My name is Bear Grylls.
served in the British Special Forces,
climbed Everest,
and crossed the icy seas of the Arctic ..
Now, my challenge is to throw me in the rain forest of Costa Rica.
Hundreds of thousands of tourists come here every year
to feel the adrenalin walking through the jungle.
What they do not know is how fast can be a risk.
I'll show what is needed to survive here.
We are in the rainy season in Costa Rica.
I come from the Pacific coast to the rainforest.
This region, the Osa Peninsula may seem magnificent
but it is easy for tourists get lost here in 777 km2.
of impenetrable jungle.
Every year, one million people visit to Costa Rica
to explore how these jungles.
Last year, the Red Cross had to save 94 of these tourists.
For many of the creatures living in the rainforest
lost tourists are simply food.
'll Show how to survive in the jungle
and how to avoid making the the food chain deadly.
I will do so with little more than the clothes I'm wearing.
All I is a knife and a canteen with water.
This is much less of bringing the common traveler.
And I'll skip it into the jungle.
The film crew follow my steps.
And my mission is simple: Shows how to survive in the jungle
and go from there.
The trees below me has more than one million trees
and very little space to land.
Landing in the topmost branches was a technique developed
Special Forces to search the jungle.
And it is dangerous.
But I'll show as special forces
entered into the jungle when the parachute was arrested.
I'm down in this tree 20 meters from the ground.
All I have to do is down by rope.
The bad news is that the rope is only 15 meters.
This will be one of my entries less conventional in the jungle.
The rope of the parachute I would be very helpful here.
But deep down most of those who are lost here
are lost with nothing.
Therefore, will be the same for me.
Will make the trip much more difficult.
To a trained eye little the jungle looks all the same
and therefore is very easy to get lost.
In spring the Minister of the Environment
stayed here for two days lost before being saved.
After entering so quickly in this jungle
and suddenly see all so quiet
is very strange.
And here looks really cool.
The only way out of here is to find a stream or a river
and seguii it.
The best way to do is going down
but it is not easy.
The forest floor is slippery full of leaves and mud.
We must tread carefully not to twist the ankle
and never grab the branches there may be a snake.
Where am I?
Temperature should already be in the 30 ? C
and there is much moisture.
Only walked a few meters but I'm drenched in sweat.
Why not see much of the sky is easy to feel claustrophobic.
All around me is wildlife
and so far, is innocent.
This forest zone has, in fact, the highest concentration of jaguars.
But I feel that the real danger ser?o? the little things.
The scorpions, mosquitoes and snakes.
Only by walking here need to be careful
and watch where I put my feet.
If you step on a log or to pick up a vine without looking
and can be bitten.
Can you see?
It is a fer-de-lance.
And this is why we have so carefully
walking through the jungle.
Yes Has the gold standard
and these snakes are responsible for more deaths in Central America and South
than any other snake.
They are incredibly deadly.
And fer-de-lance means literally, head of the spear.
When attacking inject a large amount of venom
and if it attacked me and bit could not pass tonight.
I need to guide me soon as possible.
I climb the tree higher than found
to have a preview terrain.
Despite having experience in climbing, the jungle is difficult.
This will be more difficult than I thought.
But if I can get up there and find a way
can offset the risk.
This does not seem with anything that has already climbed.
It's not like the slope a rock.
These branches and creepers may break at any time.
Hence, I must be very careful.
Well,
I am already quite high this tree.
And I can see this because of those monkeys
that are now under me.
Hence, I think I'm getting somewhere.
I must be now on the 3rd floor but I have yet to reach 5.
Needed now was a lift.
The trees around me are extremely thin.
And as I are trying at all costs
reach the light of day, up there.
I am now 30 meters from the ground struggling with his own plantation
to reach the top what is known as "the den".
This is amazing.
It is the first time that I see the trees of the forest above
and is very pretty.
But it is quite ... quite intimidating
because only see miles and miles jungle in all directions.
But look there.
I can see a kind depression in the jungle
e. .. it seems that one side there is certainly higher than the other
and this often means that there is a river.
I know where to go but ahead
I'll face with a range of new dangers.
I'm in the rainforest the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica.
I know that this area bathed by the Pacific.
If you find a river I follow him to the sea.
And that's my best chance to find civilization.
The vegetation is getting increasingly dense
and am having difficulty forward.
This here is so ... is so dense.
And this is ... is now a part of the forest.
Losing sense of direction here can be fatal.
One in every five deaths here is because the tourists are confused
until lost.
