know what they are doing

This is the place can kill you.

My priority is to get food

and will not be easy.

I jumped with a parachute in the mountains the Sierra Nevada in California

to put myself in position a lost hiker or mountaineer.

But to survive is essential find a good shelter

and food to sustain.

Can I cut this stem dry and use it as part of the support.

Here is one.

Must be about eight feet. That should do.

I think one is shorter the other

but should serve.

This is a good place to build this cabin.

The plan here has a small slope

but even this will prevent I roll down the mountain.

It's always good to check if there is no trace of animals

where you go to sleep,

and also see if there are red ants.

The last thing is to have a small clearing on top

in case if there Rescuers searching

they can see it.

I arrange them in order to leave a small opening on the side

that will serve as a port. Will be facing south

to catch the sun from the southwest the morning

and also take a little heat.

Now dinner.

And as I'm sick seek beetles

or find a snake here and there

it's time to look for something further up the food chain.

I'm cutting this cedar

to create a stick pitch.

Native Americans choose cedar

because it is one of the woods harder

creating the perfect weapon.

When sand it will do so that the air is fast and lethal.

We are ready for some training.

At this time, rabbits and squirrels

are not at great life-threatening.

I'm ready.

I do not know if they can see

but is there a rabbit.

He has not seen me.

And if I can only get closer a little

I have a chance to throw him the stick.

Now, I will cook my dinner.

But first, I show how to make fire

only a few bits wood.

If you look at the branches this shrub

are very long and thin. And this will help me.

with an otherwise to fire

I can use later.

'm Shaving some

wood on the inside the bark of cedar

I will join the Hill flammable.

And this is the essential part to fire.

I want to see if I get a lot very light and fluffy

and this is what will create combustion

then that will feed flame.

But now This is the crucial part

Attempt is made here a spark

and all that I use is this small branch

I took the bush and this bit of wood

and now this will require a certain amount of patience.

It will take many attempts.

Where that leaves the axis you have to start all over again.

My arms are already on fire.

Burn your ...

To create a combustion friction has to heat the wood

up to 430 degrees.

And so it begins to appear smoke

if I keep more some

and then I will have ... can see the flame here?

Here we go. Tobacco.

We put here on this mound.

're Done. We put it here.

Now prepare the rabbit to be cooked.

All we have to do now is ...

since the neck is already broken,

this will be out soon all at once.

This will be my first decent meal in days.

But I am concerned that unwanted guests

may appear for the barbecue.

This is starting to cook and is already smell really good.

But I will not be the only able to smell it.

The black bears here in the area can smell it

up to 40 km away.

In fact, a friend of mine once camped here

went to sleep and he had an apple one of his trouser pockets,

these pants he used as a cushion.

he awoke in the night with a black bear tearing

pants under your head to make it onto the apple.

But eventually get lucky. But this shows the care

we always have that prepare and cook food

and, above all, get rid of all the food that we will not use

before going to sleep.

This seems like it is ready.

I'm sitting here salivating for this rabbit

Time to prove

It has a taste for meat same fresh

and having been cooked this fire

know so well. As a barbecue.

With the prospect of a full stomach

the first time in days, I look around

and appreciate the grandeur this amazing place

and begin planning the next phase to leave.

This night simply beautiful.

Can you see the stars so clearly.

Can you see Polaris there.

Not the brightest star but it is one of the few that is constant.

We can guide through it, because it moves.

Moreover, since I see I'll mark it

so that when you wake up morning

can see the direction I have to follow.

here is the east, here is the South and I'm going to ...

... West.

And this trip will take me to one of the most dangerous

these mountains.

I came to an area of mountains designated "chaparral".

It is a Spanish name for areas vegetation hot and arid

where few animals survive.

And it's a bad place to stop the water.

This is the most extreme the western Sierra Nevada.

The area also hosts poisonous scorpions

and ants that bite.

Although ants they can make a tasty appetizer.

This is why We always hold that over his head.

If I put in my tongue ...

... she will bite.

It therefore one eats the other side.

The hard part is to pick them.

We can see there the abdomen and we can eat that part.

In fact, it's something sweet

but so is not bad.

It's time to go

After a snack appetizing ant

I continue.

I walk as much before it gets too hot.

But this ground hot has a new threat.

Cobras.

This is also an ideal breeding ground for snakes.

Rattlesnakes, bull snakes king. But it is with the snakes

we must be very careful.

Incidentally, this site is ideal for snakes.

Especially the strength of the heat

that is very hot and they seek shade

threading here. And that is why it is so important

whenever we find trunks, always look right across

and keep moving.

It seems I have very ahead.

The day is getting hotter and I need water.

Five years ago, a climber alone

lost in these parts.

For nine days, the search team looked for him in vain.

When finally find

he was profoundly dehydrated.

But there's a plan that could have helped.

This type of bush is ideal.

I will not feed me much of it

but this is a shrub of "manzanitas"

which literally means "little apples".

The natives used use them a lot like nuts

and everything we do is chew them

and throw away the stone.

But this here has a lot of vitamin C and are excellent.

And also make it into juice. They take a lot of them,

crush them, add water and put the juice in a basket

up with a great refreshing drink.

But I'll take some of these with me.

The shrub also takes advantage something else.

At this point, I really need to clean my teeth.

The manzanita bush was used by native

as a toothbrush.

And that's what I'll do too.

This shrub can be extremely useful.

Not much but ...

... is one of the few in this area who can help me

The mid-afternoon, the sun's heat is almost unbearable.

You are slowing me down this merciless terrain.

Until my luck changes.

Look. Look. Fast.

This is amazing.

It is a huge lake.

And I really need water.

My canteen is empty some time

and this is simply what I was looking for

Now I can simply drink and freshen up.

This is so good.

That's not all.

At the other end of the lake I see a road.

If I get through this lake in any way

that road will be my passport out of here.

The lake has an extension a kilometer

and if they swim this distance

I will show you how to use the pants to keep you on the surface.

All you have to do is to grab at the legs

and make a knot. I used to do this

lots of times when I was a kid to cross rivers.

What we do is to tie these knots to hold the air

and then, when the water will act as a lifejacket.

But it is further than I was expecting

and the water is getting increasingly cold.

Soon after, I encounter another problem.

My vest improvised not so reliable.

There is only one thing to do.

Try filling it with air as I try to deal with water.

But is not that easy.

Finally get through.

This was a trip just extraordinary to me.

Just for all the different environments that I had to face.

Since being at an altitude high, with snow

to be under a scorching heat.

The amount of times I had to get used

and all techniques I had to use to survive.

And the techniques of Native proved so useful to me

which shows how self-sufficient they had to be

to survive in this type landscape.

But for me ...

... is more than time to go home.

It was difficult.

But I leave this place with great respect

by Native Americans

and its extraordinary survivability.