It's so hard to walk but it is worth following here
because, first, will take me down there
and second, because it is a sign that long ago,
was human here here and there may be a way.
Ten years ago, an American middle-aged came here to walk alone.
She got lost, fell and got hurt.
Unable to move here was abandoned.
Despite rescuers strengthened were two weeks
until they found your body in a state of decomposition.
If he had a knife, could circumvent this in a few hours.
But I only have a knife can come and stay here for days.
I have been all cut. I blistered
and it seems not left the same place.
I need another plan.
I am lucky.
Now I found a stream I follow him.
It will also give me something else I need.
I can live up to three weeks without food
but I can not live more than a few days without water.
You must be very careful when you drink these irrigation
but there are some clues to see if it is good to drink.
And the first thing is obviously the fact of having a strong current
and the fact that they are clean.
But the second runway is to see these fish swim
and also these flies are good indicators
that water is safe to drink.
I can not be absolutely whether this water is good or not
but tastes incredible.
Drinking water is one thing positive this stream.
I know that this peninsula is surrounded by the sea
and follow it here I find a river
and, God willing, the sea.
If you follow this course, I get out of this jungle.
It may not be the quickest and safe but it is a way.
At present, is the only one I have.
Later on, I can hear the sound of a river
to become something more.
This can mean trouble.
The waterfall ends in a steep training.
It may take several hours to circumvent and then, it will be night.
And I need down before.
'm Surprised with the strength of the vines in the jungle.
Now, I'll test them.
This is a climbing site.
I pull it, braiding it and use it to go down the waterfall.
These vines are extremely strong
and can easily support my weight.
I tied the vines to a tree and I'm pretty sure that I will stand
since I can I hold them.
This waterfall may seem very beautiful
but, believe me, is quite powerful.
It is as if to fire a bag of cement on his chest.
It is very difficult to keep your feet these slippery rocks
and the vines are wet is much more difficult to hold me.
Should start thinking building a shelter
but my knife is getting less sharp.
I used a lot.
And to make a shelter, it must be very sharp.
One way to do this is to use some of these stones of these rivers
That's right. This stone is a kind of natural Grinder
and put it here and get a larger stone ...
must first break it until they part with a chipped
Get rid of larger pieces and then begin to leave in pieces,
and when well crushed caught this wood I took the shell
and then step here.
And this will end up getting hooked because it is wet
and then you get the knife and start over.
And it is starting Ficano ... better.
Perfect.
Look. Look at this here.
A small frog poison.
You can see that is poisonous only by the bright colors on the body
and what happens is that toxins are secreted through the skin
and certainly would not want to eat them.
Get it? Go on then.
This frog is known as the poison dart frog
and Colombia use the poison to make poisonous arrows.
I left the river to see if I can find food.
In the jungle, not worth expend energy chasing or setting up traps.
Here, there are many plants to eat.
Fallen fruit from trees like japan these are a gift from God.
They taste of lychee and are rich in sugar.
Here, plants are the best source of food.
Few years ago one boy survived for 13 days
only with bananas and water from the river, before finally leave.
Many survivors say that when we are lost
the worst time is at night.
It's getting dark, I have not done a shelter
and I am very concerned not knowing what awaits me.
I'm in the middle of the jungle in Costa Rica and need to find a way out of here.
The time now 16h and is already beginning to darken
and now I need build a shelter quickly.
We only a few degrees north of the Equator
which means that the days and nights are of equal length.
And when night falls here, gets dark very fast.
Additionally, are in the rainy season
and when it rains, it rains. And if I do not have some kind of shelter
and a fire around dusk I will be the dinner of all mosquitoes of this jungle.
This place is not good.
Fallen trees and branches is the number one killer in the jungle
therefore have to find an empty seat.
This area should be used. It is dry, there is no stream near
you can flood it and, above all, no ants.
And the ants are those that really dominate the jungle.
And I can say that when there is a colony of ants
they destroy everything. So the first thing to do
before building under is to clean the floor.
But should not use their hands since there can be snakes or scorpions.
Use a stick to clear the area where they sleep and if they can
'calling some of the land, and is on top of it going to sleep.
My bed will be simple because I'll just stay here one night.
Most snakes and scorpions will not want to cross the floor uncovered.
Therefore, the clean sheets should be enough to not appear.
Ok The ground is already very clean
and now I can use these two trees as support.
I just need to get SOME branches first.
This should serve.
Without a knife would be impossible to do this.
Who walks through the jungle always carry a knife.
But with this small blade can do more than simply survive.
Even a knife would be better than nothing
and using a piece of wood hammer throw
can easily down the trees more vulnerable.
It will be a structure to sleep simple.
Need not have two sides because almost no wind in the jungle.
And the rain will only come in one direction.
I'm anxious to finish this.
Still unclear but only 2% of that light is arriving here.
And as the sun goes I can not see anything.
I'm using these sheets to the top of the shelter.
I'm tearing each side so you can put in the branches
and create a natural equivalent a roof.
And in principle, be waterproof.
The air is full of mosquitoes.
Chatham and can carry dengue or malaria.
The longer you are here greater the risk.
This termite nest will help me.
Is one of the best repellent for mosquitoes throughout the forest.
And this may seem mud but in reality is digested wood
and, for all purposes are termite feces.
This is the only reason I will take the time to make a fire.
I do not need heat but I need to get rid of mosquitoes.
While I am here may seem small
but these things have a lot of protein.
In fact, compared the termites have more protein
than meat or fish.
And even if they seem nasty do not taste so bad.
But when they are so small take time to pick them
to have a decent meal.
And now, need to make a fire.
And of all times 've ever been in the jungle
never been without tools to fire.
But what I can do is to try the method of the arc.
I have a bit of rope from my canteen to this arc
I have here a branch and right tight timber
and all I have to do is Bending it, take a walk
to be tight.
Putting it in the hole I did down there,
holding a little wooden not to move your hand
and then begin to rub slowly.
And then it is expected that Rubbing,
can create a flame, and this is called
I will use to burn this dry grass.
It's starting ... starting to smoke
and now just need to continue.
Let.
It is very difficult to keep the wood straight and move the bow at the same time.
And although it is not difficult to smoke, doing enough to create a flame
now is something completely different.
Okay Okay. Now smoke is coming out.
And if it enough to light this herb, I can.
Let.
And it's such a relief for fire. It took an hour to achieve.
When you are stronger, I put this nest of termite
to get rid of mosquitoes.
I say I feel much better.
The smell of the nest of termite will keep the mosquitoes away,
I have water and food, fire and a shelter
and found a river that can help me get out of the jungle.
All I need now is a good night's sleep.
Is a 3 and I just got up
the worst night of my life. I woke up three times in the last ten minutes
and now I with stomach pains
and I have great difficulty just to keep up.
And running out of energy in the middle of the night,
in the jungle, with snakes and everything else.
And moreover, I'm really getting sick.
Wait.
Are 5 am and I could not feel worse.
I spent half the night vomiting and almost no sleep at all.
I am so exhausted
and to tell the truth, I do not know what I did wrong.
Almost did not eat.
I had so carefully with the water I drank.
But just hope it's not dysentery.
But is the first time I feel cold and shivering
which is not good when it is such a hot spot.
Dysentery is a severe form diarrhea.
I think that is not what I have. Probably only got a bacteria.
Probably, the bacteria play and feces of animals by mistake.
I am almost certain that the water was clean yesterday
but this is only one reason for me to be even more careful
Since water can carry all types of viruses and microbes.
That is why we must always take tablets with you
water purification always coming out on walks.
But sometimes simply do not have luck.
I boil the water for at least 5 minutes
to make sure that is really good to drink.
Diarrhea takes liquids and salts, minerals body increasing the risk of heat exhaustion.
And that would be a deadly combination.
No need to be lost for days to stay with exhaustion
and every year, people die not drinking enough.
Now I need to get going and get anything to fill the stomach.
But if in the jungle can ill also can help us
if we know what to look for.
I know there is a tree called "tree of milk"
whose sap is very good for stomach problems.
They have a characteristic shoots sap and creamy white in abundance.
I saw one a 1 kilometer under my
and now just need to go back and find it.
The quickest way to return is over.
Do not feel up to much but do not want to waste half an hour
walking through the jungle.
Fortunately this rock has a good grip.
But again the force of water is against me.
Now you find that tree.
Almost half of the medicines we use
are made from plants of the rainforest.
The analgesic Iboprufeno was created from this vine
called "monkey ladder".
But of course it should know exactly what to look for.
And here it is.
No. This seems to be a small tree of milk.
This is like magnesium in a natural way.
And this will do me good to stomach and also give energy.
How to identify it is through these simple leaves
with these shoots sharp. And so it breaks
you can tell this creamy sap
leaving it.
Right next to this little tree, is a tree-grown
in shell feature that looks with the camouflage used in the army.
Normally, should be avoided ingest plant sap with a creamy
because often means that are poisonous.
But I know that this is not.
This sap is a form of latex and soothes the stomach.
It's amazing. It even has a creamy texture.
I need to recover quickly
since such a situation you never know what awaits us.
I'm not 100% but I need to get going
and follow the river current.
I have no idea of the distance traveled but I feel I'm making progress.
But this is extremely tiring.
And I'm taking some time to go a considerable distance.
My energy is gone with stomach problems
And two days ago that I eat properly.
I am also aware that in the jungle, night falls very fast
and I need shelter and food.
I know that today I no longer go much further
therefore, I start to prepare myself for another night in the forest.
Already lit the fire and already have a shelter
But now that I wanted to was to catch some fish.
This is a good time to do this since the fish I'm looking for
are much more docile at night.
All I did was get some wood
Roll a small amount of tissue around and spread a little resin
to avoid off. And this should burn 10-15 minutes.
I download the torch until the water level to see if I see shrimp or crabs.
I used some climbing to tie my knife to a branch
in case, if you see something, spectacle it in time
achieve catch it.
It is the first living thing I can take this jungle.
And this is excellent.
These shrimp catch is easily without a knife
but if I could take fish real
instead, give a decent meal.
Look at these here.
Come on.
No way.
No way.
I was in my hand. He was dead.
Have you had stuck the knife.
And now this torch is also erasing
Well, I have four shrimp which is not bad for a dinner.
But it would have been a feast. Will now be a mini-banquet.
But then I cook them here before it goes off.
Whatever use you to keep the morale up
will help to survive.
Sometimes it is more than a meal by the fire.
Well, it has rained so there are already four hours
with thunder and lightning everywhere
and now it's all ... completely soaked.
This is very but very demoralizing.
In the early hours, the shelter has withstood
but since then, it's just water everywhere
Another sleepless night me even more determined
out of this jungle as soon as possible.
In the last two kilometers, the landscape has changed dramatically.
The land became flatter and the widest river.
I am now walking along the banks which are filled with water.
I'm on the edge and now I can see that the river is widening
and it will be my passport out of this jungle.
And if I find a way to follow the course of water
eventually go to a village or a village or even the sea.
And there is the possibility that tonight
now go bed very cozy.
But before that, need to follow the River.
And the quickest is making a raft.
So that's what I'll do.
Will build a raft has to be as simple as possible.
What will keep it afloat is this tree
It is used to infrastructure since it is so light and easy to cut.
It's so easy, I can cut a tree, only with my knife and a stone.
This is a real gift to me
and even if it seems too heavy is, in fact, so light
and makes us feel like ... if we were Superman.
And this is the first time I feel strong, in days.
I'm reeling off the bark to use it and tie the raft.
It is very strong and surprisingly flexible.
When I have finally, I'm sweating all over the place.
I hope this is tight enough to hold
want this river has in store for me.
I'm in the rainforest.
And now that I have a raft I conclude that float
is certainly faster than walking.
After a few days under the trees
is a real relief see some light.
As the miles roll on
beginning to be aware the size of this place.
I must be getting sea because this is not the forest.
This is the swamp. Salt-tolerant plants
that grow near the coast in tropical climates.
It is a sign that I'm leaving the jungle and getting closer to the beaches of the coast.
Not only are the trees that are changing.
The river is also.
The chain is accelerating pulling me whirlpools.
Can I change the direction of the raft but I can not fight the current.
If not careful, can be taken to the middle of the Pacific
and therefore, I will see if I can find a way through the mangroves.
It's getting difficult.
This is becoming a real nightmare.
It is so sharp and is getting to hurt my hands.
Besides not knowing what is alive and what is dead.
I was three hours climbing this swamp
and now I feel that this will not go anywhere.
There is something sinister in the way as the brambles out of the water
and you never know what lives these lakes marshes.
But as a way to get out of here forget.
I have to go back to the raft and venture to the River.
This was what I feared.
I came to the mouth of the river where the current is accelerating
If we add to the force of water into the sea
means that I can not row to the banks.
The river current is powerful but it is not always so along the coast.
If they are caught in a current so not resist, let yourself go
because, sooner or later, will take you to the coast.
Although I have no idea where is this beautiful beach
but I do not want to know.
Because a few meters, I see signs of electricity.
And power means people.
And that means that I'm safe.
This was an incredible journey for me.
And in many ways one of the most difficult
only by how much the forest can be intimidating when one is lost
and also the speed with which take away our energy.
But it is an extraordinary world.
But also a world that is getting smaller.
The rain forest lost every second an area equivalent to a football stadium.
And one day it may be that there a rain forest to get lost.
But honestly I hope that day never comes
it is even a place very special.
But for me, is certainly time to go home.
